A SINGLE ENGINE PLANE CRASHED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON IN A WOODED AREA NEAR TROUT CREEK IN THE TOWN OF MASONVILLE. IT HAS BEEN LEARNED THAT A FAMILY OF 5 ALL DIED IN THE CRASH. THE FAMILY WAS IN COOPERSTOWN FOR A BASEBALL TOURNAMENT AND WERE RETURNING HOME TO THEIR HOME STATE OF GEORGIA. OVER 20 DIFFERENT EMERGENCY CREWS SEARCHED FOR THE PLANE YESTERDAY BEFORE DEBRIS WAS FINALLY LOCATED IN A HEAVILY WOODED AREA NEAR LAKE CECIL ROAD AND HERRICK HOLLOW ROAD NORTH OF TROUT CREEK. THE DECEASED WERE IDENTIFIED AS 76 YEAR OLD ROGER BEGGS, 43 YEAR OLD LAURA VAN EPPS, 42 YEAR OLD RYAN VAN EPPS AND THEIR TWO SONS, 12 YEAR OLD JAMES VAN EPPS AND 10 YEAR OLD HARRISON VAN EPPS. SEARCH TEAMS USED A HELICOPTER, DRONES AND ATV’S TO LOCATE THE CRASH SCENE. THE FAA AND THE NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION SAFETY BOARD, ALONG WITH THE NEW YORK STATE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING THE CRASH.

AREA STUDENTS WILL HAVE AGAIN HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE CAREER OPTIONS IN HEALTHCARE DURING A TWO DAY SUMMER CAMP IN AUGUST. THE PROGRAM IS HOSTED BY UHS CHENANGO MEMORIAL HOSPITAL IN NORWICH AND WILL PROVIDE STUDENTS A CHANCE FOR HANDS-ON AND EXPERIMENTAL LEARNING ACROSS A NUMBER OF HOSPITAL DEPARTMENTS. PROGRAM COORDINATOR, BECKY YACANO SAID THE PROGRAM WAS HALTED DURING THE PANDEMIC AND THEY ARE EXCITED FOR IT TO RESUME. THE PROGRAM IS DESIGNED FOR STUDENTS ENTERING 8TH & 9TH GRADES. THE COLORSCAPE CHENANGO ARTS FESTIVAL IN NORWICH WILL CELEBRATE IT’S 30TH ANNIVERSARY IN SEPTEMBER. THIS YEAR’S FESTIVAL WILL FEATURE 116 ARTISTS INCLUDING 22 FIRST TIME EXHIBITORS. COLORSCAPE WILL ALSO HAVE THREE STAGES WITH MUSICAL PERFORMERS, STORYTELLERS, JUGGLERS AND MORE. COLORSCAPE CHENANGO WILL BE HELD SEPTEMBER 7TH & 8TH THIS YEAR IN EAST AND WEST PARKS IN DOWNTOWN NORWICH.

Chenango County residents can begin signing up today for the next Household Hazardous Waste Collection day to be held on August 10th at the Chenango County Highway Garage on Rexford Street in Norwich. David Blackman of Chenango DPW told WCDO News what will be accepted this year:

Blackman said that they will not accept ammunition, asbestos, Compressed gasses, explosive materials, radioactive waste or batteries, sign ups and more information is available at 607-337-1792.

Fox Hospital’s FoxCare Center is hosting a blood drive with the American Red Cross today from 12:00 Noon until 5:00 pm, in the Conference Room 1 at FoxCare Center. The Development Chenango Corporation of Commerce Chenango was recently awarded a $600,000 grant as part of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative to be specifically used for the Downtown Norwich Small Project Grant Fund. The grants will allow for businesses to invest in the physical appearance of their building, after the construction is complete and after a review, the grant funds will be awarded.
