Governor Hochul announced that masks in New York will be “options” in some places that had previously been required. Masks are still required at healthcare facilities, nursing homes, correction facilities and domestic violence shelters. Local municipalities may chose to impllement masks rules in areas where the rate of transmission is higher.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded on September 3rd to Domestic Dispute in the Town of Hamden, between Christopher Yeary and a victim that had an Order of Protection against him. Yeary left the scene & Deputies located him a short time later, he physically obstructed uniformed police officers attempting to take him into custody, he was charged with Criminal Contempt and Obstructing Governmental Administration. Yeary was arraigned in the Town of Hamden and was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $40,000 cash bail or $80,000 bond, pending future court action..

New COVID-19 vaccine boosters are available to New Yorkers which are designed to add Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 variants and bolster previous vaccination protection. The announcement follows the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation to use updated COVID-19 boosters from Pfizer for anyone age 12 or older and from Moderna for those 18 or older. The State Health Department reported that the 7 day rolling average for those tested for COVID was just under 6%, with over 2200 hundred hospitalized, 235 were in an ICU bed, with 88 on ventilators.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday that 21 year old Brandon Carlson of Endwell was sentenced to 2 1/3rd to 7 years in jail and pay $45,000 in restitution, after pleading guilty to vehicular assault & attempted criminal possession of stolen property. On October 11th last year, Carlson stole a truck and led New York State Troopers on a high-speed chase, which ended when Carlson struck a car that caused a serious physical injury to the other driver, Carlson was found under the influence of methamphetamine during the incident.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday that 42 year old Jeremie Hoyt of Davenport, was sentenced to 25 Years in prison for Sexually Exploiting a Child, and Distributing and Possessing Child Pornography. Hoyt pleaded guilty to the charges in US District Court in April, he was also sentenced to a 30 year term of supervised release, Hoyt will also be required to register as a sex offender.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that 45 year old Chad Jackson of Binghamton was sentenced to 7 years in State Prison followed by 5 years of post release supervision in Broome County Court. Jackson was found guilty in May of 2nd degree Burglary for breaking into a motel room in March of 2020, and stealing property.

The latest Sienna Institute polling showed that the majority of New Yorkers approve of the student loan forgiveness plan announced by President Joe Biden. 56% of respondents supported the plan while 33% opposed it, also, 54% of respondents have paid off all their federal loans, while 45% still have a balance.

A Broome County Grand Jury dismissed charges against Richard Durham of Binghamton. Durham was charged with 2nd degree assault, with intent to cause serious injury to a police officer and resisting arrest. The Broome County District Attorney’s office said that the Grand Jury declined to indict him, Durham only faces a charge of disorderly conduct, in connection with an 9incident with a Binghamton Police officer.

The State Health Department reports that as of today, there are a total of 3,485 confirmed monkeypox cases in New York State. 92% of the cases are in New York City, there are 2 confirmed cases in Broome County & 1 in Delaware County. Symptoms of monkeypox can include Rashes, bumps, or blisters, Flu-like symptoms, such as fever, headache, muscle aches, chills, and fatigue. These symptoms may occur before or after the rash appears, or not at all. More information is available at health.ny.gov/diseases.

The Sidney Central School District will seek voter approval on September 13th for an $8 Million dollar project, Sidney Superintendent Eben Bullock told WCDO News about the proposal.

Bullock said that the project would be paid for with State Aid & A Capital Reserve fund, with no effect to District Taxpayers. Voting will be next Tuesday from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM in the Jr/Sr High School cafeteria.

In the month of August, members from Troop “C” removed 42 impaired drivers off the roadways. Six of those impaired drivers also had a child under the age of 15 in the vehicle with them. State Police will be releasing the results of their Labor Day initiative shortly.

The Broome County Office of Emergency Services is reminding drivers to stop for School busses with its flashing lights on admitting or discharging students. Busses are equipped with cameras, which activate when the stop arm extends, the Stop-Arm program began in June of last year & has already recorded 3076 violations.

