Attorneys for Payton Gendron of Conklin are trying to have his hate crime trial moved to New York City this year, where they feel that Gendron may get a fairer trial due to the diversity of the jury pool in New York City. Gendron is accused of shooting 10 Black people at a Buffalo supermarket in May of 2022, The U.S. Attorney’s office in Buffalo has not responded to the request, meanwhile, Gendron is serving a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole after pleading guilty in November 2022 to multiple charges, including murder, federal prosecutors are expected to seek the death penalty of Gendron is convicted on the hate crime charges.

Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar released the results of the first quarter of targeted public safety and crime response initiative conducted by their Strategic Response Group. The SRG’s Targeted Public Safety and Crime Response Initiative for the 1st quarter of 2025 resulted in 31 Narcotics Arrests, 24 Warrant Arrests, 2 Weapon Arrests, 18 Vehicle and Traffic Arrests, 209 Traffic Violations Issued. Since the SRG’s full-time activation in mid-June, their targeted crime response has yielded over 440 arrests across Broome County, which ranged from Narcotics charges to fugitives with outstanding Arrest Warrants, to Vehicle and Traffic arrests.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand slammed the Trump administration’s massive cuts to funding for food banks, soup kitchens, Schools and to farmers who provide much of that food to those low income families across the nation & in the state:

Last month, President Trump slashed $1 billion in federal funding used to purchase food for food banks and other organizations that provide meals, he is canceling another $500 million in already approved funding for food banks and other emergency food providers through The Emergency Food Assistance Program. 1 in 7 New Yorkers are already going hungry, & that number is expected to get worse with the new cuts.

Governor Hochul and State Leaders failed to pass a budget by the April 1st deadline. the main sticking point are changes to the state’s Discovery laws passed in 2019 to speed up trials requiring prosecutors to turn over more evidence at a faster rate. To keep state operations going and to pay employees, a $1.7 billion dollar budget extender has been issued until Thursday.

State Police responded to a report of “shots fired” in the village of New Berlin. An investigation determined that 39 year old Joseph Avery of New Berlin, discharged a gun unsafely within the village limits with the alleged intention of intimidating a person. Avery was located and was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Reckless Endangerment, Stalking, Prohibited Use of a Weapon, Avery was processed and transported to the Chenango County Correctional Facility for Arraignment.

State Police BCI, Troop C Computer Crimes Unit and the Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce arrested 40 year old Dustin Hummel of Oneonta, for possessing child pornography, possessing suspected illegal illicit substances and weapons related charges. During the execution of a search warrant, Hummel was found to be in possession of images consistent with child sexual exploitation, suspected illegal illicit substances, a defaced firearm and high-capacity magazines that are not New York State SAFE Act Compliant. Hummel has been charged with: Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child, Hummel was processed and transported to the Otsego County Correctional Facility and remanded on no bail.

The Village of Sidney Announced the results of Tuesday’s runoff Election for a seat on the Village Board, Luther Higley collected 84 votes, & Patricia Cristelli received 82 votes.
