A Town of Unadilla resident was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property. Deputies & State Police arrested 39 year old Jacob Conklin on an active Arrest Warrant during a routine traffic stop in the Town of Bainbridge, he is accused of stealing a 1997 Toyota from a driveway in Afton and scrapping it for cash at Gary’s U-Pull it in Binghamton. Conklin was arraigned in the Town of Afton court and is being held in the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $10,000.00 cash bail. Conklin is to reappear in the Town of Afton court on a later date.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Department arrested an Afton man for 4th degree Grand Larceny. 45-year-old Russell Davis was charged following an investigation in which Davis allegedly stole a motor vehicle from a Town of Norwich woman and failed to pay her for the vehicle. Davis is to appear in the Town of Norwich court at a later date

Delaware County sheriff’s Deputies investigated an accident on May 9th on county route 21 in the town of Walton, they have arrested 51 year old William Davis of Franklin for Driving While Intoxicated, Failure to Keep Right and Refusal to take Breath Test. Davis was arraigned in Town of Hamden Court and remanded to Delaware County Jail on $500 bail and is to appear in Town of Walton Court at a later date.

The New York State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for April. The state’s unemployment rate was 5.7%, the private sector job count increased by 126,000 over the last year, to 7,736,400. Locally, Broome County had 6% unemployment, Chenango County had 5.7%, Delaware County was at 6% and Otsego County had 5.2% unemployment.

State Police arrested 24-year-old Monty Ramey of Binghamton for Public Lewdness. The arrest occurred after a Trooper responded to a complaint of a man exposing himself in a lewd manner in a boat in the Town of Windsor. Ramey was issued a ticket returnable to the Town of Windsor Court in June.

Delaware County deputies arrest 34-year-old Joseph Galletta of Walton for Criminal Obstruction of Blood circulation or Breathing. Galleta is accused of impeded the blood circulation and breathing of another subject during a domestic incident in the Town of Tompkins, he was arraigned in the Town of Walton court and remanded to the Delaware County Correctional facility on $500 cash bail, pending court action in the Town of Tompkins court on June 4th.

State Police arrested 43-year-old Matthew Smith of Deposit for Criminal Possession of a Firearm. This arrest occurred after a Trooper was conducting an unrelated investigation at a residence on Main Street in the Town of Deposit, t was determined that Smith illegally possessed a loaded semi-automatic handgun he was arraigned at the Town of Deposit Court and released to reappear on June 5th.

Congressman Chris Gibson has been recognized for his bipartisan statesmanship in the House of Representatives. Gibson ranked first in the new Bipartisan Index released this month by the Lugar Center, a policy organization, Senators and Members of Congress were scored based on how often the bills they introduced were co-sponsored by members of the other party and how often they joined bills sponsored from across the aisle.

State Police at Oneonta arrested 37-year-old Wade Johnson of Schenevus, for Driving While Intoxicated with a B.A.C. result of .16%, twice the legal limit. The arrest occurred after a traffic stop for driving a motorcycle without a helmet on and for failing to keep right on County Route 9 in the Town of Davenport. Johnson was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Davenport Court on June 9th.

P.M. NEWS TUESDAY 5-26-15

The 53rd General Clinton Canoe Regatta featured 4 days of canoe racing, over the Memorial Day weekend, over 1000 paddlers from North America, competed including yesterday’s 70-mile endurance races, from Cooperstown to Bainbridge. Andy Triebold from Michigan & Steve Lajoie from Quebec won the pr race for the 7th time together, Lajoie explained what it’s like paddling with all the amateur teams on the river:

In the new 4-person division, the local Otego Oneonta team, of Bob Wisse, Cathy Grimes, Jeff Shultis & Larry Harrison, finished 3rd, just 3 minutes behind the 2nd place team. Harrison talked about their race:

The 53rd regatta also featured rides, games, entertainment, music & fireworks throughout the weekend.

State Police responded to a Delaware County 911 report of a fatal ATV accident off of Apex Road in the Town of Tompkins. Troopers observed 36 year old Keith Stratton of Bellmore, New York deceased in a shallow creek by an overturned ATV. Troopers reported thar he had been at a family party at a home on Apex Road when he decided to take a ride on an ATV, without a helmet. Troopers beleive that he failed to make a right turn and overturned in a nearby creek & was killed on impact. Alcohol was a factor in the accident, he was pronoucned deceased at the scene.

Governor Cuomo today announced that law enforcement agencies in 17 counties participating in the state’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination initiative would receive $13.3 million to target gun violence and save lives. The initiative requires the use of proven strategies to reduce shootings and firearm-related homicides in communities served by 20 police departments in those counties. Locally, The Binghamton Police Department and Broome County District Attorney’s Office and Sheriff’s Office will share $393,944.

