Governor Cuomo announced that lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on State highways are suspended until 6:00 AM Monday morning to accommodate travelers during the busy Independence Day holiday weekend.   Some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs.  Motorists are also urged to follow the state’s Move Over Law, which requires motorists to slow down and safely move over for law enforcement vehicles, fire trucks, ambulances, tow trucks and construction or maintenance vehicles that are stopped along the side of the road.

Governor Cuomo today announced more than 300,000 New Yorkers have received training through the Citizen Preparedness Corps, since the program started in 2014.  the Citizen’s Preparedness Corps provides the tools and resources necessary for preparing New Yorkers for any type of disaster so they respond accordingly and recover as quickly as possible to pre-disaster conditions.  Trainings are conducted by the New York National Guard, working with experts from the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services’ Office of Emergency Management and Office of Fire Prevention and Control. Volunteers from the American Red Cross also teach courses.

Sam Nader’s 100th Birthday and 50th 1969 Oneonta Yankees Reunion, will be Hosted by Oneonta Yankees on July 12th at 6:00 PM & July 13th at 10:00 AM.  The event will be held at Damaschke Field in Oneonta; Sam Nader was a former co-owner of the former Oneonta Yankees minor league baseball team.

State Police will increase patrols, conduct sobriety checkpoints and target reckless and aggressive driving statewide through Friday, to insure the safety of motorists over the 4th of July holiday.  Troop C Commanding Officer Major Brian Shortall said that State Police will also rigorously enforce the “Move Over Law”

Troopers will also be looking for distracted motorists who are using their phones and other electronic devices while behind the wheel.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in trying to find 35 year old Gregory Collins, who was last seen on June 28 in the town of Middlefield.  Collins was wearing a black baseball cap, grey jacket, black sweatpants with black and white sneakers, anyone with information is asked to call the Otsego County Sheriff’s Department at 547-4273.

The Board of Colorscape Chenango announced that Peter Yarrow has been uninvited to perform at their September 8th Music Festival in Norwich.   Yarrow was jailed in 1970 for indecent liberties with a 14-year-old girl.  The Board announced that they were unfamiliar with Yarrow’s arrest in 1969, and short jail term in 1970, they hope to announce a replacement performer shortly.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum announced that 57 Past Hall of Fame members will return to Cooperstown on July 19th through the 22nd, for the induction of the Hall of Fame Class of 2019. This year’s inductees are Harold Baines, Edgar Martinez, Mike Mussina, Mariano Rivera and Lee Smith, this year’s class also includes the late Roy Halladay, they will all be inducted on Sunday, July 21st at the Clark Sports Center complex beginning at 1:30 p.m.

The Annual 4th of July Festival in Oneonta will be filled with a variety of activities tomorrow.  The Color Run will begin at 9:00 AM, the parade will begin at 12:00 Noon along Main Street, There will be free admission to the Oneonta Outlaws Baseball Game at 6:00 PM & the Fireworks display at 9:30 PM. The majority of the activities will be held in Neahwa Park.

State Police arrested 55 year old Frank Kovacs of Laurens for felony of Aggravated DWI with Child 15 or Under as Passenger.  Kovacs responded to State Police in Oneonta to discuss another matter with troopers, he appeared to be intoxicated & had 2 children, ages 9 and 11 in the vehicle with him.  Kovacs was arrested; the children were turned over to a sober third party.  Kovacs was arraigned in the town of Oneonta court where he was released on his own recognizance.  He is scheduled to reappear on July 25, 2019.

State Police arrested 46 year old Kerie Lake of Hillcrest Saturday for Aggravated DWI, Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident, Moving From Lane Unsafely and Imprudent Speed.  Lake is accused of leaving the scene of an accident, she was found in the city of Binghamton, her BAC was .20%.  She was released on appearance tickets to the town of Binghamton court on July 11th. 70 year old Leo Lake of Binghamton responded to pick up Kerie Lake, he was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, with a reportable B.A.C. of .15%.  He was released on appearance tickets to the town of Kirkwood court on July 11th. .

3 Bronx Men were indicted in Otsego County Court for allegedly grabbing an Oneonta woman off the street and threw her into a van before demanding money from her at an ATM.  Frankie Liberata-Garcie,  Erick Tavares, and James Semidey were arrested in May after Oneonta Police received a report from neighbors on Watkins Avenue that claim they saw two men grab a woman off the street and thrown into a white cargo van.  All 3 were indicted on charges of kidnapping and robbery, and were remanded to the Otsego County Jail.

