The Broome County Sheriff’s Office announced that they have located Dalton Lannon in Kirkwood. Lannon was wanted on an outstanding warrant for violating his probation for criminal mischief, the Sheriff’s Office received many tips from the public after announcing that they were looking for Lannon on Wednesday.

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection, Friends of the Upper Delaware River, and the Upper Delaware River Tailwaters Coalition will hold a public information meeting to discuss the 2023 Delaware Aqueduct shutdown. DEP officials will be discussing the details of the upcoming shutdown and repair project and how it will impact the management of the Delaware River basin reservoirs and the Upper Delaware River. The Meeting will be held on April 11th from 6:00 to 7:00 PM at the Hancock Town Hall, 661 West Main Street, Hancock, a Zoom Link can also be obtained from one of the organizing agencies.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that 39 year old Richard Lance of Kirkwood, was sentenced to 1 to 3 years in State prison after entering a plea of guilty to Failure to Comply with the New York State Sex Offender Registration Act. During August of 2022, Lance reported to law enforcement that he was residing at an address in the Village of Johnson City, while he was actually residing at the Dell Motel on Upper Court Street. Lance was convicted of a 3rd degree Rape in 2008 in Broome County.

Delaware County District Attorney’s Office announced that 24 year old Patrick Combs of Grand Gorge pleaded guilty to Grand Larceny and Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, in Delaware County Court. Combs stole over $3,000.00 from the Roxbury Country Store, also, on January 15th, he operated a motor vehicle on State Highway 30, while impaired by drugs. Combs will be sentenced to 1-3 years in state prison for his conviction of Grand Larceny & 364 days in jail for driving while his ability was impaired by drugs, the sentences will run concurrently.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 35 year old Rex Jordan for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, DWI, Unlawful Fleeing in a Motor Vehicle, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation & Numerous other Vehicle and Traffic violations. An Otsego County Sheriff’s deputy and State Parks Police officer observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on State Highway 205, Jordan failed to comply and became involved in a 1 car motor vehicle accident, he was taken to Bassett Hospital. Police discovered that the vehicle had been reported stolen out Oneonta. Jordan was discharged from Bassett before charges were filed, A warrant was issued & he was located by the Oneonta City Police Department who arrested him on unrelated charges. Jordan was processed and lodged in the Otsego County Correctional Facility, Additional charges are pending.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 34 year old Emario Lynch of the Bronx in the town of Morris for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia. Deputies observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. Deputies stopped the vehicle a short time later and found it to have switched plates and no insurance, Lynch was also found to possess crack cocaine and MDMA. Lynch was released on an appearance ticket & is set to appear in the Town of Morris Court at a later date.

2 Broome County residents are facing 20 felony charges after being apprehended by Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies following an armed robbery in the Town of Chenango that led to an extended vehicle and foot pursuit through Johnson City and Endwell. Deputies responded Wednesday to a report of a robbery and assault on Dimmock Hill Road in the Town of Chenango. Deputies determined that 39 year old Alex Shoga of Binghamton, entered the residence displaying a handgun with 27 year old Kristin Silvanic of Endicott. 1 of the victims stolen tablets allowed deputies to track the suspects in Johnson City, where Deputies converged on the area and encountered the suspect vehicle, after a short pursuit, the suspects were taken to the Broome County Sheriff’s Office Central Arraignment and charged with the following Robbery, Burglary, criminal Use of a Firearm, tampering with physical evidence & criminal possession of stolen property, among many other charges,

Delaware County District Attorney’s office announced that 47 year old James Amato, also known as Tony Amato of Downsville was arraigned on an Amended Violation of Probation Petition in Delaware County Court. Amato is accused of possessing drugs on February 18th in the Town of Colchester and a hearing was scheduled for April 3rd. Amato was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility without bail, he was serving a sentence of probation supervision for his February 2022 convictions of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, If his probation supervision sentence is revoked, he faces up to 9 years in State Prison.

19th District Congressman Marc Molinaro announced over $10 million in federal funding for various local organizations. Greater Opportunities for Broome and Chenango, Inc. is receiving $2,744,923 for its Head Start Program, Cornell University is receiving $3,792,922 for pharmacology research and $776,752 for allergy and immunology research. SUNY Binghamton is receiving $783,365 for alcohol abuse treatment research & The Family Health Network of Central New York, Inc. is receiving $2,300,207 to support the continuation of care.

