Several local fire companies responded to the fire at the Hillcrest roller Rink on West Main Street in Sidney last night. Fire fighters from Sidney, Wells Bridge, Deposit, Mount Upton, Walton, Trout Creek, Oneonta, Unadilla, Masonville, Franklin & Bainbridge responded to the fire, which was called out at about 11:30 PM. Sidney Fire Chief Greg peck told WCDO News that the cause of the fire is undetermined:

Peck said the Hillcrest fire fell on the same date as the Whitaker’s fire in Sidney in 2007.

State police will participate in a national crackdown “Drunk Driving, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. The enforcement period will run from September 1st. Labor day weekend traditionally result sin heavy traffic, more accidents, serious injuries & fatalities. The State police goal is to maximize DWI Enforcement efforts to ensure that motorists are not injured or killed by an intoxicated driver. More than 10,000 are killed by drunk driving nationally each year.

Chenango county launched a new free “Have A Plan” Mobile App encourages people to have plan to get home safely if they’re impaired by alcohol or drugs.  The app operates on Iphone, Android & Windows platforms, and targets the 18-34 age range, with features such as designated drivers, find a taxi cab by GPS, alcohol impairment estimator, various motor skills tests to assess impairment levels, and a “Report DWI” button that connects users to local 911 services.  The App also offers a list of DWI facts, it can be found by searching the word “Chenango” in app stores.

State police arrested 32 year old Christopher Byrne and we year old Casey Jones of Coventry, for reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child, criminal possession of controlled substance, unlawful possession of marijuana, unlawfully growing cannabis, and possession of controlled substance outside its container. The arrests followed an investigation in the drug overdose of a 20-month-old child in Coventry; the child was initially treated at Wilson Memorial hospital in Johnson City & was transferred to Upstate Medical center in Syracuse. Byrne & Jones were arraigned in Coventry town court and were remanded to the Chenango county jail pending future court action; the child has been treated & released.

Binghamton University broke ground on their new $70 million dollars Smart Energy Research & Development facility this morning, at the Innovative Technologies Complex. The 114,00 square foot building will house the Harpur college of Arts & Sciences physics & chemistry departments, research will focus on energy efficient technologies including making solar power more economically competitive, reducing and using thermal energy generated by computers and other electronic device.

State police arrested 21 year old Samantha Smith of Oneonta for criminal impersonation & failure to have an interlock device, plus unlawful possession Marijuana, following a traffic stop for a defective tail light on state route 7 in Oneonta. Police accuse Smith of giving a false name to the trooper, the check of her identity showed that she was restricted to diving only vehicles with an interlock device due to a previous DWI arrest, she was also found to possess Marijuana. Smith faces court action in Oneonta court September 9th.

Congressman Chris Gibson will join state and local officials at 10:30 This Morning at the Masonville Town Hall for the announcement of an award from the National Association of State Agencies for Surplus Properties. The town of Masonville is being honored for its innovative repurposing of a surplus Army truck for use as a town dump truck and snow plow, which saved town taxpayers more than $200,000.

Sidney Village Police arrested 51 year old Wesley Eignor of Sidney for 7 counts of failure to provide food & drink to impounded animals, in violation of State Agriculture & markets law. Eignor is accused of not providing food and & water to 3 dogs, 3 cats and a bird for an extended period of time, he was arraigned & will reappear in Sidney Village Court at a mater date.

State agencies spent more than $316 million on overtime in the first 6 months of 2014, a jump of $22 million over the same period in 2013, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. State employees worked more than 7.8 million overtime hours, up 7.6% over the same period in 2013. The total cost of overtime as a percentage of gross payroll rose slightly, from 3.9 to 4.3% in the first 6 months of 2014. Last year, overtime at state agencies rose to a record $611million, up nearly 16 percent over 2012. The largest amount of overtime came from the Department of Corrections, Office of Mental Health, and Office for People with Developmental Disabilities & the Department of Taxation & Finance.

