Fire investigators have determined that it was a lightning strike that hit the Sidney Federal Credit Union Main branch in Sidney. Vice President of Marketing Keith May told WCDO News that he came to work there at about 6:00 This morning, & the Sidney Fire Department was summoned about an hour later:

May said that the Sidney branch had only minimal damage, teh clean up is underway & the State of the art insulation in the new building smoldered for several hours since the lightning strike at about 10:00 Sunday night, traditional insulation would have likely burst into flames quicker.

A State Department of Corrections employee has been charged with 2nd degree attempted murder in Norwich. Norwich Police arrested 33-year-old Wayne Spratley Sunday morning, following a call about a person displaying a weapon in the area of a North Broad Street business. A Norwich Police Officer responded and heard gunshots near Lackawanna Avenue, where the officer found the victim who appeared to be shot in the stomach, the victim was taken to University Hospital in Syracuse & was listed in critical condition. Spratley was arraigned in Chenango County Court and was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $50,000 bail, additional charges against Spratley are pending & the investigation is ongoing. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested and charged a Delhi man with introducing dangerous prison contraband into the facility. On Saturday night Delaware County Correctional Facility intake officers conducting a search of a new inmate found Brayan Thompson of Delhi was in possession of a concealed belt buckle knife while being booked into the jail, on an unrelated Burglary charge, he was subsequently charged with Promoting Prison Contraband. Thompson was arraigned on the new charge, & was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $2000 cash bail; he remains incarcerated pending future court appearances.

On Friday, July 17th, Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 48 year old Wade Egan of Lake Grove New York for 1 count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon & 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, failure to Keep Right, Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated, Failure to Obey a Police Officer, and several violations. The arrests were made as a result of a pursuit and subsequent traffic stop on State Highway 10 in the Town of Walton. Egan was arraigned in the Town of Walton Court and was released to reappear at a later date.

The Town of Unadilla crews are repaving Butternut Road this week. Repaving will be between 7:00 AM & 4:30 PM each day and the road will be closed at those times.

On Saturday Night, State Police, the Chenango Bridge Fire Department and Broome County Dive Team were called to investigate a missing swimmer at a quarry located at 1564 St Rte 12 in the town of Chenango. The swimmer was located by the State Police Scuba Team and identified as 20 year old Robert Burts of Binghamton, An autopsy is scheduled for today at Wilson Hospital. The investigation is continuing.

NYSEG Reported about 450 customers were without power early this morning, due to the storms this weekend. Crews are continuing to work to restore power as quickly as possible.

The Oneonta Department of Public Service will be replacing a broken water valve today at the intersection to Ravine parkway & Ravine Park North. Resident in that area will experience a temporary water outage, when service is restores, the water may be cloudy, and the water should clear up in a short time if the water is allowed to run. Oneonta city residents are being reminded of the curbside residential pickup of brush & yard waste. Through October, Wards 1 through 4 will have their yard waste picked up on the 2nd Monday of each month, Wards 5 to 8 will have theirs picked up on the 3rd Monday of the month. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies are investigating the burglary of a residence and garage located on Basin Clove Road in the Town of Hamden that occurred between approximately May 1st and July 11th. Stolen from the residence and garage were shotguns, various lawn & garden equipment, a woodstove, a flat screen television and several hand tools. Deputies are asking anyone that may have information about this burglary, or the possible location of the stolen property, to contact them at 746-2336, Extension 381.

Governor Cuomo is calling for stronger Health Department regulations to combat the sale of synthetic marijuana in New York State, following a dramatic increase in hospital visits and poison control center calls. The sale and possession of dozens of types of synthetic marijuana and bath salts were banned by the Department of Health at the urging of Governor Cuomo in August 2012. These new regulations will expand the existing list of banned substances to include new chemical compounds that drug producers have begun to make since 2012. Residents who are aware of locations where these products are being manufactured, sold, or distributed, please call the Synthetic Drug Hotline at 1-888-99-SALTS.

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection will conduct a meeting Saturday, about water diversions and releases from the Cannonsville Reservoir. The meeting will be at 10:00 AM Saturday at the Hancock Central School, a DEP representative will provide information about the repairs and the status of the reservoir. The meeting is open to the public.

Officials are investigating yesterday afternoon’s collapse of the Baldwin Street parking garage at Wilson Hospital in Johnson City. A number of cars were destroyed, but no one was found in any of the lower level vehicles. Work crews with cranes removed top-level vehicles overnight & the investigation is ongoing.

State Police responded to a call for a person in the water at the Whitney Point dam at Dorchester Lake. Trooper Donald Atkinson entered the water and swam to the dam’s outflow tunnels and located the 14-year-old victim, who was unable to swim out of tunnel due to the strong current. A Good Samaritan entered the water, throwing Trooper Atkinson a rope, Trooper Lawrence Gurdo entered the water, and assisted Trooper Atkinson, the victim grabbed a rope & was pulled to safety. The victim was transported to Lourdes Hospital for treatment.

