A.M. NEWS TUESDAY 5-28-13

The 51st running of the General Clinton Canoe Regatta was held this past weekend, with the 70-mile endurance races from Cooperstown to Bainbridge on Memorial Day.  Pro paddlers Andy Triebold from Michigan and Steve Lajoie of Quebec won their 6th consecutive pro race, taking the $3300 dollar prize.  It was Triebold’s 8th victory, placing him 2nd all time for Clinton wins, he told WCDO’s Craig Stevens why he likes the Clinton Race:

Triebold & Lajoie finished in 6:36:55, just 19 seconds slower that the regatta record set by Serge Corbin & Bruce Barton in 1990.

Todd & Sean Lefever of Unadilla finished in 2nd place in the men’s 50 years & younger Comp Cruising race; they told WCDO’s Craig Stevens that they raced in memory of their mother & past Regatta Chairperson Pam Lefever:

The brothers finished the 70-mile course in 7:27:59; over 1200 paddlers competed over the 4-day regatta, coming from 22 states & Canada.

Canoe racers from 22 states and Canada descended on Bainbridge to compete in the 51st general Clinton Canoe Regatta, pro paddlers Andy Triebold & Steve Lajoie won their 6th straight pro race, and came within 19 seconds of breaking the record for the fastest time.  First time Clinton participant Frederick Blaise from Quebec took 1st place in the 1-man pro race, he told WCDO’s Craig Stevens what he thought about his 1st experience at the general Clinton race:

Blaise beat Walton by just 6 seconds in a sprint for the finish line.  Over 1200 paddlers competed in the 4-day regatta.

This year, 11 people were inducted into the Regatta Hall of Fame Saturday, including long time canoeist and paddle maker Al Camp of Otego.  Camp talked about the paddling community:

Camp won the Clinton pro race in 1969 with Jim Root of Binghamton; he was also an original 700-mile club members, completed 18 regattas and designed camp Paddles and Canoes.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 39 year old Scott Gaynor of Portlandville on 2 counts of felony criminal possession of marijuana, criminal possession of a controlled substance, aggravated operation of a motor vehicle, & operating a motor vehicle without an ignition interlock device.  Deputies confiscated more than 12 pounds of marijuana from Gaynor’s truck & home, as well as $15,000 in cash, a scale, and plastic bags used for packaging and 10 hyrdrocodone tablets.  Gaynor was arraigned in the Town of Milford Court & was sent to the Otsego County Jail on $15,000 cash bail.

The Chenango county sheriff’s department arrested 39-year-old Albert Enders of Greene for 3rd degree Menacing & Aggravated Family Offense.  Enders was arrested following an investigation into a domestic dispute, where he is accused of putting a family member in fear of physical injury by physically menacing the victim.  Enders faces court action shortly.

The city of Oneonta will begin reconstruction of Spruce Street from Maple to Clinton today.  Work will include the replacement of sewer, water & storm water facilities as well as curbs, sub-base & pavements.  The work is expected to be completed by August 26th.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office Arrested 44-year-old Frank Vail and 52 year old Christina Heisler of Oxford, on charges of petty larceny & 6th degree conspiracy.  The 2 were arrested following an investigation into a larceny of a Norwich business.  The Defendants are accused of conspiring and successfully stealing merchandise from the store and returning said items to the store to receive a refund to which they were not entitled.  Both were issued appearance tickets to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.

Memorial Day Parades / Services / Activities

Memorial Day Parades / Services / Activites – 2013

Sidney – Parade to form at the Moose Club parking lot on East Main St. at 8:15AM with a brief ceremony in Prospect Hill Cemetary.  A ceremony will be held on the lawn of the Sidney Memorial Public Library.  Guest speaker with will be Sidney Mayor Andy Matviak.

Sidney Center – Parade will form at 10:30AM at the corner of routes 23 & 35.  Proceed to the former site of the Methodist Church for the service and then to the cemetary.

Masonville – Parade will begin at about 12:00pm.  Sidney High School Band to arrive about 11:45am.  Following the parade, there will be a chicken BBQ.

Guilford – Parade line up at 7:30am at the end of School St. moving out at 8:00am.  Ceremony to be held at the park on route 35.

