Sidney Town Supervisor candidates, Republican Gene Pigford & democrat Bill Heath will participate in tonight’s town debates at the Sidney library.  2 seats are open on the Sidney town board, Democrats Pete Cordes & Paul Muratore, and Republicans John Woodyshek & Jodi Proffitt will participate.  Those who would like to submit written questions are advised to arrive to the Smart Community room at 5:30; the event will begin at 6:00PM.  WCDO will be recording to nights debates for broadcast on Monday night at 6:00 PM, the debate will also be placed on the WCDO website.

Former Governor George Pataki, former Comptroller Carl McCall and union and business leaders will head the New York Tax commission set up by Governor Andrew Cuomo, to find ways to cut $2 to $3 billion dollars in taxes over the next few years.  Cuomo commented at a press conference in Westchester County Wednesday:

The Commission’s recommendations will be due by December 6th for inclusion in the Governor’s 2014 State of the State message.

Flu season doesn’t technically start until December 1,  experts are urging people to get their flu shot early after last year’s flu numbers rose across New York State. Anyone 6 months and older should get the shot every year. People younger than 5, and older than 50 have the highest risk of suffering complications from the flu. New York is looking into creating its first statewide early warning system for tornados. A bill signed into law by Governor Cuomo directs a review into the feasibility of installing a system that could involve sirens at firehouses, schools, hospitals, sports facilities and other buildings to alert residents in areas statewide. The effort by the Legislature and governor comes after three years of severe weather that included hurricanes, floods and tornados. The warnings would also be spread in social media including text messages. The first report of findings and recommendations is due March 1st.

THE CHENANGO COUNTY arrested 3 people on charges of criminal possession of a controlled substance, conspiracy, making a false written statement and Petty Larceny.  Charged were 25-year-old Vanessa Furgison, 40-year-old Brian Smith and 30-year-old Heidi Moore, for allegedly stealing a prescription bottle from a victim’s purse while visiting that person’s residence in the village of new Berlin.  All 3 were issued appearance tickets for town of New Berlin court at a later date.

State police in Oneonta arrested  39-year-old Michelle Anderson of Oneonta for aggravated DWI with a BAC  of .23% and other vehicle and traffic law violations. While investigating a one-car accident on County Highway 60 in Oneonta, troopers determined the driver was intoxicated.  Anderson was issued tickets or Oneonta town court October 22nd.

The Chenango County Sheriffs Department arrested 44-year-old Mark Youngs of Plymouth on a charge of 2nd degree harassment.  Youngs was charged following a complaint in the Town of Plymouth, he had previously advised by Deputies to leave the victim alone following an earlier incident.  Youngs will appear in the Town of Plymouth Court at a later date.

Commerce Chenango, The Chenango Foundation, Inc. and the Advisory Committee of Leadership Chenango announced that Robert Wadsworth is the 2013 recipient of the Harry Tecklenburg Leadership Award.  The award will be presented at the Kick-off Dinner for the Leadership Chenango Class of 2014 tonight at the Canasawacta Country Club in Norwich.  Wadsworth served as Chairman and CEO of Preferred Mutual Insurance Company in New Berlin, from 1997 until his retirement in 2008.

P.M. NEWS WEDNESDAY 10-2-13

State Police arrested 37-year-old Victoria Young of Hancock for endangering the welfare of a child and 2nd degree Forgery.  Troopers also arrested 33-year-old Jeffery Johnson of Hancock for endangering the welfare of a child and criminal possession of a forged instrument.  Young & Johnson were arrested yesterday following the death of their 2-year-old daughter Andie Johnson, who fell from a second-story apartment September 17th in Hancock.  The pair were arraigned in the Hancock court and remanded to the Delaware county jail with no bail set at this time.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Department arrested a 16-year-old male youth from Plymouth Sunday afternoon, after he drove through a police road check in the town of Oxford.  Deputies said that the youth had a 3-year-old passenger in the vehicle that was in an improper child restraint seat.  The youth was charged with Felony Aggravated Driving while Intoxicated, Driving While Ability impaired by drugs and endangering the welfare of a child.  The unidentified Teen was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $100 cash bail.

New York Farm Bureau has announced their annual “Circle of Friends,” naming 101 State Legislators to the list. Local lawmakers who were named to the list included state senators Jim Seward, John Bonacic & Tom Libous and Assemblymen Cliff Crouch, Bill Magee & Pete Lopez.  The award is an indication of the individual lawmaker’s legislative support of New York agriculture and of the Farm Bureau.

State troopers arrested 30-year-old Michael Hercules of Columbia, Maryland for criminal possession of a weapon, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and unlawful possession of marihuana. Hercules was stopped for speeding on Interstate 88, he was found to have a suspended license and illegally possessed a handgun. He was arraigned before the town of Maryland court and was remanded to the Otsego county jail in lieu of $2,000 cash bail.