The State Labor Department announced private sector jobs in the state increased over the month by 21,200, or 0.3%, to 8,233,700 in February. The State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held constant at 4.2% in February 2023. The State’s labor force increased by 14,500. & the labor force participation rate increased slightly to 60.6% in February.

The Delaware County District Attorney office announced that 37 year old Douglas Rodriguez pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court to Criminal Contempt, after violating a court order of protection by phone several times, and for trying to convince that person not to testify against him. Rodriguez was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $35,000 cash bail pending sentencing on April 10th.

The Delaware County District Attorney’s office announced that 50 year old Kristopher Surdis of Kingston, appeared in Delaware County Court on March 20, 2023 and pleaded guilty to one count of Falsely Reporting an Incident. Surdis was arrested by the Colchester Police Department for allegedly calling the Downsville Country Store and reporting a bomb threat. After being arraigned on a Superior Court Information, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to time already served in jail and also imposed a 3-year Conditional Discharge, which requires Surdis undergo a mental health evaluation, and comply with any treatment recommendations for the next three years, if he violates the terms, he could be re-sentenced to a term of 7 years in jail.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office announced that 45 year old Kendra Barrett of Burlington Flats, was arrested for DWI, Aggravated DWI, Speed not reasonable and prudent, Driving on the shoulder, Open Container along with several other charges, following a motor vehicle accident in the Town of Pittsfield. Barrett was issued appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Pittsfield Court at a later date.

The United States Department of Justice announced Tuesday that 30 year old Shelby Ortiz of Maryland, New York was sentenced to serve 15 years in prison and a 20-year term of supervised release, for distributing child pornography. Ortiz also will be required to register as a sex offender upon her release from prison. Ortiz pleaded guilty in October 2022, she admitted that she subjected a 7-month-old boy to sexual contact which was video recorded and sent to to a person living in Florida with whom she was participating in an online and telephone dominant/submissive sexual relationship. The case was investigated by U.S. Homeland Security, the Oneonta Police Department, and the State Police

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office announced that 27 year old Brandon Morse of Edmeston was charged with cashing a stolen check last month was arrested again over the weekend for falsely reporting an incident to law enforcement. Morse is accused of lying to authorities about a man outside of his residence with a gun. Prior to the February arrest, Morse allegedly stole a $3,500 check from a local business and cashed it illegally. Morse was released with an appearance ticket and is due back in court at a later date.

Delaware County Board of Supervisors were notified that the federal civil rights suit filed against the County by former Social Services Commissioner Dana Scuderi-Hunter, was dismissed by the U.S. District Court Monday. Scuderi-Hunter had filed the civil rights suit last year, claiming that the County had violated her 1st Amendment rights; that she was denied due process as part of her 2019 dismissal; and that the County’s actions were retaliatory as a result of her testimony during a Family Court proceeding. U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence Kahn, ordered the claims made by Scuderi-Hunter be dismissed on the basis that the claims had already been litigated and decided by the State Appellate Division in February 2022, she additionally appealed that decision, which was denied last June, she then sought an appeal from the State Court of Appeals which was also denied. Judge Kahn also dismissed Scuderi-Hunter’s claims that County Attorney Amy Merklen had a conflict of interest in carrying out her duties as assigned.

The Village of Sidney Police Benevolent Association endorsed Acting Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith in this year’s race for the the Delaware County District Attorney’s Position. The Association stated that they reached this decision following an increase in communication, transparency & compassion from the DA’s office & Staff since Smith became the Acting DA January 1st. Smith faces a primary in June from fellow Republican Joe Ermeti of Sidney, who announced his candidacy recently for the DA position.

Delaware County District Attorney’s office announced that 71 year old Vincent Balsamo of Walton was arraigned on a sealed indictment in Delaware County Court Monday. The Indictment charges Balsamo with 2nd degree Manslaughter, 2nd degree Assault & Reckless Endangerment, for repeatedly choking, strangling & slapping & striking 52 year old April Kestner of Honesdale Pennsylvania at his residence in the Town of Walton in December 7th of 2022. Balsamo faces 5 to 15 years in jail on the Manslaughter charge, he was sent to the Delaware County Correctional facility on $50,000 cash bail or $150,000 bond.

