Polling places are open through 9:00 PM tonight for Primary Races, as well as a special Election locally to fill the 19th Congressional District, between Republican Marcus Molinaro and Democrat Patrick Ryan, the winner will fill the position through the end of this year. Primaries are being held locally for the 51st State Senate District, incumbent Republican Peter Oberacker faces a primary challenge from Terry Bernardo, in the 52nd State Senate District, Democrats Lea Webb & Leslie Danks Burke are running for the Democratic party nomination. In the 19th Congressional District, the Democratic Party Primary candidates are Jamie Cheney & Josh Riley, the winner in that race will appear on the Ballot in November for the term starting January 1st 2023.

The Governor’s Office announced that $20 million is available to support addiction services providers in New York State that have been impacted by the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The federal funding will assist providers with fiscal recovery and enable them to continue offering COVID-safe substance use disorder prevention, treatment, harm reduction, and recovery services. The State Department of Labor today released preliminary local unemployment rates for July. The State’s unemployment rate held at 4.4% from June to July, locally, Chenango County had 3.3% unemployment, Delaware County 3.9% & Otsego County 3.5% in July.

The Sidney Veteran’s Memorial Park Association had a successful fundraising Golf Tournament this year, and more fundraisers may be announced, as upgrades are being performed at the Park in Sidney at River Street near State Route 8. Association president Doug Barnard told WCDO News that they need more members & volunteers:

The State Health Department confirmed the 1st case of Monkeypox in a Juvenile. Officials said that the child lives outside of New York City, however, 25% of all monkeypox cases in the U.S. are in New York City. There were 2,596 cases reported statewide as of last Friday.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office reported that a Walton man died Sunday while canoeing on the Susquehanna River in Otego. Emergency Services received a 911 call at 1:59 pm. from a group of family members canoeing on the river, reporting that a member of their party was missing. 43 year old Brian Walley fell into the water, family was unable to locate him, he was found by State Police divers at 6:45 pm. and was declared deceased by the Otsego County Coroner’s office.

From August 15 – August 21 Troopers were out targeting risky and unsafe driving behavior like speeding, distracted driving and violations of the “Move Over Law”. The special campaign titled “Speed Week” resulted in over 25-thousand tickets issued across the state. In Troop C, 1,491 speeding violations were issued and 108 “Move Over” tickets were issued.

The State Health Department announced that they are easing its COVID-19 rules for schools, as Students will no longer be required to quarantine if they are exposed to someone with the virus & no masks are required, As for Monkeypox, Schools are not expected to be a major source of transmission, lower doses of the Monkeypox vaccine will be made available if needed.
