Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced a settlement with Casella Waste Systems resolving concerns that Casella’s restrictive contracting practices, market dominance and pattern of acquisitions of smaller competitors, unlawfully restrained competition in the Southern Tier. The settlement requires Casella to change its contracts to reduce the legal and financial obstacles faced by customers that wish to switch to competing providers, they, agreed not to enroll customers in contracts with an initial term of more than 2 years & they agreed to make a monetary payment to New York State in the amount of $100,000.

Governor Cuomo announced that the new Cigarette Strike Force targeting illegal tobacco trafficking and sales has already seized nearly $1.7 million in cash and contraband that includes 2.7 million cigarettes and cigars in its first 6 months.  Cigarette and tobacco-related seizures by the Strike Force within the State Department of Taxation and Finance’s Criminal Investigations Division, have yielded $1.68 million in contraband and cash, including:  12,236 cartons of untaxed cigarettes, 254,873 cigars, 2,061 pounds of loose tobacco & 24,773 counterfeit cigarette tax stamps.

The Chenango county sheriff’s department arrested 23-year-old James Marshall of Guilford on a charge of 4th degree Grand Larceny.  Deputies charged Marshall following an investigation of stolen ATM card; he is accused of using the card & taking over $1,000 from the victim.  Marshall was processed and released on an appearance ticket for a later date in the Town of Guilford court.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 42-year-old Jennifer Woloszyn of Port Crane for Driving While intoxicated.  Woloszyn is accused of traveling at a speed in excess of 55 Miles an hour in the Town of Oxford, the investigation revealed her vehicle was not insured  & she was operating the vehicle while intoxicated.  She was issued Tickets and will appear in the Oxford Town Court at a later date.

New York state is in a stronger financial position, reflecting better budgeting and financial practices and an improved economy, according to a report on the 2014-15 state Financial Plan by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli.   DiNapoli estimates that projected out-year gaps for the fiscal years ending in 2016 through 2018 average $2.5 billion annually, or 3.7 percent of average projected General Fund revenues, much lower than the levels of five and ten years ago. New York state ended fiscal year 2013-14 with General Fund reserves at $2.2 billion, the highest level since the end of 2008.  A copy of the report can be accessed at osc.state.ny.us.
