The Chenango county sheriff’s department arrested 19-year-old Amanda Sgroi of Norwich, on an active bench warrant from Norwich city court, for failure to appear to the sheriff’s office to begin weekend sentences.  Sgroi was arraigned in town of Norwich court & was remanded to the county jail; she will appear in Norwich court at a later date to answer to the latest charges.

The chenango county sheriff’s department arrested 29-year-old Wendy Hackett of Norwich on an active bench warrant issued by Chenango county family court.  Hackett was remanded to the Chenango county jail to begin a 60-day sentence.

The Chenango county farm bureau is hosting agriculture day at the silo restaurant in Greene today.  This is the 40th anniversary of “Ag-Day”, this years theme is “Generations nourishing generations” featured speakers will discuss the importance & production of the food supply, the value of agriculture to the economy and career opportunities in farming & in related fields.

P.M. NEWS TUESDAY 3-19-13

State Police in Endwell investigated a 2-car fatal motor vehicle accident on Day Hollow Road in the Town of Union Monday afternoon.  The investigation revealed that 34-year-old Heather Shaw of Endicott lost control of her vehicle around a slight curve on Day Hollow Road, into the path of a Pick-up operated by 26-year-old Kurtis Hogdin of Binghamton.   Shaw was transported to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City where she succumbed to her injuries.  The investigation is continuing.

Governor Cuomo & state leaders are about ready to pass a state budget plan 9 to 10 days before the deadline this year.  Governor Cuomo said that the spending had zero growth over last year:

The budget totals 143 billion dollars, about 7 billion more than last years total, the increase includes federal money for disaster relief for the counties that were affected by Hurricane Sandy.

US Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced that more than $215,000 worth of federal funding would keep the area rain & river gauges online.  Federal budget cuts threatened to cut off funds for the gauges, which have become a useful tool for area forecasters and emergency management agencies to keep an eye on potential flooding.  The funding is money has now been set-aside for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to continue the program.

38-year-old Thomas Lancaster of Binghamton has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for sexually assaulting two women.  Lancaster was arrested for assaulting the 2 victims over a 2-year period in the towns of Colesville & Windsor.

State Police of have received complaints from residents in Delaware & Chenango counties who have been receiving calls, soliciting funds for either new uniforms for the troopers or for officers killed or injured in the line of duty.  New York State Police does not solicit funds; they receive funding from the state budget and from federal grants.  Police are reminding resident to be cautious about telephone solicitations of any kind, and to never give out banking or personal information from unsolicited callers.

March is Red Cross Month, and Central New Yorkers can help support the American Red Cross by joining the “Heroes for the American Red Cross” campaign.  “Heroes” is a grassroots campaign where businesses, school clubs, church groups, civic organizations and individuals seek pledges to raise at least $1,000 for the American Red Cross Southern Tier Chapter, which includes Broome, Chenango, Delaware, and Tioga counties.   The campaign will run through June, and the money raised will support Red Cross services, more information is available at 785-7207.

Last Saturday over 50 community members participated in the 6th Annual Saint Patrick’s Bowl-A-Thon at 20th Century Lanes in Sidney, to raise money for the Boys 7 Girls Club of Sidney.    More than $3,900 was raised to help support after school and summer programming at the club, which is located on the 2nd floor of the Sidney civic center on Liberty Street. State Troopers arrested 28-year-old David Childs of the town of Maine, for Operating a Motor Vehicle Impaired by Drugs, Criminal Possession of Marihuana, and 19-year-old Cassidy Canfield of Johnson City, for Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. The arrests resulted from a traffic stop in the Town of Union, Childs and Canfield were issued appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Union Court on March 26th.

State Police at Norwich arrested 53-year-old Debra Trudeau of Hubbardsville, for Driving While Intoxicated, following a traffic stop on State Route 12 in the Town of Sherburne.  Trudeau was issued Tickets returnable to the Town of Sherburne Court on March 22nd.

The Oneonta common council will hold their next regular meeting today.  The meeting will begin at 7:00 PM in the council chambers on the 2nd floor of city hall.

The Chenango county sheriffs department arrested 18-year-old Austin Demuth of Oxford Saturday, on an active arrest warrant issued by the Town of Oxford Court.  Deputies from the Chenango & Broome County Sheriff’s Offices responded to a residence in the Town of Colesville and located Demuth, he was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, following an investigation into an incident that occurred in the Town of Oxford in January, and he arraigned in the Town of Oxford Court. Demuth was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $500 cash bail & will appear in court at a later date.

