33 year old Drew Garnier of Masonville appeared in Delaware County Court and accepted responsibility for killing his wife and then causing serious physical injury to their two minor children. On September 4, 2024, Garnier stabbed his pregnant wife, Samantha and their 2 children in their home on Houck Road in the Town of Masonville. Samantha died as a result of the stabbing, the children suffered significant injuries. Garnier pleaded guilty to 1st degree Manslaughter, 2 counts of 1st degree Assault, he withdrew all of his pending motions and agreed to waive his right to appeal as part of the plea agreement. Garnier will be sentenced to 30 years in state prison, to be followed by 15 years of post-release supervision, he was remanded back to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending sentencing on May 13th.

Dollar Tree has announced that it has reached an agreement to sell Family Dollar in a $1 billion deal, ending a merger plan deal that that failed to save the franchise against increasing competition. Family Dollar will continue with plans to close a total of 970 under-performing stores nationwide, it’s unclear if any of the existing store in the Tri-County Region will close.

The Bainbridge Fire Department has received a grant from the Rotary Club of Bainbridge, totaling $2,830 donation for new, firefighter gloves for the department, and the Bainbridge Fire Department will again participate in the Recruit New York days on April 26th, according to Fire Department spokesman Roger Barnhart:

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers responded to 12 fires across 9 counties, including Broome & Otsego Counties between March 17 and 24. The largest blaze occurred in Butternuts, Otsego County, covering 10.5 acres, it was extinguished the next day. 8 of the 12 fires were attributed to debris burning, in spite of the burn ban in effect.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Division was awarded Re-Accreditation status by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services for continuing to meet the standards set forth by The Accreditation Council. The Program consists of 112 total standards, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office met or exceeded to be awarded re-accreditation status. This award marks the 3rd “re-accreditation” status that the Sheriff’s Office has received since they received their initial Certificate of Accreditation in 2010. The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office is one of only 186 accredited law enforcement agencies across in New York State and 1 of only 37 Sheriff’s Offices currently accredited in New York State.

New York Attorney General Letitia James and 19 other attorneys general are suing the Trump administration for cutting nearly half of the Department of Education’s staff and shifting its responsibilities to other agencies. The lawsuit claims that the administration ignored the law to fire government workers, so states couldn’t administer grants, manage student aid, or enforce civil rights laws. The lawsuit argues that President Donald Trump’s team over-reached when laying off over 1,000 federal workers on March 11th & improperly moved student loans under the Small Business Administration and special education under Health and Human Services on March 21.

The Village of Sidney announced that there will be a Public Hearing on the Tentative Budgets for General, Water and Sewer Funds for the Village of Sidney on Monday, April 14 at 7:00 PM. The meeting will be held in the Board Room of the Sidney Civic Center, Copies of the tentative budget are available in the Village Clerk’s Office Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
