The Annual Sherburne Pageant of Bands will be held this weekend, at the Sherburne High School.  Pageant competitions will be held tonight & tomorrow, the Parade will begin Saturday at 1:00 PM on Route 12 in downtown Sherburne.

This weekend is the MX Rewind Weekend at the Unadilla Valley Sports Center on State Route 8, in New Berlin.  MX Rewind is a full weekend of vintage racing and has become the largest vintage event of its kind in the nation.  Racing begins on Friday with AHRMA cross-country racing and moves into motocross racing on Saturday and Sunday. Greater Chenango Cares is once again coming to Norwich to provide services for families in need. Greater Chenango Cares is a Department of Defense Innovative Readiness Training event. It gives joint training opportunities to reservists to increase their deployment readiness while also providing free medical, dental, vision and veterinary services to the community.  This year’s Chenango Cares will be held at Norwich High School from July 11th through the 20th.   The Chenango United Way is looking for volunteers for the event; those interested can call 334-8815.

Norwich city officials are monitoring the situation at 33 Mitchell Street, after part of a wall at the building fell to the ground Wednesday.  All tenants were evacuated & city officials blocked off the intersection of Mitchell & State Street while they try to determine of the 1855 building can be safely repaired, or needs to be razed.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee had to name 8 champions yesterday, after the 8 winners continued to spell words correctly round after round after round.  Organizers said that they ran out of difficult words to give to the last 8, Scripps officials gave up and declared them all co-champions, each will win the $50,000 grand prize.  Melodie Loya of Bainbridge made it to the final day for the 3rd straight year, before being stumped during an afternoon round Thursday.

Governor Cuomo today announced the application window is now open for round one of the Grow-NY food and agriculture competition. The competition is focused on growing an enduring food and agriculture innovation cluster in New York’s Finger Lakes, Central New York and Southern Tier regions. Today is World No Tobacco Day, where people are trying to get the word out about the dangers of Tobacco use & the growing Concern  of children getting addicted to Nicotine through fruit flavored E-Cigarettes Like Juul.  Linda Wegner of Advancing Tobacco free Communities of Delaware, Otsego & Schoharie Counties said that they are hoping the state & the Federal Government do something soon:

Currently, the state wide rate of smoking is about 14%, but Delaware County is much higher at 24%, there has also been a 160% increase in E-Cigarette usage among teens in the last 2 years, each Juul cartridge contains the same amount of nicotine as an entire pack of traditional cigarettes.

A.O. Fox Hospital is offering a program this summer for individuals interested in becoming junior volunteers, to offer a helping hand to hospitalized patients, nursing home residents, and staff in a multitude of capacities.  Training for accepted applicants is scheduled for Monday, July 1st  from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 PM in Fox Hospital’s Education Department.  Applicants must be at least 14 years of age & applications are available in the guidance offices of area high schools,  all applications are due by June 18th . 14 year old Melodie Loya of Bainbridge advanced to the finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in National Harbor, Maryland Wednesday.   Loya is one of 50 finalists competing for the prize money of about $50,000.  The final round concludes this evening from 8:30 to 10:00 PM.

Residents had to evacuate an apartment building at Mitchell & State Streets in Norwich this morning, after a section of the outside wall fell off.  No injuries were reported, engineers will inspect the building to see if it will need to be torn down.

The Delaware County Department of Public Works will be closing Fitch’s Covered Bridge in the Town of Delhi on Saturday, from 9:00 am to 11:00 AM for the annual Covered Bridge Run.  County Route 18 will be closed to through traffic from the Village Line to Fitch’s Bridge during that time frame as well. Local traffic and Emergency Vehicles will be permitted.

The Sidney Central School District students were not allowed to leave the campus this morning following the reports of a bear near the campus.  Department of Environmental conservation officers were called in.  The District was notified by local law enforcement that the bear was no longer in the immediate of the vicinity of the school & the Sidney District has resumed all normal activities this afternoon.

Otsego County Sheriff Richard Devlin reports the Sheriff’s Office along with the Susquehanna SPCA is investigating an animal cruelty situation in the Town of Maryland.  Deputies located approximately two dozen dead cattle in a barn and another 30 head in poor condition late Tuesday afternoon.  This is an on going investigation.

