The State DEC announced that more than $3 million was awarded to 45 not-for-profit land trusts across the state, through the Conservation Partnership Program, which will support 61 projects designed to support land trusts for the prevention of farmland Conversion, Water Quality and conserve open space. Locally, $98,000 will go to the Otsego Land Trust: for Professional Development, they also will receive a Transaction Grant for $22,000, the Chenango Greenway Conservancy will receive a Capacity Grant, for $18,750

Commerce Chenango announced that they will hold an Open House at their new location at 19 East Main Street in Norwich, on Wednesday June 25th from 4:30 to 6:30 PM, those in attendance will get to see the plans for the Early Learning Center that will be located on the 1st floor of that building.

Former Area Congressman Chris Gibson has written his 3rd book, entitled “The Spirit of Philadelphia: A Call to Recover the Founding Principles”, he told WCDO News what he has been up to since leaving Congress in 2017 & about his book published last week:

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 46 year old Wesley Wyckoff of Susquehanna Pennsylvania for 2 counts of Burglary, plus Criminal Mischief, Possession of burglar Tools and Criminal possession of a controlled Substance. Early Tuesday morning, deputies responded to report of a burglary on Colesville Road in the Town of Kirkwood. Upon arrival, they found a man, later identified as the property owner, standing near a pickup truck and pointing a handgun at another man, who was dressed in dark clothing and wearing what appeared to be a mask. Both the property owner and the other man complied with verbal commands from law enforcement, they determined that the property owner discovered a masked man, confronted him & pointed his legally registered handgun at him and called 911. Multiple buildings and a vehicle were damaged and broken into, Wyckoff possessed a screwdriver, pliers and methamphetamine. Wyckoff faces court action shortly.

30 year old Joseph Osei of Canada was convicted in US District Court for 4 counts of mail fraud, 1 count of access device fraud, and 2 counts of aggravated identity theft for fraudulently obtaining COVID-19 pandemic-related unemployment insurance benefits from New York State using stolen identities. Jurors deliberated for less than 2 hours before returning a guilty verdict on all counts, from August through November 2020, Osei fraudulently obtained unemployment insurance benefits from the State Department of Labor worth more than $100,000, he also defrauded agencies in California, Rhode Island, and Arizona using stolen identities. Sentencing is scheduled for September 23rd, the mail fraud convictions carry a maximum term of 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of up to 3 years. The access device fraud conviction carries a maximum term of imprisonment of up to 15 years.

The State Department of Transportation announced that Phase I Detours will begin for the Roundabout Project in the City of Oneonta, on Monday, June 2nd and will be continuing for approximately 3 months, weather permitting. Access to the intersection will only be available from Lettis Highway northbound to Main Street eastbound and from Main Street eastbound to Lettis Highway southbound. Motorists are urged to follow separate signed detours for cars and trucks. Passenger vehicles traveling on Main Street will be detoured onto Otsego Street, Fair Street and Grand Street around the construction. Delaware County Sheriff’s Office announced that of 51-year-old Eric Dellafiora of North Blenheim, has been arrested on an Arrest Warrant issued out of Schoharie County for failing to appear on charges of Traffic Offenses, Fleeing an Officer, Weapons Offenses, and Obstruction Charges. On Sunday, a Deputy noticed a suspicious vehicle and person at a business that was closed within the Town of Harpersfield, Dellafiora was discovered to have an Arrest Warrant stemming from Schoharie County & was turned over to Schoharie County Sheriff’s Deputies to be processed on the Arrest Warrant.

State Police issued a total of 12,062 tickets statewide during the Memorial Day Weekend enforcement campaign, that ran from Friday May 23rd to Monday, May 26th. Troopers arrested 245 people for DWI and investigated 774 crashes, with three fatal crashes reported. Locally, Troopers reported 15 DWI arrests, 299 Speeding tickets, 26 Distracted Driving tickets, 126 Seat Belt violations and 31 move over law violators.

DCMO BOCES announced that the Regional Spelling Bee winner, 13 year old Margot Fieni from Oneonta High School, is competing at the National Spelling Bee competition in National Harbor Maryland. Fieni successfully completed the spelling and the vocabulary preliminary competition round at the 2025 National Spelling Bee Competition today, she now moves to the Round Three Test that determines which competitors advance to the quarterfinals level.

State Police Superintendent Steven James announced that a meeting was held at Troop A in Batavia regarding human trafficking & other security issues at the Northern Border. State Police officials met with those from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, the Buffalo Police Department, Erie County Sheriff’s Office, Niagara Falls Police Department, and the New York State Park Police. The meeting was held in light of more trafficking issues coming across the Canadian border into the US in increasing numbers.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies received a complaint last week of property damage in the Town of Walton. Troopers determined that 27 year old Siara Mettler of Walton had unlawfully damaged a 2024 Chevrolet Trax, located at a residence on Beers Brook Road located in the Town of Walton. Mettler was charged with 1 count of Criminal Mischief, was processed & arraigned, an order of protection was issued protecting the victim from further contact. Mettler was released and directed to return to the Town of Walton Court at a later date to answer for the said charge.

A Delaware County Grand Jury returned an 8-count indictment against 20 year old Mario Sierra of East Meredith, on multiple counts of of Rape & Criminal Sexual act Sierra is accused of performing sexual acts with a minor under the age of 15, in the City of Oneonta, & in the Town of Meredith. Sierra appeared in the Delaware County Court on Friday for arraignment, Bail was set at $25,000 cash, $50,000 bond or $100,000 partially secured bond, he was remanded to the custody of the Delaware County Correctional Facility.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 47 year old Eric Bormann of Laurens, on 3 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Criminal Possession of a Firearm and Harassment. Deputies responded to a domestic dispute in the Town of Laurens, Bormann was also found to be in possession of a semi-automatic handgun without a State Pistol Permit, he was issued an Appearance Ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Laurens Town Court at a later date.

State Police reported that 3 people were transported to UHS Wilson Medical Center after a serious crash in the town of Nanticoke, at about 3:00 PM Sunday. Troopers were dispatched to Nanticoke Road and Henry M. Baldwin Street in the town of Nanticoke for an accident with injuries. An initial investigation indicates that an SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed struck a pick-up truck that was turning left onto Nanticoke Road. The SUV continued off the roadway and overturned. All three occupants of the SUV were transported by ambulance to UHS Wilson Medical Center for serious injuries. The occupant of pick-up truck was not injured. The investigation is on-going.

The State DMV is warning customers to be aware of the latest phishing scam, where bad actors seek to gain access to personal information by pretending to be from the DMV. This is the latest in a series of text message phishing schemes that DMV has warned New Yorkers to avoid. Previous scams have claimed that E-ZPass accounts were about to be suspended. DMV provides information on these phishing attacks on its website at dmv.ny.gov.

The State Police “Buckle Up New York, Click It or Ticket” campaign will continue through June 1. Police will have additional patrols, conduct more traffic stops, and will maintain a zero tolerance policy for unbuckled drivers and passengers. Seat belts reduce the risk of injury or death in a crash by 20%, an average of 200 New Yorkers die each year due to not buckling up.

The General Clinton Canoe regatta gets underway today with activities on the river & at General Clinton Park, Sunday will be the big day with the 70 mile races from Cooperstown to Bainbridge, as well as activities in the park, according to Regatta Co-Chairman Mike Kaufman:

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced the Environmental Facilities Corporation Board of Directors approved over $37 million in financial assistance for water infrastructure improvement projects across New York State, locally, the Village of Otego was awarded $3.9 million in grants for the installation of a redundant production well, replacement of asbestos-lined pipe and exposed water main, relocation of a well house treatment building to a higher elevation, replacement of a booster pump station, and the installation of a tank mixer.

State Police conducted an Underage Drinking detail in Otsego and Delaware Counties, all of the businesses checked were in compliance and did not sell alcohol to an under-aged operative. 12 Businesses complied, including Mirabito Quickway stores in Oneonta, Laurens, Hartwick, Colliersville, Otego, Unadilla & Davenport. During these investigations, businesses are checked utilizing a Trooper in plain clothes and one or several underage operatives who cannot lie about their age or provide a false date of birth (if asked).

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 42 year old Ryan Darran of Stamford, for DWI, following an investigation of a motor vehicle accident on May 17th. Deputies responded to a 1 car accident on State Highway 23 in the Town of Harpersfield, the vehicle left the roadway and entered a ditch, Deputies interviewed Darran & charged him with DWI and other lesser charges, Darran was released on appearance tickets for Town of Harpersfield Court at a later date.

