Oneonta police arrested two men from the state of Delaware after heroin was confiscated. 21-year-old Tommy Collins and 26 year old Keith Williams, both of Wilmington, Delaware were charged with 3rd<\/sup> degree criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, plus 4th<\/sup> & 7th<\/sup> degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, following the execution of a search warrant Friday at 2 Ann Street in Oneonta. Oneonta police confiscated $604 in cash and 615 packets of heroin; Collins and Williams were held in the Oneonta City lockup pending arraignment.<\/p>\n

A record amount of refunds went to people with unclaimed funds in New York last year. \u00a0 It also meant a 26 percent reduction in money to the state. The state Comptroller’s Office returned $422 million to claimants in the fiscal year that ended in March, a state record. But as more money went to people who had unclaimed funds, less went to the state’s budget, a drop of $187 million in the 2013-14 fiscal year. The Comptroller’s Office has a database to see if you are owed money, at osc.state.ny.us.<\/p>\n

Swimming pool owners can help scientists track the spread of invasive Asian long-horned beetles by checking their filters. The state DEC is inviting pool owners to participate in its annual Asian long-horned beetle survey now through August 29th. \u00a0 The beetles have killed hundreds of thousands of trees across the country. Pool monitoring has the potential to become New York’s most effective method for detecting the pests. Participants check their pool filters and skimmers for the beetles and email pictures to dec.ny.gov.<\/p>\n

Governor Cuomo announced that 5 businesses would expand or locate in Binghamton as a result of START-UP New York; they are projected to invest $2.3 million and create more than 80 new jobs in tax-free areas sponsored by Binghamton University. \u00a0 The 5 businesses will create jobs in biotechnology research and development, analytical laboratory instrument manufacturing, chemical manufacturing, audio and video equipment manufacturing, and software services. 41 schools have been approved for START-UP NY; more information is available at startup-ny.com.<\/p>\n

The Otsego County Fair will begin their festivities tonight before the fair begins at 6:00 PM, as the Otsego County Chamber of Commerce will conduct a ribbon cutting ceremony at the newly renovated Fair Store and Museum. The 18th Annual Otsego County Fair Hymn Sing will start at 6:30 pm at the Grandstand, the rest of the fair activities begin Tuesday at the fairgrounds in Morris.<\/p>\n