State Police arrested 48 year old Lisa Stevens of Glen Aubrey for 2nd degree Grand Larceny.  A several month-long investigation revealed that Stevens collected over $50,000 from several victims promising to make travel arrangements that were not made.  Victims of the scam called the State Police & Stevens was arraigned at Broome County Central Arraignment and Processing.   The case is continuing, Investigators believe there may be more residents in the area that have not yet come forward, and they should Contact State Police at 775-1452 if you believe you may have been a victim.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run to raise awareness and support for Special Olympics New York will pass through Broome County today as the Olympics Torch makes its way around New York State leading up to the Special Olympics New York Summer Games, in Dutchess County June 14-15.  More than 75 members of local law enforcement will participate starting at 2:00pm at Binghamton University, Peace Quad.   The Torch Run will conclude at Tully’s on the Vestal Pkwy East, with a reception for participants.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office’s Criminal Investigation Division arrested 32-year-old Joseph Clark on 23 counts of Criminal Contempt, it is alleged that while he was an Inmate at the Delaware County Correctional Facility, Clark violated the terms of an Order of Protection issued by the Town of Oneonta Court by contacting a protected victim.  Clark is scheduled to appear in the Town of Delhi Court on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 to answer these charges.

14 year old Melodie Loya of Bainbridge made it through the 2nd round of the 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee Tuesday in the state of Maryland.  47 of the 567 contestants were eliminated Tuesday; Loya is participating in the Scripps Spelling Bee for the 3rd straight year.

Delaware County Public Health and Friends of Recovery- Delaware Otsego, in conjunction with Sidney Memorial Library and Andes Public Library, are offering free Narcan trainings to the public. The training is open to everyone. State Lawmakers are continuing to re-word legislation before the end of the 2019 session that may legalize recreational Marijuana in New York State.  The New York State Sheriff’s Association opposes that idea, Delaware County Sheriff Craig Dumond comments:

An amended marijuana legalization bill was introduced on Friday to echo Governor Cuomo’s original proposal, which would include the forming of the Office of Cannabis Management to regulate commercial and medical marijuana.

26-year-old Haylery Rodriguez of Johnson City was issued tickets Friday for Unlicensed Operator and 7 improper restraint tickets.  State Police responded to the report of a several children rising unrestrained in a vehicle leaving the Tioga Downs.  A trooper stopped the vehicle on State Route 17 & discovered 12 people in a vehicle that seats 7.  7 children ranging from ages 3 to 11 that were not in child seats, booster seats or even belted in the vehicle & Rodriguez was driving with only a learner’s permit and did not have a licensed driver in the vehicle. The trooper stayed with the vehicle for 2 1/2 hours to ensure everyone in the vehicle was picked up by a licensed driver with the proper safety equipment.

The Pennsylvania-New York Joint Interstate Bridge Commission will conduct its annual meeting today at the Binghamton State Office Building, 44 Hawley Street. The meeting will be held on the 18th floor and scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM, Representatives from the State DOT and the Pennsylvania DOT will discuss matters related to the 10 bridges crossing the Delaware River to Pike and Wayne counties in Pennsylvania.  The meeting is open to the public.

The 57th General Clinton Canoe regatta was held over the Memorial Day Weekend, with over 1000 paddlers from 22 states & 5 Canadian Provinces participating.

An amended marijuana legalization bill was introduced on Friday by lawmakers in Albany, which more closely echoes what Governor Cuomo wanted in the bill earlier this year.  The bill includes the Office of Cannabis Management to regulate commercial and medical marijuana; it would also expunge the records of those who have committed marijuana-based offenses in the past.   Opponents to Marijuana legalization site potential issues with traffic safety and increased links to mental illnesses such as Schizophrenia & violence.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies charged 40-year-old Jeffrey Bosket of Tompkins with 2 counts of harboring a dangerous dog in violation of Agriculture and Markets Law. The charge follows an investigation where an individual was allegedly bitten by 2 dogs owned by Bosket in the Town of Tompkins. Bosket was issued tickets and was scheduled to appear before the Town of Tompkins Court at a later date to answer for the charges.

State Senator Fred Akshar released a new Community Voice Survey on a proposal to end religious and any other non-medical exemptions for vaccination for children attending school in New York State.  All 50 states require that students be vaccinated for diseases like measles, mumps, chicken pox and polio among many others, all states allow exemptions for medical reasons, but 47 (including New York) allow exemptions for religious reasons.   The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that measles was eradicated in 2000; however 940 measles cases were reported nationwide this year, with more than half of those reported in New York City & Rockland County.   Akshar is asking his constituents to weigh in on Senate bill S.2994 which would repeal all non-medical exemptions from vaccination requirements for children; the survey is available at Akshar.NYSenate.Gov.

New York State will not be funding a housing development with 64 units in Oneonta’ 6th Ward.  The RSS development announced their plans last year, with residents speaking out about the plans to have some people in the development recovering from substance abuse.  Governor Cuomo recently announced that 6 organizations in The Southern Tier would receive $21.3 million in tax credits and low-interest loans from the State Homes & Community Renewal’s 2018 Unified Funding applications; the Oneonta RSS project was not included.

