38 year old Martin Matias of Greene was sentenced in Broome County Court Wednesday to 8 years in State Prison, followed by 3 years of post-release supervision for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. On October 13, 2023, Matias was stopped for having improper license plates, he was in possession methamphetamine, along with a digital scale and packaging materials, he admitted that he intended to sell the illegal drugs.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 28 year old Dalton Nelson Monday for several counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & 2 counts of Criminal Using Drug Paraphernalia. Deputies responded to a suspicious person’s complaint in the Town of Norwich. Upon arrival, deputies made contact with Nelson and several other subjects, they noticed several abnormal behaviors from Nelson and observed drug paraphernalia in plain view of the Nelson vehicle, deputies located crystal methamphetamine & fentanyl, along with wax envelopes, and small plastic bags to be used as packaging material. Nelson was arraigned in Centralized Arraignment where was released on his own recognizance.

The Broome County Corrections Academy will hold its graduation ceremony Friday morning for the Class of 2024 at the Holiday Inn in Downtown Binghamton. This year, 21 graduates will officially earn the rank of Officer, after 3 months of training, learning defense tactics, studying law, and more on their way to a career in the Correctional Facility.

20 year old Payton Gendron of Kirkwood, who killed 10 Black people at a Buffalo supermarket, may be exempt from getting the death penalty, as he was only 18 at the time of the attack. A 2005 Supreme Court ruling that said executing people under 18 years old was unconstitutional, Gendron’s lawyers said that new research since that ruling states that the brain is not fully developed at 18. Federal Prosecutors said that they would seek the death penalty if Gendron is convicted in a separate federal hate crimes case, next year. Gendron is serving 11 sentences of life without parole after pleading guilty to state charges of murder and hate-motivated terrorism for the May 14, 2022, shooting at a store in a largely Black Buffalo neighborhood.

New York is hosting its largest Special Olympics this weekend, when more than 1,200 athletes and coaches in the State Summer Games. The athletes will be competing in are swimming, gymnastics, power-lifting, volleyball, track and field, basketball, bowling, and tennis, at various venues around Ithaca.
