36 year old Cody Bush of Binghamton was sentenced as a second time felony offender in Broome County Court today to 6 years in State Prison followed by 3 years of post-release supervision for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Bush was recently pulled over by the Binghamton Police, Bush was found to be in possession of methamphetamine, fentanyl, packaging materials, and a digital scale, he admitted to possessing with the intent to sell.

New York State Department of Health’s computer system improperly paid $16.2 million in Medicaid claims during a 6-month period that started in October 2023, according to an audit released today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Overall, the audit found 370 million claims were processed between October 2023 through March 2024, totaling nearly $49.6 billion.

The Norwich Police Department announced a joint venture with the Norwich City School District and the Vestal Police Department, Vestal Police Department has invited the Norwich Police Department School Resource Officer, Nicholas Mooney, to bring up to 20 High School Students to attend the Youth Police Academy, which is a 2 week venture that runs from July 14th through July 25th. Students will take part in physical training and lectures to include SWAT Team tactics, Bomb Disposal, EMS/Fire Support, K9 Demonstrations and Crime Scene Scenarios. The Norwich City School District will provide daily transportation for the students, those who are interested should email Officer Mooney at nmooney@norwichpd.org and ask for an application. There is no fee for this event.

The 216th New York State Police Academy Graduation, will be held today at 11:00 AM at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center, in Albany. 176 new Troopers will be honored for completing the 216th session of the Basic School of the State Police Academy, the new Troopers will be assigned to their new troops and will report for duty to begin their career with the State Police.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today discussed the impact that President Trump’s hiring freeze for federal workers will have on Americans receiving Social Security, Medicare benefits, or veterans’ benefits.

Last year, the number of Social Security Administration employees, who process Social Security applications, hit a 27-year low; Trump’s hiring freeze risks increasing application processing times, wait times for appointments, and hold times for phone calls. 86% of Veterans Health Administration facilities reported severe shortages for medical officers, and 82% reported similar shortages for nurses.

Walton Fire and EMS Responded Tuesday Night at about 7:00 PM to a tractor trailer rollover approximately 2 miles North of the Village on State Highway 10. A fully loaded milk tanker carrying 38,000 pounds of milk had collided with guardrails and rolled onto its side, a NYSEG pole was broken and live wires were on the ground initially preventing responders from getting to the incident and driver. NYSEG responded and cleared the lives wires allowing safe access to the scene. The driver extricated himself from the cab of the truck through a window with assistance from a nearby homeowner, he was assessed by Walton EMS and transported to Delaware Valley Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Traffic on State Highway 10 was diverted while the scene was cleared, the State DOT, DEC spill response, Delaware County Sheriffs Office and Delhi Fire Department assisted, the road reopened to all traffic and All units were back in service at 11:45 pm

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded last Thursday to the report of a vehicle traveling on the wrong side of the road on State Highway 23 in the Town of Davenport. Deputies observed a vehicle matching the description parked in front of the Tractor Supply, they made contact with the driver, 36-year-old Marie Schneider of Oneonta, she was charged with DWI, aggravated driving while intoxicated with a BAC greater than 0.18%, a, among other charges, She was released on traffic summonses and is to appear in the Town of Davenport Court at a later date.

50 year old Andras Kasuba of Brooklyn appeared before the Delaware County Court this week and was sentenced to time served to be followed by 5 years’ probation supervision for Aggravated Vehicular Assault and Driving While Intoxicated. On March 18, 2023, Kasuba was the driver of a vehicle in a crash where 3 individuals suffered serious injuries. Kasuba had a BAC 2.5 times the legal limit, he fled Delaware County and he was also the subject of a deportation proceeding in which he also failed to appear. Kasuba was eventually apprehended in Brooklyn by New York City Police & was returned to Delaware County for sentencing, he may still face deportation to Hungary.

State Police and local law enforcement agencies will participate in the national enforcement initiative on impaired driving in the week leading up to this year’s Super Bowl. The campaign which runs through Sunday, and targets underage drinking enforcement, along with increased patrols and sobriety checkpoints to deter, identify and arrest impaired drivers. During the 2024 Super Bowl weekend campaign, law enforcement officers arrested 262 people for impaired driving and issued 8,388 total tickets.

The latest Sienna College poll shows that 39% of New Yorkers view Governor Kathy Hochul favorably, while 47% do not. New Yorkers did supported 10 proposals from Hochul’s State of the State and her by a 42 to 26% margin, especially the budget plans, free breakfast and lunch for public school students, boosting the child tax credit, and limiting cellphone use at school.

Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation to enable providers who prescribe medications used to perform abortions to request that the dispensing pharmacy print the name of their practice on prescription labels instead of their personal name, she commented today in Albany:

The law follows a grand jury indictment in Louisiana against New York Doctor Margaret Carpenter for allegedly prescribing abortion pills online to a pregnant minor.

The State DEC announced Burn bans will be in effect again this year, from March 16th Until May 14, residents may not burn brush due to the continued increased risk of wildfires. DEC Officials report that Open burning of debris is the single-largest cause of spring wildfires in New York State, this year’s burn ban follows unprecedented wildfires in the Catskills late last year, along with a prolonged dry weather pattern and a fairly mild winter in a large portion of the state, there are a few exception, those can be found at dec.ny.gov.

The 2025 Regional Spelling Bee Champion was won Saturday by Margot Fieni of the Oneonta City School District. The US Northern District Court of New York’s Asset Recovery Unit collected $39,262,324 in civil, criminal and forfeiture actions in Fiscal Year 2024. $14,085,025 was collected in criminal actions, $15,874,944 was collected in civil actions, and $9,302,354 was collected in asset forfeiture actions. The Northern District of New York also worked with other U.S. Attorney’s Offices and the Department of Justice to collect an additional $18,995,733 in cases pursued jointly by these offices.