Attorney General Letitia James announced a settlement with Oneonta Elks, over their wrongful use of over $480,000 charitable assets from the estate of a benefactor whose last will and testament directed that the funds be used to help the needs of children, people with disabilities, and the elderly.   The Oneonta Elks are required to repay those funds, after the investigation determined that the Oneonta Elks repeatedly appropriated and expended almost $170,000 to pay for capital improvements to its lodge building and property, as well as covering general operating expenses, rather than for the intended purposes.

The Appellate Division of state Supreme Court has declared that farm workers have the same right to unionize as all other workers in New York State.  State labor laws excluded farm workers from collective bargaining rights, that was ruled unconstitutional Thursday.  The New York Farm Bureau said that they will appeal to the state’s highest court, the Court of Appeals.

Filmmaker Lori Bailey grew up in the Adirondacks & in Oneonta, she directed the film “Garrow” about Adirondack Serial Killer Robert Garrow, who was once the target of the biggest manhunt in state history when he was killed in 1973; Bailey told WCDO News that her film will be shown this weekend in Oneonta:

The 92nd Scripps National Spelling Bee starting Sunday through next week & for the 3rd year in a row, Bainbridge resident Melodie Loya will be participating.    Loya placed 18th and 25th in her two previous years of national competition, and made it to the final 41of last year’s 516 spellers.  The Scripps national Spelling Bee will be held Sunday through next Friday at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in Fort Washington, Maryland.

The STOP-DWI enforcement period runs through Monday night, Governor Cuomo announced that temporary lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on New York State highways will be suspended through Tuesday morning at 6:00 AM, to accommodate increased travel throughout Memorial Day weekend.

Binghamton Police arrested 19-year-old Jalil Butts of Binghamton for 2nd-degree attempted murder, in connection with the shooting of a woman in a car on St. Patrick’s Day on Chenango Street. 19-year-old Antonio Jones of Taftville, Connecticut was arrested last month in connection with the same shooting, he was charged with attempted murder and assault.

A jury found 26 year old Danielle Agosto of Endicott guilty Thursday for fracturing the skull of a toddler in her care.  Agosto was found guilty of 2nd-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child, she was returned to jail & will be sentenced June 21.

NYSEG Is looking to increase their rates with State Approval, After Their rate plan with the State expired in April.   The rate increase NYSEG would be about 23.7%, which would add over $10.00 a month to a typical monthly electric bill.  If approved, the new rate would go into effect in May 2020.

Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond honored 14-year-old Rachel Trimbell of Walton with the 1st annual “Super Star” award.   Trimbell was riding a Walton Central School bus on the afternoon of March 27, when she observed a kindergarten student choking on a piece of candy. Trimbell performed the Heimlich maneuver on the student which ultimately saved the life of the young child.

The Delaware County Board of Supervisors recently established a new Public Defenders office.  The Board appointed Sidney Attorney Joe Ermeti to head up the office at Wednesday’s meeting in Delhi, Ermeti is scheduled to start on August 1st.

 The Broome County Sheriff’s Department arrested 59 year old Pete Loher of Marathon on a charge of Cruelty to Animals.  Loher is accused of fatally his neighbor’s dog with a .22 caliber rifle; Loher was processed & was released on an appearance ticket for the town of Triangle Court at a later date.

The Disabled American Vets Mobile Service Office will be at the Sidney VFW at 133 West Main Street until 4:00 PM this afternoon.  Counselors are on hand to assist Vets with any issues they may have.

State Police released an update regarding the incident in the town of Springfield that left 1 man dead & an Otsego county Deputy injured.  The deceased suspect has been identified as 23 year old Matthew All, of Sharon Springs, on Tuesday, state troopers attempted to stop All for allegedly threatening someone with a knife, he took off & police pursued him, until he apparently crashed head on into the parked deputy’s vehicle near routes 20 & 80 in the town of Springfield. The unidentified Deputy was transported to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, with serious but non-life threatening injuries, he was coherent at the scene. All was pronounced dead at the scene by Otsego County Coroner Michael Fox.  The investigation is on-going.

The House of Representatives passed Freshman Congressman Anthony Brindisi’s 1st bill today. Brindisi’s “Support for Suicide Prevention Coordinators Act” to help prevent veteran suicide, sailed through the House and is on its way to the Senate.  The bipartisan bill requires the Comptroller General of the United States to conduct an assessment of the responsibilities, workload, and vacancy rates of the Department of Veterans Affairs Suicide Prevention Coordinators.

The State Labor Department of released preliminary local area unemployment rates for April. The statewide Unemployment rate was 3.9% in April; the Southern Tier region was at a combined 4.0% even.

Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond announced a new Defibrillator Fundraiser, as new Defibrillator pads and supplies are needed for AED units carried by patrols and units within the County Correctional Facility.  The last fundraising drive for AED units was in 2013.  Sheriff DuMond said that this fundraiser is being sponsored by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office for use by their personnel, more information is available at 832-5860,  donations can be made payable by check to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office at 280 Phoebe Lane, Suite One, Delhi, NY 13753 and designate “Defibrillator Fund” on the reference line.

A traveling memorial exhibit, honoring those who have lost their lives to opioid addiction is on display in Albany this week.   “Prescribed to Death,” is a traveling wall of 22,000 small pills carved with the faces of Americans who have died of an opioid overdose, it is being displayed at the base of The Egg in Albany on the concourse level of the Empire State Plaza.  The memorial is free and open to the public tomorrow from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  Those who are unable to visit can still share their loved one’s story and a photo by using the council’s interactive online map, at memorial.nsc.org/index.html.

1 person is dead and an Otsego County Sheriff’s Deputy was injured after a pursuit in the village of Richfield Springs and the town of Springfield Tuesday Afternoon.  State Police approached a subject in a vehicle who had been accused of threatening a victim with a knife, the suspect fled from troopers and a pursuit ensued traveling east on State Route 20.  As the subject approached the intersection of State Routes 20 and 80, an Otsego County Sheriff’s Deputy was stationary in his vehicle, monitoring the pursuit with his emergency lights activated; the suspect crossed into oncoming traffic and struck the Deputy head-on.  The Deputy was transported to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY with serious but non-life threating injuries, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by Otsego County Corner Michael Fox.  The investigation is on-going.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 52-year-old Tina Noble of Franklin, on charges of obstructing government administration & unlawful imprisonment, she is accused of unlawfully and forcefully detaining a member of the Delaware County Child Protective Services Unit within her home in an attempt to prevent a public servant from performing an official function. Noble was later released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear at Franklin Town Court at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies conducted a Traffic Safety Checkpoint on State Highway 10 in the Town of Hamden recently.  Deputies issued 16 traffic violations for offenses ranging from driving while ability impaired by drugs, operating with a driver’s view obstruction, operating with prohibited studded snow tires, uninspected motor vehicle, speeding, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, operating an unregistered motorcycle, and operating with an unregistered trailer. All defendants were released on tickets and are scheduled to appear at Hamden Town Court at a later date to answer the charges. Deputies were assisted by members of the State Police.

 New York Attorney General Letitia James 16 State Attorneys General are urging the U.S. Department of Labor not to adopt its proposal which reverses federal overtime protections for workers.    Under the proposed rule, over 8 million workers, including over 600,000 workers in New York, would lose overtime protections.    The proposed rule would change the white-collar exemptions under the Fair Labor Standards Act, which currently exempts from overtime protections for those in executive, administrative, and professional “white-collar” positions. In order for an employer to classify an employee as exempt, the employee must be paid a fixed salary, be paid a minimum specified salary and Have a job with duties that are executive, administrative, or professional in nature.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 43-year-old Jesus Bracero of Syracuse, Saturday night for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle & speeding, following traffic stop on State Highway 17 in the Town of Colchester.   Bracero was arraigned in the Colchester Town Court and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on 500 dollar cash bail or 1000 dollar secured bond. Bracero is scheduled to re-appear in the Town of Colchester Court at a later date to answer for these charges.

New York is poised to make undetectable guns, including 3D-printed guns, illegal in New York.  The bill passed the Senate earlier this month and breezed through the Democratic-led Assembly on Monday. Now it will head to Governor Cuomo’s desk for his review, he is expected to sign it into law.  The measure would ban the manufacture, sale, transport and possession of undetectable firearms, in order to crack down on gun violence.

19 year old Hunter Speenburgh pleaded guilty to 2nd degree assault & was sentenced to 1 year in jail on Monday in Chenango County Court.  Speenburgh along with Landon Cummings & Brendan Gager were arrested in connection with an assault of a victim who was left unconscious, with a fractured eye socket and some teeth knocked out in October of last year, after the victim allegedly attempted to buy marijuana from Jade Orlando of Norwich.

Binghamton Police are looking for 2 men wanted in connection with a South Side Home Invasion Sunday evening, left one woman injured. Police stated that the 2 men posed as utility workers, they forced their way into the apartment at 80 Pennsylvania Avenue. The suspects were described as black, in their early to mid-twenties. They were between five feet, seven-inches and five feet, ten inches tall. Both wore all black clothing, orange-colored construction safety vests and white construction helmets. Their faces were covered with masks.  Anyone with information is asked to contact Binghamton Police at 772-7080.
