A.M. NEWS MONDAY 4-29-13

The Afton and Bainbridge Fire Departments were called to a house fire at 103 Warren Lane in the Town of Afton at around 11:30 Saturday Night.  Fire personnel found the mobile home engulfed, they were able to control and extinguish the fire in approximately 30 to 45 minutes. 3 people were found deceased in the residence, they have been identified as 11 year old Craig Gohl, 45 year old Nathan Herbert and 54 year old Anna Ebert, Autopsies determined the cause of death to be asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning. The fire started due to smoking materials near a couch. Investigation determined there were no working smoke alarms in the residence, the investigation which is ongoing.

A dedication ceremony was held Friday for the new cancer clinic at Tri-Town Regional Hospital, in honor of the late Bruce Wilhelm.  Bassett Hospital President & CEO Doctor Bill Streck comments:

Wilhelm was a Sidney native who was the first CEO of Tri Town Regional Hospital; he died last year after a lengthy battle with cancer.

P.M. NEWS FRIDAY 4-26-13

State Police in Oneonta responded to a reported home invasion robbery at 1829 Stone Fort Road in the Town of Kortright, Thursday. Investigators discovered that a masked male subject forced his way into the residence at around 2:00 AM and assaulted the 81 year old sleeping occupants by striking them with a long gun before leaving on foot, with an undetermined amount of cash. State Police are requesting anyone with information to contact the Oneonta BCI unit at 432-3211.

Downtown Oneonta will be packed Saturday for The 8th annual OH-Fest. The festival is co-sponsored by Hartwick College & the State University of Oneonta; Main Street will be closed from 10:00 AM To 6:00 PM, between Chestnut Street and Ford Avenue, with a carnival scheduled between 1:00 and 5:00 PM. 4 bands will perform in a free concert in Neahwa Park between 6:00 and 10:00 PM.

State Troopers from Sidney arrested 27 year old Gene Casey of Vernon, Vermont and 27 year old Amanda Grondin of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts for 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Criminal Possession of Marihuana. Casey was additionally charged with Speeding and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. The arrests resulted from a traffic stop on I-88 in the Town of Bainbridge. Both subjects were issued Appearance Tickets returnable to the Town of Bainbridge Court on April 29th.

The Otsego county conservation association will hold their annual “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” garage sale on Saturday and Sunday. The event will be held at the farmers market building on Main Street in Cooperstown, the money raised will be used for conservation society programs throughout the year.

The Chenango county sheriffs department arrested three defendants from Greene for Petty Larceny. Deputies responded to the Norwich Wal-Mart after an employee filed a complaint, charged were 41 year old Joanne Cutler, 18 year old Elizabeth Cutler & 20 year old Anthony Ruquet of Greene, All 3 were processed and released on appearance tickets to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.

Sidney village officials announced that crews would pick up brush, leaves; grass clippings weed stalks and hedge trimmings starting Monday morning. Those items must be placed at the curb by 7:00 AM for pickup.

State Troopers in Deposit arrested 19 year old Giovanni Zito of Deposit, as an Illegal Alien. The arrest was the result of an investigation into an unrelated matter, Zito was delivered to Immigration Naturalization Service Agents and remanded to their custody.

The American cancer society is hosting their annual “Paint The Town Purple day” today throughout the Tri-Town Area.  Cancer society spokesperson Helen Gregory explains:

The annual tri-town relay for life will be held May 3rd & 4th at General Clinton Park in Bainbridge, Gregory said that last year’s efforts raised about $100,000 dollars for the cancer society’s local efforts.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 35-year-old Kevin Urgo of McDonough for Felony Driving While Intoxicated, Felony Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle.   Urgo was found by Sheriff’s Deputies stopped in the middle of a roadway, he was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $1000 cash bail.  Urgo is to appear in the Town of Preston Court on a later date.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 27 year old Matthew Towndrow of Preston on an active arrest warrant issued of the Town of North Norwich Court for resisting arrest on April 16th.  Towndrow was arraigned in the Town of North Norwich Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $5000 bail and is scheduled re-appear in the Town of North Norwich Court at a later date.

