Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that 40 year old James Williams of Port Dickinson was sentenced to 5 years in jail for a guilty plea of Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Williams was arrested in 2019 after Johnson City Police executed a search warrant where Williams was found to be illegally in possession of a sawed-off shotgun.

New York State has updated driver’s licenses and state IDs for the first time since 2013. The new look includes enhanced security features & anyone who applied for a new permit, license or non-driver ID card after March 10th will receive the new and improved card. Enhanced features include imprinted lettering and images which can be felt on the card’s surface, more information is available at DMV.NY.GOV.

Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin submitted his resignation to Governor Kathy Hochul yesterday, after he was arrested following a Federal Investigation. The U.S. Attorney’s office said Benjamin was charged with bribery, honest services wire fraud and falsification of records. Benjamin was accused in an indictment of participating in a scheme to obtain campaign contributions from a real estate developer in exchange for Benjamin’s agreement to use his influence as a state senator to get a $50,000 grant of state funds for a nonprofit organization the developer controlled. Governor Hochul accepted the resignation.

State Troopers responded Sunday to a domestic incident that involved an attempted break-in at a residence on County Highway 54 in the town of Springfield. 37 year old Kenneth Carson of Springfield attempted to enter the home of a known acquaintance and discharged a firearm while outside, he is also accused of having illegal Ghost Guns. Carson was charged with Attempted Burglary, Criminal Use of a Firearm, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Manufacture of a Machine Gun, Reckless Endangerment & Criminal Mischief. Carson was remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $20,000 cash bail or $45,000 bond.

Binghamton Police & First Responders rescued a woman who jumped into the Susquehanna River shortly after 12:00 Noon Tuesday. Officers tried to persuade the woman not to jump into the River, from the Washington Street Bridge, she did & was successfully pulled out by the Binghamton Fire department rescue boats. The unidentified woman was taken to Lourdes Hospital for treatment.

Trout Creek Firefighters responded to a blaze at 9275 State Highway 206 Monday at about 4:00 AM. The house was completely destroyed, nearby structures suffered heat damage, Trout Creek Fire Department received assistance from firefighters from Masonville, Sidney Center, Walton and Sidney Fire Departments, the cause of the fire was accidental and started in the laundry room of the house.

Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville announced that they have named Mike Kerr as the new Director of Parks. State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli announced the results of an audit of the Town of Delhi Highway Department. The Audit claims that Town officials did not accurately maintain employee leave records. Leave balances for the former deputy highway superintendent from 2015 through 2019 were overstated by a total of 362 hours valued at almost $8,000, the former deputy was arrested in September 2020 and charged with grand larceny.

Sidney Police responded Friday to Cartwright Avenue for a report of a man causing a disturbance. Officer arrested 25 year old Peter Tarallo of Sidney after he was found screaming at neighbors in a threatening manner. Tarallo was taken into custody and charged with Disorderly Conduct & Harassment, he was released on an appearance ticket. Sidney Police returned Friday back to Cartwright Avenue, where Tarallo allegedly created another disturbance, he was additionally charged with 2 counts of Harassment, plus Endangering the welfare of a child & Obstruction governmental administration. Tarallo was arraigned in Village of Sidney Court where he was released on his own recognizance to appear back in court at a later date.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal shooting in the Town of Sherburne on Sunday. 1 person was killed Sunday in the shooting, the name of the victim has not yet been released, more information is expected to be released shortly.

A Kirkwood Man with dementia, who was reported missing Saturday, was found dead. 72 year old Fred Moat was snowmobiling in the SNIRT run in Lewis County, he was reported missing, which led to extensive search by Forest Rangers, the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office & local Fire Departments, Moat’s vehicle was found stuck in a driveway in Montague New York Sunday afternoon, he was found deceased in a nearby location.

Governor Kathy Hochul signed a 220 Billion Dollar State Budget plan Saturday, 21 week after the April 1st Deadline. Assemblyman Joe Angelino of Norwich commented on the overspending in the budget:

Angelino added that he voted for just 1 section of the budget that removed the state Gas tax, which he feels benefits all New Yorkers:

The budget suspends 16 cents in taxes off of a gallon of gas through December, also school aid was a record 31.5 billion dollars, & the budget includes a 32.5 Billion dollar five year infrastructure plan.