Afton – Parade starting at 10am at the corner of Main st. and Pleasant St.  The Afton VFW Post 3529 will be holding a pancake breakfast from 7a-11a at the VFW on Main. St.

Bainbridge – There will be no parking on Main St. during the parade!  Parade will form at 10am at the Greenlawn Cemetary and start off at 10:30am.  Military services will be held at 10:15 AM.

Unadilla – Services and ceremony to start at 10:30am at the Community House, following by a parade and proceeding to Evergreen Cemetary.

Otego – Parade to form at the American Legion Field at 8am

Oxford – The wreath laying ceremony and rifle salute will be held at St. Joseph’s Cemetary.  Following at 9am, the parade will line up at the Oxford American Legion Post #376.  Following the parade and ceremony, there will be a chicken BBQ at 11am.

Gilbertsville – Parade will form in front of the former school on Grove St. at 9am

Franklin – Parade begins at 11am at the American Legion and proceeds to the cemetary.

Oneonta – Parade at 10am followed by the dedication ceremony at Neahwa Park Memorial Walkway at 11am.

Norwich – Parade followed by memorial ceremony at 10:15am in the park.

Delhi – Parade to begin at Courthouse Square and ends at the American Legion at 11am.

State police will be out in full force this Memorial Day weekend across the state, Troop C Commanding officer Major Kevin Molinari explains:

One person is killed every half hour on average nationwide due to drunk driving, state police are also looking to get 100% compliance on seat belt usage, research indicates that the chance of serious injuries or fatalities climb extremely high if seat belts are not used by occupants in a crash.

Chenango county sheriff’s deputies & the Greene Police Department arrested 23-year-old Corey Nelson of Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania.  Nelson was a Fugitive from Justice out of the State of Pennsylvania, with an arrest warrant issued by the Muhlenberg Township Police Department for Theft by Deception-False Impression.  Nelson was arraigned in Chenango County Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional facility pending extradition back to Pennsylvania.

Delaware County Deputies investigated a 2-car accident on County Route 10 in East Meredith. 32-year-old Michael Tarzia of Delhi was traveling east when he was struck by a vehicle driven by 24 year old Kayla Constable of Delhi.  Constable was charged with DWI & leaving the scene of a property damage auto accident, she was released and is ordered to appear at a later date in the Town of Meredith Court

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant in the Town of New Berlin leading to the arrest of 47-year-old Valeria Goude for Cruelty to animals.  A search warrant was executed with the assistance of Compassionate Care Veterinarians; they located dead and malnourished animals on the property.  Valeria Goude was arrested and released, the investigation is ongoing.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 43-year-old Frederick Black of Jefferson for 2 counts of 2nd degree Aggravated Harassment.    The charges stem from a domestic dispute between Black and two female victims, Black allegedly called 1 victim approximately 100 times and the other victim approximately 50 times in a span of about 12 hours.  He was arraigned in Harpersfield Town Court and released to reappear at a later date.   A temporary order of protection was issued for the victims.

Chenango county sheriff’s deputies arrested Trinity Hafner of Norwich for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance &  Criminal Possession of a Hypodermic Needle during a traffic stop on State Highway 12 in North Norwich.   Deputies found  a hypodermic needle on the floor of the vehicle and a syringe was found within the vehicle containing heroin. Hafner was released on an appearance ticket & will appear in the Town of North Norwich Court on a later date.

38 year old Ganesh Ramsaran of New Berlin was indicted Thursday by a Chenango County grand jury for 2nd degree murder, for the death of his wife Jennifer last December.  Ramsaran will be arraigned Tuesday; he was arrested Friday & was released on $300,000 bond Wednesday from the Chenango County Jail.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Investigators arrested and extradited a local fugitive from the State of Texas on an Arrest Warrant issued by Delaware County Court.  Former Delhi area resident Richard Robinson of Gastonia, North Carolina, was arrested by Delaware County Sheriff’s Investigators in Groveton, Texas and was returned to the Delaware County Correctional Facility Wednesday and is being held pending further court proceedings.  Robinson is accused of failing to appear before the Delaware County Court last December, relating to a pending felony DWI prosecution.

Tomorrow, Hartwick College will celebrate the 82nd Commencement exercises, at 11:30 AM on Elmore Field to recognize graduates’ achievements.  The Class of 2013 will convene at 5:00 today for this year’s Baccalaureate ceremony at the Foothills Performing Arts Center in Oneonta.