The City of Oneonta announced that there will be one lane traffic at the intersection of Main Street and Gardner Place in order to tie the new sewer pipe into an existing sanitary sewer manhole. Temporary traffic signals with stop bars will be used to direct traffic and maintain a steady flow. The New York State Department of Transportation is advising motorists to expect daily single lane closures along both directions of State Route 434 (Vestal Parkway) between Murray Hill Road in the Town of Vestal and Pennsylvania Avenue in the City of Binghamton, weekdays from 6:30 am. to 6 pm. through approximately October 15. The lane closures are necessary to facilitate construction of a multi-purpose pedestrian path.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to disabled vehicle on County Highway 26 in the Town of Hamden. During the course of the investigation Sheriff’s Deputies identified the driver as 21 year old Edwards Khali of Delhi, Deputies discovered that Khali’s vehicle was suspended due to an insurance lapse. Khali was charged with with Operating a Vehicle with a Suspended Registration & Unregistered Vehicle, he was released on an appearance ticket, and was directed to appear before the Town of Hamden Court at a later date to answer for the charge.

A.O. Fox Hospital and Bassett Healthcare Network announced that FoxCare Fitness in Oneonta will be closing permanently as of June 1 for Gym memberships, Spokesperson Gabby Argo told WCDO News that the pandemic made things harder for the facility to remain open as a Gym:

Argo said that Bassett has been discussing a possible collaboration with the Oneonta YMCA but so far no agreement has been reached. The last day of operations at FoxCare Fitness will be May 31.

Walton Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire Monday at 34 Mead Street in the Village of Walton. A Walton Assistant Chief who was passing by and notified 911, of smoke showing & a woman on the 2nd floor attempting to escape, the assistant chief was able to assist her in exiting the home. Mutual aid was promptly dispatched from Trout Creek and Delhi Fire Departments & the FAST team from Franklin. 1 firefighters was injured inside & was safely removed, he was transported to DVH where he was further evaluated, treated and later released. The fire was under control in about 90 minutes, The 2nd and 3rd floors were deemed a total loss. The first floor suffered extensive heat, smoke and water damage

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a disabled vehicle on State Highway 28 in the Town of Franklin, 23 year old Devon Finch of Andes, had been operating a motor vehicle in an intoxicated state, Deputies arrested and charged Finch with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Finch was released on an appearance ticket and directed to appear at the Town of Franklin Town Court at a later date.

The City of Oneonta announced that a safety concern on the exit ramp in the City’s Parking Garage located on Market Street, The ramp was immediately closed Monday and a structural engineer brought in , who advised that repairs to the ramp are required before it can be safely re-opened to vehicular traffic. The top level of the parking garage and the exit ramp will remain closed until those repairs can be made. Also, City officials announced that their contractor, R.B. Robinson Contracting, will begin construction for Gardner Place Street Reconstruction project on Wednesday, This project will continue thru the end of June 2023. Work includes replacement of sanitary and storm sewer mains, including new sewer laterals to residents and businesses, and full street reconstruction including some sidewalks and curbs followed by final restoration and stripping.

Former Assistant to Former Broome County District Attorney James Worhach was sentenced to 2 to 4 years in prison. Worhach served under previous DA Steven Cornwell, In January, Worhach pleaded guilty to Grand Larceny after admitting he stole more than $1,000 from 2016-2019 from the Broome County government. Worhach was also ordered to pay $5,727.75 in restitution to Broome County plus a fine of $1,000.

A State DEC Environmental Conservation Police Officer is credited with saving an elderly couple from their burning car in Downsville on March 7th. En Con Officer Doig noticed flames shooting out near the exhaust and gas tank of the vehicle, he notified Delaware County 911, approached the vehicle & safely removed 2 elderly individuals from the car. Officer Doig grabbed his patrol car fire extinguisher, and put out the fire. The Downsville Fire Department arrived a short time later and determined the vehicle had a leaking gas tank and could have become engulfed in flames at any moment. The couple were unaware the car caught fire, there were no injuries reported.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office welcomed 27 new Corrections Officers at a ceremony at SUNY Broome Community College, including 7 women. The 27 officers was the largest group of new Corrections Officers in the history of the Sheriff’s Office, freshman Sheriff Fred Akshar stated that it was a priority to bolster the number of Corrections officers as soon as possible, when he took office in January.

