The State Department of Civil Service announced that the application period is now open for the State’s entry-level law enforcement civil service exam. The exam is for applicants seeking a position at the DEC, the Office of State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the State University of New York. Qualified candidates can apply online until 11:59 pm. on September 17th to take the exam, scheduled to be held in November. Applications and more information is available at cs.ny.gov/police.

Otsego County, the Mohawk Valley Economic Development District and Vernonburg Group, will host a public community update meeting on Thursday, August 28th from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at the Morris Fire Hall, the meeting will be held in person and live-streamed online, with a recording available afterward on the project website: www.otsegocountyny.gov/broadband.php. The community session is part of Otsego County’s Broadband Technical Assistance Project, aimed at accessing high-speed internet access for residents, businesses, and institutions across the region.

A benefit will be held for fallen Firefighter Jason McGlone, who was the Assistant Fire Chief of the East Branch Fire department, who was killed in the line of duty responding to an accident on Thursday, July 17th. WCDO spoke with Bill Manning, who is helping to organize the fundraiser for McGlone’s Family on September 13th at the East Branch Fireman’s Park:

The Sidney Police Department, arrested 66 year old Mark O’Neill of Sidney following a week-long investigation for a hit and run motor vehicle accident that occurred on August 11th. O’Neill was charged with Reckless endangerment, Leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, Failing to yield right of way to pedestrian in cross walk, he was released on an appearance ticket to appear in court at a later date.

51 year old Joseph Amato of Treadwell was indicted by a Grand Jury on for Driving While Intoxicated and Obstructing Governmental Administration, this would be Amato’s third DWI within four years. It is alleged that on June 26, 2025, Deputy Elderkin conducted a routine traffic stop and found Amato to be slurring his words with the odor of alcoholic beverages, Amato refused to submit to field sobriety test, He was also uncooperative with law enforcement and impeded their ability to perform the traffic stop.