Gilbertsville Mayor Mark Muller has issued a proclamation that the village will observe the 100th anniversary of the American Legion following the annual parade 4th of July parade. WCDO NEWS TUESDAY 7-2-19

State Police arrested 40 year old Jennifer Longwell of Afton for Overdriving, Torturing and Injuring Animals; Failure to Provide Proper Sustenance.   Troopers received a report of malnourished and injured horses that were on being boarded on Longwell’s property on County Route 17 in the town of Bainbridge.  The owner of the horses contacted state police in May after they took their horses to a veterinarian and removed several other horses.  A trooper observed that several horses appeared malnourished and had sores on their bodies.  After an investigation, Longwell was arrested and subsequently released on appearance tickets to the town of Bainbridge court on July 25, 2019.

State Police are looking for a man accused of damaging an ATM on North Canal Street in the village of Oxford, on June 8th.   The suspect is described as a heavy set white male wearing a gray sweatshirt, black and gray shorts, had a Dallas Cowboys hat on backwards and has a tattoo on his left calf.  Anyone with information is asked to call the State Police at 334-3296.

The Delaware County Chamber of Commerce will honor businesses from every corner of the county at its 2019 Annual Business Awards ceremony on July 17 at 6:00 PM at Bird Song Farm on state Highway 10 in Delhi. The Chenango County Department of Public Works announced that starting July 8th, Crews will begin bridge rehabilitation work on 2 structures on County Road 32, in the Town of Norwich.  The work on these projects will last into the fall; they will maintain two way traffic at each bridge structure; however the traffic pattern at each structure shall change as the projects progress.    The Contractor shall install concrete barriers, signage and other channelizing devices to assist in guiding the traveling public through these active work zones at these bridge structures.    Questions and concerns can be directed to Shawn Fry at 337-1710.

Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond is sending 18 children to the New York State Sheriffs’ Institute Summer Camp at Keuka Lake in the Finger Lakes Region for a week of wholesome summer fun.  The camp will accommodate over 900 boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 12 from across New York State this summer. The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office is attempting to locate a man that was reported missing from his Lawton Hill Road, Town of Sidney residence on Thursday morning, June 27th.  Deputies are attempting to locate 50 year-old Byron Furman may be traveling on foot and may be in need of medication.  Furman was last known to be wearing light tan shorts and a light gray t-shirt.  He is described as being approximately 5’11” tall, weighing approximately 250 pounds and has gray hair and brown eyes.  Deputies are asking anyone that may have information to contact the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office at 832-5555.

The Oneonta Common Council will hold their next meeting this evening at Oneonta City Hall.  The council will view the locally made documentary “A Slice Of Hope” regarding Sal’s Pizza in Oneonta hiring those who have dealt Addiction & subsequent recovery.  Jennifer Grigoli of Sal’s Pizza will receive a special reward from Mayor Herzig for her efforts.  Tonight’s meeting begins at 7:00 PM.

State Police arrested 43 year old Arnold Carson of Oneonta, for DWI, Unlawful Possession of Marihuana and traffic tickets.  A trooper was dispatched to County Highway 48 in the town of Otego for a disabled vehicle.  The trooper located the vehicle and Carson who told them he had run out of gas.  Troopers also observed that Carson appeared to be intoxicated, with a BAC of .14%.  He was processed and later released on appearance tickets to the town of Otego Court.

State Police arrested 27 year old Bryant Knapp of Sidney for Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated, after a trooper was dispatched to an accident on State Route 7 in Unadilla.  An investigation revealed that Knapp made a wide right turn from Route 7 to Route 357 when he struck another vehicle head-on that was on State Route 357.  Two occupants of the other vehicle were taken to Wilson Hospital, and a third was taken to Bassett for complaint of pain.  Knapp had a reportable B.A.C of .24%.  He was processed and arraigned in the town of Unadilla court.

State Police arrested 20 year old Bradley Dixon Jr., of Madison for DWI & Unlawful Possession of Marijuana, after Troopers observed Dixon’s vehicle partially off the roadway on County Route 36 in the town of Guilford, Dixon was sleeping in the driver’s seat, with the car running.   Dixon was issued appearance tickets to the town of Guilford court on Tuesday.