Congressman Chris Gibson met with local elected officials, business owners, and educators this afternoon to discuss further coperations between the educational and business commuinties, to help with the economic development issues in the Sidney area. Congressman Gibson said that consituents are concerned with the education fo their children, and with possible careers for their children locally:

The meeting was hosted by The Utica School of Commerce, and held at the Sidney Public Library, congressman Gibson suggested a follow up meeting in 6 months to review progress.

Oneonta Police arrested 26 year old William Alvarez of the town of Maryland early Saturday morning, on charges of DWI, unlawful fleeing police, refusal to take a breath test, Speeding, unsafe lane change, unsafe start, failure to keep right and not wearing a seat belt. Alvarez was sent to the Otsego county jail on $1,750 bail pending future court action.

Governor Cuomo today announced the $40 million NY Prize Competition, by challenging New York businesses, entrepreneurs, and electric utilities to design and implement community-based microgrids, which offer energy independence, local power generation and distribution. A City of Norwich resident was arrested by Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for underage possession of alcohol and open container in a motor vehicle. 18-year-old Gage Leach was after he allegedly pulled up next to Deputy Blincoe’s patrol car and asked for directions. Leach was a passenger in the vehicle was found to be in possession of an opened bottle of an alcoholic beverage. Defendant was issued appearance tickets for Town of Norwich Court at a later date, he was charged with Underage Possession of Alcohol & Open Container in a Motor Vehicle

Manufacturers of alcoholic beverages have more than doubled in New York over the past 4 years, according to data released by Governor Cuomo’s office. The number of alcoholic-beverage producers has risen from 366 in 2011 to 752, with significant increases in the number of farm-based manufacturers. In all, the state is now home to 291 farm wineries, up from 195 in 2011 and 57 farm-based breweries, which were authorized by a state law that took effect last year.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 30-year-old Nicole Pickard of Green for Petit Larceny and Conspiracy. Pickard allegedly stole $600 from a residence in Greene, she will appear in Town of Greene Court at a later date.

The State Association of Realtors released its July home sale report. Across the state, new listings were up 1 percent compared to July 2013. The number of sales closed was down 10 percent, the median sales price dropped 0.4 percent and the total number of homes for sale was down 2 percent. In Delaware County, new listings were up 2 percent compared to July 2013. The number of sales closed was down 5 percent, the median sales price was up 17 percent and the total number of homes for sale was up 4 percent. In Chenango County, new listings were up 19 percent. The number of sales closed was down 35 percent, the median sales price dropped 21 percent and the total number of homes for sale was down 1 percent

P.M. NEWS MONDAY 8-25-14

State Police arrested 53-year-old Donna Huzinec of Norwich, for 1 count of 2nd degree Grand Larceny & 20 counts each of 2nd degree Forgery & Falsifying Business Records.
The arrests were made following an investigation into the defendant allegedly filing for and receiving payments for services she did not provide while being employed by Springbrook Residential Services.   Huzinec was issued an appearance ticket for the Pharsalia Town Court on August 28th.

Attendance continued to soar at the New York State Fair in Syracuse. Officials said 83,438 people passed through the turnstiles yesterday, 381 more than last year. Sunday’s attendance marked highest first-Sunday attendance in the last five years. So far this year, 4,920 more people have attended the first four days of the fair than during the same time period last year.

A statewide crusade against texting while driving spurred law enforcement agencies, in the Southern Tier and across New York state, to hand out record numbers of tickets last year for texting behind the wheel. Texting-while-driving tickets more than doubled from 2012 to 2013, & the number grew after the state changed texting and driving from a secondary offense to a primary one in 2011. Fines for texting and driving can be as much as $150 for the first offense, $200 for the second offense and $400 each time beyond that within 18 months.

The Norwich Police, in conjunction with the Chenango County STOP- DWI office, will conduct several Sobriety Road Checks in the coming week at various locations in the county. The first Road Check will be tonight. The road checks are a highly visible method of reminding the public to Not Drink and Drive.