Governor Andrew Cuomo and state leaders met Sunday to discuss the state budget.  Cuomo and leaders in both the State Senate & Assembly stated that they expect to pass the budget on time for the 3rd straight year, something that had not been accomplished in 30 years.  Area assemblyman Cliff Crouch said that he had a couple of concerns regarding agricultural programs that the Governor left unfounded in his executive budget:

Crouch said that the $143 billion budget could be adopted as early as this Thursday of Friday, well before the traditional April 1st deadline.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 22-year-old Charles Cartee of Norwich for Petty Larceny and 2nd degree Obstruction of Governmental Administration.   Cartee is accused of stealing the property of the victim and obstructing the Police investigation by giving police the wrong location of the stolen items.  Cartee was issued an appearance ticket and released, he will appear in the City of Norwich and the Town of Oxford court at a later date.

The town of Chenango forks fire chief Lewis Merritt has been charged offering a false instrument for filing and official misconduct, for allegedly falsifying paperwork to obtain a vehicle for personal use that had been donated to the fire company.  Merritt was taken into custody Sunday By Broome County Deputies; he was issued appearance tickets for City of Binghamton Court at a later date.

A series of workshops and presentations about energy efficiency has begun with a good turnout the to the first event, at SUNY Oneonta’s Hunt Union.   Several county agencies teamed up the workshops on how homeowners, small businesses, and non-profits can get a thorough energy assessment of their home or office at no cost.  The next workshop will be held at the Cherry Valley Community Center on Wednesday, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, other workshops are scheduled for April 10th in Morris, and April 27th in Edmeston, more information is available at 723-0110, registrations are available at energywiseotsego.eventbrite.com.

the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 32 year old Shane Manwarren of Norwich for 2 counts of 2nd degree Harassment, Resisting Arrest, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminally Possessing a Hypodermic Instrument, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell, Tampering with Physical Evidence, and Criminal Mischief 3rd Degree.   During the course of the investigation at the Norwich Motor Lodge, Manwarren shoved a police officer, resisted arrest, & damaged a patrol vehicle. During a foot chase he attempted to dispose of Heroin, prescription medication, and a hypodermic needle, all were recovered and he was found to be in possession of more Heroin.  Manwarren was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail. He is scheduled to reappear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.

The Chenango county sheriff’s department arrested 26 year old Jennifer Potter of Oneonta on an active Arrest Warrant for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Weapon and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana issued by the Town of Guilford Court.   Potter was arrested after she was questioned by Oneonta Police; she was taken into custody, was arraigned in the Town of Guilford Court & was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $2500 cash bail.  Potter is to appear in the Town of Guilford Court Tuesday.

The state DEC reminds New Yorkers that a statewide ban against burning brush takes effect this week, and lasts through mid-May.  All residential brush burning is prohibited during the state’s historically high-fire-risk period through May 14th. Officials stated that open burning is the largest single cause of wildfires in New York State.

PM NEWS FRIDAY 3-15-13

State Police have released new details about the attack that killed 47-year-old Lori Bresnahan of Liverpool and the sexual assault of a child.  Troopers said that Bresnahan, and a 10-year-old girl were leaving a gymnastics class last night when they were accosted by a man.  29-year-old David Renz allegedly bound the woman and raped the child inside the vehicle, and then drove the victim’s vehicle a short distance, where the child was able to escape and was found by a passing motorist.    Bresnahan suffered multiple stab wounds and later died at Upstate University Hospital, the child is being treated at the hospital for her injuries.  Renz was charged with 1st degree rape, 1st degree kidnapping, as well as 1st & 2nd degree murder.  The investigation is continuing.

New England Wood Pellet of Deposit was fined over $17,000 by the occupational safety & health administration, for allegedly exposing workers to hazardous conditions at their Delaware county facility.  Problems sited at the deposit plant include improper ventilation, lack of spark detection and extinguishing systems.

Assembly minority Republicans voted against raising the minimum wage to $9.00 an hour this week.  Assemblyman Cliff Crouch said that in recessionary times, it could prove to be costly:

The bill passed in the Assembly, but it’s not expected to pass in the senate, Governor Cuomo has supported the idea of an increase in the minimum wage, but not as high $9.00 an hour.

