The Susquehanna SPCA in Otsego County will host their Ribbon Cutting & Open House at their brand new facility Saturday Morning at 10:00, on State Highway 28 in Cooperstown, Director Stacie Haynes explains:

44-year-old Scott Mawhiney of Deposit pleaded not guilty to a 9 count indictment in Broome County Court Wednesday, he is accused of shooting State Trooper Ryan Thorp last month.  2 of the counts in the indictment were for attempted murder, bail has been set at $100,000 cash or $200,000 bond.  Mawhiney was arrested after troopers responded to the report of a domestic dispute in the Village of Deposit.

The Sidney Alumni Association will hold their alumni weekend Friday through Sunday Afternoon, after missing last year’s event due to the COVID pandemic.  Spokesman Bryan Innes told WCDO news of some of the highlights:

Innes said that the Saturday night social event will not be held, and they will leave activities up to the individual classes, more information is available at sidneyalumni.org.

The State Health Department reported that the COVID Infection rate continues to increase, with just fewer than 82,000 tested Wednesday and 956 were positive, for a 1.17% positivity rate.  New York’s rate, while still among the lowest in the country, has tripled in recent weeks, however hospitalizations were down to 340, ICU patients were down to 75 & those on ventilators were down to 34 & there 3 deaths from COVID Wednesday. The percentage of adult New Yorkers who have completed their vaccine dosage has increased to 67%.

The State Department of Labor announced that the number of private sector jobs in June increased by 9,800, or 0.1%, to over 7.4 Million people.  Prior to the pandemic, there were 8.2 Million New Yorkers in Private Sector jobs that number dropped to 6.9 Million last year.   New York’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased 1/10th to 7.7% in June.

Organizers for The Ron Palmer Memorial Scholarship Fund concert fundraiser announced that the concert has been moved this Saturday indoors to the Norwich American Legion on Sheldon Street in Norwich, due to expected wet weather.  The Concert will feature many local musicians & the show is scheduled from 12:00 noon to 7:00pm.  Organizer & Local musician Bruce Beadle told WCDO News about the legacy of Ron Palmer & how this scholarship came about:

Beadle said that Tickets are on sale for $15 each pre-sale at the Hidden Springs Brewhaus, The Blarney Stone Pub, Taylor’s Country House, Rita’s Tavern, the Norwich VFW and the Artist’s Palette, tickets will also be available at the door for $20.   Palmer was a well-known local musician who toured & recorded with Harry Chapin in the 70’s, more information about the scholarship or the fundraiser is available at 244-5481.

The Calvary Community Care Program’s next Food Distribution will be held today at 75 Calvary Drive in Norwich.  The program is open to the public starting at 5:00 PM.