State Senator Jim Seward approves of the new “Tax-Free NY” initiative unveiled by Governor Cuomo Wednesday:

The Governor said that the Tax-Free NY proposal would entice companies to Upstate New York by offering new businesses the opportunity to operate tax-free while partnering with the SUNY system.

The County of Chenango IDA was notified Wednesday that the Federal Economic Development Administration has approved a $4.7 million dollar award for the Revitalization of the Chenango County Rail System.  Commerce Chenango & IDA president Steve Craig told WCDO of the potential importance of this project:

The Federal investment represents 80% of the $5.8 million cost to completely revitalize the Utica Main Rail Line through Chenango County. The federal funding leverages an award the IDA received from the state DOT for $770,422, local sources will invest a total of $408,070.  rail beds & infrastructure were damaged by 2006 floods.

Barton is 1 of 2 paddlers to win both the 2 person race, with Serge Corbin in 1990, and the one man pro race, he holds the fastest times in both categories & has raced the Clinton 28 times.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 21-year-old Kayla Ray of Masonville on 1 count of 1st degree Criminal Contempt.  Ray is accused of violating an order of protection issued out of Sidney village court she was arraigned and was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional facility on $50,000 cash bail and $50,000 bond, pending court action on June 3rd.

The Wall That Heals, is a traveling 250-foot replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, it will arrive for the start of a 4-day stay that runs from this Friday through Monday in the Village of Cooperstown.  The Wall will be set up at the Doubleday Field Parking Lot on Main Street; it will arrive this afternoon between 4:15 and 4:30, with a reception for The Wall That Heals volunteers at 5:30 PM.

The Chenango county sheriffs department arrested 50-year-old Stephen Christoffersen of Port crane for DWI.  The arrest followed a call of an erratic driver on state route 12 in the Town of Oxford.  Christoffersen was arraigned in the Town of Oxford Court after refusing to take a breath test. He is to reappear in the Town of Oxford Court at a later date.

With the increased demand by New York Yogurt manufacturers for local fresh milk, state lawmakers are working to help dairy farmers increase the size of their herd without incurring former costs associated with environmental impact studies.  Assemblyman Bill Magee explains:

The news comes as a German manufacturer is looking to locate another yogurt plants in western new York, that will also require more fresh local milk from New York dairy farmers, new York already leads the nation in yogurt production.

The Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce announced a New Memorial Day Weekend  Event in Bainbridge Saturday from 9:00 to 3:00 PM.  Chamber Vice President Lori McGraw explains:

McGraw said that there would be community wide yard sales throughout the village, Saturday in addition to all the activities at General Clinton Park during the canoe regatta.

Governor Cuomo today announced an agreement between New York State and the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe to resolve a three-year dispute over gaming issues.  Under the agreement, the State will remove the 8-county Saint Regis Mohawk exclusivity zone from the proposed casino-siting legislation, and the Tribe will pay $30 million of payments owed and 25% of future gaming revenues to the State. The agreement also initiates discussions between the State, the Tribe, and local governments to resolve unrelated land claim disputes.

State Senator Jim Seward paid tribute to Kenneth Taylor of Franklin as a 2013 inductee to the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame.  Sergeant Taylor served as team leader of 6-man long range reconnaissance patrols in Vietnam, he earned the Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Air Medal.  Sergeant Taylor returned to home & served as a 45 year member of American Legion Post 1689, along with the Vietnam Veterans of America and the Disabled American Veterans in 2005.  Taylor was recognized during a special ceremony at the Capitol along with other inductees to the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame, his biography along with other inductees can be found at www.nysenate.gov/veterans-hall-of-fame.

The Bainbridge village board has decided to have “No Parking” on North Main Street to Evans on Monday, during the Memorial Day parade.  The parade is expected to run from 10:30 to Noon Monday.

All area school budget votes passed yesterday, many by large margins, as most schools kept their tax levy increases around the 2% tax cap.  All library & bus propositions also passed in the WCDO listening area yesterday.

State Troopers arrested 31-year-old Douglas Dungy of Oneonta for 2nd degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation. The arrest resulted from a traffic stop on County Route 22, in Richfield Springs; Dungy was issued tickets and released for a later court date.