The Public Market in Norwich is now a year-round farmers market. The winter farmers market will run from November through May each Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The location will continue to be in East Side Park as long as the weather is temperate. Former Governor George Pataki, former Comptroller Carl McCall and union and business leaders will head a tax-cutting commission set up by Governor Andrew Cuomo.  The commission will find ways to cut $2 to $3 billion dollars in taxes over the next few years.  Cuomo and the state legislature cut state spending the first  2 years of his administration, but were forced to increase spending in the budget currently in effect, but the state did implement a 2% tax cap for school districts & municipalities in order to keep taxes from increasing above the rate of inflation.  The Commission’s recommendations will be due by December 6th for inclusion in the Governor’s 2014 State of the State message.

State troopers arrested 55-year-old Jeffrey All of Bloomville for felony DWI, unauthorized use of a Motor Vehicle, & felony aggravated unlicensed operation.  While responding to a report of a stolen vehicle in Delaware County, troopers found that the suspect returned to the residence after crashing the vehicle.  All is accused of taking the vehicle without permission, that he was intoxicated at the time of the accident, had 2 prior DWI convictions in the last 10 years, and his BAC was 3 times the legal limit.   All was arraigned and was remanded to the Delaware county jail with no bail set pending future court action.

Novelty lighters at checkout counters that look like guns, cars, toys, tiny fire extinguishers and even SpongeBob SquarePants are being outlawed in New York. Governor Cuomo signed a bill to ban the sale of the items. The lighters range from small toy-like bodies with whistles and buzzers to larger M-16 military rifle replicas. Others are lighters that are part of wristwatches or play music or flash lights. The governor said the goal is to keep the lighters away from children and preventing a fire hazard.

The Siena Research Institute released a showing that 46% of new Yorkers are in favor & 46% oppose of a state amendment to allow non-Indian, Las Vegas style casinos in New York. 55% would approve the amendment with wording that reads, “allow the Legislature to authorize up to 7 casinos in New York for the legislated purposes of promoting job growth, increasing aid to schools, and permitting local governments to lower property taxes through revenues generated.” The poll also revealed a decline in Governor Cuomo’s favorability rating to 50%, down 2 points from August.

The town of Unadilla highway department will conclude their culvert replacement project on Rod & Gun Club road today.  The road will be closed until 3:00 PM Today; the crews have replaced 10 culverts this week.

P.M. NEWS TUESDAY 10-1-13

The state opened its new health-care exchange today in hopes of trying to enroll more than 1 million uninsured New Yorkers. The state has a website and hotline to help people enroll, called NY State of Health. The exchanges are open to individuals or small business owners with 50 or fewer employees. The enrollment period runs through March 31. The exchanges start Jan 1st.  For more information go to nystateofhealth.ny.gov

The gap between opponents and supporters of hydraulic fracturing has grown to an all-time high in New York, according to a new poll. The Siena College survey shows 45 percent of New York voters do not support allowing high-volume fracking in the state, compared to 37 percent who do. Eighteen percent had no opinion. The gap is even larger upstate, where 52 percent oppose fracking and 34 percent are in favor.

Governor Cuomo signed 43 bills into law late last week, including a measure restricting the custody rights of a person who conceives a child through sexual assault.  Under that bill,   judges would be required to presume that putting a child in the custody of the attacker is not in the child’s best interest.  Previously, the law had only specifically rejected custody to attackers who conceived a child and were convicted of forcible first-degree rape. The new law expands that provision to include a number of different crimes, including second-degree rape and predatory sexual assault, among others.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 13-year-old male from the Town of Lebanon Thursday, after he allegedly made a bomb threat at the Sherburne Earlville School.  The 13-year-old male is accused of making a written threat referring to blowing up the school. The unidentified teen was charged with Falsely Reporting an Incident, he was issued a juvenile appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Chenango County Family Court at a later date.

The New York farm bureau president Dean Norton announced that the federal government shutdown could be disastrous for New York farmers, as the safety net for dairy farmers in the farm bill will put dairies in a vulnerable position if milk prices dive below production costs again.  The government shutdown also will leave many of New York’s fruit and  vegetable growers without a safety net if there is no movement to secure a responsible farm policy in the  next few months.  Norton also stated that It won’t just be the state’s farmers who will pay the price of not  having a Farm Bill in place, but consumers will have to pay more money to put healthy farm fresh foods on their tables.

