Governor Cuomo today announced that patient-facing healthcare workers at state-run hospitals will be required to get vaccinated for COVID-19 by Labor Day. The Governor also announced that all New York State employees; about 130,000 people, will be required to get vaccinated for COVID-19 by Labor Day. State employees who do not get vaccinated will be required to be tested for COVID-19 on a weekly basis. The measure are being implemented as vaccination rates are increasing slowly, but COVID 19 positivity rates are over 2.5% again after decreasing to about .35% only a few weeks ago.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is calling for the expansion of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or “SNAP” benefit eligibility to college students attending 2 and 4-year universities part-time or more:

Senator Gillibrand is a member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry; she said that a 2019 SUNY survey showed that 55% of community college and 41% of 4-year college students in the SUNY system reported experiencing hunger while in school & that requirements such as “work for food” only made the food insecurity among college students worse.

The American Red Cross continues to experience a severe blood shortage and donors of all blood types, especially type O are urged to make an appointment to give now. Donors can schedule an appointment by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device. A Blood drive is being held in Cooperstown today from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 31 Elm Street & in Oneonta from 1:00 to 6:00 PM at the Foothills Performing Arts & Civic Center, at 24 Market Street.
