Binghamton Police Department & the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force conducted 2 search warrants in Binghamton, investigators found a loaded handgun, plus fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, $301 from drug proceeds, and items used for packaging and weighing narcotics. Police arrested Michael McCary of Binghamton, Rashee Shuler from Binghamton, Elizabeth Reid of Hallstead, Pennsylvania, Amanda Goodwin from Castle Creek, Arijana Makic of Johnson City, Christopher Johnson of Binghamton & George Smith of Manhattan, all face court action shortly.

State Police responded to a head-on crash Friday afternoon at about 4:20 PM on State Highway 28 in Delhi. 71-year-old Roger Hadley of Andes was operating a pick-up truck, he crossed over the double yellow line into on-coming traffic, he struck an SUV head-on & was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV, State Trooper Anna Aulino, was off duty and traveling home in her personal vehicle after completing her shift, she sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Albany Medical Center, Her injuries appear to be non-life threatening, Trooper Aulino graduated from the State Police Academy in 2023 and is assigned to Troop C. The State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene to conduct a full reconstruction of the crash, The Office of the Attorney General is also investigating the crash.

State Police arrested 35 year old David Keener of Whitney Point, for 3rd degree Grand Larceny. Troopers accused Keener of using a victim’s business account at a local hardware store and making several unauthorized purchases, totaling more than $5800. Keener was located by Troopers on July 10 and arrested, he was processed & turned over to the Broome County Jail for Arraignment.

Chenango Memorial Hospital announced that area students will have an opportunity to explore careers in healthcare through their “Career Days camp”, The program is a two-day, hands-on career exploration program for students entering grades 8 through 12. This year’s Career Days camp will take place Thursday, August 14 and Friday, August 15. The program is free of charge, but space is limited. State Police arrested 32 year old Joshua Shurtleff of Castle Creek for 2nd degree Assault & Criminal Contempt, after Troopers were dispatched to a report of an order of protection violation, they determined that Shurtleff was violating a full stay away order of protection, when Troopers attempted to place him under arrest, he resisted arrest and began fighting with Troopers. Shurtleff was ultimately placed in handcuffs, he was checked out at a local hospital then processed & was transported to the Broome County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.

U.S. Senators Schumer and Gillibrand announced that over $21 Million dollars in federal funding has been allocated to upgrade airport facilities and equipment at 16 airports across the State. This federal funding was awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program, locally, the Greater Binghamton Airport will receive $181,174 to Reconstruct 51,000 square feet of existing terminal building and replaces the electrical system and associated lighting.

State Police arrested 43 Year old Delbert Dewey of Sherburne for Arson & Criminal Mischief, On July 5th, Troopers responded to a report of a vehicle on fire in a driveway on Classic Street in Sherburne. The investigation revealed that Dewey intentionally started a fire inside the vehicle after having a disagreement earlier in the day with the residents on Classic Street. Dewey was later arrested and was arraigned and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $15,000 cash bail, $30,000 bond, pending future court action.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 36 year old Joseph Clary of Oneonta, for Sex Offender Failure to Update Change of Address. Clary was released from the Elmira Correctional Facility, he was to report to the Otsego County Department of Social Services to secure temporary housing which would provide an address that would be listed on his State registry. After 10 days, Clary failed to notify or report to the DSS, the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office or his parole officer, he was located Tuesday in Oneonta by parole officers and taken in to custody, he was taken to the Otsego County Correctional Facility for arraignment. .

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 39 year old Jacqueline Barkman of Oneonta for Grand Larceny, Burglary, Criminal Possession Controlled Substance & Criminal Trespass, following a larceny investigation at Walmart in the Town of Oneonta. Barkman was found to have removed over $1000 worth of merchandise without paying, she was also found to be in possession of a controlled substance, she was issued an appearance ticket to appear at a later date at Oneonta Town Court.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 58 year old Michael Mollo of Worcester, for DWI, Obstructing Governmental Administration, Reckless Driving, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, and Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Motor Vehicle Accident, as well as a host of other related charges, following an investigation into a property damage accident in the Town of Worcester. Mollo was found to be intoxicated and arrested, he was processed and released and is set to appear in court at a later date.