32 year old Nishan Iglesias of Endicott is facing multiple felonies after fentanyl and a ghost gun were recovered during an investigation by the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force last Thursday. WCDO Sports Director Nate Lull traveled to Binghamton on Saturday to cover the Division-1 Binghamton University Women’s Basketball team hosting U-Albany. Hancock alumna Laycee Drake plays for Albany and always has great support from local fans when her team plays close to home. The State Health Department is currently tracking 3 strains of the flu in New York State, with 48,000 new cases reported the week of January 18th to the 24, a 46% increase from the previous week. The state reports a total of over 177,000 cases of all 3 flu strains, over 11,000 have been hospitalized from influenza, there have been 2 pediatric deaths this flu season.

Michael Beilby of East Meredith was resentenced in Delaware County Court for violating the terms of his felony probation supervision. On September 25, 2020, Michael Beilby killed 2 people in a motor vehicle crash, he was driving while using drugs and using his cell phone, he pleaded guilty to 2 counts of Criminally Negligent Homicide & was sentenced to a split term of 6 months incarceration, followed by 5 years of probation supervision, and he was required to not use any illegal drugs or alcohol. The Delaware County Department of Probation accused Beilby of cocaine use and he avoided mandatory drug treatment appointments. Beilby admitted to those allegations & Judge Rosa ordered that Beilby be returned to probation supervision and start attending sessions of the Adult Treatment Court..

59 year old Brian Gill of Andres was indicted for Social Security Fraud in US District Court, for allegedly collecting disability benefits while concealing his work activity at a tree service company he owned and operated. The Social Security Fraud charge carries a maximum term of 5 years in federal prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of up to 3 years, Gill could also be ordered to pay restitution to the Social Security Administration for the funds collected.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies pulled over a vehicle in Sidney Monday night , they arrested 61 year old Douglas Scott of Afton. Scott was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Aggravated Unlicensed Operator, as was as a number of traffic summonses. Scott was released on traffic summons and an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Village of Sidney Court at a later date to answer the charges.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 23 year old Devon Kupris of Davenport for driving with a revoked driver’s license. Sheriff’s Deputies conducted a traffic stop last night in Delhi , Deputies determined that Kupris’ privileges to operate a motor vehicle had been revoked on 5 prior dates and that he was required to have an interlock device installed on any vehicle that he operated due to previous alcohol-related charges. Kupris was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, operating out of interlock restriction, plus several other traffic violations, he was released on traffic summonses and was directed to appear at the town of Delhi court at a later date to answer the charges.

18 year old Namique McBride of Binghamton, was sentenced to 8 years in State Prison followed by 5 years of post-release supervision for Criminal Possession of a Weapon. On May 4, 2024, Binghamton Police and the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force stopped a stolen vehicle, in which McBride was a passenger, he fled on foot, he was caught and he was found in possession of a loaded ghost gun.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 63 year old Keith Hansen, of Oneonta, for Sex Offender Failure to Notify Change of Address, following an investigation in to a registered sex offender who relocated from his residence in the Town of Oneonta and did not make the proper notifications to the Sex Offender Registry. During the investigation, a warrant was issued out of the Town of Middlefield for Hansen after he failed to appear for court proceedings for a previous sex offender violation charge. Deputies responded to the Oneonta Police Department and took custody of Hansen Monday on the active warrant, he was processed and turned over to corrections staff to await Centralized Arraignment.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 52 year old Travis Button of Norwich for Failure to Notify Law Enforcement of an Address Change. Button is a level 2 sex offender, he is required to report a change of address to authorities where he is residing, Button failed to do so, and he is currently held at the Chenango County Correctional Facility and is to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Sunday in the Town of Kortright to a motor vehicle accident on County Highway 29, Deputies made contact with the driver, 23-year-old Jillian Bishop of Newburgh. Deputies arrested and charged Bishop with Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated, Failure to Keep right and Open container in a Motor vehicle, among other charges, Bishop was processed and released on appearance tickets for Town of Kortright Court at a later date.

The State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for December 2024. New York State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held constant at 4.4% in December 2024. Locally Chenango county had 3.4% unemployment, Delaware County 3.9% and Otsego County 3.8%

A Delaware County Grand Jury returned a 4-count indictment against 51 year old Michael Thiel of Sidney, for Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Possession of a controlled substance, and Criminal Nuisance, Thiel is accused of possessing a pistol with the intent to use it unlawfully against another, he is also accused of possessing methamphetamine in the Village of Sidney with intent to sell, last October and that he maintained a premises in the Village of Sidney where persons came to gather for the purpose of engaging in the unlawful sale of narcotics.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 86 year old James Lieberman following a complaint involving a Juvenile at the Delhi Nursing and Rehab Center in the Town of Delhi. Lieberman is accused of exposing himself to a child less than 16 years of age, he was charged with public lewdness & endangering the welfare of a child and he is ordered to appear in Town of Delhi Court at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office announced that Corporal Kyle Karcher, Deputy Justin Mohr, and Deputy Victor Altheim have been awarded the Deputy of the Year Award from the New York State Sheriffs’ Institute. On September 4th, 2024, all three responded to a shots fired call in the Town of Hancock, They arrived on scene to find that a victim had been shot while walking his dog and had retreated into his residence with his girlfriend, as the perpetrator allegedly continued firing at their home.