New York State Labor Commissioner Peter Rivera announced that New York still has nearly $4 million available in federal funding to help businesses hire long-term unemployed workers through the On the Job Training Program. Past grants are responsible for 445 businesses hiring 844 workers since 2011.  The grant provides training subsidies of up to $23,000 per worker, they target long-term unemployed New Yorkers who have been unemployed for 20 weeks or more and go to employers to cover 50-90 percent of training-related expenses. The Chenango County Habitat for Humanity is preparing for their 2nd annual “Souper Bowl” to be held at the Family YMCA on North Broad Street in Norwich tomorrow.  Officials are looking for donations of soup and bread from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. tomorrow, plus the public is invited to taste and evaluate more than 20 soup choices, and breads donated by the county’s restaurants. The Boys & Girls Club of Sidney will be hosting its 6th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Bowl-a-thon at 6:00 PM Saturday at 20th Century Lanes in Sidney.   The Bowl-a-thon is 1 of the Boys & Girls Club biggest fundraisers.  The Club has 450-area youth regular attending, they hope to raise more than $5,000 to continue to fund their programs.

A.M. NEWS FRIDAY 3-15-13

State Police arrested 3 people Wednesday in the Town of Middletown, after they executed a search warrant at 104 Frog Alley Road in the Town of Middletown.  Troopers arresting 57-year-old Victor Perez, 45-year-old Kris Perez, & 53 year old John Gilchrist, of Margaretville, for possession of cocaine. Troopers seized 46 packets of cocaine, as well as packaging materials, and a 12-gauge shotgun with ammunition.  Victor and Kris Perez were both charged with 3rd degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, they were arraigned in the Town of Middletown Court and were remanded to Delaware County Jail in lieu of $15,000 bail.    Gilchrist was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, He was released on an appearance ticket and ordered to appear in the Town of Middletown Court on March 28th. The investigation is continuing and more charges are pending.

The Unatego school district was forced to change last Friday night’s performance of the 15th annual student & faculty variety show to tonight at 7:00 PM.  The show will be held at the junior senior high school in Wells Bridge.  Tickets for last week’s cancelled show will be honored at tonight’s show, tickets are still available at 988-5098.  Money raised is going to help 3 area families with large medical expenses.

After 25 hours, the stand off in Herkimer with 64 year old Kurt Meyers of Mohawk ended this morning in a shoot out at the former Glory days Bar on North Main Street, State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico described how it ended:

The deceased were identified as 68 year old Harry Montgomery of Mohawk, 57 year old Michael Rancier or Herkimer, who were at John’s Barbershop in Mohawk, killed at Gaffee’s Car Wash were Thomas Stefka, an employee, and Michael Renshaw a customer, who was a 20 year veteran of the state corrections department.  Injured at the barbershop was John Seymour, who owned the shop and Dan Haslauer a customer of Seymour’s, they were listed in critical condition this morning at area hospitals.

State Troopers of Oneonta arrested 42-year-old Christopher Russo of Colliersville for Criminal Obstruction of Breathing and Harassment. The arrest resulted from an investigation into a dispute on State Route 23 in Oneonta, Russo was arraigned in the Town of Oneonta Court & faces additional court action at a later date.

State Troopers arrested 40-year-old Bryan Porth of Windsor for Felony Driving While Intoxicated, 1st degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation and 3rd degree Criminal Mischief. The arrest resulted from a traffic stop on Interstate 81 in Dickinson; Porth was arraigned in the Town of Dickinson Court and was remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.

Area lawmakers have been named to the budget conference committees in Albany. State Senator Jim Seward has been named to the education and higher education budget conference committees, Assemblyman Cliff Crouch was appointed to represent the Assembly Minority Conference on the Agriculture/Environmental Conservation/Housing Joint Conference Committee.    The conference committees are made up of 5 members from each house; their open, public meetings can be viewed at nysenate.gov.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a 17-year-old youth of Hamden for 2 counts of Reckless Endangerment, 2 counts of endangering the Welfare of a Child, and Unlawfully Fleeing from a Police Officer.  Deputies reported that on Saturday, the unidentified youth was traveling at a high rate of speed on State Highway 206 through Downsville; he failed to comply with police and fled.  Deputies reported that there were 2 other youths in the vehicle, the driver’s 15-year-old brother and a 16-year-old female.  Police followed to private road, where the 3 youths abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, but were apprehended.  The driver was also charged with Failure to Keep Right, Speed not Reasonable and Prudent, Operating in Violation of Restrictions, Failure to Use Signal and Failure to Comply With a Lawful Order.  The youth was arraigned in Colchester Town Court and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $1000 cash bail or $2000 bond.  He is scheduled to reappear at a later date.

18-year-old Christopher Delgado of the Bronx appeared in Oneonta City Court on a charge of making a terrorist threat, in February while a student at Hartwick College.  Delgado was released from custody and returned with his family to the Bronx, he was ordered to stay away from the Hartwick College campus, any violation of that order would resulting in Delgado facing additional court action & possible incarceration.
