Nicholas & Terry DeCutler were arraigned in Otsego County Court Monday on 2nd degree Murder charges. The Brothers are accused of fatally stabbing 24 year old Kaleb O’Neill in an alleyway at Dietz Street in Oneonta on Memorial Day. The DeCutler’s were being held on Bail in the Otsego County Jail pending a court appearance on September 19th.

Delaware County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Melanie Moore of New Jersey for failing to stop at a stop sign on Townsend Street in Walton. Moore’s driving privileges had been suspended, she was charged with Failing to Stop at a Stop Sign and Aggravated Unlicensed Operator of a Motor Vehicle, she faces court action at a later date.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that all SNAP households will receive the maximum allowable level of food benefits for the month of August. the additional allotment will result in a $234 million to eligible families, households already near or at the maximum benefit level will receive an additional payment of $95 this month.

Norwich Middle School Principal Michelle Osterhoudt, has accepted the position of Superintendent of the Margaretville School District. Osterhoudt, of Oneonta will take over as the Margaretville Superintendent for the start of the new school year, she had served in the Norwich district for several years, she also served on the Oneonta Common Council and served various capacities for the Oneonta NAACP.

The State DEC has expanded its Drought Watch to about 2/3rds of the state’s land, as dry weather conditions continue. The watch now includes all of the counties south of the Mohawk River Valley, & excludes those in the Adirondacks, Eastern Great Lakes, Westchester County & New York City. DEC Officials are encouraging residents in affected counties, particularly those dependent on private groundwater wells, to conserve water whenever possible during the coming weeks. No mandatory restrictions are in place under a state drought watch.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that 35-year-old Jason Johnson of Nineveh has been found guilty of attempted murder & several other charges for the shooting of State Trooper Becky Seager on June 9th , 2021. Troopers responded to East Windsor Road for a welfare check, Trooper Becky Seager was shot in the hip, which was followed by a 19-hour manhunt, Johnson was found the next day at State Route 79 near the Susquehanna River in the town of Colesville.

Delaware County Sheriff’s office have arrested 47 year old James Amato of Colchester, back on July 12th, Deputies responded to a trespass in progress, where Amato is accused of entering a gated property after being told he was not allowed there. On August 10th, Deputies arrested Amato for Criminal Mischief & Criminal Trespass, he is scheduled to appear in the Town of Andes Court on a later date.

State Police responded to the report of a Car & Motorcycle accident Sunday afternoon on State Route 7 in Afton. 53 year old Julie Lawton of Binghamton crossed over the double yellow and struck the driver’s side of a Jeep Grand Cherokee that was traveling the opposite direction. Lawton was airlifted to Wilson Hospital where she later died of her injuries.

The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force executed 2 narcotics search warrants in Binghamton, at 65 Schubert Street and 216 Court Street. Police found 60 grams of Fentanyl and drug packaging materials at the Schubert Street address, Orlando Torres of Binghamton was charged with 2 Counts each of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia. Police found approximately 15 grams of Fentanyl packaged for sale and other drug packaging materials at the Court Street location, Kaheem Ward of Binghamton was charged with 4 Counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and 2 Counts of Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia.

New York State has announced a statewide pharmacy standing order for all pharmacies for naloxone beginning today. Naloxone blocks the effects of opioids allowing a person to regain consciousness and resume normal breathing. The State health department stated that some pharmacy chains already have provided their own standing orders, covering over 2,600 pharmacies, and independent Pharmacies may now also have naloxone ready for use.

Law enforcement agencies throughout the State are increasing patrols to target speeding through Sunday, as part of Speed Awareness week. Last year, law enforcement throughout the state issued 23,087 tickets for speeding and 32,170 tickets for other vehicle and traffic law violations, such as impaired and distracted driving.

The State Department of Labor announced the conclusion of an identity theft and fraud case from a 2017 investigation. 54 year old Guy Cuomo of Frederick, Maryland, was sentenced yesterday to 45 months after being found guilty of computer fraud, misuse of a social security number, aggravated identity theft, and related conspiracy charges.

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo believes that state taxpayers should pay for his legal defense against the allegations of sexual harassment that led to his resignation from office one year ago. Cuomo filed suit Thursday against the state Attorney General for allegedly violating state law by denying his request to be assigned public assistance for his defense, after Attorney General James denied the former Governor legal counsel. James issued a statement saying: “Taxpayers should not have to pony up for legal bills that could reach millions of dollars so Mister Cuomo’s lawyer can attack survivors of his abuse.”

State Police are investigating the discovery of unidentified human remains, located in a remote area in the town of Morris. The remains are those of an adult female, approximately 4’9”- 4’11” in height, she was wearing Adidas jogging pants, a pink tank top, a black jacket with a pink zipper, and Carolina boots. A silver adjustable ring with a heart and a gold chain necklace were also located. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the New York State Police at 607-561-7400.

Governor Hochul announced that New Yorkers struggling with their electric and gas bills can get assistance from a $567 million assistance program, the majority of the money will help more than 327,000 low-income gas and electric customers pay their August bills. Funding came from the statewide COVID-19 bill credit program adopted by the State Public Service Commission & customers can expect to see the credit on their next billing cycle, beginning this month. The program will eliminate unpaid utility bills for eligible low-income customers who enroll in the Energy Affordability Program by December 31st of this year.

New York State has taken away prisoners’ ability to receive packages sent directly from their family members, in a pilot program going on at select prisons around the state. The Department of Corrections implemented the pilot program in July, in an effort to prevent prisoners from receiving contraband, no timetable has been announced for a system wide implementation of the program.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli’s office audited the Unadilla Valley School District, the audit found that Officials did not establish Non-Residential Tuition rates for special education students as required, & the District’s rates exceeded the State Education Department’s maximum allowable rate during 4 of the past 5 school years. The District overcharged 7 school districts by a total of $183,250. District officials agreed with the recommendations to have the rates in line with state regulations & they planned to initiate corrective action.

The Vestal Police Department released more details about Monday night’s fatal head on accident on the Vestal Parkway, near Binghamton University. Police reported that a 2019 Chevy SUV driven by 21-year-old Stephan Moran of Binghamton crashed head-on into a 2016 Nissan, occupied by Alfred and Paula Latissa of Johnson City. Alfred Latissa was pronounced dead at the scene, Paula Latissa was taken to an area hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Moran was taken to Wilson Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. So far, no tickets have been issued

Over 1,300 of cases of Monkeypox have been reported in New York State so far, about 25% of the nationwide total, the Majority of State cases are downstate. There are 2 vaccines which were developed for smallpox that have been proven to help with Monkey pox, which requires 2 doses, 4 weeks apart, to prevent the disease within a certain timeframe. The State has recevied well over 100,000 vaccines, appointments should be scheduled through your County health department.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that $10 million will be made available to assist in creating and operating threat assessment management teams, to combat domestic terrorism, that will be made up from law enforcement agencies, mental health professionals, & school officials from around the state. The Executive order was issued in response to the Mass Shooting at a Buffalo Supermarket, where Payton Gendron of Conklin is accused of targeting the neighborhood because of a high percentage of black residents.

2 people have been reported deceased following a head on crash on the Vestal Parkway Monday night near Binghamton University. 1 person was pronounced dead at the scene and the 2nd passed away Tuesday at an area hospital, the investigation is ongoing, the names of the deceased have not been released.

The State officials are warning New Yorkers to kill the invasive spotted lanternfly, which were located on Staten Island 2 summers ago, they have migrated throughout New York City, Long Island and into the Hudson Valley. The Spotted Lanternfly feeds on 70 species of plants, including several important New York crops that are important to the state’s agricultural economy. State Police arrested 46 year old Justin Valk of Davenport, for 2nd degree Manslaughter and Criminally Negligent Homicide. Troopers responded August 1st to a residence on Pine Cliff Circle in the town of Davenport for a medical event involving 47 year old Stephanie Valk of Davenport, she was transported to a local hospital, and died on August 3rd. Police accused Justin Valk of being awarde that Stephanie Valk was suffering from a medical event, inflicted additional physical harm, and failed to call for medical assistance, he was arrested and arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $30,000 cash bail or $75,000 bond. The Trial of Jason Johnson of the town of Colesville continues in Broome County Court. Johnson is accused of shooting State Trooper Becky Seager in June of 2021, Jason’s father, David Johnson is accused of tampering with evidence on behalf of his son. Police had been called to the East Windsor Road locations for the report of shots fired, Johnson was apprehended following a 19 hour manhunt, Trooper Seager was hospitalized after being shot in the hip.

Police and Emergency crews responded to the report of a 2 car motor vehicle accident on the Vestal Parkway near Binghamton University last night. 1 person was killed in the accident, the identity of the deceased has not yet been released, the investigation is ongoing.