Bassett Healthcare Network announced today that masks are no longer required for patients, visitors, or staff members across most areas of the health system. 1 exception is in Bassett’s skilled nursing facilities at A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Valley Residential Services, and Valley Health Services, where masks will still be required for all employees and visitors. Long-term care facilities continue to follow stricter guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) based on community transmission rates to protect residents.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 48 year old Charles Bodie of Edmeston for 2nd degree Rape, Criminal Sex Act, Dissemination of Indecent Material to Minors, Obscenity, & Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Bodie is accused of engaging in sexual relationship with a minor for several months, allegedly sent indecent material to the minor while he was employed outside of the State, and then Homeland Security was requested to assist. Bodie was located and arrested & he was returned to New York, he was turned over to investigators and was being held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await arraignment. Additional charges are expected.

Charlotte Bennett has filed a complaint in State Court claiming that the State is liable for Cuomo’s alleged sexual harrassment of her & against the actions of Cuomo’s top aides for failing to take corrective action after she reported the abuse. Bennett had previously filed a lawsuit against Cuomo, who has denied the allegations.

The Oxford Girls Basketball team finished the 2022-23 season with an appearance in the Class-D state championship game on Sunday in Troy. The Blackhawks fell to Hammond from Section 10 in the title game but earned an exciting semifinal victory on Saturday over Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons from Section 2. Madalyn Barrows was the star of the weekend for Oxford as she tallied 43 points, 19 rebounds, 12 steals & 10 assists over the two games. She did all this while being sick and only being able to eat crackers and drink pedialyte. The Blackhawks finish the season at 22-6 and they were the first Chenango County Girls Basketball team to make the state finals since B-G did in 1999. Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 45 year old Leo Guerrero of the Town of Otsego, for criminal mischief & Harassment, following the report of a domestic dispute on March 5th. Guerrero is accused of taking the victim’s phone to prevent the victim from contacting 911 & subjecting the victim to unwanted physical contact, he was released on his own recognizance following arraignment and the issuance of an order of protection.

Local sales tax collections in New York state increased by 14.1% in February compared to the same month in 2022, according to an analysis released today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Overall, local collections totaled $1.64 billion, up $203 million compared to the same time last year. New York City’s collections totaled $718 million, an increase of 11.6%, or $74.5 million, over February of 2022. All counties experienced strong increases in February collections, with most seeing double-digit growth.

Joe Ermeti of Sidney announced his candidacy for Delaware County District Attorney, the position is on the ballot this year following the election of former District Attorney John Hubbard to the position of County Court Judge. Ermeti has been an attorney for more that 30 years of experience as an attorney, he has served as Town of Sidney Attorney, Village of Bainbridge Attorney, and Otsego County Assistant Public Defender, and operated his own law office in Sidney from 1993 until 2019. Former Otsego County Sheriff Donald Mundy has passed away. Mundy served as the Sheriff from 1993 until 2006, he also founded the Otsego County Law Enforcement Academy in 1995 which still trains Law Enforcement Officers throughout the region, he also served as a New York State Trooper from 1963 to 1985.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 23 year old Caitlyn Crandall of Sidney after a warrant was issued for her arrest by the Delaware County Family Court. Deputies arrested Crandall Wednesday afternoon, she was arraigned at the Village of Sidney Court & was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on no bail, and was directed to appear in Family Court when it was next in session.

The American Red Cross has 2 area Blood Drives today. Delaware County Sheriff’s office arrested 2 people following an investigation of a motor vehicle accident. On Monday night, Deputies responded to a 1 car motor vehicle accident with injuries on State Highway 206, near Davis Road in the Town of Walton. 1 vehicle left the roadway, struck a tree, Deputies made contact with the driver, 41-year-old Christine Falsetta of Sidney, she was charged with Driving while ability impaired by drugs, Aggravated Unlicensed Operator and Moving from a lane unsafely, Falsetta was released on tickets returnable to the Town of Walton Court at a later date. Falsetta was released to a third party identified as 49-year-old Shawn Smith of Sidney, a check of Smith’s driver’s license revealed his was suspended, Smith was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle as well as Failing to turn in his License to DMV and Unlicensed Operator, he was released on the uniformed traffic tickets and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Walton Court at a later date.