Parking Garage Collapse – Johnson City – 7/16/15

BREAKING NEWS: There has been a parking garage collapse reported at the Baldwin St. Johnson City parking garage across from Wilson Hospital. A part of the second level of the parking garage ramp has collapsed into the first floor of the garage. Unknown if anyone is trapped at this time. *UPDATE* Early indications are that there was NOT anyone in the garage or in any parked vehicle at the time of the collapse! The Greater Chenango Cares event has responded to 614 patients, providing over $330,000 in services in the first 3 days of the event in Norwich. 181 medical personnel from various Military organizations are in Norwich training fro responses to various emergencies that they may be called to, Colonel Gregory Kolb is the Commanding officer of the 48th combat Support Hospital, & is overseeing this event:

The State’s private sector job count climbed by 24,200, to over 7.8 Million according to preliminary figures released by the State Department of Labor. Over the past 2 months, the State has added 67,800 private sector jobs. In June the State’s unemployment rate decreased from 5.7% to 5.5%.

A Town of Sherburne resident was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Reckless Endangerment, Unlawful Manufacture & disposal of Methamphetamine, Tampering with Physical Evidence, plus other drug related charges. 26-year-old John Quinn was charged following a failure to comply pursuit, where he is accused of fleeing police & throwing several items from the vehicle, which were later recovered. Quinn was arraigned in the Town of Sherburne Court and was held on $50,000 cash bail pending action in the Town of Sherburne Court at a later date.

Governor Cuomo has more than $12.6 million in his campaign account; according to campaign finance filings released Wednesday. Cuomo raised $5 million in contributions and made another $195,000 from interest and contributions from the state Democratic Party. Cuomo has not commented on future campaigns on the state or federal level.

Delaware County Deputies conducted a traffic stop on State Hwy 10 in the Town of Delhi, 30 year old John Perez of Grayson, Louisiana charged with DWI, speed unreasonable and prudent, inadequate exhaust, no turn signal and a fractured windshield. Perez will reappear in the Town of Delhi Court at a later date.

The Sidney Village Police Department reminds village residents to lock vehicles & not leave valuables in the vehicle. There have been a string of larcenies from vehicles that were left unlocked. Anyone with information is asked to contact the village police art 561-2301.

The village of Bainbridge is experiencing water issues, where village residents may have outages or low water pressure. The Department of Public Works is working to repair the situation and is looking to complete those repairs as quickly as possible.

Former Tennessee Congressional Candidate Robert Doggart pleaded Not Guilty Tuesday in federal court, for allegedly planning to attack Islamberg in the town of Hancock. Doggart is accused of planning murder & arson at the Muslim hamlet & recruiting others by Facebook & by phone to carry out the plan. Doggart was arrested by the FBI in April, & could face 10 years in prison if convicted.

A Meeting will be held tonight in Oneonta where Federal Energy Regulatory Commission staff will conduct a scoping meeting for the Northeast Energy Direct Project, from the Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company. U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced today $560,694 in federal funding for the City of Norwich Fire Department. The federal funding will enable the department to hire three new, full-time firefighters, allowing the City of Norwich to increase the number of firefighters on duty from a four-person shift to a five-person shift.

Oneonta Police Department responded to Luther Street for a reported violation of an order of protection. 32-year-old Keion Pierre of Oneonta is accused of violating an order of protection, Pierre fled the scene on foot with the officer giving chase, but he was taken into custody after a brief struggle. Pierre was found to be in possession of 24 Baggies of heroin, 3.9 grams of crack cocaine, plus marihuana and drug paraphernalia. Pierre was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Contempt, Resisting Arrest, Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia & Unlawful Possession of Marihuana, he was held pending arraignment at the City of Oneonta Court.

Governor Cuomo’s favorability rating dropped, according to the latest Siena College survey released today. 49% have a favorable view of Cuomo, down from 53% in May and 60% in January. 44% had an unfavorable view of Cuomo, 39% said Cuomo is doing an “excellent” or “good” job, 40% said “fair” and 20% said “poor.

the Otsego County solid waste department announced the dates & locations for this year’s household Hazardous Waste collection days. the 1st event will be on September 11that the Unadilla town highway building, the second will be at the Meadows Complex in Cooperstown on September 12th. U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer reported that he will fight legislation that would allow for longer trailer trucks on the nation’s highways. Schumer opposes a provision in a Senate transportation bill would authorize twin 33-foot trailers. Current rules allow for trucks to pull two trailers that are each 28 feet long. Schumer said that trucks would stretch out to be the size of an eight-story building & would be a safety risk for other motorists and a place too much weight on bridges and roads.
