Otsego County Department of Health & the CDC recommends that everyone who is not fully vaccinated to contact their Health Care Provder & complete the polio vaccination series as soon as possible, especially children. In Otsego County, only 80.4% of 2 year olds are recorded as having the recommended doses of polio vaccine, locally, Delaware County has a vaccination rate of 89.4%, and Schoharie County 88.8%. So far, 8 polio cases are being investigated in Rockland, Sullivan and Orange Counties.

The 7th Annual Binghamton Porchfest returns this Sunday, from 12:00 noon to 7:00 PM. Porchfest invites thousands of community members each summer for a free afternoon of live music performed from the residential porches, stoops, this year 165 local and regional bands and 59 host locations will participate. The State Office of Cannabis Management announced that the State has begun accepting applications for the first adult-use cannabis retail dispensary licenses. The 1st legal retail dispensaries will be operated by those most impacted by the enforcement of the prohibition of cannabis, and those first sales will be made with products grown by New York farmers. New York’s recreational cannabis market is expected to reach $4.2 billion by 2027 and to create up to 60,000 jobs.

The Broome County Health Department reports a continuing increase in Overdoses in 2022, with 54 fatal overdoses & 333 Non fatal overdoses from January to this week. Broome County had as many as 76 fatal overdoses in 2016, the number was down to 32 in 2018, but the number of cases has increased every year since, with 54 last year. The New York State Fair official opening day attendance Wednesday was 49,112, about 11,700 more people than last year’s extended fair’s Day 1. The Opening Day attendance was still far less than the record-setting 74,000 attendees on opening day in 2019, the year before the pandemic. On average, the fair attracts over 57,000 people on opening days.

The Latest COVID 19 statistics show a slow steady decline, with 7% Positivity rate reported on Tuesday, the 7 day rolling average was down to 6.29%. Patients hospitalizations have declined to 2,394, that a decrease of about 175 since last week, also there were 252 ICU patients with 102 on Ventilators, which is an increase of 13 since last week, & with the overall decline in COVID 19 cases, Students in New York state will not have to wear masks or be quarantined if they came in contact with someone with COVID.

State Officials announced that the 9/11 Tribute Museum in New York City closed down last week. The number of visitors drastically declined with the pandemic & never recovered. Annual admissions dropped to only 26,000 last year, compared to 150,000 in 2019.

The Chenango County Board of Supervisors and the Civil Service Employees Association reached an agreement on a contract for County Employees through the end of 2024. The contract allows for wage increases up to $2.00 an hour, the contract extension kicks in on October 1.

Visitors will be allowed at the Broome County Correctional Facility starting September 5th, visitation had been suspended in March 2020 at the beginning of the COVID 19 pandemic, a Lawsuit was filed to allow visitors back into the Jail and a decision in the State Supreme Court allowed for the Jail to be re-opened for visitation, as the COVID situation had changed considerable since 2020.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that 29 year old Joel Valdes-Pica of Binghamton pleaded guilty to Attempted Robbery, for assaulting a Family Dollar employee who was making a deposit at the M&T Bank on Exchange Street, taking over $1,000. Valdes-Pica is also a repeat Violent Felony Offender and will serve 5 years in New York State Prison starting in November.

The State DMV is reminding New York Motorists to check to see if they have peeling license plates on their vehicles, as police have increasingly ticketed motorists for having the defective plates. People can replace their peeling plates free of charge at an area DMV office.

The State DOT is advising motorists that the off-ramp at Exit 19 on Interstate 88 westbound in the Town of Worcester, will close for approximately 60 days starting on Monday, August 29. The closure is necessary to facilitate a project to resurface the road and rehabilitate bridges. A variable message sign will alert motorists of the closure and direct them to Exit 20 and a signed detour utilizing State Route 7.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that police agencies have removed 6,007 illegal guns from communities across New York State during the first 7 months of the year, a 20% increase over 2021. State Police seized 1,468 guns from August 2021 to July 2022: a 140% increase when compared to August 2020 to July 2021, The State’s budget contains $227 million to fund programs implemented by law enforcement agencies and community-based organizations.

