The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 22-year-old Matthew Sieger of Bainbridge Tuesday for 2nd degree Burglary & Criminal Possession of Stolen Property.   Sieger is accused of breaking into someone’s home with another person & stealing several items. Sieger was arraigned in the Town of Coventry Court and was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional facility on $2,500 cash bail, he’ll appear in the Town of Coventry Court at a later date to answer to his charges.

SUNY Oneonta is sponsoring a program called “Reducing Gun Violence,” tonight at 7:00 PM in the Red Dragon Theater on campus. The program will identify and evaluate remedies for reducing gun violence. After formal remarks by the panelists, a question-and-answer session will follow.   The program is open to the public.

Members of the public learned how to administer Naloxone, a medication that counters the effects of drug overdose, during a free training session yesterday at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton. Lourdes Hospital’s Youth Services Program in Binghamton hosted the free training session along with the Southern Tier AIDS Program. The medication is intended to revive someone experiencing an overdose of drugs like heroin, oxycodone, methadone and Vicodin. Lourdes has planned another session for December 9th.

The National Weather Service kicked off its Winter Weather Awareness Week yesterday.   The NWS recommends people stock up on a three-day supply of food and water, start planning alternate heating options and winterize cars. The National Weather Service recommends not only having proper tires, windshield wipers, and fluids but also stocking cars properly, in the event that you get stranded. You should have a warm blanket, a cell phone, a charger and non-perishable food in your car at all times.

New York legislators are now encouraging health care professionals to travel to West Africa to treat Ebola patients. Governor Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a program to provide financial incentives and other employment protections to those who volunteer. The state will work to make sure workers would have their pay, health care, and employment statuses continue when they get back.

The results are in from yesterday’s elections. In statewide races, Governor Andrew Cuomo, State Attorney General’s Eric Schneiderman & State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli win re-election by healthy margins, and all 3 state propositions pass. In the 19th Congressional District Incumbent Chris Gibson is re-elected, in the 52nd State Senate district, Incumbent Tom Libous is the winner, in 121st Assembly District, incumbent Bill Magee wins again, & Broome County Sheriff David Harder is re-elected.

In local races, for the Sidney Town Board, Republican Jody Proffitt defeats Loddie Marsh by a small margin, in Oneonta, Patricia Kent wins re-election to the town board by a large margin, in Franklin, Republicans Donald Smith and Lisa Huyck win 2seats on the town council

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested Ganesh Ramsaran for 2nd degree Bribery; he is accused of offering a Chenango County Corrections Officer of $100,000 to aid in his escape from the Correctional Facility. Ramsaran was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and remanded back to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $1,000,000 Dollars Cash Bail or $2,500,000 Property Bond, he’ll return to the Town of Norwich Court at a later date. The investigation is continuing with additional charges possible.

The State DEC amended its Chronic Wasting Disease regulation, to prohibit people from importing into New York certain parts of white-tailed deer, elk or moose taken in the state of Ohio. In late October, the Ohio Department of Agriculture confirmed a case of Chronic Wasting Disease in a white-tailed deer, 1 has also been confirmed in Pennsylvania.   Hunters who plan to hunt white-tailed deer, elk or moose in Ohio or Pennsylvania must remove the brain, eyes, spinal cord, tonsils, intestinal tract, spleen and lymph nodes before returning to New York with a deer, more information is available at dec.ny.gov.

NYSEG will inspect natural gas transmission rights of way in the Oneonta region this week. The inspections will be done by helicopter, enabling company officials to spot & correct vegetation & encroachment issues that could hinder repair crews. The helicopter inspections will occur today & tomorrow.

P.M. NEWS TUESDAY 11-4-14

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office responded to a motor vehicle accident on Preston Center Road near County Road 4 in the Town of Preston Monday afternoon. Deputies reported that a 20-year-old male fell off of a moving motor vehicle; he was transported by helicopter to Wilson Hospital and is in critical condition. The accident is still under investigation.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office investigated a 1-car motor vehicle accident involving 3 occupants on State Highway 320, near the intersection of Tiffany Road in the Town of North Norwich Last night. The vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a ditch. Two occupants of the vehicle were transported by ambulance to the hospital. The other occupant was transported by helicopter to Wilson Hospital and is in critical condition. The accident is still under investigation.

The State DEC, Cornell University & the USDA Animal Plant Health Inspection Service have confirmed emerald ash borer Beatle in both Westchester and Broome counties. The beetle was found in DEC-deployed traps just north of the city of Peekskill in Westchester County, and southeast of Binghamton in Broome County. The DEC urges residents and municipalities to inventory their ash trees and inspect them for signs of infestation. Homeowners and municipalities can contact the nearest DEC Forestry Office for technical assistance and management recommendations to prepare for the latest threat. The Sidney memorial public library, along with their Masonville & Sidney Center Branches, will accept non-perishable food items in lieu of overdue book fines. Those who bring in an overdue book along with a food donation per book, will have overdue fines waived, the donated food items will go to area food banks for the upcoming holiday season.

State Police at Oneonta arrested 31-year-old Jody Currie of Oneonta for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs and Alcohol and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana.  The arrest resulted from a traffic stop in Milford, Troopers accuse Currie of driving while impaired by drugs and alcohol, he submitted to a urine test with the lab results pending.  Currie was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Milford Court on November 25th.

