Area Congressman Josh Riley participated in a hearing of the Public Service Commission last week where he cross-examined NYSEG executives and demanded answers about why the utility monopoly is demanding Upstate New Yorkers pay higher bills while sending millions in profits to its foreign parent company. Riley has co-sponsored a bill to take on Utility Companies like NYSEG:

Riley said that NYSEG executives confirmed for the first time they authorized a $450 million dividend to Iberdrola; their parent corporation in Spain, they were already preparing to request a rate increase of more than $500 million, which would increase New Yorkers Monthly bills by about $35 dollars a month. The Public Service Commission is expected to rule on the NYSEG rate request shortly.

Vestal Police responded Wednesday to a report of an individual experiencing a mental health crisis in the area of 581 Sequoia Lane, officers encountered an individual who was in possession of a knife and threatening self-harm. During the course of the interaction, officers made numerous requests for the individual to drop the knife. The individual ignored commands and threw a television at officers & raised the knife and advanced toward an officer. Despite the continued de-escalation efforts, shots were fired and the individual was struck. The individual was transported to Wilson Medical Center. No officers were injured during the incident. State Police will conduct an independent investigation into the circumstance surrounding the shooting. State Police announced that the individual was identified as 38 year old Eslam Ahmed Hegazy of Vestal, he has succumbed to his injuries.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 45 year old Robert DeMuth of Oxford following an investigation into a stolen trailer and 3 snowmobiles from Norwich on February 6th. The Sheriff’s Office received a tip, they located 2 of the stolen snowmobiles in Norwich & the stolen trailer in Oxford. DeMuth was arrested Tuesday for Criminal Mischief following a domestic dispute, he was questioned & subsequently charged with Grand Larceny, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Conspiracy, & Burglary for the February case plus the Thefts reported in Greene in November 2024. DeMuth was released on his own recognizance & is scheduled to appear in the Town of Greene Court and the Town of Norwich Court at later dates, more charges are anticipated & the investigation is continuing.

36 year old Samantha Green of Binghamton was sentenced in Broome County Court to serve up to 6 years in State Prison following her conviction for 3rd degree Burglary. On May 1, 2025, in Binghamton, City Police Officers responded to a report of a burglary at 100 Chenango Street, officers reviewed surveillance footage from the location and recognized the Defendant as Green, footage showed her leaving a short time later with bags & a suitcase. Green stole numerous items including an IPAD from the victim, who is both blind and deaf, and used it as the only means of communication.

State Police responded to multiple accidents due to the weather again this morning, this morning at about 3:15 am., Troopers were dispatched to I-81 in the town of Cortlandville, the investigation revealed that a Greyhound bus was traveling northbound on I-81, it was rear-ended by a vehicle operated by Cheikh Mohamed Lem Abedouty of Virginia, the bus slowed following the initial collision, it was subsequently rear-ended by a car operated by Tyreck Hunte of Endicott, who did not initially stop but later reported the crash to Troopers. Abedouty was transported to Guthrie Cortland Medical Center, where he was treated and released. Hunte was not injured, The operator of the bus, Kimberly Poole of Philadelphia, did not report any injuries. None of the 43 passengers on board reported injuries. The investigation is ongoing.

On February 19th State Troopers, members of the Oneonta Police Department and Firefighters responded to Chestnut Street for a report of a vehicle blocking the roadway with 2 people who were described as “unresponsive”, the vehicle had been moved into a parking lot and both occupants of the vehicle were awake and displayed characteristics associated with impairment. The Trooper also observed illegal drugs and paraphernalia inside the vehicle. The operator, 19 year old Joslynn Clark of Norwich, was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle while Impaired by Drugs and 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, The passenger, an 18-year-old male was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Both were issued appearance tickets to the Oneonta Town Court on April 7.

The Broome County Sheriff’s office arrested 61 year old MD Omar Faruk and 39 year old Mohammad Rahman for Criminal Tax Fraud, Possession or Transport of Unstamped or Unlawfully Stamped Cigarettes following an investigation into the illegal sales of cigarettes, vapes and marijuana in the Town of Colesville. On February 12th, the Sheriff’s Office, the Special Investigations Unit Task Force & the Broome County Health Department conducted a flavored nicotine vape compliance check at the Empire Plaza gas station, a search warrant uncovered illicit flavored nicotine vapes, marijuana products, untaxed cigarettes and $18,346 in Cash. Faruk was released with an appearance ticket to the Town of Colesville Court, Rahman was turned over to U.S. Border Patrol, as he had failed to appear for immigration proceedings.

The New York State Public Service Commission is currently reviewing a major rate increase request from NYSEG with a final decision expected in the coming weeks. NYSEG is seeking a 35% increase in delivery rates for electricity, almost 40% for Natural Gas customers, they claim that the rate hikes are necessary to fund grid modernization, infrastructure reliability, and meeting state-mandated climate goals. If the rate hike if approved, residential customers could see their monthly bills jump by $30 to $35. The changes would go into effect in May.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced New York State will allocate an additional $150 million in financial assistance for municipalities outside New York City to assist in relieving immediate fiscal stress. This additional funding includes a $100 million increase in Temporary Municipal Assistance which will triple the amount of funding that all cities, towns and villages outside New York City receive from this aid stream. Southern Tier Municipalities will receive $8.2 million.

Binghamton Police responded Tuesday for a report of a domestic dispute with shots fired, a gas line was cut and the suspect leaving the scene in a stolen vehicle. Police pursued the vehicle into Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania State Police then continued the pursuit on Interstate 81 to Scranton. 53-year-old Diriki Birden was apprehended & was charged with 2 counts of Attempted Murder, Robbery, Criminal Use of a Firearm, multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon and Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Birden remains in the custody of the Pennsylvania State Police, where he faces additional charges in Pennsylvania. Binghamton Police recovered a firearm at the scene, No victims were struck by gunfire, no injuries were reported.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 27 year old Alexander Gonzalez of King Ferry for Fleeing the scene of a motor vehicle accident with property damage and Drinking While Driving with a Blood Alcohol Content over .08% in the Town of Otselic last week. 4 Binghamton men who were arrested February 4th by the Broome County Sheriff’s Office on 11 felony weapons charges have been remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility following an indictment filed by the Broome County District Attorney’s Office in Broome County Court. Samear Wallace, Johnathan Ayala, Isaiah Johnson, and Jahliek Walker-Coates, were charged with a total of 11 felony weapons charges following an investigation into gunshots fired in the Town of Dickinson, they were found to be in possession of 4 loaded ghost guns, one stolen and loaded handgun and six high-capacity ammunition feeding devices, including a 50-round drum magazine.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies investigated a trespassing complaint earlier this month, they interviewed the victim who accused 40-year-old Kristen Rice of Hancock had entered and remained in the dwelling of another person despite being asked, and that Rice subjected another person to unwanted physical contact. Deputies arrested Rice for Criminal Trespass and Harassment, Deputies transported Rice to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office for processing, she was turned over to the Delaware County Correctional Facility & was held for arraignment.

Mirabito Energy Products donated $8,500 to The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation Sports Matter Program, through their partnership with Syracuse University Football. Mirabito Spokesperson Marissa Sweeney explains:
