Delaware County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest 31 year old inmate Rafael Frias for attempted assault. On October 15th, Investigators with the Delaware County Sheriffs Office received a complaint from the Correctional Facility of an assault between 2 inmates, they arrested Frias, he was arraigned at the Delaware County Centralized Arraignment Court, and was remanded back to the custody of Correctional Facility on other unrelated charges.

The State DEC is investigating the possibility of White Tail Deer in New York State possibly suffering from Chronic Wasting disease, after 1 deer in Herkimer County tested positive for the fatal disease last month. The DEC Statement said that the disease is always fatal, and can spread through certain Deer & Moose populations, they will continue to monitor as hunting season approaches.

State Police at Troop C announced that 42 people were charged with DWI in their coverage area from October 15th to the 30th. In 1 of the cases, a passenger in one of the stopped vehicles is also facing drug charges.

The results are in for yesterday’s Election day, in the U.S. Senate race for New York, Incumbent Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand wins easily, in the U.S. House New York District 19, Josh Riley appears to have won a tight race over Marc Molinaro, in the State Senate District 51 race, Republican Incumbent Peter Oberacker wins by about 20% over Democrat Michele Frazier, in the local State Assembly Races, in the 121 District, Joe Angelino received double the vote over Vicki Davis, in the State Assembly 102nd District, Incumbent Republican Chris Tague wins by a substantial margin over Janet Tweed, and in the 122nd District, Brian Miller wins by a large margin over Democrat Adrienne Martini. in the Chenango County Court race, Republican Diane DeStefano wins easily over Democrat Lisa Natoli, and New Yorkers easily passed the STATE PROPOSITION to add an amendment to protect against unequal treatment.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 3 people after a 3-month investigation into fraud, forgery and identity theft. In August, Deputies received a complaint in regard to stolen funds from multiple accounts, multiple unknown charges and new accounts being opened without consent. Deputies, Sidney Police & State Police and the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office arrested 44 year old Lori Brooks of Sidney, 27 year old Joshua Hunt of Unadilla & 37 year old Matthew Walsh of Sidney on a variety of charges including Grand Larceny, Conspiracy, Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument & criminal possession of stolen property, Brooks was issued an appearance ticket and turned over to State Police for an outstanding warrant & was then turned over to the Otsego County Correctional Facility for arraignment. Hunt was being held at the Otsego County Jail on an unrelated charge, he was processed & was brought back to the Otsego County Jail, Walsh was turned over to the Delaware County Correctional Facility for Arraignment, he will appear at the Village of Sidney Court at a later date, the investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are possible.

A Delaware County Correction Officer discovered an incarcerated individual unresponsive in a cell Tuesday, personnel began conducting lifesaving measures, and emergency medical services were called. Following extensive efforts, lifesaving measures were unsuccessful, and the incarcerated individual was pronounced dead at the Delaware County Corrections Facility by a Delaware County Medical Examiner. The case was referred to the Office of the New York State Attorney General and the New York State Commission of Correction for external review.

37 year old Antwain Greene of Binghamton, was sentenced to 18 years to life for Criminal Possession of a Weapon Friday, in Broome County Court. In September of 2021, Greene was discovered to have a loaded and operable handgun, The Broome County Special Investigations Unit also discovered cocaine, ecstasy, and drug paraphernalia after a executing a search warrant at Greene’s residence in Binghamton.

The State DEC declared a drought watch for 15 New York counties because of a significant shortage of rainfall and declining levels of stream-flow and ground water. The counties under drought watch locally are Delaware & Schoharie Counties, No mandatory restrictions are in place under a state Drought Watch but residents in affected area are advised to conserve water wherever possible.