The Deposit Fire Department and Eastern Broome Emergency Services responded to a house fire in the Town of Sanford, Oquaga Lake Road was closed between Old Route 17 and Hanson Road. No injuries were reported, the structure sustained significant fire damage. Mutual aid was provided by fire fighters from Windsor, West Windsor, Harpursville, Ouaquaga and Afton.

Agriculture in New York state paid close to $1 billion in wages and produced roughly $3.3 billion in gross domestic product in 2021, according to a report by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. The sector has proved to be among the most resilient during the COVID-19 pandemic, losing just 1% of jobs in 2020 compared to the statewide annual employment loss of 8.7%. Both employment and wages in the farming sector grew in 2021 to reach new highs of 23,868 employees and $970.2 million in wages.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that 32 year old Amanda Hoyt of Binghamton, pleaded guilty to the felony offense of Attempted Burglary in the Second Degree. In January, Hoyt illegally entered a St. Charles Street apartment in the Village of Johnson City and struck the resident in the arm with a hammer causing injury. Hoyt is a Second Violent Felony Offender and will be sentenced to 5 years in state prison on November 15th.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a Fight-in-Progress Complaint in the Hamlet of Arkville on July 16th. Rolland Billadeau of Shandaken allegedly pushed and struck the victim, Billadeau was located on August 21st and was served with a criminal summons on the charge of Harassment in the Second Degree. Billadeau is scheduled to appear before the Town of Middletown Court at a later date to answer for the charge. Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted by members of the New York State Police.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert for Perdue’s frozen ready-to-eat chicken breast tenders “gluten free”, They may be contaminated with small pieces of clear plastic and blue dye. The Governor’s Office announced that $20 million is available to support addiction services providers in New York State that have been impacted by the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The federal funding will assist providers with fiscal recovery and enable them to continue offering COVID-safe substance use disorder prevention, treatment, harm reduction, and recovery services. The Sidney Veteran’s Memorial Park Association had a successful fundraising Golf Tournament this year, and more fundraisers may be announced, as upgrades are being performed at the Park in Sidney at River Street near State Route 8. The State Health Department confirmed the 1st case of Monkeypox in a Juvenile. Officials said that the child lives outside of New York City, however, 25% of all monkeypox cases in the U.S. are in New York City. There were 2,596 cases reported statewide as of last Friday.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office reported that a Walton man died Sunday while canoeing on the Susquehanna River in Otego. Emergency Services received a 911 call at 1:59 pm. from a group of family members canoeing on the river, reporting that a member of their party was missing. 43 year old Brian Walley fell into the water, family was unable to locate him, he was found by State Police divers at 6:45 pm. and was declared deceased by the Otsego County Coroner’s office.

From August 15 – August 21 Troopers were out targeting risky and unsafe driving behavior like speeding, distracted driving and violations of the “Move Over Law”. The special campaign titled “Speed Week” resulted in over 25-thousand tickets issued across the state. In Troop C, 1,491 speeding violations were issued and 108 “Move Over” tickets were issued.

State Police & EMS responded to a 1-vehicle crash on County Highway 42 in the town of Maryland. Troopers found that vehicle had crashed into a tree, the driver was a 17-year-old female who was pronounced deceased on scene. A preliminary investigation revealed that the operator was traveling south on County Highway 42 when she exited the roadway and struck a tree. The investigation is ongoing.

Local sales tax collections in New York state increased by 11.9% in July compared to the same month in 2021, according to an analysis by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Local collections totaled $1.8 billion, up $188 million as compared to July of last year. A majority of counties saw some year-over-year growth in July collections, with Schuyler County experiencing the largest increase at 19.6%.

The United States Geological Survey says the small magnitude 1.2 tremor happened just east of Batavia, in Genesee County last Monday Afternoon. Officials said that a quake measuring 1.0 on the Richter Scale has the equivalent energy of a 60 watt light bulb left on for 9 hours straight. No damage was reported during the quake. 551 earthquakes have been recorded in New York state from the years 1737-2016, the largest ever registered was a 5.9 earthquake near Massena in 1944.

State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Computer Crimes Unit arrested 28 year old Davaun Chandler of Earlville for Promoting a Sexual Performance by a Child and Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child. The arrest stems from a cyber tip received by the State Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, Chandler was arraigned and was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $5000 cash, $10,000 bond.