The A.O. Fox Hospital Foundation hosted its 20th Annual Golf Classic at the Oneonta Country Club on June 24, bringing 27 donors and 140 golfers to raise funds for a new ultrasound machine in Fox’s department of surgical services; they raised more than $50,000 this year.

State Police arrested 30 year old Amber Snell of Bainbridge for Aggravated DWI with Child Less than 15 as Passenger plus 4 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child & several other violations.   Snell was observed by a Trooper on County Route 32 in the town of Oxford driving with 4 unrestrained children in the back seat, she was arrested, & the children were turned over to a sober 3rd party.  Snell was arraigned in the town of Oxford court & was released on her own recognizance and will reappear on July 8th.

State Police responded to the Depot Street fishing access at the fork of the Chenango and Tioughnioga Rivers Thursday evening, following the report stated that 3 kayakers were in distress, 2 kayakers were able to get out of the river on their own but one kayaker was unconscious after his kayak overturned.  The kayaker has been identified as 72 year old Dennis Healey of Chenango Forks, CPR was attempted, but Healey was pronounced dead.  The investigation revealed that Healey was kayaking with a group of people, Healey capsized and became entangled in debris, and an autopsy revealed that Healey likely suffered a cardiac medical emergency.

State Police and local law enforcement agencies will increase patrols to crack down on drunk and drugged driving and other traffic infractions during the 4th of July holiday, through Friday, July 5th.  State Troopers will conduct sobriety checkpoints and target reckless and aggressive driving statewide in an effort to keep New York highways safe during one of the busiest summer holidays for travel.  Last year, the State Police issued nearly 10,500 vehicle and traffic tickets during the 4th of July weekend. Troopers arrested 216 people for DWI and investigated 165 crashes, which resulted in four fatalities and 244 injuries.

Chenango Sheriff’s department arrested 50 year old Randolph Browning of Virginia for Criminal Sexual Act, Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child, Possessing an Obscene Sexual Performance by a Child, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.  Detectives arrested Browning Jr. following a complaint of an older man looking for a room at a local Motel to bring a female victim under the age of 16. Detectives found that Browning had sexual contact with a child less than 16 years old and also possessed child pornography.  Browning is currently being held at the Chenango County Correctional Facility on other charges and is awaiting his court date.

High School Graduations get underway tonight for several area schools.  Windsor’s Commencement will begin at 6:30 PM, Afton, Franklin, Deposit, Laurens, Milford, Morris & Charlotte Valley will hold theirs at 7:00 PM.  High School graduations continue into the weekend.  Saturday morning at 10:00 AM, seniors from Sidney, Greene, Delaware Academy, Harpursville & Norwich will have their graduation ceremonies begin at 10:00 AM, Oneonta seniors commencement exercises will begin at 10:45 AM, Oxford Academy at 11:00 AM & Bainbridge Guilford on Saturday Night at 7:00 PM.  On Sunday, seniors from Edmeston will graduate beginning at 1:00 PM.

3 of the 4 Rochester Area suspects who were arrested earlier this year for plotting to attack Islamberg in Delaware County pleaded guilty to conspiracy 7 weapons charges today in Monroe County.   Vincent Vetromile, Brian Colaneri & Andrew Crysel all pleaded guilty for their roles in hatching the plot to kill residents of the Muslims of America enclave in the town of Hancock. 16 year old Nicholas Pheilshifter was also arrested in January, his case is pending.

Delaware County Sherriff’s Deputies arrested 29 year old Christina Belcher of Masonville for Grand Larceny, Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument,  Forgery & Making a False Written Statement. Belcher is accused of forging the check of another person without permission.    Belcher was arraigned and was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Faculty on $5,000 cash bail & will return to the Town of Delhi Court at a later date for further court proceedings.