Binghamton Police arrested 2 19 year olds last week after complaints of suspicious activity on Gerard Avenue. Police stopped a White SUV leaving that area, they found parts to make illegal Ghost Guns. 19 year old Jayvon Phillips & 19 year old Savion Harris, both of Binghamton were charged with criminal possession of a weapon, Phillips was additionally charged with assault & criminal misconduct after trying to escape, and assaulting a police Lieutenant.

On January 2, State Police responded to a home on Poplar Avenue in the town of Hartwick, it was reported by the initial caller that an elderly victim had sustained physical injuries after an unknown person entered her home. Investigators spent months conducting interviews and examining evidence, ultimately leading to the determination that the woman’s physical injuries were caused when she fell inside her home. No criminal activity occurred, the woman passed away several weeks after her fall. She is identified as 86-year-old Flora Polulech. State Police report that there is no threat to the community.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli announced the completion of an audit of the Town Clerk from the Town of Coventry. The audit claims that the clerk did not record, deposit, remit or report all collections in a timely manner. As a result, the town’s collections were at a greater risk of being lost or misappropriated. Penalties were not paid & one taxpayer paid double the amount owed, & the board did not conduct the required annual audit of the clerk’s records.

The American Red Cross is experiencing a blood shortage due to the cancellation of blood drives and has issued an emergency request for all blood types. State Police and multiple fire departments responded to I-81 in Homer for a report of a tractor trailer on fire. An investigation on scene determined that the operator of the tractor trailer, a 45-year-old man from Trenton, New Jersey was operating a tractor trailer belonging to Granger Enterprises, for an unknown reason, he went off the roadway, struck trees and the vehicle became engulfed in flames. The man was later located deceased in the cab.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced an agreement on a budget in the Fiscal Year 2023. The State’s reserves will increase to 15% of State Operating Funds by 2025, the budget will include Tax relief for middle-class New Yorkers and small businesses; it will suspending fuel taxes, authorize the sale of to-go alcoholic beverages; & included investments in pandemic recovery funding, infrastructure & a record investment in clean energy. The total budget is currently estimated at approximately $220 billion.

State Police today are reminding potential candidates that the deadline to register for the Trooper Entrance Exam is this Sunday, April 10th. The exam will be administered through April 30th. Delaware County Sheriff Deputies responded to a domestic dispute at a residence in the Village of Walton on March 26th, 25-year-old Jonathan Stein had left prior to patrols arrival, he is accused of damaging property of the female victim. On March 30th, 2022 Deputies were contacted by Walton Police that they had Stein under arrest on unrelated charges. Deputies took custody of Stein, he was charged with 6 counts of Criminal Mischief, he was processed and released on appearance tickets and is to appear in the Village of Walton Court at a later date.

Sidney Police investigated the theft of tools and construction equipment from a local business last month. Surveillance cameras helped police in identifying the person responsible, & an arrest warrant was issued for 37 year old Peter Puglisi of Afton. On Monday, Sidney Police located Puglisi, he was taken into custody and charged with Petty Larceny, he was arraigned in Village of Sidney Court & he was released to appear back in court at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies, were dispatched Sunday to a Domestic dispute in the Town of Delhi. 28-year-old Michael Stein of Delhi allegedly engaged another person in a physical domestic dispute, and unlawfully imprisoned the victim in his residence. Deputies charged Stein with Unlawful Imprisonment, Menacing, and Reckless Endangerment, he was released on appearance tickets for Town of Delhi Court on a later date.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and the Walton Fire Department responded to the Delaware County DPW Garage in Walton Tuesday. A metal object had been brought to the Garage by an employee for disposal, it was determined to be an antique undetonated explosive device & the State Police Bomb Disposal Unit responded & removed it from the scene. The incident closed several Walton Streets & altered the schedule of the Walton School District, there were no injuries reported.

The FDA announced a recall of Continental Mills pancake and waffle mix sold in New York. The recall was for Great Value Buttermilk Pancake & Waffle Mix, with an expiration date of 9/01/2023. The mixes are sold at Walmarts nationwide. The recall is due to potential foreign material contamination, according to the FDA. Fragments from a cable used to clear the processing line were discovered in a limited amount of product, the FDA states.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who is chair of the Senate Armed Services Personnel Subcommittee held a hearing on suicide in the armed forces, as the rates of suicide among active military people & Veterans has quadrupled since 2001:

Following the hearing, Senator Gillibrand said she sent a letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin calling for details on the department’s actions to address lapses in delivering timely access to mental health care for service members.

