The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division executed a no knock search warrant at 118 Meadow Lane in the Town of New Berlin. During the search, crack cocaine was seized along with cash, packaging material, and paraphernalia.  Jessica and Alan Crisell were both charged with the Class E Felony of Criminal Nuisance, for maintaining premises for the unlawful sale of controlled substances. Jessica Crisell was also charged with Criminal Possession of a Hypodermic Instrument.  Dequay Shoulders of Syracuse, was charged Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell and Criminal Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, he was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $15,000 cash bail, pending action in the Town of New Berlin Court at a later date.

NYSEG REPORTS ABOUT 2000 customers without power this morning, following yesterday’s storms.  About 1500 of those without power are in Delaware County, NYSEG crews are working to restore power as soon as possible.

The State DOT announced that, crews will be conducting precision rock excavation operations at the Prospect Street Connector today & tomorrow between 10:00 AM & 2:00 PM. State Police will administer rolling slow-downs throughout the project, with area exit & entrance ramps closed for 15 minutes intervals. Flag personnel will also control traffic local side streets.

State Police at Oneonta arrested 29-year-old Zachary Simeon of Albany for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.  The arrest resulted from a vehicle and traffic law stop for speeding on Interstate 88 in Otego; Simeon was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Otego Court on September 19th.

P.M. NEWS WEDNESDAY 9-11-13

A motion to disqualify the Chenango County District Attorney from prosecuting the murder case against Ganesh Ramsaran of New Berlin woman has been denied. The motion would have required the appointment of a special prosecutor from outside the district attorney’s office, due to an alleged conflict of interest with the defendant.  Chenango county judge Frank Revoir denied the motion.   Ramsaran has been charged with 2nd degree murder in connection with the murder of his wife Jennifer late last year, she had been reported missing by her husband, her body was found several months later in a wooded area in the town of Pharsalia.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s department investigated a 1-vehicle accident on county road 2 in the town of Greene, at about 11:45 Tuesday morning.  24-year-old Jesse Ehlers of Greene left the pavement while operating a Jeep Cherokee, he struck an embankment & a tree.  Ehlers & his passenger, 19 year old Makayla Heisler of Greene were not wearing seatbelts & were ejected from the vehicle, and suffered serious head and back injuries.  Both were transported to Wilson memorial hospital in Johnson city, the cause of the accident was from unsafe speed for the curve in the road and road conditions.

State Police at Oneonta arrested 29-year-old David Sparaco of Oneonta for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property.  The arrest resulted from a complaint originating at Searle’s Garage in Davenport, who reported that several brake rotors & a radiator from a 1958 Mercury was stolen.   Sparaco was arrested at Otsego Auto Crushers in Oneonta, when he tried to sell the stolen property as scrap metal.  Sparaco faces future court action on the charges.

A federal judge has set a trial date of December  2nd for a new fraud trial for former Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno.  The 84-year-old Bruno’s 2 fraud convictions from 2009 were overturned on appeal. Bruno is accused of accepting $440,000 from a businessman for helping with state grants.

Governor Cuomo announced the launch of  “Every Student Present,” Tuesday, which is a public awareness campaign to help school leadership, parents, and communities promote school attendance. The state Public Service Commission is urging income-eligible consumers to sign up for a discount telephone service through a program aimed at making New Yorkers safer at home. The Lifeline program provides discounts for monthly residential phone bills for basic telephone service.  New Yorkers already receiving other benefits including Food Stamps, Veterans’ Disability, SSI and Home Energy Assistance Program help are eligible. more information is available at AskPSC.com.

Despite an overall drop in attendance at New York parks, Chenango Valley State Park had a steady flow of swimmers, campers, hikers, golfers and guests this summer. The park, in the Town of Fenton, recorded attendance of 94,136 from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends — a decrease of just 158 from the same time period last year.  At Oquaga Creek State Park, in northeastern Broome and Delaware counties, attendance dropped 10.2 percent this summer. Overall, officials attributed the slight attendance decline at parks across the state to a rainy start of the summer season.

