Starting Sunday March 1st, the bag\nwaste reduction law will take effect in New York State.   The Bag Waste Reduction Law bans Single Use\nplastic bags in grocery stores, clothing shops or home improvement stores; more\ninformation is available at dec.ny.gov\/chemical.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New York State Association of\nCounties is calling on the Federal government to provide $3.1 billion in\nemergency supplemental funding for the public health response to the novel\ncoronavirus. Of the $3.1 billion, at least $500 million should be directed to\nlocal and state health departments. \nAdditionally, Governor Cuomo recently announced that he was seeking a$40\nmillion emergency appropriation for the New York State Department of Health to\nhire additional staff, procure equipment and other resources necessary to\nrespond to the potential novel coronavirus. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.O. Governor Cuomo\nannounced that New York State is now offering a free text message program to\nhelp kids quit e-cigarettes as the state moves to reverse the alarming rise in\nyouth vaping.   To access this program,\ntext “DropTheVape” to 88709, more information about e-cigarettes is\navailable at health.ny.gov\/NoVape<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Otsego County Office of Emergency\nServices confirmed that 5 firefighters were injured in a Middlefield garage\nfire from a series of explosions Wednesday night at 3679 Otsego County Route\n35.  The firefighters were James Tallman,\nJon Roach & Scott Monington of the Cooperstown Fire Department & John\nSears & Ryan Smith of the Middlefield Fire Department, Roach &\nMonington were taken to a Syracuse Hospital for treatment of injuries, the\nother 3 were treated at Bassett Hospital & were released.  Firefighters from Middlefield, Cooperstown,\nWestford, Cherry Valley, and Milford responded to the fire Wednesday\nnight.  State Police, State office of\nFire Prevention & Control & the Otsego County Sheriff\u2019s department are\ninvestigating the cause & origin of the fire.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

41 year old Nasir Azmat of Franklin\nappeared in Town of Franklin Court Thursday night to answer to more than 40\ncounts of charges relating to animal cruelty. \nAzmat pleaded \u201cnot guilty\u201d to all charges, he was ordered to check in\nweekly with authorities prior to his next court appearance March 26th. Many\nprotesters showed up to Franklin to show their support for the dogs who are\nknown as the “Franklin 20”, who were brought to area shelters\nfollowing Azmat’s arrest.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

State Police arrested 55 year old\nRobert Horan of Unadilla for Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Forcible\nTouching, after an investigation of an incident in Unadilla in January.  Horan is a case worker with Otsego County,\nthe incident did not occur as a part of Horan\u2019s official work duties;  he was arraigned & was released on his\nown recognizance and is due back in court on April 13th.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The total number of flu cases in New\nYork State has eclipsed the record number of since the State Department of\nHealth began tracking flu cases 22 years ago.  \nFor the week ending February 22, there were 131,604 laboratory-confirmed\ncases so far this season, last week, the number of laboratory-confirmed flu\ncases decreased 26% and hospitalizations decreased 13%. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
