The State DOT posted an update this afternoon, stating that I-88 is closed for a 9.5-mile stretch between Exits 10 and 12 in both directions, with a detour along State Route 7 currently in place. State Police noticed atypical erosion along the highway embankment that could potentially compromise the safety of the road. Out of an abundance of caution, the highway was closed Tuesday, Engineers are exploring the cause of this erosion, and a contractor is mobilizing in anticipation of emergency repairs along the road. The highway will continue to be closed until our engineers deem it safe to reopen.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that more than $25 million is being awarded to 133 farms in 23 counties across the state through the Climate Resilient Farming Grant Program, for projects to help New York’s farmers reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect water quality, protect and enhance soil health, in the Southern Tier, more than $3.7 Million Dollars has been awarded to 33 farms.

The Unadilla Fire Department announced an update on the I-88 Closure between Exit 10 and Exit 12. I-88 is currently closed westbound at Exit 12, to Exit 10, also the Route 357 bridge over the Susquehanna River is closed at this time, due to tractor trailers being unable to safely navigate the detour turn on to State Route 7. Motorists are urged to allow for extra travel time, and exercise caution while traveling along the detour on State Route 7.

The State DOT & State Police closed I-88 between Exits 10 and 12 in both directions until further notice, A large amount of soil has eroded underneath the roadway, this is not due to a culvert collapse, but to an as yet unknown water issue. Crews from the New York State Department of Transportation are on the scene assessing the issue. Motorists are advised to follow the established detour routes on to State Route 7, Detour signage is in place to guide motorists. Updates will be provided as additional information becomes available from the DOT. Motorists are urged to allow for extra travel time, and exercise caution while traveling along detour on State Route 7.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 45 year old Travis Rifanburg of Oxford for Petty Larceny, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Promoting Prison Contraband, Deputies conducted a traffic stop in the Town of Guilford, Rifanburg had a revoked drivers license and an active warrant for his arrest, he was transported to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office to be held for Centralized Arraignment, he was turned over to Corrections where he was found to be in possession of a quantity of methamphetamine. Rifanburg is to appear in the Town of Norwich Court and the Town of Guilford Court at later dates.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 47 year old Jason Nichols of New Berlin Friday for Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated and Aggravated Unlicensed Operator and several other charges. Deputies responded to State Highway 23 in the Town of New Berlin for a 2 car motor vehicle accident, Nichols who had a revoked New York driver’s license, while intoxicated, he transported to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, was processed & was released to a sober third party and is to appear in the Town of New Berlin Court at a later date.

Binghamton Police announced the recovery of the body of a man that was reported missing for several weeks. The body of 38 year-old Colyn Williams has been recovered from the banks of the Susquehanna River in Vestal. Vestal Police investigating Williams death, the cause of death does not appear to be criminal, the investigation is ongoing.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 52 year old Shawn Fallon of Winfield for Sex Offender Failure to Notify Change of Address & Sex Offender Failure to Submit Annual Verification. The Investigation revealed that Fallon did not report a change of address to the State Sex Offender Registry within 10 days, they were also notified by the Sex Offender Registry that Fallon had failed to submit his annual verification. Fallon was located in the Town of Winfield and taken into custody without incident, he was processed and was issued an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Middlefield Court at a later date.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office received cyber tips from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, they arrested 20-year-old Jose Hernandez Martinez of Oneonta on 7 counts of possessing an obscene sexual performance by a child and 32 counts of promoting a sexual performance by a child, he was also found to be in the country illegally and is originally from El Salvador. Officers found him in the Town of Oneonta and arrested him without incident. He will be held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility until he is arraigned.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 38 year old Jennifer Hewitt of Cooperstown following an investigation into a fraud complaint at 2 Delaware County banks. Deputies were dispatched on March 3rd to a fraud complaint, they learned that Hewitt cashed 2 separate checks at 2 different Delaware National Bank of Delhi locations totaling more than $14,000, she did not have the funds available to cover the checks. Deputies arrested Hewitt for 2 counts of Grand Larceny among other related charges, Hewitt was transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility to await Arraignment.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office announced monthly weekend office hours for pistol permit processing, as well as a new Firearm Safety Course. On Saturday, April 11th, the Identification/Pistol Permit Office will begin Monthly Weekend Office Hours from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM to process pistol permit applications, plus other business for community members who are unable to visit Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 30 year old Nicholas Kahl of Middle Island following an investigation of a larceny complaint. On March 22nd, Deputies were dispatched to a complaint in Hamden, it was discovered that Kahl allegedly stole a tractor from a property without the owner’s consent. Deputies arrested Kahl for Grand Larceny, he was transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility to await Arraignment.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli announced that Wall Street’s securities industry bonus pool reached a record $49.2 billion in 2025, up 9% from the previous year, while the average bonus rose 6% to $246,900. The increases reflect a rise of more than 30% in Wall Street’s profits, which totaled $65.1 billion in 2025. Wall Street accounted for 19.4% of the state’s tax collections in the current State Fiscal Year.

Justin Valk of Davenport was sentenced to 31 years to life in prison in Delaware County Court Wednesday, 25 years to life for 2nd degree Murder, which will run consecutive to the 6 years he was previously sentenced to for Burglary. Valk was also sentenced to 20 years for Assault, and 5 Years for a 2 counts Criminal Possession of a Controlled substance, both of those sentences will run concurrent to the murder sentence. Valk caused the death of his wife, Stephanie by injecting her with multiple doses of Methamphetamine and Fentanyl over a 24 hour period, the evidence was shown to a jury of footage shot by Valk, during a trial in January of his wife suffering from seizures and convulsions.

State Police arrested 62 year old Frank Kovacs of Laurens, on a warrant for 8 counts of Rape, 3 counts of Criminal Sex Act, 3 counts of Sexual Abuse, Investigators received information pertaining to the rape and sexual assault of a child in Saratoga County from 2008 until 2011 in Clifton Park. Kovacs was arrested at his place of employment in Oneonta, and was transported to State Police in Clifton Park for processing. He was then arraigned at the Clifton Park Town Court where he was remanded to the Saratoga County Correctional Facility on $50,000 cash bail, a $250,000 bond, or a $500,000 partially secured bond. In June 2025, Kovacs was arrested by State Police for rape and sex abuse charges following a Otsego County grand jury indictment, this arrest is a continuation of that investigation. Kovacs is also mayor of the village of Laurens.

22 year old Shawn Lynch of Binghamton, pleaded guilty today to 1st Degree Assault & and will serve 9 years in a State Prison, followed by 5 years of post-release supervision. This conviction stems from a shooting on April 13, 2025, in Binghamton. Binghamton Police responded to a report of shots fired and learned that the victim had been transported to Wilson Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery and survived. Police determined that the victim had been following his ex-girlfriend in a vehicle when the 2 became involved in an argument, Lynch was in a nearby driveway & fired multiple shots at the victim, striking him in the arm and chest. Sentencing for Lynch is scheduled for June 24th in Broome County Court.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 26 year old Anthony Lynn of Unadilla for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Introducing Dangerous Contraband, following an investigation in to an inmate being in possession of a controlled substance in the Otsego County Correctional Facility. Investigation revealed that while being admitted to the correctional facility on unrelated charges, Lynn was in possession of cocaine, Lynn turned himself in to the Sheriff’s Office, he was processed, was arraigned and released on his own recognizance.

The State DEC announced another year of safe hunting, nearly 600,000 New Yorkers participate annually, The 2025 hunting season was the safest in New York’s recorded history. The total number of hunting-related shooting incidents was 7, 5 of which were self-inflicted and 2 involved more than one person. 1 incident involved an unlicensed individual who was hunting illegally, DEC also documented 9 falls from tree stands or elevated platforms, including one fatality.

Hartwick College will conduct an emergency response training exercise today, beginning in the late morning and continuing through early afternoon. Emergency vehicles and first responders from local agencies, including the Oneonta Police Department, Oneonta Fire Department, New York State Electric and Gas, Hartwick College campus safety personnel and SUNY Oneonta’s volunteer EMS squad, will participate in the coordinated training effort. The State DEC reported that Hunters harvested an estimated 1,759 black bears across New York during the 2025-26 hunting seasons, which was one of the highest totals in State History. DEC Officials said that the 2025 bear harvest was second only to the 2003 season. The Southern Zone accounted for an estimated 1,202 bears, The Northern Zone saw 557 bears harvested, which was slightly lower than 2024 but still above the 10-year average.

GE Aerospace has announced plans to invest over $11 million at their Facilities over the next 3 years, nearly $3 million at the company’s site in Chenango County. Company Officials said that the latest investment will go toward upgrading new manufacturing and testing equipment, as well as building improvements. 2026 marks the company’s second consecutive $1 billion investment by GE Aerospace, in 17 states & they expect to hire 5,000 workers.

FDA and USDA both report a large spike in food recall recently, total U.S. recalls jumped 21.4% from 2021 to 2025, with 35% of all U.S. food recalls over the last 5 years impacting New York State residents. New York State Residents were affected by 937 recalls over the study period, 388 were Class I recalls, for the most hazardous products, which have higher risks of causing serious adverse health consequences or even death. During the study period, 9.4% of all food recalls originated from New York State producers. The report can be found at traceone.com.

The Chenango County Historical Society was recently awarded a donation by the Stewart’s Holiday Match program totaling $1,250, to support activities designed to share local history with children and families. Chenango County Historical Society collaborates with other community organizations to develop program offerings, including the Afton Arts & Crafts Festival, Colorscape Chenango, Chenango County Open Farm Day, Lt. Warren E. Eaton Airport Day and the YMCA Healthy Kids Day, among many others.

The Cooperstown Boys Basketball Team was crowned as the New York State Class C Champions Sunday after defeating “BERNE KNOX-WESTERLOW” 52 TO 43 in the title game at the Arena in Binghamton. WCDO Sports Director Nate Lull & Coach Greg Bonzkowski broadcast the Play by Play & made the final winning call on WCDO:

The Victor capped off a 27-0 undefeated season, including the buzzer beater Saturday by Jackson Crissman in the state Semi Final game. This is the 2nd state title for the Cooperstown Boys Basketball Team, the 1st was 7 years ago.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 44 year old John Williams of Unadilla following an investigation into a physical domestic dispute that occurred in the Town of Unadilla. Williams was found to have used physical force against the victim while in the presence of 3 children, he was taken into custody after a brief standoff with police at the residence, he was processed and turned over to the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await Centralized Arraignment.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 42 year old Michelle Nichols of Unadilla, for Driving While Intoxicated, Operate Motor Vehicle .08 of 1% or more of alcohol-1st Offense, Speed not reasonable and several other charges, following a property damage motor vehicle accident on State Highway 7 in the Town of Unadilla. Nichols was found to have operated a motor vehicle on public roadway while intoxicated by alcohol, she was taken into custody and was processed and was released with an Appearance Ticket for Town of Unadilla Court at a later date.