State Police arrested 50-year-old Jeff Winegard of Whitney Point for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. Troopers responded to a Broome County 911 report of a one-car accident on Hickory Street in Triangle. Winegard was issued tickets for Town of Triangle court September 3rd.

A.M. NEWS MONDAY 8-25-14

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation of a Thursday morning 10:00am two car head-on collision on Cat Hollow Road in the Town of Colchester that claimed the life of one person and seriously injured four others. The accident claimed the life of 48-year-old William Sharpless of Nineveh and seriously injured four Bronx, NY, residents. Preliminary investigation revealed that Sharpless was struck head-on by a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 30 year old Crest Wood of Bronx. Wood, 34 year old Alnie Chisholm, 19-year-old Georgette King and 21-year-old Yolanda Jones, all of Bronx, NY, were seriously injured and were taken to Westchester Medical Center. Deputies are asking any witnesses to call 746-2336.

One man was killed and 4 other people were critically injured in a serious two-car motor vehicle accident in the town of Colchester on Thursday morning, The crash occurred at about 10 AM on County Highway 7, Delaware County deputies & state police responded, the male driver of one of the vehicles was killed, 4 occupants in the other vehicle, were critically injured & transported to trauma centers in the Hudson valley region. The names of those involved in the accident are being withheld until notification is given to the families, the investigation is continuing.

A mid-level appeals court reversed a lower court’s decision to throw out petition signatures of a Republican state Senate candidate. The state Supreme Court Appellate Division ruled the lower court erred in rejecting the petitions of Tioga County businessman Denver Jones, who is seeking to unseat State Senator Tom Libous of Binghamton. On August 1st the state Board of Elections determined 743 of the 1,713 signatures Jones submitted in July were invalid due to residency issues and other problems. The new order states a total of 203 signatures are reinstated, giving Jones more than required 1,000 signatures. The decision is not final, the case was sent back to the lower court for further proceedings.

The Delaware County Department of Corrections announced that the 4th annual Andrew Brown Memorial Golf Tournament would be held tomorrow at Hardwood Hills gold Course in Masonville, with a tee time of 8:30 AM. Organizers announced that the money raise with this years tournament will go to the family of Johnson City Police officer David Smith, who was shot & killed in the line of duty on March 31st.

 

 

Governor Cuomo’s campaign will not appeal a ruling allowing Zephyr Teachout to remain in the Democratic primary. A state appeals court rejected the campaign’s argument that Teachout has spent part of the past five years in Vermont. A lower court had already ruled Teachout could stay on the ballot for the September 9th primary. Teachout teaches at Fordham University Law School in New York City. A recent Quinnipiac University poll found 85 percent of state Democrats said they know too little about Teachout to have any opinion of her.

The Binghamton Mets clinched their second straight postseason berth as a result of the New Britain Rock Cats’ 10-1 loss to Richmond Thursday night. The berth marks Binghamton’s 8th trip to the postseason in franchise history, winning the Eastern League Championship in 1992 and 1994.

The Drug Enforcement Administration will enforce tighter control over prescriptions of the painkiller hydrocodone. U.S. Senator Charles Schumer said hydrocodone would be moved from a Schedule III drug to a Schedule II in 45 days. This will mean greater restrictions in how doctors can prescribe the drug as well as the quantity that can be prescribed. According to the DEA, nearly seven million Americans abuse controlled-substance prescription medications, including opioid painkillers that contain hydrocodone.

Tioga County Sheriff’s Department and Tioga County Bureau of Fire began a process last night that intended to make residents of Richford aware of a potential water hazard involving the Valley View Pond dam. While distributing flyers regarding the dam situation, an inadvertent message was sent to Richford area telephones telling people to evacuate erroneously. There was no need to evacuate; area Fire Department will siphon water from the Valley View Pond today to further reduce the water hazard at the dam.
