39-year-old Brent Fallon of Binghamton is in Critical Condition after he was badly burned at a NYSEG substation in Binghamton recently. Fallon sustained 2nd and 3rd-degree burns over much of his body, he was taken to Wilson Hospital & was later transferred to the burn unit at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

The Matthews Auto Group raised $153,561 at the 7th Annual Matthews Walk-A-Thon to benefit 13 kids’ charities in New York & Pennsylvania. Chenango County Child Advocacy Center in Norwich receives $14,679 from the efforts of the Norwich area Walk-A-Thon, Matthews Auto donated $10 per mile for every mile walked by registered participants, to the charity or charities of the walker’s choosing, $593,739 has been raised by the Matthews Walk-a-thon since the event’s inception 7 years ago.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 31 year old Kathrine McFadden of Texas following the investigation of a motor vehicle accident in the Town of Maryland. McFadden was located at the accident scene and found to be operating the vehicle while intoxicated, she was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated DWI .18% or More of Alcohol, Failure to Keep Right, Moved From Lane Unsafely, among several other charges, she was processed and released with an Appearance Ticket and for Town of Maryland Court at a later date.

State Police are urging residents to take a simple precautions to prevent vehicle related thefts. Troopers have responded to reports of thefts from unlocked vehicles, Most recently, in West Oneonta sometime between the hours of 9:00 pm. on October 9 to 7:30 am. on October 10. Vehicles were rummaged through, a wallet was stolen and Police remind residents to Always lock your car, Never leave valuables in plain sight, Do not leave keys or key fobs in your vehicle, Install cameras or flood lights at your residence & Report any suspicious activity by calling 9-1-1.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate, 38 year old Chelsey Davis of Port Dickinson, who was remanded to the jail by the Town of Chenango Court last week. Davis received a full medical and substance abuse screening, She was then housed in the Medical Unit & was later seen by medical staff for a 2nd time, medical staff were called back to her housing unit for a third examination. Staff reported finding Davis responsive and not exhibiting any issues, 20 minutes later, she experienced a medical emergency, staff administered CPR and used a defibrillator, but were unable to revive her. An autopsy was conducted and full results have not yet been received.

State Police responded to a 3 vehicle crash on State Route 12 in the town of Greene, where a Mazda driven by 22 year old Makayla Cummings of Utica, was traveling south on State Route 12, when she crossed into the opposing lane, striking a Ford Focus head-on, driven by 44 year old Angel Kiekel of Nineveh. Cummings continued off the roadway and struck a parked Honda Civic, then she struck the exterior of a residence. Cummings & Keikel were both transported to Wilson Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, Cummings faces charges for the incident.

30 year old Karl Calhoun pleaded guilty in Broome County Court to Attempted Rape & Criminal Possession of a Weapon. On August 24th, Calhoun forcibly attacked a female, struck her multiple times, strangled her, and forcibly removed her clothing, she was able to resist the attack and escape to safety, the incident was captured on video surveillance, on September 5th, Vestal Police Department conducted a traffic stop on Calhoun, a search uncovered a loaded pistol with an extended magazine containing 9 live rounds, Calhoun will be sentenced to 10 years in state prison for Attempted Rape and 7 years for Criminal Possession of a Weapon, the sentences will run concurrently, and Calhoun will be required to register as a sex offender and an Order of Protection will remain in effect.

State Police are reminding the public to be aware of phone scams that tell a victim to withdraw large sums of money or buy gold bars to “protect their assets”. Scammers will call asking if the victim made a large purchase on Amazon, if they did not, the caller is told that their identity and social security number have been stolen, they are “transferred” to someone who claims to be from a credit union or a bank and advises that the victim to withdraw their money or purchase gold bars so that it can be held for “safe keeping”. The scammers will send a “courier” to collect the money or gold bars. State Police BCI announced the arrest of 41 year old Akash Thakkar of Hiawatha, New Jersey for Grand Larceny for a June 2024 larceny where scammers swindled $500,000 in gold bars, Troopers were able to identify Thakkar as the man who picked up the gold bars, he was processed & was turned over to the Tompkins County Jail for Arraignment.

