Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Sunday to a burglary in the Town of Union. Deputies found the suspect, 42 year old Nicholas Sacco of Endicott lying on the ground while the homeowner stood nearby holding a snow shovel. Sacco was taken into custody, the homeowner was treated at the scene by EMS for lacerations to his arm. The homeowner reported hearing glass breaking nearby, and then from the back of his own house, he discovered Sacco attempting to break in, pushed him off his enclosed porch, Sacco attempted re-entry & the homeowner stuck Sacco repeatedly with a snow shovel. Deputies discovered that the property next door, was also burglarized. Sacco was charged with 2nd & 3rd Degree Burglary, plus 2 counts of criminal mischief, he was arraigned and remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility.

The State Labor department announced that the state unemployment rate remains at about 4.4%, the rate has been around 4% steadily since September of 2023. Currently there are about 7.6 million unemployed in New York State 398,000

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office announced that an inmate at the Correctional Facility was found unresponsive in his bed at approximately 6:00 AM on Monday. 54 year old William Warnock of Binghamton was found unresponsive by members of the Corrections Division, staff administered CPR and a defibrillator, but were unable to revive him. A full autopsy will be conducted by the Broome Medical Examiner, The Correctional Facility is conducting a full investigation and are cooperating with the Attorney General and the State Commission on Corrections. Warnock had entered the facility on June 27, and was serving a sentence for robbery and menacing from the City of Binghamton Police Department.

A Chenango County grand jury indicted Brian Currie for 2nd-degree burglary, 3rd-degree assault & 2 counts of endangering the welfare of a child. The Indictments accused Currie of unlawfully entering a building on or about July 30th, in the Town of Guilford with the intent to commit a crime, assault an individual, and acted in a manner likely to be injurious to children present during the alleged break-in. Currie faces action on the Indictments in Chenango County Court at a later date.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office announced the successful completion of its annual No-Shave October and November fundraiser, in which members of the Road Patrol Division and Corrections Division raised $2,500 to support veterans in Delaware County. This year’s proceeds were donated to the Delaware County Veterans Service Agency.

A Chenango County Grand Jury indicted Richard Clemons on multiple charges for alleged sex crimes involving a young child. The indictment charges Clemons with 2 counts of 2nd-degree rape, multiple counts of promoting a sexual performance by a child, possessing a sexual performance by a child, tampering with physical evidence, forcible touching and sexual abuse. The crimes were reported in the City of Norwich in mid-to-late October.

Starting January 1, New York State’s Foam Ban will be expanded to include polystyrene foam coolers and other containers designed to be used for cold storage. The new law encourages New Yorkers to use sustainable container and packaging options, no covered food service provider, manufacturer or store will be allowed to sell, offer for sale, or distribute expanded polystyrene containers.

The Arc Otsego has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Otsego County to establish its Essential Needs Fund. The grant will allow The Arc Otsego to distribute direct financial support for urgent housing-related expenses, including rent and utility bills. Assistance will be provided on a case-by-case basis following a short application process, ensuring support is fair, timely, and tailored to each individual’s situation.

Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation that enhanced real property tax exemptions for Seniors. The law allows localities to provide a property tax exemption for senior citizens who meet the income eligibility limits, up to 65% of the assessed valuation of their properties, the maximum percentage of exemption local governments have been able to offer senior citizens was set at 50% and has not been raised in decades, which could translate into savings of up to $300 annually for the average senior.

State Police arrested 29 year old Dylan Whitman of Oxford following an accident early Saturday on North Road in Oxford. Whitman was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, DWI, & Operating a Vehicle with a BAC of .08 or higher. Whitman was also wanted on a criminal Warrant from Oneonta, and he faces court action shortly.

SUNY Delhi is receiving a $32 million investment from Empire State Development, and the SUNY Construction Fund to build a new mechatronics facility. SUNY Chancellor John King announced that many mechatronics students at Delhi can secure jobs at major local companies like Chobani and IBM. SUNY Delhi’s North Hall will be the site of the program, which will prepare students for careers in advanced manufacturing. The 15,000 square-foot facility is expected to open in 2030.

Governor Hochul signed legislation Thursday that will require health insurance providers to offer lung cancer screenings to patients at no cost. The legislation would also require providers to offer follow-up screenings or other diagnostic services. Almost 14,000 New Yorkers are diagnosed with lung cancer and about 7,400 die from this disease each year.