43 year old Jillian Eckberg of Oneonta was sentenced to more than 5 years in prison trafficking methamphetamine, heroin and fentanyl. Eckberg admitted that she brought narcotics from New York City to customers in Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, Eckberg will also be under supervised release for four years following her prison term.

State Police arrested 39 year old Adam Bright of East Meredith for Aggravated Vehicular Homicide, Aggravated Vehicular Assault, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, Driving While Impaired by Drugs & Reckless Driving, after an investigation into a head-on crash on May 26th, on State Highway 23 in Davenport. Bright’s minivan collided with a tractor trailer driven by 53 year old Michael Lutz of Oneonta. Bright was airlifted to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, his passenger, 43 year old Stacey Stachow of Meredith died at the scene, Lutz suffered minor injuries and was treated and released at a local hospital. Bright was located by Troopers Wednesday, he was arraigned at the Hamden Town Court and remanded to the Delaware County Jail.

Delaware County Public Health Services has confirmed its first monkeypox case in Delaware County. The person had traveled outside of Delaware County and contact tracing efforts are underway. Monkeypox spreads through close, physical contact between people. The Delaware County Public Health Services advises those who experience symptoms, such as rashes or lesions, to contact their healthcare provider, this includes anyone who has traveled to countries and areas where monkeypox cases have been reported, for more information, go to health.ny.gov/diseases.

Former Governor Andrew Cuomo won a lawsuit Tuesday in which he challenged New York’s defunct JCOPE agency’s attempt to seize his profits from a $5.1 million book deal his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. JCOPE determined that Cuomo improperly used state staff and resources while writing his 2020 memoir, “American Crisis.” they ordered him to surrender his compensation to the state. State Police were dispatched Tuesday morning at about 5:40 AM, to a report of a tractor trailer rollover on I-88 east at exit 9 in the town of Sidney. An investigation revealed that an Old Dominion Freight Line tractor trailer with a rear tandem trailer overturned. The driver, a 38-year-old male of Albany, was not injured. The right lane was shut down and reopened around 8:00 AM.

State Police were dispatched Friday to Huckleberry Hill Road in the town of Middletown for a report of a missing 79-year-old woman with dementia. Numerous troopers, State Police K9, State Forest Rangers, Fire and EMS responded to the area, plus a State Police drone was utilized in assisting with the search. The 79-year-old woman was located in a heavily wooded area off Huckleberry Hill Road and sustained minor injuries. Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 27 year old Austin DeMuth of Guilford following a vehicle pursuit Monday afternoon with a motorcycle, from the Town of Smithville & into Cortland County & Broome County. DeMuth was taken into custody, following a pursuit on foot in Whitney Point, he was transported to Wilson Hospital with minor injuries, & he was charged with Unlawful fleeing, Obstruction of Governmental Administration, Resisting Arrest and numerous traffic violations. DeMuth also had a warrant out of the Town of Norwich Court, he was arraigned in the City of Norwich Court and was remanded with no bail and is to return to court on a later date.

State Police arrested 3 Binghamton men for attempted murder in connection with a shooting in West Corners in July. Arrested were Keith Harris, Alex Shoga & Tavin Wilson, they were arraigned at Broome County Central Arraignment and Processing. The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries on July 25 in the town of Union.

Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation that makes imitation weapons easily identifiable, allowing law enforcement to identify a device as fake when assessing threats. The law also said that permissible imitation weapons must be easily identifiable & must be colored white, or several bright colors, or be made of transparent or translucent materials.

U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced $5.4 Million dollars in federal funding for 3 Central New York and Southern Tier airports. Greater Binghamton/Link Field will get about 2.2 Million Dollars to reconstruct airfield guidance signs and to reconstruct or replace the airport lighting vault.

The Susquehanna SPCA will host area legislators and representatives from the New York State Animal Protection Federation and animal shelters from throughout the region, during a press conference later this morning in support of the Puppy Mill Pipeline Bill, which has already passed both houses of the New York State Legislature, Susquehanna SPCA Executive Director Stacie Haynes explains:

Haynes said that every year, thousands of puppies from out of state puppy mills are sold to unassuming consumers at astronomical prices. The dogs are bred in factory like facilities, and are physically, mentally, and medically compromised puppies sold at retail outlets, the bill has not yet been signed by Governor Hochul.
