The Department of Justice announced the results of Operation Restore Justice, which resulted in the rescue of 115 children and the arrests of 205 offenders in the nationwide crackdown. The coordinated effort was executed over the course of five days by all 55 FBI field offices. Locally, Jerry Butler of Walton was charged, he is accused of using a social messaging application to request and receive sexually explicit content from a minor, he is believed to be involved in the “764” network, whose members seek to corrupt and exploit vulnerable populations, including minors, He faces at least 15 years in prison. The Department urges the public to report suspected exploitation of a child through their tip-line at 1-800-CALL-FBI, at tips.fbi.gov, or by calling your local FBI field office.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 33 year old Jeffrey Fuller of Decatur, for Criminal Obstruction of Breathing or Blood Circulation, after Otsego County Deputies responded to a residence in the Town of Decatur for a physical domestic incident. Following an investigation, Fuller was arrested, processed and was held for Centralized Arraignment, he will face court action on the charge shortly.

The Chenango County Historical Society & the Chenango County Historian’s Office are collaborating on “An America250 Conversation.” and they will be seeking public input on how the County should celebrate America’s 250th anniversary next year, Society Executive Director Jessica Moquin explains:

The Oneonta Common Council voted 5 to 3 against the proposal to sell 27 Market Street to Rehabilitation Support Services for a mixed use facility to be built on the lot on Market Street. Plans had called for a multi story facility to house businesses & apartments, with some housing units dedicated to RSS clients, they provide community-based mental health and substance abuse services.

Whitney Bachanas appeared in Otsego County Court & pleaded guilty to Aggravated Cruelty to Animals, she was charged after law enforcement found a dog, a turkey, a chicken & a quail dead on her property in Milford, she pleaded guilty in a plea bargain arrangement, she will be sentenced in June to 100 days of house arrest with an electronic monitor. She will be prohibited from owning or possessing animals and will likely face fines.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 19 year old Johnny Mackinsdixon and 24 year old Bless King of Brooklyn, On April 27th, Colchester Police attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle fled the scene, but the operator was unable to maintain control of the vehicle, striking the curb, sidewalk and retaining wall of the bridge. Both the driver and passenger fled the accident scene on foot & were apprehended. The vehicle had been reported stolen out of Brooklyn NY on April 26, it had stolen Washington State License plates. Mackinsdixon was charged with Obstruction of Governmental Administration, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, speeding, as well as several other lesser charges, King was charged with Obstructing Governmental Administration. Both were turned over to the Delaware County Correctional Facility where they were remanded on $10,000 cash Bail.

Rite Aid Announced today that they are filing for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection, they plan to close and /or sell the remaining 179 stores in New York State. Officials blamed the bad economy, tariffs and over $1,000,000 in liabilities as the reason for the closings, layoffs had already begun at numerous locations. Locally, Rite Aid operates a store on Chestnut Street in Oneonta.

United Parcel Service will reportedly cut nearly 20,000 jobs by the end of this year in addition to closing close to 40% of their locations nationwide. The company laid off about 12,000 employees in 2024, due to a drop in both international and domestic shipping volume.

A.M. NEWS Tuesday 5-6-25

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested several people on a variety of charges following a Burglary in progress report at a residence in the town of Pittsfield Sunday. Arrested were 24 year old Autumn Knapp of Morris, 50 year old Richard Suarez of Morris, 49 year old Travis Wilson of Pittsfield, and 41 year old Danielle Bemis of Pittsfield. It was reported that 4 subjects were inside of a house actively removing property, A Sheriff’s Office sergeant arrived on scene and located the defendants, additional deputies arrived on scene, the defendants were transported to the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await Centralized Arraignment. Travis Wilson and Danielle Bemis were remanded on $5,000 cash or $10,000 surety bond, Autumn Knapp was remanded on $15,000 cash or $30,000 surety bond, and Richard Suarez was remanded without bail. The investigation is on-going and additional charges are pending.

The Oneonta Common Council meeting will be held at the Oneonta High School this evening, they are expected to discuss the possible sale of the 27 Market Street, To Rehabilitation Support Services. The site formerly housed the Oneonta Sales Company, which was finally taken down after being abandoned for years, the city bought the property in 2020. Rehabilitation Support Services provides community-based mental health and substance abuse services, they propose to build a $25 million multi-story structure with residential and commercial space, with some housing units dedicated to RSS clients, a petition has been circulated denouncing the plan. The meeting begins at 6:00 PM tonight.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 42 year old Justin Ingalls of Hartwick following a warrant investigation. Ingalls was located by Deputies attempting to enter the Otsego County Jail for the purpose of retrieving bail money, he was taken into custody on 6 active bench warrants issued by various courts within Otsego County, he was ordered to be held at the jail on $17,000 dollars cash bail.

Attorneys general from 17 states , including New York, are challenging an executive order President Trump signed, pausing approvals, permits and loans for all wind energy projects both onshore and offshore. The lawsuit claims that Trump doesn’t have the authority to unilaterally shut down the permitting process, and he’s jeopardizing development of a power source critical to the states’ economic vitality, energy mix, public health and climate goals, they are asking a federal judge to declare the order unlawful and stop federal agencies from implementing it.