State Police responded Friday to State Route 17 west to a crash involving several vehicles. In the 1st crash, vehicles were stopped on State Route 17 due to a construction barrel in the road, a vehicle was unable to stop and struck the rear of a vehicle, causing 2 vehicles to spin, 1 of them hit the guide rail, the other vehicle, struck a different vehicle and pushed it into 1 of the original vehicles. 2 drivers were taken to Wilson Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, 2 other drivers were injured, & were treated at the scene.

The Chenango County Weekly Wastewater Surveillance Data Report showed an increase in COVID 19 levels over the past 2 weeks, which changes the county’s detection level to “HIGH”. State Police were dispatched Saturday to assist Cherry Valley Fire with a hiker who had fallen from a waterfall down about 150-feet into a gorge. 1st responders hiked about a mile through a wooded area to locate the 32-year-old woman from Troy, she was pulled to safety and was airlifted to Albany Medical Center, where she was treated & released.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 32 year old Emily Wood of Morris for Aggravated Harassment, following a complaint in the Town of Morris. Wood is accused of sending threatening and unwanted text messages to the victim. The defendant is set to appear in the Town of Morris Court at a later date.

Broome County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a 2-car accident on I-86 in the Town of Windsor. During the investigation, 39 year old Michael Morgan of Queens, failed a field sobriety test & was charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs. Morgan was processed and released on tickets returnable to the Town of Windsor Court.

Firefighters from Bainbridge, Guilford, Mount Upton, Masonville, Coventry, Franklin, Trout Creek, Afton and Sidney all responded to a structure fire at the Auto Plus Store at 4 Front Street Monday Night at about 9:00 PM. Investigators are trying to determine how the fire started, the store was closed when the fire broke out, no injuries among fire fighters were reported.

The fire at the Minnewaska State Park Preserve was contained on Sunday, according to the Governor’s office. The State DEC Forest Rangers are leading the incident response in cooperation with the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, State Police and many other State and local partners. Response actions in the area will continue in the coming days with a smaller force of state and local experts as fire control efforts advance. More than 200 firefighters, bulldozer operators, pilots, and other professional staff and volunteers have been working to contain the fire.

The performances will be held in December.

Senator Chuck Schumer announced 63.7 million for Binghamton University, for their New Energy New York proposal, which includes the establishment of a national center for battery research and technology. The Battery-NY Center is projected to create thousands of jobs in the next 10 years, Binghamton’s proposal was among 21 projects awarded federal funding, and one of just two in New York State.

State Police and local law enforcement will be out in force through Labor Day weekend as part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” DWI campaign. The enforcement period starts today and runs through Monday, Police will be looking for impaired drivers, distracted drivers & they will be watching out for those violating the state’s “Move Over” laws. Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that temporary lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on New York State highways will be suspended until Tuesday, to ease travel throughout the Labor Day holiday weekend.

The Great New York State Fair attendance has improved almost every day over last year’s attendance, with this past Tuesday’s attendance down by about 6,000, but it is still not back up to pre-pandemic levels. The Fair Attendance had been improving every year though 2019, the best attenance ever occured on September 4th 2019 when over 147,000 people went through the turnstiles. This year’s highest attneadnce was last Saturday with just under 90,000 people.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that Dwayne Benjamin of Johnson City was sentenced in Broome County Court to 3 years in State prison plus 5 years post release supervision after pleading guilty to Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon. On April 2nd, Benjamin was driving in Johnson City when police attempted to stop him for a traffic infraction, he abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, a loaded unlicensed pistol was found in the vehicle, Benjamin was probation for a narcotics conviction, & was arrested a few weeks after the attempted stop.

Roy Peterson of Binghamton pleaded guilty in Broome County Court to Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Peterson was found in possession of 2 stolen credit cards last october, which he attempted to hide from Johnson City police, when he was taken into custody on unrelated charges. Peterson will be sentenced to 1 1/2 to 3 years in State prison on November 23rd in Broome County Court.

