President Barack Obama is expected to make a trip to the upstate region on August 22nd & 23rd on a bus tour through New York and Pennsylvania. The trip may include visits to Binghamton, Syracuse and Buffalo, & Scranton.  President Obama has visited the Albany area 3 times since he was elected, a visit to Binghamton would be the first presidential visit there since Bill Clinton visited in 2000.

State Police arrested 47-year-old Thomas McAvoy of Endicott for Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle and Unlawfully Possession of Marihuana.  The arrest resulted from a police pursuit on State Route 17, where A Trooper observed a Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling 81 miles an hour, during the pursuit; McAvoy is accused of traveling at 115 miles an hour.  McAvoy was stopped, and police confiscated marijuana, he was issued appearance tickets and traffic tickets for the Town of Union Court on August 20th. .

The push is on from State Senator Tom Libous of Binghamton, to save the Binghamton Psychiatric center and the Broome Developmental Center.  Libous told WCDO News that people can sign the petitions to keep both facilities open, at his website:

Governor Cuomo debated the pros and cons of hydraulic fracturing to reporters Monday in Albany.  Cuomo said that the state health department is still studying potential health effects, and that the state’s decision will be based in scientific information, not emotion.  The state moratorium against gas drilling has been in affect for almost 5 years, Hydrofracking had been in practice in the western counties of the state since 1979.

Licenses for the upcoming hunting, fishing and trapping seasons are now on sale at sporting outlets across New York.  Licenses can be purchased at one of the DEC license sales outlets statewide as well as through the DEC website, dec.ny.gov.  The 2013-2014 sporting licenses are valid beginning October 1st. The DEC will issue about 18% more deer management permits which will allow for the hunting of antlerless deer.

Binghamton City police are on the lookout for a 27-year-old Andrew Jaworski, who is wanted on a Binghamton City Court arrest warrant for a felony grand larceny charge.  Jaworski is described as white, 5 feet 9 inches tall, and 150 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes.  Anyone with information is asked to call the Binghamton Police Warrant Division at 772-7044.

State Police at Oneonta arrested 24-year-old Bryan Eichhorn of Laurens for Driving While Intoxicated Sunday.   The arrest resulted from a traffic stop on Main Street in Oneonta. Eichhorn was issued tickets for Oneonta Court on August 28th.

A US bankruptcy court hearing on the proposed sale of Endicott Interconnect Technologies for today has been postponed until August 20th.  Attorneys requested the postponement, following an objection filed by the US trustees office that raised concerns about the proposed sale of the company’s assets to an insider-owned company.  Endicott Interconnect Technologies filed for chapter 11-bankruptcy protection July 10th, claiming assets of $36 Million dollars with liabilities of more than $86 Million dollars.

Congressman Chris Gibson will be in Delaware County today.  Gibson is scheduled to visit the New England Wood Pellet Manufacturing Center in Deposit this morning, followed by the Delaware County Fair Luncheon in Walton at noon; Gibson will attend the Delaware county Fair throughout the afternoon and will march in the Delaware County Fireman’s Parade at 6:30.

Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Richard Westfall of Lakeland Florida after driving his car into a ditch on the Terry Road in the Town of Colesville at around midnight on Sunday. Westfall was charged with DWI, & refusing to take a Breathalyzer test.  He faces action in town of Colesville court at a later date.

State Troopers arrested 29-year-old Jesse Terpstra of Davenport for Driving While Intoxicated with a BAC result of .19%.  The arrest followed the investigation of a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Charlotte Creek Road and County Route 9 in Davenport; Terpstra was issued tickets returnable in the Town of Davenport Court today.

P.M. NEWS MONDAY 8-12-13

Delaware county Sheriff’s deputies responded Sunday to a domestic incident where a person was held at gunpoint at 1090 County Highway 5 in Bovina.  Deputies and State troopers responded & found a victim fleeing from the residence, who had been released by the perpetrator, 32 year old Justin Geraghty, who had taken the homeowners hostage following an earlier domestic incident at another residence.  Geraghty barricaded himself in the residence with a firearm and threatened to kill law enforcement officers.  Tear gas was deployed in an attempt to get Geraghty to surrender, he was found deceased inside the residence from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  Geraghty was wanted by the State Division of Parole, and by the Delhi Police Department for 1st degree Burglary, 3rd degree Assault and Petty Larceny.