“SeptemBeard” is a program where teams of men at various organizations around the country are growing beards this month to promote Prostate Cancer awareness.  Jeff Newman and the Men at Chambers & O’Hara Car & Truck center on Route 7 in Sidney said that donations are being collected 2 ways:

Newman said that research shows that Prostate Cancer can affect 1 in 7 men in their lifetime; he said collections would still be accepted into early October.

44-year-old Edward Swift of Colliersville has been arrested by state police on charges of 3rd degree grand larceny and falsifying business records. He was arrested in connection with an incident reported August 28th in the town of Oneonta, and will face court action shortly.

The town of Unadilla Highway department announced that Sheep Pen road is closed today until 3:00 PM.  Crews are replacing a culvert; the project is expected to be completed by 3:00 this afternoon.

Governor Andrew Cuomo visited the Southern Tier region earlier today.  The governor appeared this morning at Binghamton University for the NY Rising Committee Meeting; he followed that with a noontime visit at SUNY Cobleskill, for another NY Rising committee meeting.

Chobani officials announced that the mold that triggered a recall of some of its Greek yogurt last week is not associated with food-borne illnesses like salmonella or E-coli. The company identified the mold as a common species that usually affects fruits, vegetables and other plants, and has also been linked to previous cases of spoiled yogurt.  The company is still investigating how the yogurt became contaminated, as there was no evidence of mold on the products when they left the company’s Idaho facility.  Chobani formally recalled more than a half-dozen yogurt varieties last Thursday, with the product code 16-012 and expiration dates September 11th to October 7th.   95% of the affected products have already been pulled from shelves,

State Police at Oneonta arrested 29-year-old Brandon Wheeler, of Davenport for Felony Driving While Intoxicated with a BAC result of .13.  The arrest resulted from a traffic stop on State Route 28 in Oneonta where Wheeler was observed swerving his vehicle over the double yellow line.  Troopers determined that Wheeler was intoxicated and had a prior conviction for Driving While Intoxicated within the last 10 years.  Wheeler will appear in Town of Oneonta Court on September 24th.

State police arrested 61-year-old Michael Sheridan of South Otselic for 2nd degree identity theft and 2nd degree scheming to defraud.  The arrest followed a complaint Saturday to state police at Norwich, Sheridan faces court action shortly.

Oneonta police arrested 21-year-old Elijah Vergari of Oneonta on charges of grand larceny, criminal possession of a controlled substance and petty larceny.  Vergari was accused of talking a wallet at downtown business, and for allegedly going through parked vehicles.

Chenango county sheriff’s deputies arrested 31-year-old Dustin Fairchild of Greene on an active arrest warrant for 3rd degree assault.  Fairchild was arrested without incident and turned over to the Greene Police Department, he faces court action shortly.

State Police Employee Relations, announced that 35,203 people have signed up to take the exam.  The exam will be held at various locations around the state on October 5, 12, 19 and 26.  Troopers expect to place a recruit class from the eligibility list created by the October test during the summer of 2014.

Delaware County Deputies arrested 20 year old Cortney Hess of Grand Gorge, 24 year old Howard Macken of Grand Gorge and 37 year old Jason Conklin of Prattsville after an investigation of stolen scrap metal from Catskill Craftsman in Roxbury.  Deputies were alerted to this larceny through security cameras on the property.  All face action in town of Stamford court today at 6:00 PM.

Delaware County Deputies arrested 20 year old Christopher Bracci  of Delhi for Driving while Intoxicated, Failure to Submit to a Chemical test, Improper use of Dealer plates and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana.  He was arraigned in the Town of Delhi Court. He was sent to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $1,000.00 cash bail.

P.M. NEWS MONDAY 9-9-13

State Police at Oneonta arrested 28-year-old Timmie Clarkson of Oneonta for 2nd degree Strangulation, Aggravated Harassment, & Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.  The arrest resulted from an investigation of a dispute on Elmwood Avenue in Oneonta, where Clarkson is accused of choking the victim until she lost consciousness and after he left the residence, he continued to call the victim and threaten her.  Clarkson was arrested, he was found to be in possession of narcotics. Clarkson was arraigned at the Town of Oneonta Court and remanded to the Otsego County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer confirmed that several local river gauges will receive funding through 2014.  The funding avoids an October 1st shut off, at gauges on the Susquehanna River at Bainbridge, Windsor and Binghamton, the Unadilla River at Rockdale and the Chenango River at Sherburne and Greene. Schumer noted that the funding does not include all river & stream gauges, and he will continue to pursue permanent funding sources.