Governor Cuomo signed a bill allowing roadside markets to sell wine from farm wineries as well as measures to extend or reconfigure a number of wine trails.  The wine bill would allow products from up to two nearby farm wineries to be sold at roadside markets. The wineries must be within 20 miles of the farm stand.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 10th Annual Light The Night Walk will be held tonight at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton.  Registration will begin at 5:00 pm and all festivities will take place around NYSEG Stadium, with a Remembrance Ceremony at 6:00 pm, Opening Ceremonies at 6:15 pm & the Walk Begins at 6:30 pm.  Funds raised through donations will support programs of blood cancer research, local patient aid, advocacy, education and  community service.

Governor Cuomo signed legislation to prohibit pharmacies and retails stores from selling cold medications containing Dextromethorphan to anyone under 18 unless they have a prescription.    The new law addresses the problem of teens using the cough suppressant to get high, its use & abuse could lead to short and long term health risks including agitation, paranoia, hallucinations, and even death.  All retail establishments selling DXM will be required to request proof of age unless the customer appears to be more than 25 years of age, or they could be subject to a fine of $250 for each violation.

THE NEXT GENERAL CLINTON CANOE REGATTA MEETING WILL BE HELD Tonight, AT THE Highway 7 Bar & Grill in Bainbridge at 7:00 PM FOR the annual Kickoff meeting.  Regatta Chairman John Harmon is inviting anyone interested to the meeting, to bring in any new ideas for the 2014 REGATTA.  Harmon said that they would be putting together committees in order to keep the regatta growing.

P.M. NEWS MONDAY 9-30-13

Judges could remain on the state court of appeals, until they turn 80 years old if New York voters approve a referendum November 5th to increase the age limit by a decade. The constitutional amendment would also extend the mandatory retirement age for New York’s main trial court to 80. The state Senate voted 54-9 and the Assembly 117-25 to advance the proposal.

New York regulators said four insurers would pay $2.2 million in restitution to over 3,400 seniors across the state because of overcharges on their policies. The Department of Financial Services said the refunds are for Medicare supplemental insurance and average $624 per policyholder. The department investigation showed the companies failed to comply with New York’s requirement they spend most premiums on medical bills instead of administrative expenses or profits. The insurers are American Progressive Life and Health Insurance Co, Excellus Health Plan, First United American Life Insurance Co and Transamerica Financial Life Insurance Co. Distribution will begin Sept. 30th.

The New York attorney general’s office is sponsoring a statewide gun buyback program where people can turn in weapons for debit cards.  Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said the program aims to remove firearms from places where the guns can be stolen or misused. Officials will begin accepting unloaded working and broken guns in Binghamton and other locations in the state in the coming weeks.  More information is available at oag.state.ny.us

Governor Cuomo signed a bill to restore up to $90 million for programs for the developmentally disabled. Earlier this year, lawmakers had agreed to a plan from Cuomo to cut $90 million in funds for the disabled. The cut was needed to help make up for an unexpected $1.1 billion bill from federal government in healthcare costs, but the agreement drew criticism from the disabled community. The governor charged a work group made up of some of the providers and state officials to address the $90 million; they came up with $40 million in savings through audits. The other $50 million in savings will come from program reductions spread out over time.

The Chenango county sheriff’s department investigated a motor vehicle accident on state highway 41 in the town of Greene Thursday afternoon at about 2:30 PM.  23-year-old Sean Urich of Little Falls was ticketed for moving from a lane unsafely lost control of the tractor-trailer, & the vehicle overturned onto the shoulder.  Urich was airlifted to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, with lower back *& shoulder injuries.

Delaware County Deputies observed 58 year old Cindy Prosser of Oxford traveling South on State Hwy 10 in the Town of Hamden with a flat tire. Upon conducting a traffic stop Prosser was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated. Prosser was released and is to re-appear in the Town of Hamden Court at a later time.

State troopers arrested 49-year-old Bert Dorfman of Binghamton for criminal possession of a controlled substance, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, operating without insurance and suspended registration.  The arrest occurred in the town of Dickinson, where a trooper was advised by his license plate reader that a passing motorist had a suspended registration.   Dorfman had no valid insurance and had a suspended driver license and registration, upon arrest, he was also found to be in possession of a crack pipe with crack cocaine residue.  Dorfman was issued tickets returnable to the Dickinson court on October 8, 2013.

The Chenango county sheriff’s department arrested Jeremy Hazard of Smyrna on an active arrest warrant for Promoting Prison Contraband.   Hazard was found to be in possession of Marihuana while entering the Chenango County Correctional Facility. Hazard was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and held on $1,000.00 cash bail & will reappear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.

Schwartz is a BU graduate with a bachelor’s degree in political science, he has served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration and UN Deputy Special Envoy for Tsunami Recovery.

Crews from the town of Unadilla have closed rod & gun club road today.  Crews are replacing a culvert, the road will re-open at 3:00 this afternoon, and motorists are advised to seek alternate routes until that time.