State Police and local law enforcement will increase patrols to combat drunk, impaired and reckless driving as St. Patrick’s Day celebrations get underway starting this weekend. This special traffic enforcement detail, which is funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, begins on Friday and runs through Sunday. Drivers can expect to encounter additional DWI patrols and sobriety checkpoints during the enforcement period. State Police will also be ticketing distracted drivers who are using handheld electronic devices and will conduct checks at retail establishments targeting underage drinking and unlawful sales to minors during the campaign.

Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that 19 year old Savon Turrell of Binghamton, pleaded guilty in Broome County Court to Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Turrell admitted that on May 3, 2022, he illegally possessed a loaded 45 caliber pistol. Binghamton Police responded to a report of shots fired with the suspects leaving the scene in a light-colored Dodge Caliber. Police tracked the vehicle to a house on Oak Street. Turrell was located & was arrested, no one was injured in the shooting. Turrell will be sentenced to 3 ½ years in New York State prison followed by 3 years post release supervision on May 19th.

Acting Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith announced that he will run for District Attorney this November. Smith became acting DA when previous District Attorney John Hubbard ran for and won the race for Delaware County judge in November. Smith is seeking the Republican Party nomination, he already has the endorsement from the County Conservative Party.

The Firefighters Association of the State of New York announced that their annual RECRUIT NY event will be held shortly across the state. Volunteer fire departments will open their doors to residents Saturday, April 22nd and Sunday, April 23rd, as part of the 14th annual RecruitNY weekend, to try to increase the numbers of firefighters. Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 29 year old Bret VanValkenburg of Bainbridge following a Burglary Investigation in the Town of Laurens. Vanvalkenburgh was charged with 2nd degree Burglary & 3rd degree Grand Larceny, VanValkenburgh allegedly entered an occupied residence on June 29th 2021 and stole a set of car keys, & stole the victim’s Chevrolet Trax, which was found abandoned in the Village of Sidney. An Otsego County Grand Jury indicted Vanvalkenburgh, who was being held in the Delaware County jail on an unrelated charge, he was arraigned in Otsego County Court this week & bail was set at $1,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond and he was returned to the Delaware County Correctional Facility.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 19 year old Jeffrey Bullis following a complaint in the Village of Unadilla. Bullis was charged with Harassment & Trespassing on February 27th. Bullis was arraigned and released & will appear in the Town of Unadilla Court on a later date.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is currently looking for Jason Delong, on an outstanding warrant. Village of Delhi Police Department arrested 43 year old Robert Smith of Walton following a recent investigation. Smith was charged with 3rd degree Grand Larceny, Petty Larceny, Auto Stripping & Making a False Written Statement. Smith was released with appearance tickets returnable to the Delhi Town Court.

The Delaware County Board of Supervisors recently approved a resolution to Suspend the Gas Tax, starting June 1st. The county’s suspension runs through March of 2024.

20 year old Zachary Mullen of Jamesville was charged with making a terroristic threat after threatening to carry out a shooting at the Tops Friendly Markets in Manlius, in a Discord social media post. The Town of Manlius Police Department arrested Mullen Saturday for making a terroristic threat, police seized guns and ammunition, also a local judge issued an Extreme Risk Protection Order against Mullen on Sunday, allowing police to seize 2 weapons from Mullen’s residence.

A Delta Airbus with 62 passenger slid off the runway at the Syracuse Airport Tuesday Morning due to the winter weather. The plane slid into the grass next to the runway, no injuries were reported.

Nicholas Tucker of Binghamton pleaded guilty to charges of Reckless Endangerment and 3rd degree Burglary, in connection with a home invasion in the Town of Union last September. Tucker threatened the occupants with a handgun & fired two shots in the air before fleeing the scene., he will be sentenced to two and a third to seven years in state prison on each charge in June in Broome County Court.