Governor Kathy Hochul today directed flags on all State government buildings to be flown at half-staff in honor of West Colesville Fire Chief James Sitek, who passed away on July 6 in the line of duty, while responding to a fire in Conklin. An Audit by the State Comptroller’s Office found that the state Department of Health is not adequately overseeing adult care facilities, they failed to conduct timely inspections and lacked documentation to show critical problems were corrected. 18% of allegations had no evidence they were investigated. a few did not have evidence of any plans for an investigation at all. There were 534 adult care facilities operating in New York, serving 37,547 residents. The Audit can be found at osc.ny.gov.

The Binghamton Police Department have released the names of the 2 people who died in a 3 car wreck Monday afternoon at the Court Street construction site in the City’s East End. The deceased operator of a Sedan was 49 year old Safwan Aziz of Binghamton, the deceased operator of the SUV was 71 year old Rafael Cuadra of Susquehanna, Pennsylvania , the unidentified driver of the 3rd vehicle suffered only minor injuries.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that more than $36 million has been awarded to 48 projects across New York State through the County Infrastructure Grant Program. Locally, The City of Norwich was awarded $1 Million Dollars to build 20 new housing units on Plymouth Street to serve residents 62 years old and older, as well as individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at-risk of homelessness. Funding for this project will allow for infrastructure expansions required to service these homes, including a new sanitary sewer, water supply system, and storm-water system, as well as streets, curbs, and sidewalks.

The Town of New Berlin announced a ROAD CLOSURE today, on Homesville Hill Road. Motorists in the area are advised to use County 34 as an alternate route. The repairs will go on between 6:00 am. to 3:00 pm. today. Also, Unadilla officials announced that Kilkenny Street from Clifton Street to Village line will be closed from 6:15 am to approximately 2:00 pm today.

State Police today announced that Troopers issued a total of 10,497 tickets statewide during the 4th of July STOP-DWI enforcement campaign, which ran from Thursday, July 3rd to Sunday, July 6th. Troopers arrested 210 people for DWI and investigated 716 crashes, including five fatal motor vehicle crashes, Troopers issued thousands of tickets for other traffic violations, including over 3500 for speeding, over 1000 for seat belt use, and 301 for failure to obey the Move Over Law. IN troop c there were 327 ticketed for speeding, 12 for distracted driving, 67 for violating seat belt laws & 46 for violating the move over law.

State Police arrested 26 year old Calvin Verny-Rasmussen of Cortland for crimes involving children. Verny-Rasmussen’s arrest stems from a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children indicating that child sexual abuse material was being shared online. The Troop C Computer Crimes Unit and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation further revealed that in addition to promoting and possessing images consistent with child sexual exploitation, Verny-Rasmussen inappropriately touched a child under the age of 11, he was charged with Sexual Abuse, Promoting Sexual Performance of a Child, Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Verny-Rasmussen was processed and turned over to the Cortland County Jail on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.

Neal Morrison of Vestal pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Weapon in Broome County Court in exchange for a sentence of 8 years in State Prison, followed by 5 years of Post Release Supervision. Morrison also pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Firearm, for which he will receive a sentence of 1½ to 3 years in State Prison. The charges stem from 2 separate incidents, on April 21, Vestal officers encountered Morrison exhibiting signs of erratic behavior, he was taken into custody under Mental Health Law for evaluation. While securing his residence, officers observed a shotgun under a blanket along with a glass smoking device and a pellet gun. In May, Endicott Police Department responded to an abandoned residence, Morrison was found sleeping behind a couch, and there was an active warrant for his arrest. A search revealed a firearm in a holster, Morrison will be sentenced on October 9th in Broome County Court.

