Governor Cuomo opened up the New York State Fair in Syracuse this morning, with a ribbon cutting ceremony.  Cuomo is currently running for a 2nd term as governor, his republican challenger Rob Astorino also made the rounds at the State Fair today, he is trailing Cuomo in the most recent polls by a 2 to 1 margin.  Green Party Candidate Howe Hawkins held a press conference at the main entrance to the fair at 12:00 Noon.

The 3rd murder trial of Owego Businessman Calvin Harris has been rescheduled to begin in October, instead of the original September 15th date, in Schoharie county court.  The move was made following arguments by Harris’s defense team during pre-trial proceedings.  Harris was first convicted in 2007 for the September 11th 2001 murder his estranged wife Michelle, that conviction was set aside when an eyewitness came forward claiming to have seen Michelle Harris after the original murder date.  Harris was convicted at his 2nd trial in 2009, which was also overturned, Michelle Harris’s body, and the murder weapon have never been found.

Governor Cuomo is calling on the state to outlaw discrimination against transgender people, claiming that gender identity should be included in the state’s civil rights law alongside race, religion, and disability.   Cuomo said that if he is re-elected, he would push to outlaw discrimination based on a person’s gender identity when it comes to housing, employment or public accommodations.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced a $16.65 billion settlement with Bank of America. The settlement includes $800 million that will be allocated to New York State; Bank of America acknowledged it made serious Misrepresentations to the public from the packaging, marketing, sale and issuance of residential mortgage-backed securities

 

 

The State Police CNET team, along with Endicott and Vestal Police arrested 32-year-old Greg Potter of Endicott, for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Unlawful Manufacture of Methamphetamine, and 2 counts of Criminally Using of Drug Paraphernalia.  Potter was arrested after police executed a search warrant.  Items seized included liquid and powder methamphetamines; liquid anabolic steroids, packaging materials and scales, as well as components used in the manufacture of methamphetamine.  Potter was arraigned in Village of Endicott Court and sent to the Broome County Jail without bail.

The State Police CNET Gun Investigation Unit, arrested 50 year old John Hamilton of Binghamton on 4 counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, 3 counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Unlawful Possession of a Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device, Unlawfully Possessing or Selling Noxious Material and Unlawfully Growing Cannabis.  Hamilton was charged after police executed a search warrant at his residence. Police seized illegally possessed weapons, explosives and marihuana. Hamilton was arraigned in Binghamton City Court and sent to the Broome County Jail without bail.

The Upper Susquehanna Watershed Project held annual conference at Sidney High School this afternoon, to present the projects of 7 students who collected data for a variety of projects all tied to the water quality of the Susquehanna River Basin.  Sidney Science Teacher Rich Townsend said that this summer, soil gauges were added:

Townsend said the data from the new soil gauges should give sufficient data on how the water saturation affects area-flooding issues over the next 1 to 5 years.

A.M. NEWS THURSDAY 8-21-14

The Upper Susquehanna Watershed Project will hold its annual conference at 1:00 PM in Room N509 at Sidney High School.  Students and teachers from the project will present reports on their research on the upper Susquehanna River basin. There will also be updates by faculty on Sidney High School’s Flood Monitoring Project.  The public is invited to attend.   Refreshments will be served.

Opponents of Hydraulic Fracturing for natural gas are planning to rally at the first day of the New York State Fair today, the day when the Governor of the state traditionally opens up the fair. The protestors will be at the Main State Fair entrance from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm in Syracuse.

P.M. NEWS WEDNESDAY 8-20-14

The Latest Quinnipiac Poll shows Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo continues to maintain a 2-to-1 advantage over his Republican challenger Rob Astorino in New York’s gubernatorial race. The poll has Cuomo ahead 56% to 28% over Astorino. The poll finds that many voters remain unfamiliar with Astorino, or Democratic Party challenger Zephyr Teachout.

Voters can expect new ballot lines this November, next to the familiar Democratic and Republican parties, as candidates seek to attract single-issue voters and get their names on the ballot two, three or even four times. Yesterday was the deadline for groups hoping to create ballot lines to submit petitions to state election officials. New lines expected on the November ballot include the Women’s Equality Party and Stop Common Core. New York election law allows candidates to run on multiple lines, with the number of votes for each line added together for a candidate’s total tally.

Deposit Fire Fighters responded to a fire this morning at around 1:45 at 172 Front Street. All occupants escaped without injury, Hancock and Windsor Fire Departments also responded to the fire, the cause of fire remains under investigation.

Governor Cuomo signed legislation to Expand and strengthen services for veterans, active service members and their families. The new law eases the transition to a new school for children of military families that relocate, lowers the cost of higher education for Veterans receiving benefits under the GI bills, & offers military family members greater flexibility with professional licenses received from other states or jurisdictions. The new law also strengthens the supplemental burial assistance provided by the state to military families when a service member dies in combat or as a result of injuries sustained on the battlefield.

The state labor department released the unemployment statistics for the month of July. State wide, the rate was at 6.8%, locally, Chenango county’s rate dropped 9 10ths to 5.7%, Delaware county dropped 1.1% to 6.6% and Otsego County dropped 9/10ths to 5.7%.

The American Red Cross continues to have an urgent need for blood and platelet donations, even as thousands of people answered the urgent call to donate last month. Through the end of July, the Red Cross saw an increase of 7.5 percent in the number of donors giving blood. Despite the increase, blood products are being distributed to hospitals as quickly as donations come in, maintaining the urgent need. The New York State Firemen’s association will hold their 142nd annual convention in Albany today through Friday. There will be an Awards ceremony, officer elections, lectures and field training for first responders from all over the state. State Troopers arrested 42-year-old Michael Lynch of Unadilla for Aggravated DWI with a BAC result of .19%. The arrest occurred after a vehicle stop for failing to keep right on County Route 23 in Sidney, Lynch was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Sidney Court on August 28th.