Delhi Police Department arrested 23 year old Xavier Calderon of New City on 2 counts of Criminal Trespass, on September 27th Calderon allegedly broke into a residence and when confronted by the occupants, claimed he was retrieving property he had left there the previous night, the investigation revealed that Calderon had been inside the residence on September 26, when the tenants were away, and that he had slept in one of the bedrooms without permission. The tenants reported that they do not know Calderon and had never authorized him to be inside the home. Calderon was taken into custody, was processed and transported to for arraignment, where a Temporary Order of Protection was issued.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal motor vehicle accident on I-81 in the City of Binghamton Thursday morning. Broome County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol and emergency personnel responded to a 3-car accident on I-81 south at the off ramp of Exit 12, they found a U-Haul truck on fire with the driver entrapped in the vehicle, they attempted to extinguish the flames, the U-Haul operator was extricated and transported to Wilson Medical Center, but was was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The U-Haul was towing a vehicle, after merging from Route 17 and was approaching the off ramp of Exit 12 when an SUV attempted to merge across several lanes and struck the U-Haul, causing the operator to lose control and collide with a DOT attenuator truck. The identity of the deceased will be released pending notification of next of kin.

Delhi Police Department arrested 21 year old Logan Hitchcock of Delhi on charges of 3rd degree Assault, Unlawful Imprisonment and Endangering the Welfare of a Child following a domestic incident in the Village of Delhi. Officers were dispatched to a reported domestic dispute on Meredith Street, they determined that a verbal altercation had escalated into a physical incident, during which a female victim sustained injuries while holding an infant, she was taken to O’Connor Hospital, Hitchcock was located and taken into custody, He was processed and was arraigned, a Temporary Order of Protection was requested on behalf of the victim and child.

This week, the Susquehanna SPCA was able to take possession of a small farm to assist when they have to rescue a number of larger farm animals, Director Stacie Haynes told WCDO news about the need for this space for their operation:

Governor Kathy Hochul and labor leaders announced the maximum weekly unemployment insurance benefit increase for unemployed workers across the state. As part of the current State Budget, the State invested nearly $7 billion to pay off the federal UI Trust Fund loan, and bring the fund to solvency and increase the maximum weekly benefit from $504 to $869. The increase in UI benefits comes at the same time as the federal shutdown impacts about 115,000 federal employees in the state

The FBI arrested 59 year old Peter Bardunias of Clifton Park, for attempting to entice a minor to engage in prohibited sexual activity. The complaint alleges that over the past 2 weeks, Bardunias, who is a Senior Vice President with the Capital Region Chamber of Commerce, sent messages to an individual he believed to be a 15 year-old girl during which he discussed violent and sadistic sexual activity, however the individual was an undercover law enforcement official. Bardunias traveled to meet the would-be minor and was taken into custody. A federal search warrant executed at Bardunias’ residence found sex toys, restraints and a knife, he was ordered held in by a Federal Court judge Tuesday pending a detention hearing set for this Friday.

24 year old Deanna Eignor of Hobart pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court to Criminal Possession of a Firearm, back on January 12th, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the Buena Vista in Delhi for a suspicious person & drug complaint involving 2 vehicles. Eignor was observed getting out of a vehicle with a backpack that contained a firearm. Co-defendant Kenneth Dillmann, previously pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 3½ to 7 years in state prison, Eignor is expected to be sentenced to 1 year in jail for this conviction at a later date.

The Unadilla Fire Department was alerted to a possible structure fire in the town of Unadilla on State Route 7 near the State Police Barracks, around 12:00 AM earlier today, Unadilla Firefighters were able to make an aggressive push into the residence and contain the fire to the room of origin. Crews were back and in service by 4:45am, Unadilla was assisted by Sidney Fire Department & EMS, and the Wells Bridge, Franklin, Otego & Sidney Center Fire Departments.

38 year old Taylor Church of Bainbridge appeared in Delaware County Court and pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, On January 3rd, State Police conducted a traffic stop on Church’s vehicle, the license plates did not belong on the vehicle, a search uncovered heroin, cocaine a scale & ammunition, Church faces sentencing on October 28th.

25 year old Jacob Brown of Binghamton, pleaded guilty in Broome County Court to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, in exchange for a sentence of 8 years in State Prison, followed by 3 years of post-release supervision. On March 26th, Officers conducted a traffic stop on Bunn Hill Road in the Town of Vestal, During the course of the stop and subsequent investigation with assistance from K9 Coco, officers discovered a quarter pound of methamphetamine concealed beneath a child’s car seat, 3 children were in the vehicle at the time of the stop. Brown admitted to possessing the methamphetamine with intent to sell, officers also seized $1,242 from suspected drug sales, Sentencing is scheduled for January 15th in Broome County Court.

A Chenango County Grand Jury Indicted Zackery England for criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell (fentanyl), possession of methamphetamine, and criminal possession of a forged instrument. Prosecutors said England also attempted to discard fentanyl by throwing it into bushes during a July 23 incident in Norwich. England will appear in Chenango County Court for arraignment shortly.