Former New York State Corrections Officer Christopher Walrath pleaded guilty to 1st degree manslaughter, for his role in the December beating death of inmate Robert Brooks at the Marcy Correctional facility in Oneida County. Walrath is expected to be sentenced to 15 years in prison as part of the Plea Bargain deal, he was previously facing a 2nd degree murder charge before accepting the plea bargain deal.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s office announced that arrest of 42 year old Lloyd Hunt Jr of Sidney on an Arrest Warrant issued by the Town of Davenport Court. Deputies had received information that Hunt was near his residence in the Village of Sidney, Deputies & Sidney Village Police were able to take Hunt into custody without incident. Hunt was transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility to await Centralized Arrangement Court.

19 year old Jerry Butler of Walton was arrested for sexual exploitation of a child, he is facing at least 15 years in federal prison, if convicted. Butler appeared in US District court Friday, he is accused of using social media to request sexually explicit content from a minor. The minor allegedly made the content for Butler III and sent it to him using a social media messaging app. Butler was detained pending a hearing scheduled today.

The Oxford Fire Department responded to a barn fire on Friday night at about 8:30 PM on State Route 12, Coventry, Greene and Norwich fire departments assisted, all of the animals were evacuated.

The U.S. Department of Justice filed a legal challenge to New York’s Climate Change Superfund Act last week, in the Southern District Federal Court to block the law, which charges oil and gas companies $75 billion for past greenhouse gas emissions to be paid by 2050, The act requires any company that released over a billion tons of greenhouse gases from 2000 through 2024 to pay for their share of total emissions.

State Police are investigating a domestic dispute that occurred Thursday afternoon in the town of Masonville. 22 year old Seth Ostrander of Unadilla is being held for arraigment on a variety of felony charges, the investigation is continuing and more details are expected to be released shortly.

32 year old Michael Vogel of Delhi was sentenced this week in Delaware County Court to a 2-year prison sentence for Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance. On May 23, 2024, Delaware County Investigators determined that Vogel was selling fentanyl, in October, a Delaware County Grand Jury returned an indictment & an arrest warrant was issued for Vogel’s arrest. Vogel pleaded guilty & admitted possessing fentanyl with the intent to sell it.

President Trump is working to dismantle the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau which is a federal agency that prevents Americans from getting scammed by big banks and corporations and responds to millions of consumer complaints each year. Trump has attempted to fire nearly 90% of the agency’s staff, including all but one employee of the Office of Financial Protection of Older Americans. Local government sales tax collections totaled $5.8 billion in the first quarter of 2025, an increase of 3.2% compared to the same quarter last year, according to a report released by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Chenango County saw the highest quarterly growth at 11.8%, followed by Delaware County at 10.4%, & Broome County was 4th at 9.8%. 14 of 18 of the cities outside of New York City that impose their own sales tax experienced year-over-year growth in the first quarter. Norwich had the largest increase at 14.5%.

Broome County Sheriff’s Strategic Response Group located 42 year old Christopher Knapp of Binghamton, in Binghamton this week. Knapp was wanted on 4 separate warrants, on charges of Burglary, a Probation Violation, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Failure to Appear. Knapp was observed working on a motorcycle, Upon seeing law enforcement, Knapp ran inside and attempted to escape, struggling briefly with deputies before being successfully taken into custody, he was additionally charged with Obstruction of Governmental Administration, he was processed before being transferred to Johnson City Police to answer for his warrant in that municipality.

5 more corrections officers appeared in Oneida County Court on Wednesday to discuss plea offers related to the beating death of inmate Robert Brooks, at Marcy Correctional Facility in December, none of the 5 reached a decision regarding their offers. The delay was due to all officer’s attorneys receiving new discovery information from the prosecution, necessitating more time for their clients to consider options. Nicholas Anzalone and Christopher Walrath, both charged with murder, are scheduled to return to court on May 14 and 19. David Walters, Michael Mashaw, and Michael Fisher, charged with manslaughter, will also be back in court on May 14.

State Police announced that 61-year-old Michael Crandall from Oxford, succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the crash between his motorcycle & a school bus Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Chenango County routes 35 & 32 in the town of Oxford. Crandall was taken to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, the school bus had 8 children on board, a 12-year-old child was evaluated at Chenango Memorial Hospital, no other children reported injuries. The unidentified school bus drive & an aid were evaluated at the scene and did not need further treatment, The crash remains under investigation.

19-year-old Darius Palmer of Binghamton was sentenced in Broome County Court Wednesday for the killing of 41 year old Tyrell Norris on September 30th of 2024 in Binghamton. Palmer was arrested in the Bronx in October on an arrest warrant for a separate crime, he was returned to Broome County & was found guilty for 1st degree Manslaughter and on a separate Assault charge , he was also ordered to serve 1 year in Broome County Jail, followed by 5 years of post-release supervision on the assault charge.