State Police arrested a Mount Upton twice in a 30 hour period on June 22nd & 23rd.   42 year old Karlton Tompkins was charged on June 22nd, after he made a U-Turn to avoid a Police DWI Road Check on State Route 7 in Unadilla, he was apprehended along with 41 year old Jason Lowe & 25 year old Erica Marble of Sidney on drug charges,   On June 23rd, Tompkins tried to flee a trooper in his vehicle, which he crashed on Loomis Road in the town of Afton, he fled on foot, followed by 2 troopers & a police Dog, a scuffle ensued with 1 trooper injured and Tompkins bitten by the Police dog.  Tompkins was charged with Reckless Endangerment, Reckless Driving, Driving While Ability Impaired, Resisting Arrest and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.   Tompkins was treated at Tri Town Hospital in Sidney; he was arraigned & was sent to the Chenango County Jail on Cash Bail pending court action.

Chenango County Sheriff deputies arrested a Virginia resident on a Fugitive from Justice Warrant.   Sheriff’s Detectives and Deputies located and arrested Randolph Browning Jr. following a complaint being filed with the Sheriff’s Office. Browning was found to have an active warrant in the State of Virginia for Embezzlement; he was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail.

State Police are investigating the death of a kayaker in Chenango Forks.   State Police at Binghamton were dispatched to the Chenango River at approximately 6:03 p.m.; the body of a male kayaker was located shortly thereafter.  The kayaker was with a group of people and his kayak capsized.  The cause of death is undetermined at this time and the name is being withheld pending family notification.   More details will be released later today.

The State Office of Victim Services announced changes that will make it easier for individuals to receive help from the agency for the cost of burying victims of crime. A new law allows for Individuals who paid or incurred burial costs for a crime victim may be eligible for up to $6,000 from the Office of Victim Services for funeral services, burial plot, the deceased’s burial clothes, clergy fees, transportation costs for the deceased, obituaries, head stone, flowers, death certificates, and church fees for religious services and flowers.  More information is available at ovs.ny.gov or 1-800-247-8035.

New York State could soon become the first state to require ingredient labels on feminine hygiene products.  The measure passed in both houses of the Legislature last week and now awaits action by Governor Cuomo; it would require packaging labels listing the materials used in tampons and pads.

A.O. Fox Hospital announced the appointment of Jeff Emhof as the new administrator of Fox Nursing Home.  Emhof has been a licensed nursing home administrator in New York State for more than 11 years, having most recently worked at the Cooperstown Center.   Emhof will oversee strategic planning initiatives and operations of the 130-bed skilled nursing facility connected to the hospital.

The Chenango Arts Council is partnering with Friends of Rogers to offer a bus trip to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.  The touring bus will leave the Chenango Arts Council parking lot, at 27 West Main Street in Norwich at 7:00 AM on Saturday, August 3rd and return to the same location at around 10 pm that night. A Town of Greene resident was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for Harassment and Criminal Contempt Monday.  Deputies arrested Brittany Niemiec after a complaint of a domestic dispute where she allegedly subjected the victim to unwanted physical contact while there was an active order of protection in place.  Niemiec was arraigned in the Town of Greene Court and was released on her own recognizance.

Oneonta Officials said that their contractor will be connecting the new water main to existing water mains at the intersections of Main & Tilton, and Main & Third. The residents on these side streets will experience a temporary water outage while the service is switched from the old main to the new main, lasting less than four hours.  1-lane traffic will be maintained on Main Street, side streets may be closed to through traffic. All businesses within the work zone will remain accessible during the work.

The State Department of Labor today released preliminary local unemployment rates for May.   The Statewide Unemployment rate was an even 4% in May, Locally, Chenango County had 3.7% unemployment, Delaware County had 4% & Otsego County had 3.4%.

A Public Meeting on new Upper Delaware River Policies will be held in Hancock on July 10th.  Representatives from the Delaware River Basin Commission, State DEC, The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and the DRBC Subcommittee on Ecological Flows (SEF) will discuss new approaches to control high water temperatures and reduce erratic water releases in the Upper Delaware River tail waters.  The meeting on July 10th will begin at 10:30 AM until 12:00 Noon at the Friends of the Upper Delaware River office at 158 East Front Street, Hancock,  RSVP’s are requested to info@fudr.org

Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care is hosting a Caregiver Support Group at Tri-Town Regional Hospital in Sidney beginning Monday, July 15th.  The group will meet 6 times to provide information and support for those who are taking care of seriously ill family members or friends.  Caregivers will have an opportunity to identify concerns, discuss feelings, receive support from others, and locate community resources which may be helpful for their unique situations.  There is no cost, but registration is required at 432-5525.