P.M. NEWS TUESDAY 8-19-14

An Otsego County man, charged with shooting his father, was sentenced yesterday. Michael Buck pleaded guilty to 1st degree manslaughter in June, for the fatal shooting of his 64-year old father, Joe Buck. Buck attempted to withdraw his plea earlier this month, but the motion was denied. Buck was sentenced to 20 years in state prison.

It was a successful week for the Delaware County Fair this year, despite 2 days with rain. County fair organizer John Jackson told WCDO News that they were pleased with the results:

Jackson said that The County Fairs Ultimate Idol winner was Joanna Yaeger from Horse Heads, also 214 participants in the 5K run/walk & 10K run, both Demolition Derbies were sold out, the Easton Corbin, Danielle Bradbery show drew about 3000 folks. Next years Delaware county fair will run from August 17-22.

Sue Andrews has been appointed Chief Financial Officer of Bassett Medical Center effective September 1, 2014. Andrews, who has been with Bassett’s Division of Finance for 34 years and vice president since 2008, will succeed Nicholas Nicoletta, who announced last month that he is retiring December 31, 2014 as CFO of Bassett Medical Center and Corporate CFO of Bassett Healthcare Network. Andrews is a native of Sidney.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Department arrested 40-year-old Richard Maricle of Oxford for Criminal Mischief & Criminal Contempt. Maricle was arrested following an investigation of domestic dispute in the Town of Oxford, where he is alleged to have destroyed property belonging to the victim and violated an order of protection. Maricle was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court & was ordered to the Chenango County Jail on $250 bail pending future court action.

A $117,000 federal grant will allow the Greater Binghamton Airport to conduct a study on sustainability. Congressman Richard Hanna announced the grant Monday, which will identify ways to reduce environmental impacts, realize economic benefits and improve community relations. The grant will help develop a sustainability policy for the airport to address the problem long-term. The study is expected to establish baseline figures to help the airport set goals.

Governor Cuomo announced the recipients of $340 million in full-day pre-kindergarten funding for 81 school districts and Community Based Organizations statewide, opening full-day classroom slots to nearly 37,000 children. The funding is the first installment as part of the State’s commitment to invest $1.5 billion over 5 years to build a Statewide Universal Full-Day Pre-Kindergarten program.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 56 year old Douglas Caesar of New Berlin for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance for allegedly possessing cocaine in the City of Norwich. Caesar was released on his own recognizance to return to the City of Norwich Court at a later date.

P.M. NEWS MONDAY 8-18-14

State Police responded to the report of a car & motorcycle accident in Apalachin Sunday at 1:40 PM at State Route 434 and Pennsylvania Avenue. State Police Investigators report that a Buick operated by 71 year old DONALD ULMER Sr. of Little Meadows, Pennsylvania turned left in front of an oncoming motorcycle operated by 43 year old AUBURN LYONS of South Gibson, Pennsylvania. Lyons was pronounced dead at the scene, an autopsy is scheduled to be performed at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton today, the Investigation is continuing.

Delaware County Deputies arrested 20-year-old Casey McKlveen of Latrobe Pennsylvania Saturday for 2nd degree Rape & Endangering the Welfare of a Child. McKlveen is accused of engaging in sexual contact with a female less than 15 years of age. He was arraigned in the Town of Delhi court, and was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $25,000 cash bail.

Otsego County will be holding its annual Household Hazardous Waste Event for Small Businesses on Friday September 12th, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Meadows Office Complex County Highway 33W in Cooperstown. Small businesses that qualify will receive a subsidy of $50 for cost associated with collection from the County. Registration is mandatory at 547-4225 during normal business hours through Labor Day, and then and Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 pm beginning September 2nd.

Delaware County Deputies conducted a traffic stop on Main Street in the Village of Franklin. 22-year-old Brooke Ketchum of Bainbridge was arrested for Driving while Intoxicated, unsafe start and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. Ketchum is scheduled to reappear in the Town of Franklin Court at a later date.

The Bainbridge Village Board will hold a work session this afternoon at 5:00 PM, to discuss the comprehensive plan. The board will hold their regular meeting on Tuesday, both meetings will be held at the village offices at 33 West Main Street, and both will be open to the public.

New York will send 2 tax-rebate checks next month: a $350 check for families with children and then a check to refund residents for this year’s growth in school property taxes. In 2013, Cuomo and Legislature agreed to provide the $350 checks to residents with children under 17 as of 2012 and with incomes between $40,000 and $300,000. This year, residents will receive the $350 checks in the mail. In 2015 and 2016, the money will come as credits when people file their state income taxes.

2 people were held without bail Friday night on first-degree kidnapping charges in the abduction of two Amish girls in Saint Lawrence County. 39 year old Stephen Howells and 25 year old Nicole Vaisey were arrested, based on information from 1 of the 2 girls abducted Wednesday. St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin Wells said that 7 year old Delila Miller & 12 year old Fannie Miller were in good health, they escaped from the house were they were brought and walked to the nearest home, where a resident took them back to their family.

State Police Community Narcotics Enforcement Team executed a search warrant at 16 Dumas Hill Road in the Town of Fenton. During the search 8 marihuana plants were seized along with 40 grams of processed marihuana, smoking devices and packaging material. 27 year old Christopher Hartmann of Fenton was arrested for Unlawfully Growing Cannabis, Criminal Possession of Marihuana and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana; he faces court action September 4th in the Town of Fenton court.