The State Police at Troop C in Sidney are investigating reports of tampered Halloween candy containing razor blades. The affected candy was reportedly collected in the village of Bainbridge on Halloween night. Parents are urged to Double-check Halloween candy collected by children, Inspect wrappers and contents carefully, if you suspect tampered candy Contact the New York State Police at Sidney immediately & Do not allow children to consume potentially contaminated candy. Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 40 year old Timothy Melius of Pittsfield following a visit by the Otsego County Probation Department. Melius was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon & 3 counts of Criminal Contempt for possessing of firearms & ammunition despite having multiple court orders prohibiting him from possessing them. Melius was taken in to custody and transported to the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office for processing, he was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Pittsfield Court for the above charges. The defendant was then transported to the Otsego County Probation Department where he was processed on a probation violation and arraigned in the presence of an Otsego County Court magistrate. Following arraignment, the defendant was remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await further court proceedings.

The Delaware County Chamber of Commerce announced the launch of the 2025 National Civics Bee, aimed at encouraging more young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities. Middle school students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade from public, private, charter, and home schools from across New York State are invited to take part in the first-round civics essay competition. Following the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 7-6 victory on Wednesday to win the World Series, the team and players have donated several artifacts that tell the story of their championship season, and those pieces will soon take a permanent place in Cooperstown. The Firefighters Association of the State of New York reminds residents that Daylight saving time ends on November 3 at 2:00 AM, they encourage everyone to test their smoke alarms as they turn their clocks back to make sure the devices are working and replace the batteries each year. The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office announces the arrest of Donald Shurock Jr. On Monday, as members of the Sheriff’s Office took custody of Shurock at the Lackawanna County Prison in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Shurock was transported back to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office & was charged with Resisting Arrest and Assault on a Police Officer, for an incident on October 17th in the Town of Pitcher. Shurock is being held at the Chenango County Correctional Facility on a Chenango County Court Warrant and will appear in the Chenango County Court at a later date.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office announces the arrest of 37 year old Tyrell Adams of Pittsfield, who is accused of subjecting minors to persistent sexual abuse & for allegedly killing a family pet in the vicinity of children. Otsego County Family Court issued an order of protection against Adams prohibiting contact with multiple protected parties, he did send Facebook messages to one of the protected parties. Adams was recently located and taken in to custody without incident, he was processed and lodged in the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await Centralized Arraignment for Sex Abuse, Forcible Touching, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Animal Cruelty & Criminal Contempt.

42 year old Dennis Fickeria of Margaretville pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance this week in Delaware County Court. In January, members of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at Fickeria’s residence in the town of Middletown, they seized controlled substances and firearms, he was indicted for 38 counts related to illegal gun possession and drug sales, he admitted in court that he possessed Fentanyl with the intention of selling it, he faces 4.5 years in state prison, to be followed by 1 year of post release supervision, when sentenced on December 16th.

Local government sales tax collections totaled $5.98 billion in the 3rd quarter of 2024, an increase of 1.4%, or $82.7 million, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. 8 of the 10 regions in the state, saw collections rise. Aggregate growth in third quarter collections for the counties and cities outside of New York City was 1.5%, year over year, it was the largest increase so far this year.

Several Area Fire Departments responded to a Chimney Fire at 9 Ceperley Avenue in Oneonta early this morning. The Fire was reported shortly before 4:30 AM this morning, with fire on the 1st & 2nd floor, coming through the roof, mutual aid was received by the Oneonta Fire Department from West Oneonta, Worcester, Sidney, Franklin, Milford, Laurens & Otego, at about 5:30 AM, the Fire knocked down, the investigation into the cause of the fire in ongoing.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office added 2 new deputies following their graduation from the Broome County Law Enforcement Academy. Deputies Tanner Franklin and Michael Smith completed the Basic Police Academy program, followed by a six-week field training course, prior to last Friday’s Ceremony.

56 year old Claude Manon of Margaretville, was sentenced to 6 months of incarceration to be followed by 5 years of probation supervision for Grand Larceny. Manon was accused of stealing over $3,000 in cash from a home he was doing work in on February 1, 2024, in the Town of Middletown, if Manon violates the terms of his probation, he faces one and a third to four years in State Prison.