The Sidney Community Band Announced their 2019 Don Clayton Memorial Trailside Concert Series will be held at the Pavillion at Keith Clark Park at 6:30 PM on wednesday nights, starting July 10th with the Sidney Community Band.  Shows will be held each wednesday night through August 21st, All concerts free and open to the public. Republican primary Results have been released; Town of Sidney Clerk Primary was won by Sheila Paul over Lisa French 134 – 112. The Broome County District Attorney Republican Primary was won by Paul Battisti by a slim margin over Michael Korchak, in the Republican Primary for Norwich Mayor,  Shawn Sastri handily defeats incumbent mayor Christine Carnrike  & North Norwich Town Supervisor between Timothy Brown & Robert Wansor ended as a tie, 51 votes each. The Republican primary for Town of Hancock Highway Superintendent was won by Neil Emerich, Democratic Party Primaries for the Oneonta Common Council, were won by Mark Davies in Oneonta’s 2nd ward & Katie Lapari Shue won in the 4th Ward.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Department executed a no knock search warrant at 121 Ashcraft Road in the Town of Plymouth Tuesday. The search warrant stemmed from an investigation involving the distribution of Crystal Methamphetamine, Norwich Police assisted with the investigation and execution of the search warrant.  The Narcotics Division arrested 47 year old William Johnson and 35 year old Kelli Johnson for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The Sheriff’s Office recovered Crystal Methamphetamine, packaging material, digital scales, cash, and several firearms. The investigation remains ongoing.

Ed Curley of Sidney has participated in numerous General Clinton Canoe Regattas, has also has become a bicycling enthusiast, he has decided to bike across country from San Diego California to St. Augustine Florida to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.  Curley talked to WCDO About this fundraiser in an RV in Nevada earlier today:

The deadline to sign up for this year’s Gus Macker basketball Tournament in Norwich has been extended, organizer Tom Revoir explains:

Revoir said that about 270 teams have signed up, they are looking to get up to 400 teams, and Volunteers can call Revoir at 336-9622 extension 29 to volunteers to referee, or for any other positions for this year’s tournament July 13th & 14th.

The State DEC announced that statewide efforts to control giant hogweed are making substantial headway in eradicating this dangerous plant.   Giant hogweed can cause severe skin and eye irritation, including painful burns and scarring when skin exposed to its sap becomes more sensitive to UV radiation.  More information about giant hogweed is available at DEC’s website.

Executives from the State Office of Victim Services & the State Office of Children and Family Services  toured the new mobile Child Advocacy Center in Delaware County Monday.   The Delaware County mobile unit is 1 of 7 that will be delivered throughout the state this summer and fall  & it is part of a $4.45 million investment by the state to improve services for children who are victims of physical or sexual abuse.  The program is being funded through a partnership between the State Office of Victim Services and the State Office of Children and Family Services.

State Primary Elections are being held today, with Polls will be open from 12:00 noon to 9:00 PM.  Republican Primaries will be held in Delaware County for Sidney Town Clerk between incumbent Lisa French & Sheila Paul, Primaries will also be held for Hancock Superintendent of Highways & a Stamford Town Council. Attorney General Letitia James today announced that her Office will conduct an Election Day Hotline to troubleshoot and resolve a range of issues encountered by voters at their poll sites today.  The Hotline is available at 1-800-771-7755 or by email civil.rights@ag.ny.gov through 9:00 PM tonight.  The Hotline will be staffed by attorneys and staff in the Attorney General’s Civil Rights Bureau.

The Chenango County Department of Public Works announced that County Road 32 will undergo Hot Mix Asphalt paving today Between State Route 320 and State Route 12 in the towns of Norwich AND North Norwich.  The traveling public is asked to find alternate routes if possible. Oneonta Officials announced that today, the contractor will be replacing water services and connecting them to the new water main, from Hunt Street to Tilton Avenue, each building along this stretch will experience a temporary water outage while the service is switched from the old main to the new main, lasting fifteen minutes or less.  Also the contractor will be replacing stormwater catch basins on Main St, between Pine Street and Gault Avenue.  One-lane traffic will be maintained on Main Street, at times, side streets along this stretch may be closed to through traffic.  All businesses within the work zone will remain accessible during the work.
