The American Red Cross announced that more than 13,400 people are currently housed in Shelters in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Virginia, following Hurricane Matthew. A total of more than 2,700 Red Cross disaster workers are supporting relief efforts. The Red Cross depends on donations to provide immediate relief; they can be made at redcross.org, by calling 1-800-RED CROSS-or texting the word MATTHEW to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

Binghamton Police reported that 35-Year-old Naheen Spencer of Binghamton was shot in the chest early Saturday morning near Victoria’s cafe at 153 Susquehanna Street. Binghamton Police required back up as crowd control became an issue after the shooting. Spencer was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, the investigation is continuing.

State Police & State DOT officials are reminding motorists of the state’s “Move Over” law, after a tow truck driver was killed early this morning by a tractor-trailer, while assisting a motorist with a disabled vehicle. The accident occurred near exit 29 of the Thruway near Canajoharie, the investigation is continuing.

Federal authorities arrested 27 year old Melissa Elliott of Binghamton on 14 federal charges Elliott is stealing items from mail, & for opening several bank credit card accounts & fraudulently charging over $57,000, while working at the Cortland Post Office. Elliot was released pending future court action in U.S. District court.

Broome County District Attorney Steven Cornwell announced that he has recused himself from any legal case that might come up against Broome County Executive Debra Preston. Preston faces opposition from Jason Garner in the race for Broome County Executive in the November election. Preston has not yet been charged with any offenses.

The City Clerk’s office in Oneonta announced today that the Community Development Committee meeting scheduled for Wednesday October 12th has been cancelled. The Clerk’s office stated that the meeting was cancelled due to a lack of agenda items for this month.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 33 year old Harpursville man in conjunction with the burglary of a residence in the Town of Colesville, where cash and a handgun were stolen. Donald Rowe was charged with 2nd degree Burglary, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, also 39 year old Bobbie Jo Howell of Binghamton was charged with Hindering Prosecution, for allegedly hiding Rowe at her residence & lying to officers about his location, she was released on appearance ticket to Town of Dickinson court at a later date. Rowe was arraigned and was remanded to the Broome County Jail without Bail; further action is pending in Broome County Court.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported car & tractor trailer head on collision early Friday morning on Conklin Road in the Town of Conklin. A 2016 Jeep Compass operated by 43 year old Jason Demoney of Conklin crossed over into the opposing lane and struck a tractor trailer that was stopped on the shoulder of the road. Demoney was charged with felony DWI, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Operating a motor vehicle without a required Ignition Interlock Device, plus other traffic violations, he faces court action at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 34 year old Justin Dumond of Oneonta Thursday, on 1 count of 3rd degree Assault, for allegedly assaulting another person on Leland Hull Road in the Town of Franklin in late August of 2016. Dumond was later arraigned at Franklin Town Court and was released on his own recognizance.

This week is Fire Prevention Week, according to the Fireman’s Association of the State of New York. Beginning January 1st 2017 in New York State, the sale of smoke-detecting devices powered by removable, replaceable batteries will be prohibited, & retailers will be able to sell only smoke-detecting devices with a power source that isn’t removable and lasts at least 10 years. The association also reminds new Yorkers to test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries yearly for older style smoke alarms.
