State police reported that 82 year old Lorena Mayes of Norwich was killed from a 2-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon in the town of North Norwich. Police reported that Mayes was operating her vehicle at County Highway 32 and State Highway 12, she pulled out into the path of an SUV traveling north on Route 12. Mayes was transported to Chenango Hospital, but did not survive. A 91-year-old passenger in the Mayes vehicle was taken to Chenango Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both occupants of the SUV were taken to Basset Hospital in Cooperstown with non-life-threatening injuries.

Bassett Healthcare Network, Hartwick College, and SUNY Oneonta gathered on September 13 to inaugurate a groundbreaking workforce development partnership aimed at retaining new graduates in the region and addressing critical workforce shortages across Bassett’s network. Dr. Ibrahim said that Bassett CARES is open to graduates from all disciplines, participants may earn up to $25,000 in loan repayment stipends. SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College students may also get free or subsidized on-campus housing in the summer for matriculated students who are working for Bassett Healthcare Network during the summer months. SUNY Oneonta also plans to provide bridge housing for recent graduates for the summer directly following their graduation to ease the transition to professional life at Bassett.

The State Department of Labor announced that the number of private sector jobs in New York State increased over the month by 4,900, to 8,252,700 in August. The State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held constant at 3.9% in August, New York’s labor force participation rate increased to 61.5% in August, highest level since 2013.

Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Monday to a 911 call of a pedestrian-train accident in the Town of Union. The pedestrian, 33 year old Joey Rosa of Endwell was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives found that Rosa had been known to frequent the area and was on the tracks as the train approached. The conductor of the train attempted to signal multiple times to get Rosa’s attention, but Rosa did not move off the tracks. The engineer was unable to stop the train, and at Rosa was struck and killed. Investigators have ruled the incident an accident.

The State Department of Labor released the results of its 2023 Workforce Development Survey, and workers continue to say that flexibility in their job is the number one priority, while attracting new employees and retaining current workers remain the top challenges for businesses. The annual survey started in 2021 as an effort to understand the needs of both workers seeking employment and employers in a post-pandemic economy, with responses from over 2,400 businesses and 8,200 individuals, The report can be found at dol.ny.gov.

The CDC’s has approved of an updated COVID-19 vaccine and they are urging New Yorkers to get the shot once it is available later this week. The 2023-24 vaccine was authorized by the federal Food and Drug Administration, it is expected to be available at pharmacies and physicians’ offices, as well as other health care providers, in the coming days.

Otsego County Department of Health announced that a skunk tested positive for rabies earlier this week. 46 year old Lance Madsen of Bainbridge was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for several counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, 2 counts Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, Reckless Driving, and several other Traffic Violations. Madsen failed to comply with deputies as they were attempting to stop him for traffic violations, he drove his vehicle in a reckless manner, at high rates of speed. Madsen was eventually taken into custody after stopping his vehicle in the driveway of his residence, he was found to have Methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia, he was arraigned and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail.

US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has forwarded legislation to continue to fund child care programs, as a deadline is approaching that could potential shut down many child care facilities:

The impending drop-off in federal funding would lead to over 250,000 children in New York State losing access to child care, would force over 5,700 child care centers across the state to close, forcing parents to cut their work hours or leave the workforce entirely and costing them $846 million in earnings as a result.

The State Cannabis Control Board voted to finalize the Office of Cannabis Management’s proposed regulations for the adult-use cannabis market, a larger group of individuals and small businesses across the state will now be able to apply for cultivator, processor, distributor, microbusiness, and retail dispensary licenses beginning on October 4th.

A commission created last year to enforce ethics rules for New York state’s employees and elected officials violates the state’s constitution because it is too independent, New York Supreme Court Justice Thomas Marcelle said it would require an amendment to the state constitution to give that sort of power to an independent body. The ruling came in a lawsuit filed by former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who has been fighting an attempt by the Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government to force him to forfeit $5 million he received for writing a book about his administration’s efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.

State Police announced that No arrests were made during an Underage Drinking Initiative in Troop “C” in Chenango County Monday. During the initiative, 14 businesses were checked. All 14 were in compliance and did not sell alcohol to an under-aged operative. the businesses that were checked were located in Norwich, Oxford & Greene.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office and the Broome County Department of Social Services, announced that a homeless man that was living in a bus stop in the town of Dickinson, has returned home to his family. Earl Sutton had been living at the bus stop shelter where numerous people attempted to help him access various community services and find a permanent residence, but he refused any assistance. Sheriff Fred Akshar directed the Broome County Sheriff’s Office team to locate and contact Sutton’s family, they found his Uncle James Sutton, in Toledo, Ohio, Officers found out that Earl Sutton had been missing for 2 years, earlier he had a bike accident that left him Mentally challenged, he had stopped taking his medication and disappeared. On September 8th, Earl Sutton went home to Ohio.