State DEC deputy commissioner Anne Reynolds testified that the agency continues to review comments they received on the 2011 draft review on Hydraulic Fracturing.  Reynolds testified on behalf of the DEC at a hearing held by a legislative committee Friday, she said that there is no set schedule for a final decision on hydrofracking.  The DEC review of fracking first started more than 5 years ago.

Delaware County Deputies investigated a motorcycle accident on Basin Clove Road in the Town of Hamden. 54-year-old Anthony Ives of Bainbridge lost control of the motorcycle and rolled it over.  Ives was transported by Life-net helicopter to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown with undisclosed injuries, he was listed in stable condition.

Governor Cuomo announced a new program under Charge NY to accelerate the market adoption of electric vehicles and to make EV infrastructure easier to use and more economically viable in New York.  The Electric Vehicle-Enabling Technology Demonstration Program offers $2 million to fund research and demonstration projects for electric vehicles. The program aims to create a statewide network of up to 3,000 charging stations over the next 5 years.  Proposals for the Program are due October 22.   More information is available at nyserda.ny.gov.

Sidney Center’s 4th Annual Tractor Parade will be Saturday, September 21st, with the parade line-up at 10:00 AM and the parade beginning at Noon. There will be activities for the kids & the Sidney center Fireman’s BBQ.   Last year over 80 vehicles participated, this year organizers expect the numbers to top 100 vehicles traveling in from other states.  The Sidney Center Improvement Group sponsors the event.

The third murder trial for Cal Harris has been delayed, and his scheduled start of October 7th  in Tioga County Court has been removed from the schedule.  Harris’s attorney has filed motions to move the trial out of Tioga county court, where Harris has been convicted twice for the murder of his wife Michelle in 2001.

Delaware county department of public works will be performing work on county route 14 from state route 357 for 2.6 miles to the hamlet of Treadwell, starting this morning.  Motorists are advised to expect delays or seek alternate route during the project, which is expected to be completed this Friday.

The State DEC will be holding Environmental Conservation Police Officer and Forest Ranger exams on November 16th.  Those interested in taking the exam have until October 2 to apply for the exam.  Those who want to apply for both positions, and meet the required qualifications, must submit separate applications and will be required to take both examinations. The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, with the help of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, arrested 25-year-old John Cornell of Endicott on an active arrest warrant issued by the Chenango County Family Court.  Cornell was arrested under Article 4 of the Family Court Act; he was transported to the Chenango County Jail to begin serving a 6-month sentence or pay a $3500 Purge.

Assemblyman Cliff Crouch announced that grants are available for businesses impacted by flooding from Hurricane Sandy, Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee through New York State’s Small Business Storm Recovery Program. Businesses are eligible to apply for low-interest loans, as well as grants of $50,000 or more to help replace machinery, moveable equipment, inventory, furniture and fixtures. STATE COMPTROLLER Tom DiNapoli released the results of an audit for the village of Unadilla board.  The report stated that the Board adopted budgets that included overestimated expenditures, underestimated revenues, and the appropriation of fund balance to finance operations in 3 of the last 6 years, the funds were not available. DiNapoli’s recommends that the board should adopt realistic budgets that are based on the previous years’ trends in actual revenues and expenditures, should estimate their ending fund balance, avoid plans to use more than they have available.

DOT officials report that the State Route 17 eastbound ramp to Interstate 81 northbound will close tomorrow from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.  Crews will be performing steel girder work, and Route 17 eastbound will be reduced to 1 lane between the Airport Road exit 71 and the I-81/route 17 interchange.

Whether its flooding, tornadoes or a fire, a disaster or emergency can hit at any time. September is Emergency Preparedness Month. Emergency responders remind people to have a plan. Know where you are going to go and how to meet up with family members. People should also have a disaster kit with items such as food and a can opener, clothing, medications and hygiene items. You should have enough to last 72 hours, since often times, emergency responders need time to set up supplies and resources.
