The Broome County Sheriff’s Office released the identity of the victim of the fatal motorcycle accident that took place in the Town of Maine last Thursday night. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol responded to a report single-motorcycle crash on East Maine Road, patrols located the operator lying a significant distance from the motorcycle and immediately began providing life-saving measures. 37 year old Jared Warner of Nineveh, was declared deceased at the scene, investigators determined that the Warner was traveling at a high rate of speed and lost control of the motorcycle, leading to the accident.

45 year old Rondell Wright of Binghamton was sentenced today to 6 years in State Prison followed by 5 years post-release supervision after being found guilty of Criminal Possession of a Weapon by a Broome County Jury in May in Broome County Court. On April 27, 2023, Wright was discovered to have a loaded and operable .380 caliber handgun in the City of Binghamton, the Broome County Special Investigations Unit assisted by the Binghamton Police Community Response Team discovered the handgun on Wright after a traffic stop of a vehicle with stolen license plates.

A Broome County Jury found 50 year old Damian High of Endicott, guilty of multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, and 1 count of Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, he faces up to 24 years in State Prison followed by 6 years of post-release supervision. On April 7, 2023, members of the Broome County Special Investigations Unit executed a search warrant in Endicott, where High possessed cocaine and a digital scale, in February, Endicott Police found High sleeping under a bridge, he was detained him under a Mental Hygiene Law, Police uncovered 19 baggies of cocaine. High is scheduled to be sentenced in Broome County Court on December 16.

On September 20, 2024, the Troop “C” Traffic Incident Management unit conducted an Operation Had Hat enforcement on Interstate 81 in the town of Kirkwood. During the detail, a Trooper is dressed as a construction worker and embeds himself in an active work zone. The Trooper observes violations and calls ahead to Troopers waiting just outside the work zone. In just over four hours, 44 tickets were issued 13 for Speeding, 13 for using a cellphone, One person was observed and ticketed for traveling 82 mph in the 55 mph active work zone.

Upstate Companies will be installing drainage structures and piping on both the north and south sides of Market Street in Oneonta this week, from Main Street to Chestnut Street. Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 43 year old Thomas Toomer of Oxford for multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, 1 count of Aggravated Criminal Possession of a Weapon, 1 count of Criminal Contempt. Members of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office responded to Toomer’s residence to serve an eviction notice, Toomer and an additional occupant of the residence were removed, the other occupant had an order of protection against Toomer. Toomer was then taken into custody without incident. Several firearms, ammunition, and high-capacity magazines were located in the residence. Toomer had 3 previous Felony convictions & was not allowed to have firearms, he was arraigned & was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail pending additional court action in Chenango County Court.

On September 18th, 2024 the Sidney Police Department began an investigation into a social media post that made a threat to several specific students of the Sidney School District. The same threat was also directed to several specific students of the Walton School District. Sidney Police Department has charged a 14 year old female with one count of Making a terroristic threat and four counts of Aggravated harassment, Due to the subject’s age she was issued a juvenile appearance ticket to appear at the Delaware County Probation Department and released.

Scammers obtain emails and other personal information purchased illegally on the dark web to contact victims, & claim to possess images of the victim viewing pornographic material and threatens to disclose this content to everyone in their contact list unless they pay in Bitcoin, however, the scammer does not have access to the victim’s device or personal information. Emergency crews responded to an accident on I-88 yesterday afternoon at about 1:00 PM, between Oneonta and Otego. A tractor trailer went off of the road & tipped over onto its side, the driver was not injured.

A social Media Threat against the Sidney & Walton Central School District was posted on Instagram and Facebook, Sidney Superintendent Eben Bullock told WCDO News that 4 were quickly identified, placed into a safe space & their parents were contacted, they also coordinated with the Sidney Police Department. Sidney Police stated that there was no credible information or evidence to support the threat being real & they remained at the school until dismissal, they are back at the Sidney District again today. Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 29 year old Antonio Almovdovar of Oneonta on multiple charges for Assaulting and throwing feces on Correction Officers. Almovdovar was charged with Assault, Aggravated Harassment of an Employee by an Inmate, on September 17th Almovdovar ignored lawful commands by corrections officers to cease his actions, he became combative and during a struggle, a corrections officer sustained an injury that required medical treatment at Bassett Hospital, the following morning, he began to again become disorderly and proceeded to throw bodily fluids on to another corrections officer, After consulting with the Otsego County District Attorney’s Office, a bail recommendation of $10,000 cash, $10,000 credit card and $100,000 surety bond was requested.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced early successes in the seizure of illegal guns under the anti-gun trafficking statute in the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, Gillibrand commented earlier today:

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a 2 vehicle accident Monday in Cherry Valley on Otsego County Route 50. The preliminary investigation revealed that a pickup truck with a lone occupant was traveling North on County Route 50 when it crossed the center line & struck a southbound SUV with two occupants, the SUV left the roadway, the pickup truck overturned and caught fire, the pick up truck’s driver escaped & was airlifted to Albany Medical, The SUV driver was airlifted to Syracuse Medical Center, the SUV passenger was transported to Bassett Medical Center. The Investigation is ongoing, charges are pending.

30 Year old Giovanni Foster of Johnson City, pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in Broome County Court. On July 11, the Broome County Special Investigations Unit executed a narcotics search warrant at Foster’s Apartment, they seized methamphetamine, cocaine, fentanyl, and a digital scale. Foster admitted to possession with the intent to sell & will receive 5 years in State Prison followed by 3 years post-release supervision when sentenced on December 12.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office announced that a fugitive wanted for murder in Georgia was arrested Monday by their Warrants Division. Last week, the Sheriff’s Office received information that 21 year old Dawensley Astrel of Binghamton had an active arrest warrant out of the state of Georgia for Murder, he was enrolled as a student at Broome Community College. The Sheriff’s Office coordinated with SUNY Broome Campus Safety to take Astrel into custody without incident, he will be extradited back to Georgia to face murder charges.

Walton Fire Department responded Monday night at about 11:15pm to a reported structure fire at 30 Union Street in the village. All occupants were out of the structure when Firefighters arrived, they were able to remove pets from the residence. Walton Fire Department was assisted by Trout Creek, Delhi, Franklin Fire Department. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Local sales tax collections in New York state increased by 3.8% in August compared to the same month in 2023, after stagnant figures in July, according to data released today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. County and city collections in the rest of the state totaled $945 million, an increase of 3.5%. 45 of 57 counties experienced year-over-year increases.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 43 year old Jonathan Hynes of Stamford on an Arrest Warrant for 2nd Degree Assault following an investigation by the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office for an incident that occurred in Worcester. On September 5th, Otsego County Sheriff’s Deputies contacted and requested assistance from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office in locating a vehicle and driver which were involved in a hit and run motor vehicle accident and an assault, Delaware County Deputies were able to locate the vehicle and Hynes, he was arrested & was turned over to the Otsego County Sheriff”s Office.

State Police were dispatched Thursday night to a report of gunshots at Lantern Hill Mobile Home Park in Oneonta. An investigation revealed that a 40-year-old male of Oneonta, NY sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound after a dispute involving several individuals, he was taken to A.O. Fox Hospital by a private vehicle and was later transported to Bassett Hospital for further care. The vehicle carrying the victim was hit by gunfire during the incident. 34 year old Ishmael Seabrook of Oneonta was charged with 2 counts of Attempted Murder, Criminal Use of a Firearm, Criminal Possession of a Weapon & Reckless Endangerment, State Police were assisted by the Oneonta City Police Department, Seabrook was arraigned at the Otsego County Jail and was remanded without bail.

Bainbridge Guilford Superintendent Tim Ryan released a statement about an incident Friday evening as B-G was hosting a football game with Walton. During the game administration was notified that a student was overheard saying he had a gun at the game, law enforcement was notified, the student was located and was taken away from the game & Staff remained with the student until law enforcement arrived and took over the situation. Ryan stated that there was no fight at the game and there was no gun, there was no need to suspend or cancel the game or send everyone home. Law enforcement continued to meet with the student and his family, they left the premises and law enforcement officers remained at the game until the conclusion.

