State DEC Commissioner Joe Martens Reported that his agency could approve shale gas permits before hydrofracking regulations are completed if a separate study determines the controversial drilling method will not threaten the public health.\u00a0 Martens said that state Health Commissioner Nirav Shah indicated he needs a few more weeks to finish a health review \u00a0hydrofracking.\u00a0 Dr. Shah\u2019s statement means that the DEC would not get the final draft regulations in place by the February 27th deadline, which would then require a whole new round of public comments.\u00a0 Hydrofracking was halted 4 \u00bd years ago in New York State, it was used in western counties of the state since 1979.<\/p>\n