Former Binghamton Mayor Rich David filed petitions containing approximately 3,000 signatures to appear on the ballot on the Republican line this fall, in the new 53rd Senate District. 3 Buildings & 4 Vehicles were destroyed in Saturday’s early morning fire on Main Street in Worcester. Firefighters were able to remove one person from 1 of the buildings, Otsego County & State Fire investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire.

Arrested were 30 year old Brett Adams of Norwich & 22 year old Brendan Smith of Norwich for criminal possession of a controlled substance, Adams and Smith were arraigned at Norwich City Court. Brett Adams was held on $1,000 cash bail, and Brendan Smith was released on his own recognizance to appear in court at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched Saturday to the State Hwy 10 and Falls Mills Rd in the Town of Delhi for a report of a male subject walking in the roadway. A 2nd call stated that a male subject had been struck by a passing motorist in that same vicinity. Deputies & Delhi Fire Department & EMS located 18 year old Damyan Bonilla of Chester New York, who was taken to O’Connor Hospital with injuries & he was later transferred to Bassett Medical Center for further treatment. Deputies determined that Bonilla was walking on State Route 10, he was struck by a vehicle, the investigation in on-going.

Congressman Antonio Delgado announced that 11,131 petition signatures were delivered to the New York State Board of Elections for Delgado’s reelection in New York’s 19th Congressional District. State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli issued a statement following the Legislature’s passage of an extender bill to fund state operations, after they failed to come to an agreement on a budget plan: DiNapoli stated that the budget extender bill will ensure that more than 60,000 state employees will be paid this week, but there may be a delay.

Attorney General Letitia James announced that Cross Tie Disposal of Kentucky and company Vice President Harold Young are charged in a 42-count indictment that includes 30 counts of Falsifying Business Records and 11 counts of Endangering Public Health, Safety or the Environment. Cross Tie was supposed to dispose of old wood beams that were coated with creosote at a regulated site in Erie County but instead dumped the ties, contaminated with 11 hazardous substances at a property in Chenango County. The railroad ties have been removed as part of the Chenango County Industrial Development Agency’s Chenango County Rail Revitalization Services project in 2015 to repair and improve railroad tracks throughout the county.

Governor Kathy Hochul’s administration has lifted a 3-month pause on a new law that will require nursing homes to meet minimum standards for staffing and patient care. The law creates minimum staffing ratios and requires that nursing home residents get at least 3.5 hours per day of direct nursing care, it was approved in 2021 in response to the nursing home crisis during the pandemic, when thousands of Nursing Home residents died from the virus.

New York State has reverted to calling the “TASC” program back to it’s original name “GED”, for those interested in earning their High school Diploma, local Program director June White told WCDO News of the programs origins & of their current programs:

Fire destroyed 3 commercial buildings in Worcester Friday Night into Saturday Morning. The buildings were not occupied when the fire broke out, several area fire departments assisted Worcester Firefighters with the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office assisted the US Marshals in executing an arrest warrant in the Town of Maryland on 59 year old Michael Hawkins for failure to register as a sex offender. Hawkins was convicted in 1997 for child molestation in Rhode Island, he faces a maximum term of 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.

Governor Kathy Hochul & the State Legislature failed to pass the state budget on time Friday. Negotiations over bail reform, to-go drinks and New York City casinos stalled the completion of the budget, If the budget isn’t passed today, paychecks for state government employees will be delayed, according to state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli.

The 28th annual Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival will be held September 10th & 11th in East and West Parks in Norwich in Norwich. 95 exhibitors will be at the annual Arts Festival, organizers are also inviting all high school art seniors in Chenango and adjacent counties to apply for Colorscape’s 2022 Francis K. State Senator Fred Akshar was filing his petitions to run for the office of Broome County Sheriff at the Broome County Board of Elections office in Binghamton today. Akshar has collected over 3,100 signatures from registered Republicans in Broome County in support of his run for Broome County Sheriff, Akshar declined to run for re-election after serving in the State Senate for 3 terms.
