State Police executed search warrants at 105 Chaseville Road, Maryland, and 15 Main Street Schenevus, Friday. Seized during the search warrant was cocaine, marihuana, packaging materials, drug paraphernalia, .22 caliber revolver, and $8,100 in cash. State Police charged 52 year old Frederick Hubbard, of Maryland, with Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia & Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Also arrested was 23 year old Joseph Herr, of Schenevus, with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. Both were arraigned and remanded to the Otsego County Jail without bail.

30 year old Kyle Whitfield pleaded guilty last month to stabbing and killing 33 year old James Button of Greene in March 2014. Whitfield was sentenced under the terms of a plea deal in Chenango County Court; he will serve 5 years in prison for manslaughter with 5 years post-release supervision.

Delaware County Sheriff Deputies & Probation Officers searched a Trout Creek resident last Thursday, 40 year old Brad Stafford, and 31 year old Chad Stafford are accused of possessing hunting rifles and ammunition, they are prohibited from possessing firearms as a result of their previous convictions. Brad Stafford and Chad Stafford were charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon & Violation of Probation; they were arraigned & were remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility without bail pending further court action.

P.M. NEWS FRIDAY 4-24-15

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies & Delaware County Probation Officers arrested 33-year-old Randal Babcock of Sidney for a Violation of Probation & Criminally Possessing a Hypodermic Instrument. Officers found 3 hypodermic syringes in the residence; Babcock was arraigned in the Village of Sidney Court & was remanded to the Delaware County Jail without bail. Babcock was on probation from a previous DWI Conviction, he was also arrested by Deputies last October after he was charged by a Delaware County Grand Jury with Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, Babcock was released from the Delaware County jail on $7,500 cash bail on October 20th and was awaiting trial on that charge.

State Police at Sidney arrested former Afton Resident 26-year-old Kody Proffitt of Palm Coast, Florida for 3rd degree Burglary. The arrest followed an incident early Thursday morning in the Town of Afton, when Proffitt allegedly forced his way into a residence on Cathy Lane. Proffitt was arraigned in the Town of Afton Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail in lieu of $75,000 cash bail pending court action in the Town of Afton Court at a later date.

Federal Prosecutors have added more charges against former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver Thursday, claiming that he illegally did favors for an investor; the indictment said Silver did not pay a fee to the adviser for access to the high-yield private instruments and did not disclose to the adviser the source of the funds. Silver has been free on bail since his arrest earlier this year, on charges that he exploited his power in Albany to collect $4 million in kickbacks, he resigned as Speaker but still hold his seat in the assembly representing his lower Manhattan district.

State Police at Deposit arrested 24-year-old Dylan Borne of Johnson City, for 2nd degree Burglary & Criminal Sexual Act. The arrest occurred after Troopers responded to a complaint in the Town of Windsor where Borne allegedly entered a residence without permission & committed a criminal sexual act. Borne was arraigned in the Town of Windsor Court and remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.

Volunteer fire departments across New York State will open their doors to local residents this weekend as part of the 5th annual “ Recruit New York” program. Fire department volunteers will conduct tours of their facilities, demonstrate firefighting techniques, and allow visitors to try on turnout gear. Members will discuss the requirements and rewards that come with being a volunteer firefighter, & help interested visitors through the process of joining their local Department. Last year, over 500 fire departments across the state participated.

Governor Cuomo announced that implementation of green policies at state agencies have saved New York taxpayers $13 million while substantially reducing paper use and waste, and increasing recycling. Key achievements by state agencies include a 40% reduction in copy paper purchased by state agencies since 2011 has saved taxpayers $13 million dollars, a 53% reduction in waste generated since 2008; & the widespread adoption of non-chemical means of controlling pests on turf and ornamental plantings. The New York State Assembly has launched its new paperless legislation system, which converts hard copy legislation to digital form on tablets. The measure allows for digital copies of legislation, instead of hard copy, to suffice on a state legislator’s desk, thereby cutting down on the paper waste at the Capitol. The members still can request hard copies, about 10,167 bills were introduced in the 2013-14 legislative year

Governor Cuomo announced the completion of another round of crude oil tank car and rail inspections, where they uncovered 84 defects, including 3 critical safety defects & 2 hazardous materials violations that required immediate corrective action. The inspections were the latest part of the Governor’s push to protect New Yorkers from the potential dangers associated with the transport of crude oil by freight rail companies. State and federal teams examined 855 crude oil tank cars and approximately 30 miles of track in these inspections. The Increased inspections followed a series of out-of-state disasters involving the transport of crude oil from the Bakken oil fields in North Dakota.

United Way of Delaware & Otsego Counties has been awarded Federal Funds through FEMA Under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program “Set Aside” Funds. Otsego County has been chosen to receive $24,410 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county and related administrative fees with Opportunities for Otsego, Catholic Charities, Salvation Army, The Lord’s Table, St. Mary’s food pantry and First Presbyterian Church of Worcester, participating, they provided 104,435 meals, 164 nights of lodging and assist 23 households with emergency utilities.