Otsego County Officials announced that they have a State of Emergency due to current drought conditions adversely affecting the water supply in the county, which increases the risk of wildfires. Otsego County residents are prohibited from burning any combustible materials outside, and they are prohibited in engaging in any activities that could allow for flames or sparks that could result in a wildfire. The Emergency order is in effect until November 2nd.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 33 year old Kyle Packer of Edmeston following an investigation of a violation of a Court Order of Protection. Packer was charged with 2 counts of 3rd degree Burglary plus 4 counts of Criminal Contempt, where Packer is accused of entering the premises and violating a stay away order of protection, he was also found to have left 2 voicemails for the protected party, he was being held at the Otsego County Jail for Arraignment.

The Bissell Pet Foundation worked with the Susquehanna SPCA to get animals affected by the recent southern Hurricanes into their forever homes. Officials went to Binghamton to pick up the animals Friday Night, SQSPCA Executive Director Stacie Haynes explains:

Lambrecht Auction in Sidney announced their 2nd Annual Sidney EMS Charity event to raise money for the Emergency squad, on November 15th. Jared Lambrecht visited WCDO & explained that they are looking for companies to donate items for the fundraiser:

33 year old Shaun Carman of Walton pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in Delaware County Court last week. Carman admitted that on March 13th, in the Village of Delhi, he possessed a quantity of fentanyl with the intent to sell it, he will be sentenced to 2 years in state prison, followed by 1 year of post release supervision, he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending final sentencing on December 16th.

41 year old Brian Canfield of Greene appeared in Delaware County Court for sentencing for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. Back on February 17th, Sidney police observed a vehicle parked and running with headlights on at the Sidney Memorial Public Library after the library was closed, a male was slumped over in the driver’s seat. Canfield failed the Standard Field Sobriety Testing, & drug paraphernalia was found in the vehicle, Canfield admitted that he was under the influence of Amphetamine, Methamphetamine, and Fentanyl. Canfield was sentenced to 5 years’ felony probation, if he violates the conditions of his probation, he is subject to being re-sentenced to 1 and 1/3 to 4 years in State Prison.

23 year old Zachary Hoffman Kowatch of Oneonta was sentenced to 5 years of probation for his guilty plea to Attempted Reckless Endangerment, he was arrested on May 9th by State Police in Fleischmanns, for allegedly swerving his vehicle at a bicyclist and for yelling antisemitic slurs.

Delaware County Board of Supervisors Chairperson Tina Mole issued a State of Emergency and instituted a county-wide burn ban as a prolonged lack of rainfall has caused abnormally dry environmental conditions, including dry ground cover which has increased substantially, leading to a significantly elevated risk of wildfires. The county-wide burn ban is in effect for all open burning, including, but campfires, brush piles, burn barrels, wood-stove ash dumping, leaf/yard debris, and torches or other devices containing an open flame.

State Police and local law enforcement have increased patrols through Halloween, targeting impaired and reckless drivers. The enforcement period began Friday, and it runs through this Thursday, October 31, drivers can expect several sobriety checkpoints and additional DWI patrols. In addition to targeting impaired drivers, law enforcement officers will also be looking for drivers that are distracted or speeding. During last year’s initiative, law enforcement officers issued 32,866 citations and 1,182 drivers were arrested for impaired driving and 6,495 drivers were ticketed for speeding.

Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith announced the unsealing of an indictment against 35 year old Darl Ellis Jr. of Binghamton, after a Grand Jury indicted Ellis. The indictments charged Ellis with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Obstructing Governmental Administration, he is accused of possessing cocaine, if convicted, he faces up to five and a half years in State Prison. Ellis was arraigned before the Delaware County Court, bail was set at $10,000 cash or $100,000 bond. The case is set for a pre-trial conference on November 4, 2024.

On Friday, Broome County Law Enforcement Academy held its graduation ceremony for the Class of 2024 at the Visions Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton. This year, 34 graduates representing 12 law enforcement agencies earned the rank of Officer or Deputy Sheriff, after 6 months of training. 2 of the Officers have been added to the Norwich City Police Department.

Otsego County Health Department reported that a bat tested positive for rabies Friday, the bat was found in the town of Maryland, all animals in the vicinity of the bat were up to date on their vaccinations, any human exposure is being investigated.