State Police responded Thursday afternoon to State Route 12B in the town of Sherburne for a report of a 2-car accident. An investigation determined that a tractor trailer, driven by 57 year old Jacob Relyea of Bridgeport encountered a white-out snow squall, lost control and crossed over into the southbound lane, colliding head on with a sedan driven by 32 year old Danica Jones of Earlville, she was pronounced dead at the scene, Troopers administered a Standard Field Sobriety Test and Relyea showed no signs of impairment, he was issued tickets for vehicle and traffic law violations, The investigation is ongoing.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 46 year old Adam Smith of Kirkwood after Deputies responded Wednesday to report of a man driving in circles on someone’s lawn, firing a weapon & striking an electrical transformer & hitting another vehicle while leaving. On Thursday investigators learned that Smith was outside his residence armed with a weapon, he went back inside when officers responded, After a brief standoff, Smith was taken into custody without incident. A search warrant was executed, they seized 2 unregistered handguns, 40-long guns and narcotics. Smith was charged with 2 Counts of Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Criminal Mischief, Reckless Endangerment, 5 Counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Illegal Discharge of a Firearm, he was turned over the Broome County Correctional Facility for Arraignment. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by State Police in this investigation.

50 year old Paul Graham of Binghamton was found guilty of 1st Degree Assault and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in Broome County Court. The verdict comes in response to a January 4th incident during which Graham used a cane knife to stab the victim through the heart, causing life-threatening injuries. The victim required immediate surgery but survived the attack. Graham has a prior criminal conviction, his weapons charge became a felony. Graham faces up to 25 years in state prison when he is sentenced in March.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 26 year old Jacob Roman of Walton with 2 counts of Grand Larceny, and 1 count of Burglary, On October 18th, Deputies were dispatched to Benton Avenue in the Village of Walton for a reported Burglary in Progress where they located, identified and arrested Roman. On November 21st, Deputies located and arrested Roman on new charges after it was alleged that he had taken the victim’s credit card and made numerous purchases on the card which amounted to over $1,500 without authorization. Roman was transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility for arraignment.

State Police & Local Law Enforcement Agencies around the State New York State will increase patrols during the holidays to combat issues like impaired and reckless driving, and to deter other crimes like robbery and larceny. The patrols will include both visible enforcement, such as checkpoints, as well as unmarked vehicles mingle with traffic to catch distracted drivers.

33 year old Corey Green of Vestal was sentenced in U.S. District Court to 19 years in federal prison for his role in a drug trafficking conspiracy spanning the United States. Green admitted that he possessed, distributed, and conspired to distribute large quantities of fentanyl, heroin & Methamphetamine in and around Broome County, he also admitted to possessing 3 handguns and 2 AK-47 style weapons to further his drug-trafficking activities, while being prohibited from possessing firearms due to previous convictions, & conspiring to launder his drug-trafficking proceeds. Green was sentenced to a 19 year prison term, concurrent 3 and 5-year terms of post-release supervision, and a money judgment of over $185,000 of unrecovered proceeds from his drug trafficking. Co-conspirator Michael Jacobs of Endicott, was previously sentenced to 10 years and 10 months term of imprisonment & 5 years of post-release supervision.

21 year old Joziah Worthington was sentenced following his convictions after trial in Broome County Court, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd & 3rd Degree, to 9 years in a State Correctional Facility with 5 years of post-release supervision for 1 charge, and 7 years in prison with 3 years of post-release supervision for other charge, to run concurrently. Worthington was arrested by state Police in 2024 in Johnson City, for illegally possessing a firearm as well as a large capacity ammunition feeding device capable of accepting 31 rounds, loaded with 25 rounds, Worthington’s DNA being found on the firearm.

Chobani announced that at the East Park Bandstand in Norwich last Saturday, following the 30th annual Norwich Parade of Lights, More than 30 Chobani volunteers distributed 3,000 cases of Chobani products, to thank the community. Chobani will also participate in the annual tree-lighting ceremony at Hyde Park in New Berlin on December 6th, employees plan to give out over 200 cases of yogurt to local families.

NBT Bank presented the United Way of Mid Rural New York with a check for $190,000 to help fund programs that provide financial stability, education and health resources for individuals and families in Chenango, Delaware, Madison and Otsego counties. 41 Year old Trevor Metterhauser of Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to attempted aggravated sexual abuse, aggravated sexual abuse, sexual exploitation of children, and multiple counts of possession of child pornography. The case involves 2 small children, 1 in upstate New York & the Other in Texas. Metterhauser admitted that he conspired with Brandon Whitford to sexually exploit a 4-year-old girl in New York, In December 2022, he traveled to Texas to sexually assault a 2-year-old child and to record that abuse. When Metterhauser was arrested he had multiple electronic devices that contained the sexual assaults; and child pornography he obtained from the internet.

