Delaware County Public Health announced that a raccoon tested positive for rabies in the Town of Andes recently. Officials said that there were no human exposures; a dog that was not up to date on its rabies vaccination will be quarantined for 6 months. The annual charity auction to benefit the Leatherstocking council of the Boy Scouts of American, will be held this Saturday in Oneonta, or online prior to Saturday’s event. Council District executive Peter Miller explains:

Senate Democrats in Washington have elected Senator Charles Schumer of New York to be their new minority leader when Congress convenes in January. Schumer was unanimously picked this morning to succeed Harry Reid of Nevada, who is retiring in January after 30 years in the Senate.

25 year old Ryan Lawrence of Syracuse, was sentenced to 25 years to life for murdering his 21-month-old daughter Maddox Lawrence earlier this year. Lawrence pleaded guilty in September in Onondaga county court, for fatally beating his infant daughter to death, and leaving her remains in Onondaga Lake.

The Chenango County District Attorney’s office announced that 42 year old Melissa Crispell pleaded not guilty to 2 counts of 2nd degree murder, in connection with the death of 58-year-old David Green of Oxford at Green’s home. Jeremy Coates pleaded not guilty to 1st degree murder in connection with Green’s death, both are being held at the Chenango County Jail.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Town of Plymouth man for 3rd degree assault and 2 counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Cameron Rogers was charged following an investigation into a domestic dispute in the Town of Plymouth. Rogers is accused of causing injuries to an unidentified female victim with 2 children present. Rogers was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court where he was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $1,000 cash bail/$5,000 bond.

State Senator Jim Seward unveiled a collaborative initiative to help dispose of unused prescription medication. 10,000 Deterra™ drug deactivation pouches donated by Mallinckrodt will be available, free of charge, at several area locations; the pouch-based systems deactivate prescription drugs and render chemical compounds safe for landfills. The pouches are also biodegradable, the donation was made to LEAF Council on Alcoholism and Addictions with Bassett Healthcare Network assisting, and the pouches are now available at the LEAF Council at 80 Water Street, Oneonta; Oneonta Fox Care Center Pharmacy, & Bassett Medical Center Pharmacy in Cooperstown. Additional locations and distribution opportunities will be added in the future.

Governor Cuomo today launched a toll-free hotline to report incidents of bias and discrimination, following an uptick in recent reports of discrimination, bias-motivated threats, harassment and violence in Wellsville and Livingston. New Yorkers who have experienced bias or discrimination are encouraged to call (888) 392-3644, or 911. The State Police currently has 46 investigators assigned to Troops across the state who have been trained as bias crime specialists.
