Overdose deaths related to heroin and prescription opioid abuse reached record highs in New York State in 2014, according to a report issued today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. DiNapoli’s report noted heroin overdose deaths reached a record high of 825 in 2014, a jump of 159 deaths, or 24% over 2013, and is nearly 25 times the number recorded in New York 10 years earlier. Only Massachusetts had more heroin overdose deaths, & only Connecticut had more prescription opioid deaths than New York.

Attorney general Eric Schneiderman is asking Charter Communications to fix the service problems of the state’s Time Warner Cable subscribers following their recent acquisition.   Schneiderman reported that his office’s investigation has shown Time Warner’s actual internet speeds can be lower than advertised and that they failed to keep up with customer demand, leading to congestion and lost data. Officials with Charter stated that they have made significant investments in its infrastructure already and will continue to do so.

State Police arrested 53-year-old Deborah Perkins of Oneonta, for operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs and unlawful possession of marihuana. The arrest occurred after a trooper responded to a report of a motor vehicle driving off the roadway on State Route 28 in the Town of Otsego.   Perkins is accused of driving while impaired by drugs when she crashed; Perkins faces court action on June 16th.

The 10 day Greater Chenango Cares IRT event will be held on 10 days in July In Norwich again this year, with a variety of medical, dental, optometry and veterinary services. Volunteers are needed to sign up & assist with the event, according to Elizabeth Monaco of the Chenango United Way:

Governor Cuomo announced $10 million has been awarded for airport capital project improvements across the State. This funding from the Governor’s Aviation Capital Grant Program will support safety, infrastructure, and economic development projects across the State. The Sidney Municipal Airport, will receive $675,000 for the Construction of a New Conventional Hangar

The Ottawa Senators announced today that Kurt Kleinendorst has been returned as head coach of the Binghamton Senators. Kleinendorst returns to Binghamton where he delivered the franchise’s only Calder Cup championship in 2011. In two years with the B-Sens, Kleinendorst posted a 71-70-8-7 regular season record and went 16-7 during the championship 2011 post-season. Assistant coach Steve Stirling has also agreed to return to the B-Sens coaching staff.
