Governor Cuomo announced that a 30-member State Incident Management Team is heading to Texas today to support the response and recovery efforts in the wake of the devastation from Hurricane Harvey. The 30-member, multi-agency Team has been requested by the State of Texas Division of Emergency Management and the Texas A&M Forest Service to assist state and local officials with operational coordination, obtaining information, mapping, and logistical support for ongoing response operations.

State Police and local law enforcement agencies will be out in force this Labor Day weekend as part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” DWI campaign. Labor Day weekend traditionally results in heavy traffic volumes; State Police will maximize their DWI enforcement efforts, with sobriety checkpoints & unmarked patrol vehicles on state highways. Police will also be watching for distracted drivers, occupants who are not properly restrained and drivers that are violating the Move Over Law.

State Police arrested 37 year old Jillian Eckberg of Oneonta for Criminal Contempt & Stalking, after troopers were advised that Eckberg allegedly violated a court order of protection, by sending the protected person a series of text messages and voicemails that put him in fear. Eckberg was arraigned in town of Hartwick court and was remanded to the Otsego county jail on $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 property bond, pending action in town of Milford court.

Former Binghamton Mayor Juanita Crabb and former Binghamton Triplet Jerry Coleman will be inducted into Binghamton’s Baseball Shrine in a ceremony at NYSEG Stadium before the Binghamton Rumble Ponies game tonight at 7:05 PM. Crabb was instrumental in bringing professional baseball back to the Southern Tier in the 90’s, Coleman was a member of the 1946 Binghamton Triplets, he played for 9 seasons in the Major Leagues with the New York Yankees, appearing in 6 World Series, he was MVP in the 1950 Fall Classic. Coleman also spent more than 4 decades calling games for the San Diego Padres. Binghamton’s Baseball Shrine has 65 members currently.

Delaware Valley Humane Society & the Penguin Ice Cream & Snack bar of Masonville will hold their 2nd Annual “Licks & Licks” fundraiser At the Penguin on State Route 8 in Masonville today from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Humane Society Director Erin Johnson told WCDO News that they are also accepting donations at the shelter & in Oneonta, to assist with the Houston Texas shelter dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey:

Governor Cuomo announced that lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on state highways will be suspended until Tuesday morning at 6:00 AM to accommodate travelers during the busy Labor Day holiday weekend. Most construction projects will be suspended, but some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs.

State Police arrested 31-year-old Christen Young of Unadilla for Resisting Arrest, Stalking, Criminal Contempt and Harassment. Young allegedly violated a court order of protection, & she had been in a course of conduct that caused the protected person to fear for his employment and career. Young physically resisted being arrested and handcuffed; she kicked a trooper in the ankle at Police Barracks. Young was arraigned and was remanded to the Delaware county jail on $1,500 cash bail or $3,000 property bond. She faces action in Kortright, Unadilla & Oneonta courts shortly.

State Police arrested 37-year-old Edward Shelton & 22-year-old Cheyenne Koban of Port Crane for Grand Larceny, after troopers were advised of a theft of a .22 caliber rifle from a home in the town of Fenton. Shelton and Koban allegedly took the rifle without permission when they moved out of the home, they were arraigned in the town of Fenton court and released without bail required. Their next court dates are pending.

Governor Cuomo requested that the federal government grant a Major Disaster Declaration for 15 counties impacted by flash flooding, tornados and unprecedented levels of precipitation during severe storms in late June and July. Once the declaration is granted, FEMA funding would be available to the state and eligible local governments and nonprofit organizations to support debris removal, structure repairs and emergency protective measures. Locally, Broome County was one of the 15 counties included in the request for the disaster declaration.