Tomorrow from 10:00am to 2:00pm, the Norwich Police Department will be accepting unwanted, unused or outdated prescription medications at the rear of the Police Station located at 18 East Main Street, as part of the national “Take Back” initiative.   The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office will also participate with collections at the Sheriff’s Office Sub-Station at the Coventry Town Hall on State Route 235, and at the North Norwich fire Station on State Route 12, from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM Saturday.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 45-year-old Robert Bowers of Fenton following an investigation into a fight in the Town of Fenton.  Deputies reported that after the fight was broken up, Bowers returned to his trailer, grabbed a shotgun. & fired one round through his ceiling.  Bowers was charged with 1-Count of  2nd degree Reckless Endangerment & 1 Count of Illegal Discharge of a Firearm, he was processed at the Broome County Sheriffs Office and released on two appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Fenton Court at a later date.

State troopers from Sidney  arrested 43-year-old Crezette Harris-Shoulders of Mansfield, Ohio for Improper Log Book. The arrest was the result of a report of a tractor-trailer blocking State Route 206 in Bainbridge, the Investigation revealed the tractor trailer had run out of fuel, State Police assisted with traffic control until the vehicle could be refueled,  Harris-Shoulders was issued a Ticket returnable to the Town of Bainbridge Court on May 13th.

The city of Oneonta will hold their annual Arbor Day ceremony tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM, in the lower level of Wilber Park.  A tree will be planted in memory of Frank  Stevens, who served  on the city’s environmental board.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested two persons after finding them trespassing on the property of the Greater Binghamton Health Center in the City of Binghamton. Charged were 34-year-old Yancey Powell of Tampa Florida and 30-Year-old Robert Felton of Johnson city, they are accused of attempting to steal a metal fence in order to sell it for scrap.  Powell & Felton were each charged with trespassing, larceny and conspiracy, they were processed and released on appearance returnable to the City of Binghamton court at a later date.

29-year-old Kevin Buie of Endicott pleaded guilty to charges of vehicular manslaughter and 2nd degree assault, in connection with a crash that left killed 35-year-old Jonathan Pratt and seriously injured 35-year-old Joseph Dirig in downtown Binghamton last September.  Buie is being held in the Broome County Jail pending sentencing on June 19th.

Chenango county sheriff’s deputies arrested 2 Norwich area youths for 2nd degree Burglary, 5th degree Conspiracy & Criminal Mischief.  The arrests followed an investigation into a residential burglary in the Town of Norwich in which the subjects allegedly forced their way into the victim’s residence and stole items inside.  Both subjects were issued Juvenile Appearance Tickets and will appear in Chenango County Probation at a later date. Both subjects were turned over to the custody of their parents.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 34 year old Neil Freidel of Norwich for Unlawful Possession of Marihuana.  The arrest followed an investigation of a 1 car motor vehicle accident on Reservoir Hill Road in the Town of Plymouth.  Friedel was released on an appearance ticket for a later court date. The accident is still under investigation.

P.M. NEWS WEDNESDAY 4-24-13

State Police Reported that 71-year-old Barbara Cadwell died in the blaze at 311 Tunnel Road in the town of Fenton Tuesday morning.  Firefighters responded to the blaze at around 4:29 AM to find the home engulfed in flames, the cause of Cadwell’s death has been ruled as asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning, The manner of death was determined to be accidental.  The Investigation revealed the fire originated from a wood stove.  Firefighters from Sanitaria Springs, Port Crane and Harpursville fought Tuesday’s fire, no injuries were reported.