Broome County Sheriff Road Patrol deputies responded to a motor vehicle accident involving 2 vehicles Early Sunday morning on Morgan Road in the Town of Binghamton. Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar identified the deceased as 29 year old Charles Burrell of Conklin, who was ejected from 1 of the vehicles, he said that the operators of the 2 vehicles were engaged in a continuing dispute over women & narcotics, they engaged in a road rage incident that ended with the fatality. 20 year old Cody Diffendorf of Kirkwood & 26 year old James MacDowall of Binghamton were each charged with 2nd degree manslaughter, both are in the custody of the Broome County Correctional facility pending future court action.

State Police issued a total of 10,240 tickets statewide during the Labor Day weekend enforcement campaign, which ran from Friday, August 30th to Labor Day, September 2nd. State Police utilized sobriety checkpoints, additional DWI patrols, and ticketed impaired and distracted drivers, they arrested 232 people for DWI. In Troop C, they had 12 DWI arrests, & they issued 405 tickets for speeding out of a total of 832 tickets.

State Police in Troop “C” will be hosting 2 child car seat checks this weekend. Troopers will be participating in the “Touch A Truck” events Saturday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Broome County Fairgrounds in Whitney Point, & on Sunday in Broome County from 10:00am – 1:00pm at the ‘Paws for a Cause’ dog walk at Otsiningo Park. Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 23 year old Alyssa Jones of Bainbridge for Promoting Prison Contraband. Deputies received information that Jones entered the Correctional Facility for Central Arraignment on an unrelated arrest, a search revealed that Jones was in possession of a knife, she was arraigned at the Delaware County Central Arraignment Court & was released on her own recognizance and is scheduled to appear at Delhi Town Court at a later date to answer the charge.

The Norwich Police Department investigated a stabbing on Rexford Street in the City of Norwich Wednesday at about 5:30 PM. Police arrested 40 year old Jason Chase of Marathon for 2nd degree Assault & Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Norwich Police Department located the victim who had stab wounds to his neck and forearm, the victim was taken to UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital and is in stable condition, Officers located and arrested Chase at Gold Street in Norwich, the stated that during an altercation, Chase allegedly produced a “brass knuckle knife,” and stabbed the victim several times, he was arraigned & was being held without bail, pending further hearings.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that law enforcement agencies throughout the State issued 20,714 tickets for various vehicle and traffic law violations, including 4,374 tickets for speeding and 966 tickets for drug or alcohol impaired driving during a statewide mobilization. The Labor Day weekend enforcement campaign ran from August 30 through September 2nd.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is calling for the passage of legislation that would provide free breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a snack to all schoolchildren regardless of income:

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 36 year old Ronnie Hernandez on a Fugitive from Justice complaint. The Delaware County Criminal Investigation Division received information that Hernandez was an Inmate at the Delaware County Correctional Facility & he had an active warrant from the Pennsylvania for stealing a motor vehicle, valued at $30,000. Fernandez was arrested and arraigned on the Fugitive from Justice Complaint at the Delaware County Central Arraignment Court and remanded back to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending extradition to the State of Pennsylvania.

23 year old Elijah Gibson of Endicott, was sentenced today in Broome County Court to 5 years in State Prison, followed by 3 years of post-release supervision for Criminal Possession of a Weapon. On December 30, 2023, in the Village of Endicott, Gibson possessed a loaded and operable 9mm firearm, leading to his arrested & conviction.

Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith announced that the Delaware County Grand Jury returned an 8-count indictment against 32 year old Drew Garnier of Masonville for the murder of his wife Samantha, and the attempted murder of their 2 children. Garnier was indicted for 2nd Degree Murder, Attempted Murder, Criminal use of a firearm, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, for possessing assault weapons, he pleaded not guilty to each charge & was remanded to the custody of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office without bail.

State Police arrested 55-year-old Daniel Erickson of Greene, for 2nd degree Rape with a victim under the age of 15, and endangering the welfare of a child, in Bath New York earlier this year. Erickson previously pleaded guilty in April to luring a 16-year-old child in Broome County after having multiple sexually charged texts, at the time he was the Johnson City Middle School Principal.

The Chenango County Historical Society and the Chenango County Historian’s Office will collaborate on “An America 250 Conversation.” These two organizations are seeking input from the people of Chenango County on how local communities will participate in the national commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