Broome County Sheriff David Harder has appealed the State Supreme Court’s Decision to force the county correctional facility to resume in-person visitation. A recent State Supreme Court ruling stated that the Broome County Correctional Facility must allow visitors to be able to see their jailed friends and family beginning on September 5th, as COVID did not have the same threat of transmission level as it did in the beginning. Visitation was suspended in March 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic began closing down businesses, schools, government offices and organization worldwide & virtual visitation was permitted at the Broome County Facility.

The Delaware County Department of Public Works will continue work on a catch basin on County Route 14 in the Town of Franklin for the next 2 weeks. The work will take place in the hamlet of Treadwell just east of the intersection of County Route 14 and Case Hill Road. Traffic will be controlled with temporary Stop signs, the traveling public should expect minor delays during the work period.

State Senator Peter Oberacker marked Women’s Equality Day by announcing Delaware County Undersheriff Kim Smith as the 2022 New York State Senate “Woman of Distinction” from the 51st Senate District. Smith started as a part-time corrections officer with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office in 1997. Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 55 year old Kevin Washington of Sherburne on an active Arrest Warrant Tuesday. Washington was arrested in Sherburne after being located by Detectives, he was taken into custody without incident. The Village of Sherburne Court issued the warrant after Washington failed to appear on previous charges, he was arraigned in the Village of Sherburne Court and was released & was ordered to appear in court at a later date.

New York’s new gun laws are enacted today, following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the state’s century-old pistol permitting process. The laws contain strengthened background checks and firearm safety and live-fire training for individuals seeking to obtain concealed carry permits; prohibit concealed carry permit holders from bringing their firearms into sensitive locations, including bars, libraries, schools, government buildings and hospitals, among others; and require renewal or re-certification of permits every three years, More information is available at gunsafety.ny.gov.

State Supreme Court Justice Peter Lynch today suggested a prison sentence of 16 months to 4 years was appropriate for Nauman Hussain, the owner of Prestige Limousine, who operated the limo in the 2018 Schoharie crash that killed 20 people. In September 2021, Hussain pleaded guilty to 20 counts of criminally negligent homicide as part of a plea deal, he was sentenced to 2 years of probation and 1,000 hours of community service. Hussain’s attorney decided to vacate that plea follow the judges suggestion, they will meet September 14th to discuss a date for a trial.

The Centers for Disease Control confirm that Sullivan County is the latest New York county to test positive for Polio, Sullivan County has a 62.33% polio vaccination rate, their residents are urged to get vaccinated. New York State reported the first polio case in the United States since 2014, when an unvaccinated Rockland County man was hospitalized after traveling in Europe in July. The CDC began testing Rockland County residents and water samples, polio has also been found in Orange County and New York City wastewater, and testing is continuing.

The 1st conviction can result in a $250 to $400 fine, 5 points on a license, and up to 30 days in jail, a 2nd conviction within 3 years could result in a $600 to $750 fine, 5 points on a license, and up to 90 days in jail.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that 44 year old Michael Carley of Johnson City and South Carolina pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Carley was stopped for a traffic violation, he was wanted on an unrelated warrant and was taken into custody, he was also found to be in possession of methamphetamines. Carley will be sentenced to 2 years in New York State and 2 years of post-release supervision on November 28th.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the deployment of the New York Army and Air National Guards To support fire suppression efforts at the 150-acre wildfire currently burning in Minnewaska State Park Preserve in Ulster County. 2 Army National Guard Black Hawk helicopters, capable of dropping 600 gallons of water at a time, began aerial operations, the Air National Guard have been deployed, the State DEC Forest Rangers are serving as Incident Commanders, with more than 200 wild-land firefighters and volunteers, local firefighters, the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, State Police Aviation, and State Fire also fighting the fire.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office Deputies arrested 52-year-old Stephen Kiss of Davenport, after Deputies received a complaint from a male party on August 8th, reporting that his landlord had attempted to unlawfully evict him from his current residence in the Town of Davenport. Deputies determined that Kiss unlawfully attempted to evict the renter by means of discontinuing essential services, on 2 occasions Kiss had turned off the electricity and the water to the residence. Kiss was charged with 2 counts of Unlawful Eviction, he was processed and released on an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Davenport Court at a later date.