The State Labor Department released preliminary local area unemployment rates for March. The state’s unemployment rate was at 8.1% for March, locally Chenango County improved 6/10ths to 8.6%, Delaware County’s rate dropped 1% to 9.4% and Otsego County’s rate also dropped 1% to 8.2%.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office will again be partnering with the U.S. DEA on Saturday in the National “Take Back” Initiative.  The purpose of the initiative is to help prevent prescription drug diversion, & it prevents unused drugs from entering the ground water and municipal water supplies.  The Sheriff’s Office will be staffing collections at the Sheriff’s Office Sub-Station at the Coventry Town Hall on State Route 235.  The Sheriff’s Office will also be collecting unused medications at the North Norwich fire Station on State Route 12.  The collection sites are open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Congressman Chris Gibson announced the formation of a Watershed Advisory Group to l work on issues related to the New York City Watershed. The Chenango county sheriffs department arrested 26-year-old Amber Towndrow of Oxford for  2nd degree Harassment and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.  Deputies reported that while at Towndrow’s residence arresting another person on an active arrest warrant, Amber Towndrow shoved a Deputy  while holding a 1 year old child & used profane language on several occasions during this incident in front of the child.  Towndrow was arraigned in the Village of Oxford Court and remanded to the custody of the Sheriff on $5,000 Cash bail & will reappear in the Village of Oxford Court at a later date.

Officials with the NY Alert system announced that individuals in numerous states are receiving solicitation phone calls with a caller ID of NY-Alert  from the phone number 518- 292-6634.  officials said that these calls are not originating from NY-Alert & that   Caller ID spoofing is being used to display NY-Alert on the telephone display.  Officials said that hang up & never give any personal information to those callers.

New York State Safe Boating week is May 18th through the 24th, the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting a Boater Safety Course and “Ready, Set, Wear it” event. The “Ready, Set, Wear It” is a program set to encourage all boaters to wear life jackets while boating. Participants must register by contacting the Sheriff’s Office at 337-1920.   Registration is limited to the first 20, the course will be held at the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on May 18th from 8:00am-4:00pm.

State police announced that one woman was killed in a fire in Port Crane.   State Police,  the Broome County Fire Investigation Team, the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, and the Broome County Coroner’s Office are investigating a fatal structure fire occurring Tuesday morning at 311 Tunnel Road in the Town of Fenton.  Fire Departments from Sanitaria Springs, Port Crane, and Harpursville responded to the blaze at 4:29 AM, they located a deceased female inside, the   Identification is undetermined, The investigation is continuing.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced a multi-count indictment resulting in the arrest of11 Syracuse-area residents on drug trafficking charges Tuesday. The 69 count indictment includes counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the First, Second and Third Degree, as well as Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the First, Second & Third Degree, as well as Conspiracy in the Second Degree.  The drug network transported cocaine from Puerto Rico, Arizona and New York City for distribution in Syracuse and Watertown.  The Attorney General office’s seized in excess of six kilograms of cocaine and approximately six ounces of heroin.

Oneonta Police arrested 24-year-old Joshua West of Oneonta and 21-year-old Kyle Macken of Oneonta on charges of 1st degree robbery and 2nd degree assault.  The 2 were charged in connection with a robbery at knifepoint, the victim suffered a broken nose in the attack.  West and Macken face court action on the charges shortly, the unidentified victim was treated at Fox Hospital.

Fire fighters responded to a blaze at 311 Tunnel Road in Port Crane early this morning.  The house was completely destroyed the structure was fully involved when firefighters arrived at around 4:20AM.  Fire fighters from Port Crane, Harpursville and Sanitaria Springs responded, fire investigators are investigating the cause of that fire this afternoon.

The Broome County Special Investigation Unit Task Force and the New York State Liquor Authority checked several Broome County area establishments last weekend for violations of the underage sale and consumption of alcohol laws.  Violations were found at Mary’s Bar in the Town of Chenango & the Sports Bar in Binghamton.

A New survey released today by The Partnership at Drugfree.org and the MetLife Foundation confirmed that one in four teens has misused or abused a prescription drug at least once in their lifetime, which is a 33% increase in the past five years. Dave Ramsey of the Alcohol & Drug Abuse Council suggested ways to get rid of old prescriptions that are no longer in use:

NBT Bancorp reported core net income for the 1st quarter of  2013 was $14.3 million, up 8.5% from the same period in 2012.  Reported results from the first quarter of 2013 include the impact of the acquisition of Alliance Financial Corporation, including approximately $10.7 million in merger related expenses. Net interest income was up 5.6% as compared to the first quarter of 2012,  Noninterest income was up 9.4% as compared to the first quarter of 2012, insurance and financial services revenue was up 12.0% & Trust revenue was up 36.8%.
