The legislature has until April 1st<\/sup> to get the budget completed, Cuomo & the legislature have decreased the budgets the previous 2 years, this year\u2019s budget starts out at 134 Billion dollars, it could add another 1.5 billion depending on federal aid that the state might get for Hurricane Sandy related issues.<\/p>\n ———————————<\/p>\n The Owego Fire Department confirmed that Captain Matthew Porcari was killed and Firefighter Daniel Gavin was injured, after a floor collapsed at a house fire in Newark Valley.\u00a0 Porcari died in the fire, Gavin suffered burns & was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City & was then transferred to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.\u00a0 The Owego Fire Department had responded to a call for mutual aid to the fire at 871 Chamberlain Road in Newark Valley, the fire was reported just before 11:00 PM last night.<\/p>\n —————————<\/p>\n Officials at the state university on Oneonta reported that 56 students who were living on the 3rd<\/sup> floor of Matteson Hall have been able to remove their belongings and have been moved to other dorms on the campus, since last weeks fire.\u00a0 121 students who had been living on the 1st<\/sup> & 2nd<\/sup> floor are being housed temporarily at the Holiday Inn on Route 23 Southside; officials expect that they will be able to move back into their dorms rooms before the weekend.\u00a0 The fire was started last Wednesday by a defective power strip in a 3rd<\/sup> floor dorm room, officials said that the 3rd<\/sup> floor will be closed for the remainder of the semester for clean up and renovation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n ———————————<\/p>\n The U.S. Department of Education reported that the New York graduation rates increased to 76% in the 2009-2010 year, an increase from 61% percent in 2002-2003.\u00a0 The graduation rate was 78 percent nationally.\u00a0 The survey reported that New York\u2019s dropout rate was 3.6%, compared to 3.4% percent nationally, and an improvement by almost 2% since 2002-2003.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n ———————————–<\/p>\n State Troopers in Greene arrested 27-year-old Dustin Curtis<\/strong> of Smithville Flats for Felony DWI, 1st<\/sup> degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Vehicle, 4th<\/sup> degree Criminal Mischief and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. The arrest resulted from a domestic dispute investigation; Curtis was arraigned and sent to Chenango County Jail on $10,000 bail pending a felony hearing.<\/p>\n —————————————-<\/p>\n State Troopers from Troop \u201cC\u201d in Sidney arrested 24-year-old Ryder Terpak<\/strong> of Unadilla on 3 counts of 7th<\/sup> degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Prescription Not in the Original Container. The arrest resulted from a traffic stop on Interstate 88 in the Town of Bainbridge; Terpak was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Bainbridge Court on January 31st<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n ———————————————<\/p>\n State Troopers in Oneonta arrested 55-year-old Donna Horton<\/strong> of Delhi for Driving While Intoxicated.
