The Norwich Fire Department responded at about 5:00 AM This Morning to a blaze at 104 Mitchell Street, with reports of occupants jumping out of the building. Norwich Police arrived & discovered the 2 victims outside the structure, EMT ‘s arrived & transported the victims to the Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse for burns & injuries, Norwich received assistance from Sherburne & Oxford fire departments, the investigation listed the cause as accidental caused by a chimney fire that extended through the home from an operating coal stove, there were no functioning smoke detectors , no firefighters were injured.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 26 year old Devin Sanchez of New York Mills for Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Criminal Possession of a Ghost Gun, Harassment & Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, following a physical domestic dispute in the Town of Pittsfield. Sanchez is accused of obstructing the victims breathing by restraining by the neck during the dispute, he is also accused of shoving the victim into a wall & he was also found to possess an unregistered/unserialized ghost gun. Sanchez was taken into custody and was held at the Otsego County Jail pending Arraignment.

33 year old Wayne Cirigliano of Sidney, pleaded guilty to 1 count each of Criminal Mischief and Bail Jumping, in Village of Sidney Court, he was sentenced to 5 months’ incarceration for the Criminal Mischief and 5 months’ incarceration for Bail Jumping, the sentences will run concurrently. Cirigliano was ordered to pay $200 in restitution for damage caused at Circle Drive Apartments in Sidney, plus he was also assessed $255 in fines and fees. Last November, Cirigliano damaged property at the Circle Drive Apartments by pushing in a window air conditioning unit and discharging a fire extinguisher into the residence, & on to their vehicle.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 46 year old Lloyd Davis of Worcester, for Predatory Sexual Assault Against a Child, 1st & 2nd degree Rape, Sexual Abuse & Endangering the Welfare of a Child, following an investigation of persistent abuse, which revealed that Davis allegedly subjected minors to physical and sexual abuse over the course of several years. Davis was taken into custody without incident. A search warrant was executed at the residence and evidence was secured. Additional search warrants were executed at a location in the Town of Maryland where additional evidence was located. Davis was processed, arraigned & was remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility without bail.

State Police responded Friday night to a 1-vehicle crash on County Highway 22, in the town of Richfield Springs. 29-year-old Ashley Faubert of Ilion left the roadway and struck a tree. Residents attempted to assist her, including an EMT who initiated CPR until Otsego EMS arrived to transport Faubert to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, where she was later pronounced deceased. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

The New York State Police remind motorists that distracted driving remains to be a top cause of roadway collisions and creates serious danger to first responders and the public, they must also obey the state’s “Move Over” Law, on Sunday on Long Island , a distracted driver crashed into the rear of a State Police patrol car after troopers responded to an MVA on the Southern State Parkway, the patrol vehicle was crashed into by an inattentive driver, both the driver & the trooper were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries.

New York State agency overtime costs increased 22.7% in 2025 for a total of $1.6 billion, while the number of overtime hours increased by 5.9%, according to the annual report by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The size of the state workforce grew for a third straight year in 2025 increasing by 2.7%, Overtime hours and earnings have continued to surge at the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, The figures were influenced by the strike by some Corrections employees that took place between Feb. 17, and March 10, 2025.

The Unadilla Fire Department responded Thursday Afternoon at about 2:10 PM to a reported brush fire in the town of Unadilla. 1st arriving crews encountered a large brush fire making it’s way up a hillside, NYSEG crews responded to turn off power lines, Firefighters were able to contain the fire and then attack any hot spots following the power shut off. An estimated 4.1 acres burned with all crews being back in service around 5:30 PM. No injuries were reported.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that various Municipalities in the Mohawk Valley, received Downtown Revitalization Initiative funds, locally the Village of Morris will receive $4.5 million as winners of the 4th round of the NY Forward program. Morris will invest in sidewalks, streetscapes and housing to strengthen its downtown region in order to make the village a more popular tourist location.

The State Legislature approved of another 7 day extension for the new State budget, it was passed today and will keep the State government running until April 14. The State budget was originally due April 1st, 2 extension have been put in place, the budget has been late for the last 5 years. Sticking points included school aid, car insurance reforms, adjustments to the state’s climate laws and changes to Tier 6 pension rules.

27 year old Delos Thurston of Clinton, pleaded guilty on Tuesday in US District Court to money order fraud. Thurston admitted that between April 2025 and January 2026, while he was employed as the Postmaster of the Morrisville Post Office, he fraudulently issued 179 money orders for his own benefit without paying for them, in the amount of $118,088.19 from the United States. Thurston is scheduled for sentencing on August 6, he faces a maximum term of 5 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of up to 3 years.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 33 year old Joseph Worzel of Deposit for DWI, Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Moving from a Lane Unsafely, Speed not Reasonable or Prudent, & Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, among various Traffic Violations, following a motor vehicle accident in the Town of Masonville. Last Saturday afternoon, Deputies responded to an accident with injuries on State Highway 8, where a vehicle left the road & hit a tree, Worzel was processed & was released on appearance tickets and traffic summonses and was directed to appear in the Town of Masonville Court at a later date.

On December 10th, Colchester Police were assisting a disabled motor vehicle on State Highway 206 when a vehicle operated by 21-year-old Shmuel Neuhaus of Fallsburg, failed to reduce speed & was unable to avoid a collision, striking a vehicle that had slowed down in front of him, then struck the Colchester Police vehicle. Following the investigation, Deputies submitted documentation for an arrest warrant for Neuhaus, On April 3rd, Fallsburg Police Department took Neuhaus into custody, he was taken into custody by Delaware County Sheriff’s Office & was charged with Driving While Ability Impaired by Alcohol, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, as well as several other charges, he was being held pending arraignment.

On April 2nd, Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies observed a vehicle on Division Street in Sidney, pulling out onto Main Street and cutting another vehicle off that was traveling on Main Street. Upon conducting a traffic stop, 66 year-old JeanMichel Letennier of Sidney, was found to have his driving privileges suspended, with a total of 28 suspensions, 26 in the State of New York. Letennier was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, as well as a host of violations of the State Vehicle and Traffic Law. Letennier was processed and transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility to await Arraignment.

79 year old Stanley Suchy of Stamford pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court today to sexual crimes against minors. In November, Suchy was indicted on 3 counts of Predatory Sexual Assault Against a Child, and 1 count of Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child, he agreed to plead guilty to Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child, which includes a term of 10 years incarceration and 20 years of post-release supervision, registration as a sex offender as well as other fines and restrictions. Suchy admitted to multiple instances of sexual contact with a child under the age of 13 between 2010 & 2020. After pleading guilty, Suchy was remanded to jail to await sentencing on April 21st.

State Police will participate in a national distracted driving enforcement campaign as part of April’s National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The “Put the Phone Away or Pay,” will run from Today, through Monday, April 13th. Troopers will conduct targeted enforcement details focused on drivers using electronic devices while operating a motor vehicle. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 3,200 people were killed in distraction-affected crashes in the United States in 2024. During the April 2025 “Put the Phone Away or Pay” campaign, New York State Troopers issued 22,867 tickets, including 4,607 for distracted driving violations.

Patrick Shea was sentenced to 7 years in state prison and 5 years of post-release supervision for 4th Degree Arson and 2nd Degree Manslaughter, in connection with the February 2025 fire at 1 Main Street in Binghamton, that led to the death of Firefighter JR Gaudet, who was trapped under debris while battling the blaze, he later died at Wilson Hospital, Shea pleaded guilty to the charges in January.

The National Weather Service has confirmed that the first tornado of 2026 in New York, The storm initially passed through Gowanda, with reports of wind-driven and accumulating large hail before moving across northern Cattaraugus County on March 31, carving a 1.4-mile path and causing damage consistent with an EF-1 tornado with peak winds of 107 mph.

Delaware County District Attorney’s Office announced a new 2 count indictment against 31 year old David Gensler of Delhi, who remains held in the Delaware County Jail on previous indictments for using a child in a sexual performance, disseminating indecent materials to minors, Rape, Sexual abuse, among other charges, the new indictments alleges bribing a witness & Criminal Contempt for attempting to pay a witness to testify in court, that party had an order of protection against Gensler.

State Police responded Saturday at about 5:00 PM to a report of a car into a house in the town of Oneonta. An investigation at the scene revealed that a 2015 Chevrolet Cruze was traveling west at an unsafe speed while on State Highway 23 in the town of Oneonta when the vehicle went off the roadway and struck a house. The 18-year-old male operator from Schenevus was transported to A.O. Fox Hospital to be treated. Impairment was not a factor in the crash. 2 residents inside the home at the time of the crash were not injured.

On March 24th, a Deputy and a Sidney Police Officer responded to a residence, Oliver was located & was transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility where she was held for arraignment.

The City of Norwich Police Department arrested 33 year old Chad Potter of Sherburne, following a multi-agency investigation into interference with public safety communications. The investigation began in March of 2021, when it was alleged that Potter unlawfully transmitted over a law enforcement radio frequencies on multiple occasions, interfering with police, fire, and EMS operations throughout Chenango County. Potter broadcast false statements, including one transmission of “shots fired, shots fired,” Potter was interviewed and admitted to transmitting over the law enforcement frequency and making the false statements, & having flashing lights on his vehicle, he was charged with 2 counts of Obstruction of Governmental Administration & Making a Terroristic Threat. Potter faces court action at a later date.

45 year old Bernard Barnes of Binghamton was found guilty of Grand Larceny following a Jury Trial in Broome County Court, Barnes served as an aide to an elderly individual to assist an elderly man. Family members of the victim became suspicious after a camera in the victim’s room had been covered with tape, after reviewing available footage, it was determined that Barnes had re-positioned the victim’s bed and accessed a safe, from which he stole approximately $14,000 worth of jewelry. Barnes is scheduled to be sentenced on July 16, 2026, in Broome County Court to 3 ½ to 7 years in New York State Prison.

State Police are warning the public, about scams where individuals are falsely told they are “wanted on a warrant” and must pay money to avoid arrest. Scammers are contacting victims impersonating law enforcement officers, court officials, or government agencies, The victim is pressured to make payment using cash, gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or other non-traceable methods. On April 1, a victim was instructed to meet an individual who was purported to be a law enforcement officer to collect funds at a location in Bainbridge. This would have been the 3rd occasion for a sum of money to be over $100,000. After the victim handed over the cash, Troopers intervened and arrested Tushar Sharma of India for 2nd degree Grand Larceny, Scheming to Defraud & Conspiracy, he was arraigned and was released on his own recognizance, and is scheduled to appear at Bainbridge Town Court on April 20th.

State Police gave an update regarding I-88, which remains closed in both directions between Unadilla (exit 10) and Otego (exit 12) due to considerable erosion under the highway in the median impacting both eastbound and westbound lanes. Emergency repairs are underway. I-88 will remain closed until New York State Department of Transportation engineers determine the roadway is safe to reopen. A 9.5 mile detour is in place along State Route 7 to reconnect motorists back to the Interstate.

State Police arrested 44 year old Adam Smith of Nineveh following an investigation into a stolen Pick up. Smith was charged with Possession of a Forged Instrument, Grand Larceny, Criminal Tax Fraud, Falsifying Business Records along with other similar charges, On March 12, a Trooper was dispatched to a report of a Ford Super Cab stolen from Bainbridge. Troopers spoke to Smith, he claimed he was in possession of the truck, that he purchased the truck in January & returned on March 11 to retrieve it. Troopers learned the truck was registered to both Smith and to the victim, that Smith stole the truck, illegally obtained the title and forged the owners signature, which he submitted to the DMV, Smith was transported to the Delaware County Jail for Arraignment, He is scheduled to appear at the Guilford Town Court on April 28th for 2 charges & Sidney Village Court at a later date to answer to 4 felony charges.

The State Labor Department announced that the the number of private sector jobs in New York State increased over the month by .2%, to 8,483,600 in January 2026. The State’s unemployment rate held constant at 4.6% in January, The statewide labor force participation rate increased to 61.7% in January 2026.

The State budget negotiations will continue, as lawmakers & the Governor failed to get the budget passed by the April 1st deadline, Lawmakers passed a budget extension that funds the government and pays state workers through April 7th.

An Oneida County jury found former Corrections Officer Jonah Levi NOT Guilty of Murder in the death of inmate Messiah Nantwi, he was convicted of manslaughter, gang assault, and filing a false instrument, Levi will be sentenced May 27th in Oneida County Court.