Governor Cuomo’s popularity is moving upward, according to a new poll from Siena College out today.   The Siena poll found 65% of registered voters found Cuomo’s performance was favorable up 7% from the June poll numbers, while 30% found Cuomo’s job performance unfavorable.  Among the Upstate voters polled, 55% said that Cuomo’s performance was favorable, with 41% choosing unfavorable.

A motorcyclist was killed Sunday when a nearby car hit a deer, sending it airborne and into the path of the motorcycle.  Madison County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the accident on state route 8 in the Town of Brookfield Sunday, they reported that 31-year-old Phurba Tamang, of Utica was driving on Route 8 when she hit a deer, which became airborne and struck a motorcycle driven by 49 year old Cyle Chesebro of West Edmeston, Chesebro was pronounced dead at the scene.

Delaware County Deputies investigated a car & pedestrian accident on County Hwy 21 in the Town of Walton. 60-year-old David Gomez of the Bronx was traveling on County Highway 21 near Runion Road Thursday, when he had struck 37 year old William Caputo of Walton, who was walking down the center of the road.  No tickets were issued to Gomez and Caputo was transported to Bassett hospital in Cooperstown for treatment of injuries.

Local sales tax collections grew by $397 million, or 5.7 percent, for the first half of 2013 compared to the same period in 2012, according to a report issued by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli.  The gains were driven by strong sales in tax growth downstate during the first half, fueled by cleanup and rebuilding efforts following Superstorm Sandy. Upstate sales tax collections were slower; With Central New York at 2.3%, collections declined by 3.3 percent in New York’s Southern Tier, with the biggest drops in   Tioga and Broome counties. Governor Cuomo announced a week-long State Police enforcement initiative that will target speeding and aggressive drivers across the state. The “Speed Week” campaign runs this week and coincides with the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series at Watkins Glen International Raceway.  Approximately 1/3rd of all fatal crashes are the result of speeding. Troopers will also be watching for distracted or impaired drivers, vehicle occupants who are not properly buckled up, and drivers that are violating the “Move Over Law.”

The Delaware county DPW will be working on county route 14 from state route 357 to Treadwell, starting this morning.  Motorists are advised to expect delays, or to seek alternate routes; the work is expected to be completed Thursday afternoon.

State troopers arrested 17-year-old Landell Backus of Syracuse For 3rd Degree assault and criminal mischief, following a complaint at the Oneonta Job Corps.  Backus allegedly punched an employee in the face and damaged a computer.  Backus was arraigned in town of Milford court and was remanded to the Otsego county jail on $1,000 cash bail pending court action on august 13th.

State lawmakers received 1.8 million dollars in per diem expenses during the 6 month session that ended in June, a 28% drop from the year before.  Lawmakers had been criticized for doing little to check the legitimacy of lawmaker’s claims as to whether they were in Albany on a specific day, or needed to be in town on official business.  No receipts were previously required, state comptroller Tom DiNapoli said that lawmakers per diems continue to face review.

An Oneonta woman was listed in fair condition at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown following an accident on county route 48 in the town of Otego Wednesday.  State Police reported that Annette Lapine of Oneonta lost control of her vehicle while turning a corner and crashed into a telephone pole, no tickets were issued.

The annual Toys for Tots golf tournament fundraiser will be held tomorrow at Canasawacta Country Club in Norwich with a   Shotgun start at 9:00 AM. The money raised by the event will assist with getting toys to underprivileged children in the region this coming Christmas.

Hospice Chenango announces the 2nd Annual “We Honor Veterans” motorcycle ride to benefit Hospice. The ride will take place this Saturday & the money raised will be allocated to provide services to Veterans who reside in Chenango County and opt for Hospice care. The ride and is open to any rider and passenger for a fee of $10.00 per person. State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli today issued a report on the New York State Power Authority which questioned the authority’s travel expenses, ownership of a plane, & that 35% of employees earned more than $100,000 annually, which accounted for almost half of the authority’s expenses.  New York power authority operated 16 power plants providing low cost power to business and utilities, and employs of 1600 people.