In July, uniformed Broome County Deputies and members of the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force conducted a targeted enforcement within the Village of Endicott, focusing on the trafficking and distribution of weapons and narcotics. The targeted crime response during that month yielded a grand total of 20 felony arrests and 19 misdemeanor arrests were made, nearly all involving weapon and narcotics possession or distribution. 3 illegal shotguns and 1 illegal handgun were also confiscated during the targeted enforcement period in the Village of Endicott. During the same time frame, The Task Force also conducted 3 search warrants in the Village of Endicott, leading to a total of 17 felony charges and 10 Misdemeanors.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a fatal pedestrian-train accident that occurred Monday night near the area of South Kelly Avenue in Endwell and resulted in the death of an adult male. The Utica City School District today released the name of the security officer who was shot after a football game at Proctor High School. District Officials said that Jeff Lynch was shot Saturday, he was taken to an area hospital, he is recovering & is expected to be released shortly according to the Utica Police Department. An unidentified 16 year old male was charged with 2nd degree attempted Murder, Criminal possession of a weapon, among other similar charges.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 45 year old Jolene Hynes of Stamford, following a domestic incident investigation. On July 1st, Deputies responded to a 911 call for a Domestic Dispute in the Town of Harpersfield, Hynes was arrested for Endangering the Welfare of a Child, she also attempted to conceal and destroy evidence by throwing away narcotics and drug paraphernalia. After Deputies received the results from the State Crime Lab, Hynes was additionally charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Evidence Tampering, she was Hynes was released on Appearance Tickets for Town of Harpersfield Court at a later date.

State Police arrested 63 year old Thomas Brick of Fenton, for 3 counts of 3rd degree Grand Larceny. An investigation began in early July after Troopers learned that Brick accepted money from a victim in April for 3 separate contracting jobs for over $24,000, but Brick did not complete the contracting work at 1 location and didn’t start work or purchase materials for the other 2 properties. Brick was processed & was transported to the Chenango County Jail for arraignment.

Delaware County Sheriff’s office arrested 61 year old Ila Husarenko of Walton for DWI following a Motor Vehicle Accident Friday. Deputies responded to a 1 car motor vehicle accident with injuries on County Highway 21, Town of Walton. Deputies observed that a vehicle had left the roadway and entered into a ditch alongside the roadway. Husarenko was arrested for DWI & on a number of lesser charges & was transported to Delaware County Correctional Facility for arraignment.

The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force executed search warrant in the Village of Endicott on Thursday, they arrested Eric Dudley of Endicott for 2 Counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, several counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property & 2 Counts of Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia. Investigators seized Crack Cocaine, a Loaded stolen Handgun, A Loaded Shotgun, Ammunition, A High-capacity Magazine, plus a Scale, and packaging materials used for weighing, and packaging narcotics for sale & $657 in cash. Dudley was taken to Central Arraignment at the Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility.

State Police at Richfield Springs were dispatched to assist the Richfield Fire Department with a fire in a 2nd-floor bathroom at Richfield Springs Central School. An investigation revealed that a 15-year-old male intentionally lit a soap dispenser on fire, which caused property damage only. No injuries were reported. The juvenile was charged with 2nd degree Arson.

Attorney General Letitia James today secured an agreement with one of the nation’s largest insulin manufacturers, Novo Nordisk, to cap the price of insulin at $35 per monthly prescription for uninsured New Yorkers for five years. The agreement also requires Novo Nordisk to implement a program with pharmacies to let uninsured patients know before they pay that they are eligible for the insulin cap. Today’s agreement follows earlier agreements with two other large insulin makers, Eli Lilly and Sanofi, to cap insulin prices at $35 a month for uninsured New Yorkers.

NYSEG officials reported that many customers were still without power this afternoon around the tri-county region, following last night’s powerful thunderstorms. NYSEG Reported about 1200 without power in Broome county, about 600 in Otsego County, 120 in Chenango County & about 25 in Delaware County, as crews continue to restore power in areas that had downed trees & power lines.

After hundreds of calls to the Oneonta Police Department to respond to various Issues at the Town House Inn on Main Street in Oneonta, City officials have decided to try to shut the motel down, Oneonta Mayor Mark Drnek told WCDO news what they are doing:

In recent weeks, Oneonta Police have responded to a shots fired complaint, there was also a fatal overdose there recently, among the 400 incidents reported at the Town House Inn. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded on August 13th, to a report of vandalism in the Town of Kortright. Delaware County District Attorney’s office announced that 32 year old Nicholas Durbin formerly of Deposit, appeared for arraignment on a 4-count indictment in Delaware County Court. Durbin is charged with Sexual Abuse & Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child, for allegedly sexually abusing a 4-year-old child on 4 separate occasions, he pleaded not guilty to the charges, and he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $50,000.00 cash bail.