State Police arrested 27 year old Jonathan Robinson of Oneonta for Resisting Arrest, 2 counts of Criminal Mischief & 3 counts of Harassment. The arrest resulted from a complaint of someone damaging a vehicle and making threats at a residence on County Highway 11 in the Town of Laurens. Robinson is accused of damaging 2 vehicles, threatening people from outside & physically resisting arrest. Robinson was arraigned in the Town of Laurens Court and remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $200 cash bail pending future court action.

The City of Oneonta will be sweeping all 3 levels of the municipal parking garage, tonight at 10:00 PM through tomorrow morning at 11:00 AM. The garage will be closed on all levels during that time; lots at Dietz Street, Wall Street and the Westcott lot will all be open. State Police responded to a rollover accident that closed down a portion of I-88 Monday. Police reported that no one was injured when a pickup truck and the recreational vehicle it was towing rolled over in Oneonta, just past exit 15. Trooper’s diverted traffic off the interstate, it took about an hour for crews to clear the scene. The investigation is continuing.

State Police will be increasing patrols to ensure the safety of the traveling public this Memorial Day weekend. Troopers will be out in force cracking down on impaired drivers, enforcing distracted driver laws, and they will be looking out for reckless & aggressive drivers. Drivers can expect to see sobriety checkpoints, and more troopers on major highways during this holiday weekend, in marked & unmarked vehicles. On Memorial Day weekend in 2014 Troopers arrested more than 235 people for DWI and issued more than 12,000 tickets

State Police responded to an Otsego County 911 report of a 1 vehicle fatal accident on State Route 80 in the Town of Otsego early Thursday morning. 24 year old Brandon Lane of Prattsville lost control of a 2001 Mitsubishi, he exited the roadway, the vehicle became airborne and struck a tree on the passenger side. Lane’s front seat passenger was 21 year old Julia Levandowski of Cooperstown, she was pronounced deceased at the scene, an autopsy will be performed at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton. Lane was charged with 2nd degree Vehicular Manslaughter & DWI, he was arraigned at the Town of Otsego Court and then remanded to the Otsego County Jail with no bail set at this time. The investigation is ongoing.

Rural fire departments can now apply for $400,000 in Volunteer Fire Assistance grants, according to the State Department of Environmental Conservation. A.M. NEWS FRIDAY 5-22-15

Broome County fire investigators have released the names of the 4 family members who died in a house fire on State Line Road in the town of Vestal Thursday morning. 33-year-old Nicole Tarbox, her son, 13-year old Evyn, and her two daughters, 9-year-old Mya, and 3-year old Mariah were killed, 15 year old Shawn Tarbox survived after he jumped out of a 2nd floor window. Investigators believe that the fire originated in the first floor kitchen near a stairway, which trapped family members inside.

Broome County Fire officials reported that 4 people died early this morning in a house fire at 439 State Line Road in the town of Vestal. Fire officials said that a mother & 3 of her children were killed in that fire, one 15 year child escaped, and the father of the children was at work. the fire was called in at about 2:00 AM this morning, 5 area fire departments responded, more details will be released at the conclusion of the investigation as well as family notification..

Governor Cuomo announced that road and bridge construction projects on State highways will be suspended from 6:00 AM Friday, to 6:00 AM Tuesday, in order to accommodate travelers during the busy Memorial Day holiday weekend. Some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs. AAA predicts that of the more than 37 million people traveling more than 50 miles from home this weekend, an estimated 33 million of them will be traveling by car. Landowners & businesses along the I-88 corridor are now attending a second round of public meetings for a second pipeline proposal from Kinder Morgan, after the region already attended meeting for the Constitutition pipeline along the same pathway. Area Assemblyman Pete Lopez comments:

Governor Cuomo announced that New Yorkers can now contact the New York State HOPEline addiction referral and support service by texting 1-877-8-HOPENY. The HOPEline is a free and confidential 24-hour service that connects people who are struggling with substance abuse and problem gambling to trained professionals for assistance in times of need. The New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services has contracted with the Mental Health Association of New York to expand existing HOPEline services to include the texting feature.

The State DMV has seen a significant increase in the number of motorcycle permit holders who participate in motorcycle safety courses. DMV Deputy Commissioner Terri Egan announced that in 2014, 70% of motorcycle permits holders in New York State elected to take motorcycle safety courses, up from 51% in 2010. There are between 36,000 and 44,000 permit riders in a given year in New York State, which allows them to ride on the road under the guidance of a licensed motorcycle operator.