Law enforcement agencies in Otsego County & the District Attorney’s Office are investigating the discovery of a deceased woman in the town of Morris. The woman was found by 2 people who were using a metal detector in a remote area, the identity of the woman & the cause of death has not been determined, she is believed to have been dead for about 2 months.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 31 year old Kyle Davis of Mohawk for Burglary, Grand Larceny, Crinminal Mischief & endangering the welfare of a child, following an investigation in to a theft at a storage unit facility in the Town of Otego. Davis allegedly burglarized a storage unit while in the presence of a small child, Investigators responded to the Herkimer County Correctional Facility, and took him in to custody, he was processed at the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office, was issued and Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Otego Court and was returned back to the custody of the Herkimer County Correctional Facility.

Sidney Area 1st Responders were dispatched to the report of a tractor trailer going into a ditch in the south bound lane of State Route 8 South of Sidney This Morning. Crews emptied the contents of the trailer for several hours, the vehicle was being removed from the site earlier this afternoon.

Fire Companies from Broome and Chenango Counties responded early this morning to a house fire at 101 Sapbush Road in the Town of Barker at about 3:30 AM. Fire Fighters from Chenango Forks, Whitney Point, Lisle, Greene, Smithville among others were called to the scene, occupants in nearby houses were evacuated, no injuries were reported, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Police responded to the report of a Bomb Threat at the Heath Sciences Building on Corliss Avenue in Johnson City Friday. The threat is being investigated by the University Police Department & local law enforcement agencies & the FBI, the threat was deemed not credible & the building was opened again on Saturday. The State Health Department reported on the latest COVID Statistics Friday, the Positivity rate was almost 8.5% with 6502 positive cases in more than 74,000 Tests. There were 2550 people hospitalized statewide with 224 patients in an ICU, with 81 on Ventilators, there were 20 more deaths reported in Hospitals & Nursing Homes, 73,028 have died from COVID since 2020.

Broome County DA’s office announced that 42 year old Matthew Bowden of Deposit, pleaded guilty to felony Criminal Contempt. In 2021, Bowden Violated a court order of protection by harassing the protected party named in the order. He was sentenced to 1 to 3 years in New York State Prison.

The Delaware County Department of Public Works will be closing County Route 16 in the Towns of Delhi and Franklin to through traffic beginning at 7:00 AM today, through this Thursday to replace several culvert pipes. The State Department of Health updated New Yorkers on the poliovirus, following the identification of polio in early June wastewater samples in Rockland County, the virus has now also been detected in wastewater samples in Orange County. Analysis by the CDC has found 7 positive samples from Rockland & Orange Counties, which are genetically linked to the individual case of paralytic polio previously identified in a Rockland County resident. State Police reported a 104% increase in gun seizures this year compared with same period in 2021. The increase includes a Major Gun Bust by New State Police Unit, where 30 illegal guns were seized, including Assault Rifles and Ghost Guns; with multiple suspects arrested. Delaware County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at D’s Pizzeria in Walton and arrested Damien Falconio on 2 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, 1 count each of Forcible Touching, Unlawful Imprisonment & Persistent Sexual Abuse. Falconio was convicted of 3rd Degree Rape & Sexual Abuse in 2012, he was released from state prison as a Level 3 Sex Offender in August 2016 and just completed his parole supervision in June. Falconio was arraigned and remanded without bail to Delaware County Correctional Facility. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed at a later time.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office, arrested 25 year old Clayton Truax of Roseboom on 2 counts of Assault & Endangering the Welfare of child. Truax is accused of hitting his child with a metal bottle, causing an eye injury, he was remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility on $5,000 cash or $50,000 bond.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office responded Wednesday to a report of a trespass in progress at a Town of Norwich residence. A male and two females were found and detained at the location, the vehicle driven to the residence was reported stolen from New Hartford in June. Deputies Arrested Aaron Gabriel, Tami Lyn Gray of Norwich and Jennifer Pollock of Norwich, for 2nd degree Burglary, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property and Conspiracy, all are being held at the Chenango County Correctional Facility.

The Chenango County Historical Society announced their Summer Barn Party, celebrating 175 years of the Chenango County Fair, tonight from 6:00 to 8:30 PM in the Society’s Loomis Barn, at 41 Rexford Street in Norwich.
