The American Red Cross has opened a shelter today in Moore Oklahoma & they are looking to open more shelters, following the recent storms & tornadoes that destroyed homes, businesses & schools.  The Red Cross is accepting donations for the affected Oklahoma residents, People who wish to make a donation to support the Red Cross response can visit redcross.org, call 1-800-REDCROSS or text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

The State Labor Department reported that unemployment fell to 7.3% in April.  Locally, Chenango County’s rate dropped 1.1% to 7.6% in April, Delaware County dropped 1.2% to 8.2% and Otsego County’s rate dropped 1.1% to 7.1%.  The entire southern tier region dropped 4/10th to 7.8%.

A recent survey of paddlers, who participate in the General Clinton canoe regatta, showed that a high percentage would approve of moving the 70-mile races to Sunday, and drop all races on Memorial Day Monday.  Current general Clinton regatta chairman John Harmon comments:

State Police at Norwich arrested James Fox, Jr. of Greene for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle and on an active warrant from Binghamton for Criminal Contempt.   The arrest resulted from a traffic stop on State Route 12 in Greene, Fox was issued tickets, arraigned in the Town of Greene Court and was then turned over to the City of Binghamton Police Department.

Officials at the State department of Motor Vehicles report that the crackdown on repeat drunk drivers since the implementation of new rules last September, has removed 3,164 dangerous motorists being kept of the state’s highways.  The DMV reviewed 3,891 applications for relicensing from individuals with more than 2 alcohol or drug-related driving offenses on their record, 1,658 were permanently denied relicensing and about 1,500 others were denied relicensing for another 5 years, another 699 drivers were relicensed but required to use an ignition interlock.

State Troopers in Binghamton arrested 44-year-old Robert Snedeker of West Windsor for Felony DWI. The arrest resulted from a traffic stop on I-81 in Binghamton; Snedeker was arraigned in the Town of Conklin Court and remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.

The Sidney central school district will hold their kindergarten orientation at the elementary school this evening.  The program will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 PM in the cafeteria, following the presentation, there will be a question & answer session.

Locally, Bainbridge Guilford, Charlotte Valley, Franklin, Laurens, Milford, Norwich, Oneonta, & Walton are asking residents to pass budgets With tax levy increases of more than 2% above last year.

P.M. NEWS MONDAY 5-20-13

State Police in Deposit arrested 21-year-old Onif Chamberlain of The Bronx, for Unlawful Possession of Marijuana. Also arrested was 20-year-old Gregory Ewer of The Bronx for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. The arrests resulted from a traffic stop on State Route 17 in Hancock; both subjects were issued Appearance Tickets returnable to the Village of Hancock Court on May 22nd.

State Police at Oneonta arrested 20-year-old John Rundblad Jr., of Worcester for Driving While Intoxicated with a BAC result of .13%. The arrest resulted from a traffic accident in Westford; Rundblad was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Westford Court on June 4th.

Police in Delhi & Walton are investigating alleged threats to the Delhi & Walton school districts Friday there was no actual incidents based on the Internet posted threats, both schools remained on lockdown, and police presence was beefed up at dismissal times. Franklin also went on lockdown for a short period at dismissal time, to insure the students’ safety, even though they were not mentioned specifically in the Internet threats.  The investigations are continuing.

The Women’s Fund, of the Community Foundation for South Central New York, is accepting grant proposals for amounts of $1,000 to $4,000 from qualified organizations in Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Otsego and Tioga counties. A.M. NEWS MONDAY 5-20-13

The Chenango county sheriffs department arrested 38-year-old Ganesh Remy Ramsaran of New Berlin Friday, for the murder of his wife Jennifer last December, her body was found in a wooded area 3 months later.  Ramsaran was charged with 2nd degree murder, he was arraigned in Chenango County Court and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $150,000 bail.  Ramsaran faces a felony hearing Thursday in New Berlin Town Court.

Governor Cuomo announced that today starts a 14-day statewide “Buckle Up New York” campaign to crack down on drivers and their passengers who are not wearing seat belts.  Troop C Commanding Officer Major Kevin Molinari explains:

This year’s effort runs through June 2nd, & law enforcement agencies that share state borders will team up for “Operation Border to Border” to provide increased seat belt enforcement at border sites.

The city of Oneonta public service department will be chip-sealing area streets, starting Monday morning.  All cars must be removed from affected streets by 7:00 AM Monday on Prospect, Richmond, Bronk, Cleveland, brook & pearl, on Tuesday, vehicles must be removed by 7:00 AM on Reynolds Ave, Franklin, Harmon & Morse.  More information is available at 432-2100.