On July 5, 2025, members of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to State Highway 80 in the Town of Sherburne for an unresponsive male on the shoulder of the road. Deputies located a deceased male who was later identified as 59-year-old Jeffery Maxson of Sherburne, who was walking on State Highway 80 Friday evening when he was struck by a vehicle that did not stop. The Detectives Division identified the vehicle with nearby security cameras, it was located and seized for further investigation. The investigation is still ongoing and anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office at 607-334-2000.

Binghamton Police, State Police & Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a head on crash in Binghamton yesterday at about 4:30 PM, where 2 people died and 1 person was injured in a 3 car crash in the Court Street construction zone. The drivers of a sedan and an SUV were pronounced dead at the scene, the driver of the 3rd vehicle was taken to Wilson Hospital, Police reported that it appeared a driver tried to pass a vehicle in the construction zone where no passing is permitted, causing the fatal crash. The investigation is continuing, the names of the deceased were not released pending family notification.

State Police conducted an Underage Drinking Detail in Chenango and Otsego Counties. All of the businesses except one were in compliance, which was Ye Olde Shanty on South Canal Street in Oxford, where a 73-year-old employee was issued an appearance ticket for Prohibited Sale of Alcohol to a Person Under 21. 10 other businesses were in compliance in Norwich, Oxford, Greene, Smithville Flats and Morris.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 56 year old Allan Pettit of Walton following an incident in the Town of Walton. On July 2nd, Deputies responded to a complaint of a man pointing a firearm at others in the Town of Walton, it was determined that Pettit had pointed a BB gun at the victims and threatened them with bodily harm. Deputies arrested and charged Pettit for 2 counts of Menacing, he was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to return to the Walton Town Court at a later date.

State Police were dispatched on July 4th to Ridge Runner Road in Hancock for a report of an accident with fireworks. A preliminary investigation at the scene indicates that 2 males were on a pontoon boat on Somerset Lake setting off fireworks when numerous fireworks apparently ignited at the same time causing an explosion. One male was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and the other male succumbed to his injuries on the scene.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 27 year old Emily Tabler of Bronx, for Driving While Intoxicated, Operating a Motor Vehicle with a BAC of .08% or higher, Failure to keep right & Driving on the shoulder, following a property damage accident in the Town of Exeter. Deputies on patrol and came upon a motor vehicle accident on State Highway 28. Tabler was found to be intoxicated & was processed and released on an Appearance Tickets for Exeter Town Court at a later date.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal hit and run car vs. pedestrian accident on July 4, at about 8:45 pm on State Highway 80 near the Rogers Conservation Center in the Town of Sherburne. The Sheriff’s Office announced this morning that the vehicle and driver have been located. The investigation is still ongoing. West Colesville Fire Chief James Sitek suffered a medical emergency while responding to the fire, Friday Morning in Conklin. Sitek was transported to Wilson Hospital where he was pronounced deceased, he served as the West Colesville Fire Chief for 3 years. The Case is currently under investigation by the Broome County Fire Investigation Office, the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, and the Broome County Sheriff’s Office.

Over 2,000 people attended the 3rd annual Southern Tier Music Fest in Sidney at the Airport Saturday. About 400 walk up tickets were purchased due to the perfect weather conditions, there was 7 hours of music featuring headliner Uncle Kracker, plus a Queen & an AC/DC tribute band, Alyssa Crosby from “The Voice” and the 9-1-1 Band, the day ended with a Fireworks Display, Organizer Ed Curley told WCDO News that the even was deemed a complete success.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded recently to a report of a trespass in progress in the Village of Walton, with a physical altercation had occurred while in the presence of a child, and personal property belonging to multiple individuals had been damaged throughout the incident. Deputies arrested and charged both 34-year-old Charles Boecke and 27-year-old Siara Mettler for Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Criminal Mischief, they were both processed and released on appearance tickets returnable to the Village of Walton court at a later date.