The Oneonta Common Council approved spending $230,000 on reconstruction of the Market and South Main streets intersection to fix damage from a water main break last month. The council held a special meeting Tuesday & voted unanimously to allocate the funding.

5 corrections officers appeared in Oneida County Court on Tuesday to discuss plea offers related to the beating death of Robert Brooks, an inmate at Marcy Correctional Facility in December. Earlier this month, a judge informed some of the officers who requested additional time to deliberate that he would need a decision from them this week, none of the officers had reached a conclusion. Attorneys representing the officers cited recently receiving discovery information from the prosecution that morning, which required additional review, they were ordered to return to Oneida County Court on May 13th.

23 year old Dekwaun Hicks of Binghamton was sentenced in Broome County Court to 6 years in State Prison, followed by 3 years of post-release supervision, for Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon. The charges stem from a June 26, 2024, incident, when members of the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force and the Binghamton Police Department conducted a vehicle stop based on information that Hicks was in possession of a firearm, they recovered a loaded 9mm handgun, ammunition and a quantity of methamphetamine pills. Hicks received additional jail time as he was arrested on a drug charge while out on bail.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded Saturday to a burglary complaint at the Big Dipper BBQ 2 restaurant in Conklin, a Review of security footage showed 4 individuals breaking in causing several thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to the door and air conditioning unit of the businesses. Several tubs of ice cream and bottles of soda were taken by the suspects Officers arrested 20 year old Tracy Bryce of Conklin for Criminal Mischief & Burglary, 20 year old Jordan Wilson of for Criminal Mischief and Burglary, 2 juveniles were also charged. Bryce and Wilson were processed and arraigned, the juveniles were processed and arraigned before being released to their families.

24 year old Michael Bush of Sidney was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on April 23rd in the Town of North Norwich. Bush was arrested after a brief pursuit through 3 townships on a motorcycle, passing vehicles in a no-passing zone and failing to stop at a stop sign. Deputies initiated a traffic stop and Bush failed to comply, his motorcycle malfunctioned in Sherburne & he was taken into custody, he was found to possess methamphetamine. Bush was charged with Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Reckless Endangerment, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle among other charges, he was transported to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office & he was released on appearance tickets to appear in the Town of North Norwich Court at a later date.

Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith announced the indictments against 3 people in the case of a disabled child who consumed methamphetamine, where 3 adults were present. Indicted were 70 year old Sam Tessora, 29 year old Eric Ferguson & 39 year old Tanya Carson, all from Masonville for Reckless Endangerment & Endangering the Welfare of an Incompetent or Disabled Child, the child was airlifted to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse for treatment after he was found unresponsive. The indictment accuses the defendants of acting with depraved indifference to human life which created a grave risk to the child, on March 7th in Masonville, all 3 could face up to 7 years in prison, they face arraignment on the indictment charges shortly.

Governor Hochul announced an agreement with legislative leaders on the State Budget, which includes tax breaks for working class families, reduces the Payroll Mobility Tax for small businesses and fixes the discovery laws to reduce the number of cases being thrown out on technicalities:

The Bainbridge Girl Scout are holding another free Community giveaway with the drop off of gently used items to be held on Friday at the Greenlawn Elementary School from 3:30-6:30, and the giveaway of those items will be on Saturday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon.

Chenango Sheriff Office arrested 47 year old Andrew Harris of Plymouth for Obstructing Fire Fighting Operations, Reckless Endangerment of Property, Unlawful Imprisonment. Harris was arrested after deputies determined he would not let fire department personnel extinguish a house fire in the Town of Plymouth. Harris was found standing in his driveway in close proximity to a fully involved house fire, he aggressive yelled at emergency personnel and failed to obey lawful orders, Deputies also determined that Harris committed crimes the night before against his girlfriend during a domestic incident, he was arraigned & released on his own recognizance.

Chenango Sheriff office arrested 38 year old Nicholas Partis of Cortland for Grand Larceny, after a complaint was filed by a local business. Deputies were dispatched to a local business, they obtained a license plate number and vehicle description. While deputies were reviewing camera footage, the Village of Oxford Police Department located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. Deputies responded to Oxford and positively identified Partis, he was arrested & was released on an appearance ticket and is due to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.

A Citizen Preparedness Training Event will be held today at 6:00 PM in Margaretville at the Town Hall, hosted by Delaware County Public Health, with representatives from the New York National Guard & The State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services. Isabella Ziolkowski of Delaware County Public Health explains:

This event is free and open to the public, Ziolkowski said that they are planning to do additional training events in Walton & Sidney as soon as possible.

Binghamton Police confirmed that 31-year-old Connor Hickey was found dead in the Dorchester Park lake in Whitney Point. On Friday, detectives responded to Dorchester Park for a reported deceased man in the lake, they confirmed the man was Hickey, who was reported missing since March 15th.

Former Major League Manager Buck Showalter, who managed both the Yankees & the Mets, will be the was announced as the keynote speaker at the 10th Greater Binghamton Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class today, The Hall of Fame ceremony is set for April 28 at the Double Tree Hotel in Binghamton, starting at 6:30 this evening.