Chenango county sheriff’s department Detectives arrested 23 year old Devan Ellsworth of Norwich for one count 3rd degree Burglary Thursday.  Ellsworth was arrested following  a reported Burglary to the Adult World store in the Town of Norwich at approximately 5:30 am Thursday morning, he was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $ 20,000.00 cash bail, The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests and charges are pending.

Delaware County Sheriff Deputy’s investigated a 1 car motor vehicle accident Thursday on State Highway 30 in the Town of Colchester.  18 year old Loren Early of Downsville lost control of his vehicle striking the guide rails twice before going into a ditch flipping the vehicle on to its roof.  Early was transported to Margaretville Memorial Hospital & was issued a ticket for speed not reasonable and prudent. Early faces court action in Town of Colchester Court on August 27th .

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office Arrested 54 year old Ricky Ferris for Driving While Intoxicated, Following an investigation of a traffic stop on State Highway 23 in the Town of Plymouth.   Ferris  was processed and released to a sober third party.  He is scheduled to appear in the Town of Plymouth Court at a later date.

State Senator Tom Libous is seeking the public’s to stop the state’s plans the Broome Developmental Center. The New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities recently announced that the facility would close within 3 years and 160 residents would move to group homes.  The announcement follows another planned closure of the Greater Binghamton Health Center, petitions to save both facilities can be found on the senator’s website: TomLibous.com.

Governor Cuomo announced that New Yorkers would be treated to a “Taste of New York” experience at the State Fair this summer. New York grown and produced food and beverage products will be sampled and sold under the Taste New York banner all across the Fair this year and also at the newly-renamed Taste New York Marketplace.  A Taste NY Wine and Cheese Competition will be held and fairgoers could win a Taste NY Basket of Bounty filled with ‘Made in NY’ products.

Congressman Chris Gibson released a statement today in advance of the release of the New York City Filtration Avoidance Determination Review by the state Department of Health.   Gibson said that flood mitigation efforts must be a priority the severe flooding in recent years, in addition for the need of clean water for downstate residents.  The Filtration Avoidance was first issued in 1997; it allowed the city to avoid water filtration of their upstate reservoirs through stringent regulations.  A review of the agreement was due to be released last year; it has not yet been released for public input.   Local residents looking for more information can go to gibson.house.gov/watershed.

The Chenango county sheriff’s department arrested 38-year-old Justin Pisanello of Greene Tuesday, for Harassment in the 2nd Degree.   Pisanello was charged following an altercation at Seeber’s Tavern in the Town of Smithville. He will appear in the Town of Smithville Court at a later date.

Governor Cuomo and BASS today announced the Bassmaster Elite Series Tournament would return to New York State in 2014.  The event will include the “Governor’s Challenge,” which will be a fishing competition featuring the Governor, elected officials, and some of the biggest names in professional fishing, The Governor’s Challenge will be held next fall in the Finger Lakes to attract visitors to the Upstate region and boost the local economy.

Former state Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno is expected to face a second federal trial after an appeals court on Tuesday rejected his claim of double jeopardy.  Bruno was convicted in 2009 of 2 counts of mail fraud, that the U.S. Supreme Court overturned conviction.  Bruno was accused of taking  $440,000 in consulting payments and $80,000 for a horse from an Albany-area businessman while serving as the State Senate Majority Leader. The appeals court ruling Tuesday sends the case back to federal court in Albany for another trial.

The Butternut Valley Alliance’s 5th Annual Summer Harvest Festival will take place in Guy Rathbun Park in Morris, from 3:00 to 6:30 PM today.   The festival is held in conjunction with the weekly Morris Farmers’ Market, it features local vendors with fresh produce, cheeses, meat and poultry, maple syrup, baked goods, flours and mixes, and plants.   The Alliance’s “Guide to Local Farm Food,” will also be available, & Admission is free.