P.M. NEWS FRIDAY 5-17-13

Chenango county sheriff’s department arrested Ganesh Remy Ramsaran of New Berlin, in connection with the murder of his wife Jennifer, who was reported missing December 11th of last year by her husband.  Jennifer Ramsaran was found dead in February in the Town of Pharsalia in a wooded area.  WCDO will have further details as they become available.

The State Office of Emergency Management continues to monitor effects of the earthquake that occurred this morning near Ottawa, Canada, and was felt throughout parts of New York State. There have been no reports of damage to any of the state’s critical infrastructure. No injuries were reported.

Governor Cuomo asked pro gas groups to do more to allay the fears of the public with regard to misconceptions about natural gas development. The Joint Landowners Coalition of New York will host an event regarding water & health issues & the state proposed gas-drilling regulations, at the Legislative Office Building in Albany, on Thursday, May 30th from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm.  A panel discussion with gas drilling & health experts is scheduled, followed by a question & answer period.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s department arrested 51-year-old Denise Wells of Bainbridge for Driving While Intoxicated.  Deputies responded to the report of an intoxicated woman who had driven to a Norwich business.   Wells was released on appearance tickets and is to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.

The Chenango county sheriff’s department arrested 39-year-old Cheryl Hoxie of New Berlin for 3rd degree Forgery and Petty Larceny.  Hoxie is accused of forging a signature on checks that she had stolen, and cashed them at local banks, she was released on appearance tickets and is to appear in the Town of New Berlin Court and the Town of Norwich Court at later dates.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 31-year-old Jason Ransford on a charge of 2nd degree Harassment issued by the Town of Stamford Court stemming from a domestic incident. Ransford faces court action at a later date.

On May 18, 2013, the Northeast Classic Car Museum will present its new exhibit, “Wagons & Woodies: From Depot Hack to Station Wagon.” Nearly 20 classic vehicles will be displayed and will showcase the evolution of the station wagon from the early days of travel through the iconic styles of the 50s, 60s, & 70s.  This special exhibit will run through April 2014, and The Northeast Classic Car Museum will show an original, unreleased documentary film, “Wagon masters” from May 18th through Labor Day.  More information can be found at classiccarmuseum.org or 334-2886.  Information about the Wagonmasters film can be found at wagonmastersthemovie.com.

Lawmakers continue to work in Albany, and ethics reform bills are getting priority after the recent arrests of 5 lawmakers on a variety of charges.  Assemblyman Cliff Crouch said that he wants to see the governor’s proposal to deal with the situation:

Among those waiting currently for their days in court are former democratic State senate leaders John Sampson for allegedly receiving $440,000 illegally & Malcolm Smith for allegedly violating campaign laws relating to a possible run for New York city mayor.

The General Clinton Canoe Regatta is expected to once again draw thousands of people to the region over the Memorial Day weekend again this year. One of the highlights this year will be the 2nd annual regatta Hall of Fame dinner & ceremony, Regatta chairman John Harmon comments:

State Troopers arrested 44-year-old Stephen Thill of Colchester, on an active arrest warrant for 2nd degree Aggravated Harassment from the Nassau County Police Department. The arrest resulted from another complaint, which occurred in the Town of Colchester, Thill was taken into custody and turned over to the Nassau County Police.

Oneonta Troopers arrested 30-year-old Zujeily Ganio of Mount Vision for Driving While Intoxicated with a BAC of .13%. The arrest resulted from a vehicle and traffic stop in Oneonta, she was issued tickets returnable in the Town of Oneonta Court on May 21st.

Congressman Chris Gibson announced this morning that he voted in support of the 2013 federal 5 year Farm Bill.   Provisions in the bill include a  safety net for dairy producers through a new marginal insurance framework, Promotion and improvement of local agriculture markets, risk management options that level the playing field for specialty crop producers, support for organic farmers and specialty research, The Senate Agriculture Committee passed their version of the Farm Bill Tuesday, both versions now must pass their respective houses, and head for conference committee action.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in locating 54-year-old Paul Terwilliger.  Detectives describe Terwilliger as a white male 5’6” 150 pounds with brown hair balding and blue eyes. Terwilliger was arrested on April 29th for Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child, for allegedly engaging in sexual intercourse with a child less than 11 years of age.  A missing persons report was issued for Terwilliger after he was bailed out on the criminal charges, anyone with information on Terwilliger’s whereabouts is asked to call the Broome County Sheriff’s Office Tipline at 778-1196.

Governor Cuomo announced that more than 18,000 teens would have jobs this summer through New York State’s Summer Youth Employment Program.  The State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance has distributed $25 million in funding to all 57 counties and New York City to help bring youth into the workforce. Youth interested in participating can contact their local department of social services.