The state was selected locations in France, Italy, Washington state California. Governor Cuomo has hosted 2 Beer, Wine, Spirits and Cider Summits to help the businesses grow. It’s Election Day, with the big races on the ballot. The race for governor pits incumbent Democrat Andrew Cuomo, against Republican Rob Astorino & Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins is on the ballot again. In the State Attorney General’s race, Incumbent democrat Eric Schneiderman faces Republican John Cahill. In the race for State Comptroller, incumbent Democrat Tom DiNapoli faces Republican Robert Antonacci. In races of local interest, for the 19th Congressional District, Republican Incumbent Chris Gibson faces democrat Sean Eldridge. In the 52nd State Senate district, Incumbent Republican Tom Libous faces Democrat Anndrea Starzak. In the State Assembly in the 121st Assembly District, incumbent Democrat Bill Magee faces a challenge from republican John Salka. In Sidney, Republican Loddie Marsh is running on the Democratic party line, while Jody Proffitt carries the Republican spot on the ballot for a town council seat. In Oneonta, Patricia Kent faces independent David Rowley for a town board seat. InFranklin, Republicans Donald Smith and Lisa Huyck are vying for two seats on the town council against independents Donald Hebbard and Bryan Babcock. There are also 3 propositions on the ballot; 1 proposal seeks to reform the redistricting process to an independent commission. The 2nd measure have lawmakers receive copies of proposed legislation digitally rather than on print out, the 3rd would allow the state to borrow up to $2 billion for high-speed Internet, equipment & high-tech security features for schools.

Insurance company AIG has agreed to pay New York state $35 million to settle claims that two former subsidiaries did business without licenses and misled regulators about their operations in the state. The deal was announced by the state Department of Financial Services. It comes after a $60 million settlement in March with MetLife, which purchased the subsidiaries from AIG. Authorities had alleged subsidiaries American Life Insurance Co. and Delaware American Life Insurance Co. sought customers in New York without licenses and without telling regulators. Under the settlement, AIG will drop a legal challenge to the state’s probe and the state will not proceed with charges or a lawsuit

A felony hearing was held Friday in Bainbridge Town Court for 56 year old John Guzy of Bainbridge, charged with second-degree murder in the death of 26 year old Derek Prindle of Afton. Friday’s felony hearing served to send the case before a grand jury in county court. At the close of the hearing, Bainbridge Town Judge Brian Barnhart denied a request by Assistant Chenango County Public Defender Aaron Dean to dismiss the murder charge. Guzy remains held in the Chenango County jail without bail. If convicted of second-degree murder, he faces a maximum of 25 years to life in state prison.

New texting-while-driving laws are now in effect. First-offense convictions of texting or talking while driving will impose a 120-day license or permit suspension for young drivers under 21 with junior licenses. A maximum fine for all violators for a first offense will rise from $150 to $200. For a second offense — committed within 18 months of the previous offense — fines will increase from $200 to $250. A third violation or subsequent violations committed within 18 months will increase from $400 to $450.

State Troopers arrested 45-year-old Daniel Caulfield of Oxford for 3rd degree Assault. The arrest resulted from a complaint at the Valley Ridge Center for Intensive Treatment in Norwich, where the investigation determined that during a dispute with a resident, Valley Ridge employee Caulfield punched the resident in the mouth causing an injury. Caulfield was issued a ticket returnable to the Town of Norwich Court on November 6, 2014.

a Town of Norwich woman was arrested twice in 2 days by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office. 28-year-old Jovonne Woolever was charged with Failure to appear on criminal possession of a controlled substance charges, she was taken into custody without incident and arraigned in the City of Norwich Court, she was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $1,000 cash bail. the following day, Deputies arrested Woolever for 1st degree Promoting Prison Contraband, for allegedly possessing narcotics while being booked into the Chenango County Jail. She will appear in Court on November 6th on the later charges.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 40-year-old Rollins Crane of North Norwich following an investigation into a domestic dispute where Crane was found to have subjected the victim to unwanted physical contact in the presents of young children. Crane was arraigned on charges of 1st degree Harassment & endangering the welfare of a child, he was released until a later court date.

The $138 million reconstruction of the Gilboa Dam has been completed with a ceremony held Friday. The project included the addition of 234 million pounds of concrete, molded and dyed to resemble the original bluestone face of the dam, more than 500 spillway slabs, and upgrades to the abutment walls that support the dam. The project was completed two years ahead of schedule. The new dam includes instruments to constantly measure stress on the dam and will allow engineers to visually inspect the inside and outside on a regular basis.

A Port Crane woman was arrested last night after multiple syringes, one of which was loaded with heroin, were found in her purse during a traffic stop on Rte 11 in Kirkwood. 27 year old Mandy Holmberg was charged with one count of criminal possession of a controlled substance and one count of criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument. Holmberg was released on appearance tickets in town of Fenton Court at a later date.

Hundreds attended a memorial for Oneonta Mayor Dick Miller yesterday, the memorial was held at the Foothills Performing arts Center, Miller took his own life in his home on Saturday October 25th.

Governor Cuomo announced the rate that employers pay to State’s workers’ compensation system is dropping again in 2015, resulting in savings to all employers totaling $45 million. The savings are a result of the 2013 Business Relief Act which has cut the assessment rate for employers by 30% over the last 2 years.

9 former major league players and one former executive comprise the 10-name Golden Era ballot to be reviewed and voted upon December 8th at the Baseball Winter Meetings in San Diego for induction into the National baseball Hall Of fame. Among those who are being considered, Gil Hodges, who was named to 8 All-Star Games in an 18-year big league career with the Dodgers and Mets, winning three Gold Glove Awards, & as a manager, Hodges led the 1969 Miracle Mets to the World Series title.

Governor Cuomo signed legislation that will expand access to potentially lifesaving medication for students and school personnel in the event of an emergency. The new laws include provisions that will allow schools to administer epi-pens to students without prescriptions in emergency situations and that will allow students diagnosed with asthma, allergies and/or diabetes to self-administer prescribed medical treatments. One new law authorizes schools to possess and administer auto-injectable epinephrine, in an emergency situation, even if the recipient of such treatment does not have a prescription.