Governor Hochul announced that more than $50 million has been awarded to 50 projects through the State’s Restore New York Communities Initiative. Locally, the Village of Cooperstown will get $1 million to demolish 217 Main Street, in favor of a 50-unit, 3-story apartment building. The Village of Franklin will receive $1 million to rehabilitate 3 vacant properties at 438-444 Main Street to be redeveloped into 5 new commercial businesses and a new apartment. The City of Norwich will receive $1 million for the former office building at 23 East Main Street to be repurposed for a childcare center, the 2nd floor will house Commerce Chenango offices with a reception area, The site’s emergency generator and location also position it for FEMA shelter designation, further strengthening community resilience.

Governor Hochul announced that contracts have been executed for 26 large-scale land-based renewable energy projects that, upon completion, will provide more than 2.5 gigawatts of clean energy, powering more than 670,000 homes throughout the State. The projects are expected to create more than 1,900 jobs and generate more than $6 billion in private investment statewide. Contracted projects include the High Bridge Wind, in Chenango County.

City of Oneonta announced that a new traffic pattern will go into effect starting Monday, June 2nd as part of Phase I of the State DOT’s Reconstruction Project of the Main & Maple Street Roundabout project. There will be Road closures that will impact Main Street, Lettis Highway, and Maple Street where they intersect. Route 23 Northbound traffic may turn onto Route 7 Eastbound, Route 7 Eastbound traffic may turn onto Route 23 Southbound,all other routes through the intersection will be closed to traffic. Detours will be in place.

Oneonta Fire Department responded at about 1:30 this morning to a structure fire at 5 Grand Street. An Occupant in 1 of the apartments reported a kitchen fire, crews found light smoke showing from the exterior of the building, they encountered heavy smoke and poor visibility on the 2nd floor, they located the involved apartment and quickly extinguished the fire. The Department reported that all 6 residents from the 3 affected apartments have been displaced and will remain so until repairs can be completed. 1 occupant was taken to A.O. Fox Hospital for evaluation, 1 resident’s cat perished in the fire. Assistance was provided by the Sidney Fire Department FAST Team, West Oneonta Fire Department was on stand-by, the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Locally, Voters in the Sidney Central School District approved the budget 147-43, they also passed the bus proposition & the Sidney Luibrary budget, Bainbridge-Guilford School Budget passes 180-78, Franklin had their budget, bus & library votes passed, other local who schools who reported budget votes passing by substantial margins were Unatego, Oneonta, GMU, DEPOSIT, WALTON, Afton, UNADILLA VALLEY, Greene, Harpursville.

Due to inclement weather, Wednesday’s Rumble Ponies game against the Richmond Flying Squirrels at Mirabito Stadium has been suspended with the score 2-2 entering the top of the sixth inning. The suspended game will resume on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The regularly scheduled game Thursday night will begin approximately 40 minutes after the conclusion of the suspended game. Fans can exchange their tickets to Wednesday’s game for any remaining Rumble Ponies home game this season.

41 year old Christopher Davis of Oneonta, pleaded guilty to Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child in Delaware County Court Monday. Davis engaged in sexual conduct against a child less than 13 years old for almost 8 years, starting while the child was only 7 years old and continuing until she turned 13, between 2012 and 2018. The case was scheduled for a two-week jury trial slated to begin Monday, Davis admitted Friday to the charges, he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility, without bail, pending his sentencing on July 15th, Davis is expected to serve 10-12 years in State Prison followed by 20 years of post-release supervision, he will be required to register as a sex offender & a full stay away order of protection ‎will be issued on behalf of the victim until 2065.

State Police announced this afternoon that missing teen Damian Mazza-Siragusa was found safe by Endicott Police today & he was checked out at a local hospital. The 17 year old was reported missing after leaving Deposit late Saturday Afternoon.

State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for April. the State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held steady at 4.2%, Locally, Chenango County Had 3.0%, Delaware County 3.4% and Otsego County 3.5% unemployment rates in April.

The Delaware County Chamber of Commerce had their Re-brand Launch Party at SUNY Delhi Monday, President Ray Pucci said that the new brand is the “Delaware County Business Alliance”:

State Police announced the annual “Buckle Up New York, Click It or Ticket” campaign officially kicked off Monday and runs through June 1. During this time, Police will have more patrols, conduct more traffic stops, and will maintain a zero tolerance policy for unbuckled drivers and passengers. Seat belts reduce the risk of injury or death in a crash by 20%, an average of 200 New Yorkers die each year due to not buckling up.