The State Department of Health advised New Yorkers that nearly half of all overdose deaths in the state involve fentanyl. New York issued a statewide pharmacy standing order for naloxone beginning earlier this month, to counteract the effects of an opioid overdose, Fentanyl is 50-100 times stronger than heroin and is a major factor in the increase in opioid deaths over recent years.

Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 27 year old David Showers of Port Dickinson, for allegedly slashing the tires of a family member’s car & threatening the same family member with the knife. Showers allegedly disposed of the knife prior to being taken into custody, He was charged with Criminal Mischief, Menacing, Concealing Physical Evidence, he was taken to the Broome County correctional facility for processing.

State Police Child Abuse Unit arrested 59 year old John Olson of Warwick for allegedly sexually abusing multiple juvenile victims, at a daycare/foster care home in the town of Warwick in Orange County and town of Andes in Delaware County. On May 21st, OLSON was arrested in the town of Andes, he was indicted by a Grand Jury in Delaware County for 1st & 2nd degree Rape, Criminal Sexual Act, Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child, Criminal Sexual Act & Endangering the Welfare of a Child, he was also indicted by a Grand Jury in Orange County on similar charges and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail. Police also arrested 80 year old Joan Parks for Failure to Report Child Abuse, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, & she was issued an appearance ticket to the Town of Warwick Court. The State Legislature passed 2 bills this year to ease aggressive medical debt collection practices. The first bill bans medical liens and wage garnishment; the second regulates the billing of so-called “facility fees,” and requires that patients be informed about those fees up front. 112 nonprofit hospitals sued more than 53-thousand patients across the state between 2015 and 2020, some provision will still exist to allow hospitals to sue patients in certain circumstances. 13 other states already have these laws in place.

The New Yorkers Using SNAP or EBT cards reported issues buying food Late Sunday into earlier today, with outages reported at several locations across the country, including New York State. About 5,000 outages were reported, but reported outages had declined by this afternoon, no information has been released about the cause of the outage issues, more information about the programs in New York are available at otda.ny.gov/programs/snap.

Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that 20-year-old Carson Vanco of Endicott pleaded guilty to 1st degree attempted assault in court Friday. On July 26th, Vanco shot a man in the chest with a bow & arrow, he will be sentenced to 8 years in prison and 5 years post-release supervision when he is sentenced on November 29th.

Governor Hochul signed a bill by State Senator Fred Akshar and Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, to rename a portion of State Route 17C after Officer David “DW” Smith. Officer Smith was shot and killed responding to a disturbance in 2014, he served in the Johnson City Police Department for 18 years.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded on August 21st after an Officer observed a stolen vehicle from Syracuse, traveling on Upper Front Street in the Town of Dickinson, the vehicle fled following an attempted traffic stop. A pursuit ended when the stolen vehicle hit another motorists in Binghamton. 26 year old Morgan Schoonmaker was a passenger in the vehicle and was taken into custody as she fled, 31 year old Corey Murry of Syracuse was taken into custody a short time later, both possessed heroin, cocaine, and oxycodone and will face numerous charges when processed

New York State’s new minimum requirements for concealed carry will take effect on September 1st, following a recent US Supreme Court ruling that struck down a century State Law, that required New Yorkers who applied for a concealed carry permit to show to a judge “proper cause,”. The State Division of Criminal Justice Services and State Police released new guidelines for residents looking to obtain a concealed carry permit, more information is available at criminaljustice.ny.gov.