State Police & the Village of Hancock Police Department are investigating an armed robbery, which occurred Tuesday at approximately 10:00 PM. A male suspect entered the Mirabito Gas Station at 450 West Main Street, in Hancock, displaying what appeared to be a handgun and demanded money. The male suspect was wearing a mask, left on foot with an undetermined amount of cash. The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 5’ 6”, medium build, with short dark colored hair and facial hair, wearing a dark gray hooded sweatshirt, gray sweatpants and a knit hat with a brim. Anyone with information should call State Police at 775-1241.

State Police CNET Team executed a search warrant at 9 Rutherford Street in the City of Binghamton, where they Seized 107 bags of heroin, 3 grams of loose heroin, oxycontin pills, marihuana, scales, packaging materials, a stolen loaded .22 caliber pistol, a stun gun and 2 sets of body armor. State Police arrested 20 year old Christopher Frederick of Binghamton, for various drug & weapons charges, also arrested was 19 year old Denise Shuler of Binghamton, for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, both were arraigned & were remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.

The State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for March. The state’s private sector job count increased to 7,753,700, which is an all-time high, the state’s unemployment rate fell from to 5.7% in March, and the lowest level since August 2008. Locally, The Greater Binghamton area rate was at 6.3% in March down 7/10’s from March of last year.

The office of State Senator Tom Libous announced that the senator has had successful back surgery. During Senator Libous’ recovery from recent surgery to repair a detached screw in his spine, it was discovered that additional follow-up surgery was needed. That surgery took place on Monday, & Senator Libous is in contact with Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, his Senate staff and voters in his district by phone and email. Libous will return to work in Albany when cleared by his doctor.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli announced that audits identified a total of $513 million in improper Medicaid payments and untapped revenue opportunities over a 4-year period. Auditors identified another $361 million in questionable transactions that will require further review and actions to prevent overpayments or recover costs. The state expects to transition the majority of Medicaid spending, services, and enrollees to managed care by 2016, but recent audits by DiNapoli’s office highlight the need for more effective oversight of managed care organizations

The Sidney Police Department arrested 19-year-old Michael Fairbairn of Sidney early Sunday morning for 3rd degree, Petty Larceny and Criminal Mischief; Fairbairn was arrested during a Burglary at the American Legion at 22 Union Street in the village of Sidney. Fairbairn was apprehended hiding near the scene with items taken during the burglary. Fairbairn was arraigned at Sidney Village Court and remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail. Sidney Police was assisted by State Police and Delaware County Sheriff’s Office.

Inclement weather forced the postponement of tonight’s game between the Binghamton Mets and Erie SeaWolves at NYSEG Stadium. The contest will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Tuesday, August 25th. Ticket holders for tongiht’s game can redeem them for a ticket of equal or lesser value to any future 2015 regular season home game, excluding July 4th.

A.M. NEWS WEDNESDAY 4-22-15

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an ATV accident Tuesday afternoon in Hamden. An 11 year old Hamden boy, was traveling south on Stoddard Hollow Road when he lost control of the vehicle while attempting to make a right hand turn off of the roadway, causing the ATV to overturn in a ditch, pinning the operator. The operator’s 9-year-old brother was a passenger on the ATV; he was not injured and ran to home to call 911. Both were children were wearing helmets at the time of the accident. The ATV operator was airlifted to Albany Medical Center by LifeNet helicopter with head injuries, deputies believe excessive speed was a factor.

P.M. NEWS TUESDAY 4-21-15

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office reported this afternoon that 19-year-old Harlie Christian of Morris has been found. Earlier today the Sheriff’s department reported that Christian left her parents residence in the Town of Morris Sunday, 19 at about 12:00 Noon, to return to Herkimer County Community College where she attends classes. The Sheriff’s Office reported at about 1:00 this afternoon that Christian was interviewed & is safe, and the case is now considered closed.

State Police also reported today that a Teenager missing since April 3rd has been found safe. 17-year-old Hanna Tatro of Massena has been located, Tatro was reported missing as a possible runaway, Police are not releasing specific details at this time, but they do consier the case to be closed..

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office is participating in the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee’s educational campaign of “The Empty Chair.” The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee launched “The Empty Chair” educational campaign, which symbolizes the missing high school senior on graduation day. The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office will be putting out educational material this week in an effort to educate teen drivers and combat teen motor vehicle accidents. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will offer Greek yogurt as a meat alternative in school lunches nationwide this fall, after a successful 12-state test with Chobani and The Upstate Niagara Cooperative of Buffalo. The USDA decided to make Greek yogurt a permanent part of its national school lunch program after a 12 state pilot program concluded that the Greek Yogurt has ample nutritional value, and that there’s sufficient demand from school children. Chobani became the #1 seller of Greek Yogurt; they recorded more than $1 billion in annual sales and they employ more than 2,000 people.