State Police increased patrols throughout the Labor Day weekend and ran a special enforcement from Friday, September 1, through Monday, September 4th. All Area Law Enforcement agencies are reminding area motorists that school is back in session this week. They remind motorists that it is illegal to pass a school bus with its flashing lights on while they are collecting or dropping off students before & after school. They also remind motorists that posted speed limits at schools are inn effect weekdays while school is in session, from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. According to the New York Association for Pupil Transportation, an estimated 50,000 motorists pass stopped school buses with red lights flashing statewide each school day.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 49 year old Patrick Stanton of Deposit after the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force executed search warrant in Deposit. On August 31, 2023, the Task Force executed a narcotics search warrant at 35 Front Street in Deposit, Stanton was arrested on a variety of drug charges, Officers seized Methamphetamine, Scales, and packaging materials used for weighing and packaging narcotics for sale. Stanton was taken to Central Arraignment at the Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility.

Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar announced a further expansion of visitation hours at the Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility effective immediately. Sheriff Akshar expanded visiting hours to 30 hours per week earlier this year, the latest increase brings the visitation time to 47 hours each week. The visitation expansion coincides with increased staffing levels at the Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility after a successful hiring campaign for new and transferring Corrections Officers. Delaware County Sheriff’s arrested 75 year old Alan Donner of Roscoe for Criminal Mischief. On August 26th, Deputies responded to a Criminal Mischief Complaint in the Town of Colchester, Donner had intentionally damaged another person’s vehicle following a verbal altercation while at the Mobil Gas Station in Downsville, Donner was released on appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Colchester Court at a later date to answer the charges.

In about 2 weeks, the attorney for the Reporter Newspaper based in Delhi, owned by Randy & Kimberly Shepard, may file a lawsuit against Delaware County for their decision to remove the county designation from the Reporter to the Hancock Herald, solely because County Officials did not like the reporting by Lillian Browne on County Activities. Attorney Heather Murray explains the possible lawsuit argument:

State Police have arrested 39 year old Kysha Radcliff of Dryden, for 1st degree Kidnapping, in connection with the kidnapping & murder case of Thomas Rath of Ithaca. Rath disappeared from a homeless encampment earlier this year, he remains were found last month & so far the investigation has resulted in 11 arrests. State Police said that the investigation continues.

State Police responded to a reported stabbing on a Trailways Transportation Bus, traveling from New York City to Binghamton. The bus was on State Highway 17 in the town of Deposit when the incident was reported and indicated that a female had been stabbed numerous times. State Police said that 32 year old Dominique Holloman of New York City fled when the bus stopped, he was located & was charged with 2nd degree Assault he was transported to the Delaware County Jail for Centralized Arraignment. The injured female had been traveling with Holloman, she was treated at Wilson Hospital for a non-life threatening injury.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 43-year-old Dennis Ryder of Branford, Connecticut for driving with a suspended New York State Driver’s license. On Friday afternoon, Deputies observed a vehicle speeding on State Highway 97 in the Village of Hancock, they conducted a traffic stop, a check of Ryder’s driver’s license revealed that his driving privileges were suspended. Ryder was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle & Speeding, among other charges, Ryder will appear in the Village of Hancock Court at a later date to answer the charges.

2 people were hospitalized after a motorcycle & pickup truck accident on Atwell Hill Road in the Town of Windsor. Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded on Thursday at approximately 7:00 pm, 26 year old Cody Beavers of Windsor was operating his motorcycle at a high rate of speed and failed to keep right around a curve, he struck a pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction. Beavers and his passenger, 23 year old Megan Monteforte of Hallstead, Pennsylvania were ejected from the motorcycle, both were wearing helmets but sustained serious injuries & were taken to UHS Wilson Medical Hospital & were later transferred to a Syracuse Hospital by Life Net. Beavers was found to have been driving an unregistered and uninsured motorcycle without a license and was issued multiple Uniform Traffic Tickets.

Oneonta Police Department responded Thursday to the report of several loud popping sounds at the Town House Inn at 318 Main Street. Officers discovered that a firearm had been discharged in the parking lot, no firearms were found at the scene. The Investigation indicates that no individuals were injured and unoccupied vehicles had been struck by the projectiles. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call the Oneonta Police Department at (607) 432-1111.

Authorities recovered the body of 61 year old Dr. Chandra Prakash Joshi in Middlefield along the Natty Bumppo’s Cave trail, Investigators beleive that Dr. Joshi fell 3 days prior off of a cliff area and died from his injuries, he was a senior physicist at Bassett Cancer Institute. The sheriff’s office dispatched patrols in cooperation with Cooperstown Village Police and state Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers, after a co-workers reported that the Doctor had failed to show up for work, and has planned to go hiking, his car had been in the parking lot, the cause of death was accidental.