State Police arrested 52 year old Lawrence Slater of Norwich, after a Chenango County Grand Jury indictment. Slater was operating a vehicle on April 12th and crashed into an on-coming vehicle driven by 62 year old Steven Biviano of Oxford, who was pronounced dead at the scene, on State Highway 12 in the town of Oxford. Slater was operating the vehicle with a BAC of .18%, he was charged with Aggravated Vehicular Homicide, Manslaughter, Vehicular Manslaughter, Felony DWI & Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated, he was was arraigned in Chenango County Supreme Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $25,000 cash bail, or $50,000 bond.

47 year old Steven Caiati of Starlight, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court to 1 count of Tampering with Physical Evidence and 1 count of Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, for driving under the influence of methamphetamine, he attempted to conceal his stash of methamphetamine from police. Caiati will be required to pay a fine of $1,270 while also having his driver’s license suspended for 6 months, he was sentenced to time served (approximately 90 days) and extradited to Pennsylvania where his parole will be violated as a result of this felony conviction.

62 year old Keith Ward of the Bronx pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court to Grand Larceny, Ward cashed a forged check at an area bank, the case was presented to the Delaware County Grand Jury and obtained an indictment, he failed to appear for arraignment and the Delaware County Court issued a warrant. Ward was taken into custody on the warrant and was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility without bail. Judge Hubbard sentenced Ward to 1.5 to 3 years in state prison, Ward will likely receive additional prison time as a result of violating parole.

The Otsego County Health Department reported that a Bat has tested positive for Rabies in the town of Morris. The Nate Lull Golf Tournament will be held Sunday in Franklin, to raise money for the Nate Lull Scholarship program, which handed out $18,000 in scholarships to area seniors recently, and look to give away more next year, Nate commented on the WCDO Morning show earlier this week about the Tournament:

The Oneonta Hometown July 4th Parade will be held on Friday July 4th, with staging on Market Street. State Police and local law enforcement agencies have increased patrols to crack down on reckless and impaired driving during the July 4th holiday weekend. Law enforcement officers from across the state will conduct sobriety checkpoints and target aggressive driving during the busiest travel weekend of the summer, the campaign will run through Sunday, July 6th.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 32 year old Joseph Amaro of Cooperstown & 43 Year Old Cricket Miller of Oxford, for charges related to a recent vehicle pursuit following an attempted traffic stop in Norwich. Amaro drove erratically, and Miller threw items at a patrol vehicle, causing several thousand dollars’ worth of damage. The pursuit ended in Ilion in Herkimer County, after Amaro’s vehicle struck a uniformed member of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, causing injuries. Amaro was charged with Obstruction, Conspiracy, Resisting Arrest, 2nd degree Assault Criminal Mischief, Unlawful Fleeing & Reckless Endangerment, as well as 74 Vehicle and Traffic Law citations, Miller was charged with Conspiracy, Criminal Mischief, Reckless Endangerment, Obstruction & Resisting Arrest, plus 8 citations for violating Vehicle & Traffic laws. Both were arraigned & remanded to the Chenango County Jail pending future court action.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 45 year old Bobbi-Jo Nye of Oneonta for Grand Larceny, following an investigation into a complaint that occurred in the Town of Oneonta where over $1000 of items were removed from the Oneonta Home Depot without payment. Nye was arrested, processed, and released on an appearance ticket returnable to the Oneonta Town Court at a later date.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in locating 42 year old James Clark Jr. who is wanted on a Warrant for 2nd degree Assault by the Town of Meredith Court. Nicholas Vitale pleaded guilty on Tuesday in Oneida County Court, to attempted offering a false instrument for filing, Vitale acknowledged submitting a false form, in an attempt to stop any investigation by State Police, State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, and the Attorney General’s Office, into the death of Messiah Nantwi at the Midstate Correctional Facility in March. Vitale was also sentenced on Tuesday to a $750 fine, $200 State surcharge and $50 DNA fee. He also had to agree to resign from his job.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that starting this fall through SUNY and CUNY Reconnect, New York State will cover tuition, fees, books and supplies for community college students ages 25-55 pursuing select associate degrees in high-demand occupations, such as Advanced manufacturing, Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Engineering, Technology, Nursing and health fields, Green and renewable energy and education.