On August 19th, Delaware County Deputies were dispatched to a 2-car accident on State Highway 28 in the Town of Middletown, Deputies concluded that 1 of the drivers, 58 year old Jane Rudy of Pine Hill was intoxicated, at the completion of the toxicology results, Deputies arrested Rudy for DWI, Aggravated DWI with a BAC of more than .18%, Failure to Keep Right, among other charges, Rudy was released on appearance tickets for Town of Middletown Court.

A Chenango County grand jury has handed up multiple felony indictments including drug possession and burglary. Valerie Anstey was indicted on 2 counts of 2nd degree burglary and 1 count of falsely reporting an incident, for allegedly entering a Greene residence on August 24th & 25th and filed a false trespass complaint with law enforcement. A Chenango County Grand Jury also indicted Loren Wildenstein Jr. for 3rd degree burglary and petty larceny, for allegedly entering a New Berlin Property on July 8 and for stealing property. The defendants are expected to appear in Chenango County Court for arraignments in the near future.

State Police responded Thursday morning to a motor vehicle crash on State Route 20 in Duanesburg. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2007 BMW driven by an unidentified 17 year old failed to make a complete stop as it turned left onto Route 20 & collided with a minivan driven by 63 year old Barbara Bryant of Schenevus, who was taken to an area hospital & succumbed to injuries sustained in the accident. The driver and 2 passengers in the BMW, and a passenger in the minivan, 36 year old Robert Gaudino of Burlington Flats, were taken to Albany Medical Center. The driver of the BMW, was issued a traffic citation for failing to stop at a stop sign. The investigation remains ongoing.

Former corrections officer David Ferrone pleaded guilty to tampering with physical evidence and will receive a 3-year conditional discharge when sentenced in December. Ferrone is the 5th officers to plead guilty in connection with the Messiah Nantwi death at Mid State Correctional facility in March.

The Matthews Auto Group will hold their 7th Annual Matthews Walk-A-Thon to benefit 13 kid’s charities in New York & Pennsylvania this Saturday, Matthews Spokesperson Kathy Breno told WCDO about the event in Norwich Saturday:

Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith and Assistant DA Rachael Collins plan a countywide school outreach on sexual abuse with separate sessions for girls, boys, and parents; a team that includes Child Protective Services & the Department of Social Services, Safe Against Violence, and local law enforcement; Assistant DA Rachael Collins told WCDO News of the plans:

State Police are warning area residents following a string of vehicle “smash and grabs” in the region. These crimes involve a suspect breaking windows and quickly stealing valuables from parked cars. Police are reminding residents to remove all valuables from your car, especially electronics, wallets and bags, either take the belongings with you or lock them in the trunk or locked compartment so they are not visible, if possible, park in a well-lit area & report any suspicious behavior or unfamiliar individuals in the area and your neighborhood. State Police are investigating a series of such incidents in recent days in the Dryden and Lansing areas, more information is available at (607) 561-7400.

Area Lawmakers are urging residents to attend meetings on October 7th & 8th by the Public Service Commission, regarding requested rate increases by NYSEG. The Commission is tasked with deciding on Utility Company rate increase requests, the hearings will be at at 1:00 and 6:00 PM at Binghamton City Hall & public comments will be taken. Interested individuals can also submit written comments or use the toll-free 1-800-335-2120 Opinion Line to voice their views on the proposed rate and practice changes. In July, NYSEG filed its “Powering New York” plan regarding replacing the state’s aging power grid, in which they claim that the rate increases are needed in order to make upgrades.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 29 year old Toren Gray of Laurens, for 16 counts of 1st degree Obscenity, 91 counts of Possessing an Obscene Sexual Performance by a Child, 89 counts of Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child, following an investigation from a Cyber Tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Investigators learned that child sexual abuse material was disseminated from a local social media account, they obtained search warrants for Gray’s accounts and located over 300 images. Sheriff’s Office investigators and the New York State Police Computer Crimes Unit, and Homeland Security Investigations agents executed a search warrant at Gray’s residence, he was taken in to custody, processed and was held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility for Arraignment. The investigation is on-going and additional charges are pending.

Delaware County District Attorney’s office announced that 69 year old Sidney Wallace of Roxbury, pleaded guilty to 2 counts of Sexual Abuse in Delaware County Court. Wallace had previously been entrusted as a foster parent, he admitted that during the winter of 2023-24 he had inappropriate sexual contact with a child under the age of 13, and in 2023 he had inappropriate sexual contact with a different child under the age of 14. Wallace faces sentencing on November 18th.