State Police today announced that they issued 13,036 tickets statewide during this year’s Thanksgiving holiday traffic enforcement period. Troopers conducted sobriety checkpoints, deployed DWI patrols, and ticketed drivers who were using handheld electronic devices. Troopers arrested 247 people for DWI and investigated 1,277 crashes, including 2 fatal crashes. In Troop C, there were 1232 ticketed, including 21 DWI Arrests, 434 for speeding, 41 for distracted driving & 35 violators of the “Move Over” Law.

Norwich Police responded Tuesday to the report of an Emu running loose on Chenango Avenue. The Emu was eventually contained to a fenced in yard on Francis Avenue, which kept the bird away from downtown traffic. The owner was notified, RTG of Norwich assisted in the effort and the emu was successfully brought inside the owner’s trailer, where it was returned to its home in Bainbridge.

State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald declared that influenza is now prevalent in New York State, health care personnel who have not received this year’s flu vaccine MUST wear masks in areas where patients may be present. The Department has a total of 17,783 positive flu cases, Outside of New York City, week-over-week flu cases are up 114%, to 3,619. Hospitalizations doubled to 413 across the State. Attorney General Letitia James won a court order preventing the federal government from enforcing a provision in the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” that would strip Planned Parenthood of its Medicaid funds, jeopardizing health care for millions of low-income patients across the country. Attorney General James joined a coalition of 21 other attorneys general and the governor of Pennsylvania in suing the Department of Health and Human Services to block the provision, The United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts issued a ruling granting the coalition’s motion for a preliminary injunction, ordering HHS to continue paying Medicaid funds to all states and clinics in the coalition.

State Police are seeking the public’s assistance in locating 25 year old Alora Stott of Oneonta, she is wanted on active warrants for failing to appear for scheduled court dates at Sidney Village Court & Chenango County Court. Stott failed to appear in Sidney on charges of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument & Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, from a January 2025 arrest where Stott was in possession of a stolen checkbook and multiple forged and stolen checks. Broome County District Attorney’s office announced today that Nicholas Neer of Binghamton, was sentenced in Broome County Court to 7 to 14 years of incarceration following his pleas of guilty to 3rd degree Burglary and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property. Neer’s convictions stem from an investigation earlier this year by the State Police and the Broome County Sheriff’s Office into a series of burglaries and thefts in the towns of Windsor, Union, and Kirkwood, they identified Neer as a key participant responsible for breaking into multiple properties and possessing stolen items tied to those incidents.

The State Department of Health is alerting the public to an increase in measles cases in parts of the state. To date, there 35 total cases , with 16 in Upstate Counties, New Yorkers are urged to be up to date on their measles, mumps and rubella vaccines. New survey findings regarding Governor Hochul’s distraction-free schools law have been released, they received over 350 responses from school administrators who implemented smartphone restrictions this year, 92% reported a smooth transition to the new policy, 83% of schools experienced more positive classroom environments and better student engagement & 75% of teachers reported that the distraction-free policy improved their ability to teach effectively.

39 year old Michael Davis pleaded guilty in Broome County Court to 1st Degree Assault stemming from a violent attack, on October 22, where Davis acted with the intent to cause serious physical injury to another individual by means of am unidentified instrument, Davis will serve 7 years in state prison, followed by 5 years of post-release supervision, Davis is scheduled to be sentenced in Broome County Court on March 3, 2026.

The City of Oneonta is happy to announce the new 115-space public parking lot on Market Street at the site of the former parking garage, is now open to the public. The lot includes 11 spaces will be reserved for electric vehicle charging. The new stair and elevator tower in the northwest corner of the lot is also open, providing an accessible pedestrian connection to Water Street, Oneonta Public Transit began operating today out of the new Transit Center at 47 Market Street, adjacent to the new parking lot.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 24 year old Austin Hitt of Schenevus for Arson, Burglary & Criminal Mischief, following an investigation into a reported residential fire in Schenevus. The Annual Norwich Chobani Holiday of Lights Parade, will start Saturday at 6:00 PM at the NBT building at 52 South Broad Street and ending on Fair Street in Norwich. Norwich BID Spokesperson Mindy Chawgo explains:

Over 100 businesses, churches, fire departments, and other groups will participate, At the end of the parade, Santa will be led to his igloo and kids will visit, Santa’s hours will continue from 1 to 4 pm., on Saturdays, and after the tree lighting ceremony on December 4th.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office & the City of Oneonta Police Department, arrested 41 year old Nakia Facey of Oneonta following the execution of a search warrant. Facey was found to be in possession of a firearm while being prohibited to do so due to a court order, he was taken into custody and was charged with Criminal Contempt, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Possession of a Firearm & was being held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await Centralized Arraignment.
