Chenango County area fire departments responded to a barn fire on Newton Road in Pharsalia just after 4:00 PM yesterday At Balsam View Dairy Farm. Fire fighters from Pharsalia, McDonough, and McGraw responded, no injuries were reported, but several cows were killed in the blaze. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Town of Unadilla Highway Department announced that they will be paving Ben McCumber Road Today. The paving project will start at 6:30 AM and is expected to be completed at around 4:30 PM.

Delaware County Public Health is offering free one day training today from 8:30am-3:00 PM at SUNY Delhi, for therapists, parents, and educators. The morning session “Get Your Game On!” explores the power for play-based instruction through the implementation of cooperative learning games and identify the developmental benefits for individuals. The afternoon session titled Sensational Sensory Experiences-Enhancing Learning Opportunities through Sensory Play, to recognize the benefits of intentionally creating sensory experiences for individuals with sensory needs. Broome County Sheriff’s department reported that 1 person was killed when a disabled Jeep was struck by a tractor-trailer at 1:30 this morning on state Route 17 near Windsor. Deputies reported that a disabled Jeep stopped in the right lane of the highway was rear-ended by a tractor trailer, the Jeep & the tractor Trailer both went over an embankment. The Jeep’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene, the identity of the driver has not been released pending family notification. The tractor trailer driver suffered head injuries and was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital, the investigation is continuing.

Convicted Murderer 46 year old David Dart has been denied parole, Dart was convicted in Otsego County Court of fatally stabbing Gillian Gibbons of Milford in 1989 her body was found in her car in the lower level of the Oneonta Municipal Parking Garage. Dart will continue to serve a prison term of 25 years to life.

Oneonta Police arrested two residents on burglary & grand larceny charges. 44-year-old Courtney Griffin & 54 year old Joanne Roberts of Oneonta allegedly broke into a college student’s apartment on Main Street & stole over $3,000 worth of property. The two were charged with the 2nd degree burglary & 3rd degree grand larceny plus criminal mischief, they face court action shortly.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 26-year-old Jennifer Hinman of Sidney following a burglary investigation in the town of Sanford. Hinman is accused of unlawfully entering a home & taking property from the home on May 18th. Hinman was charged with 2nd degree burglary, she was arraigned in Fenton town court and released on her own recognizance.

The Binghamton Mets announced NYSEG Stadium would go tobacco-free starting in the 2017 season. Inside the gates, fans will no longer be allowed to use cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, e-cigarettes nor vaporizers. Tobacco users will have a special smoking area at all games outside the gates of the stadium. The tobacco-free policy will go into effect on Opening Day in April 2017.

The State Economic Development Council announced that Otsego Now has been named a recipient of several 2016 Marketing, Literature and Promotion Awards. The awards will be presented at the Awards Banquet Tonight at the 2016 NYSEDC Annual Meeting in Cooperstown. The race was added to fit in-between the rescheduled Ed Wessels race that was held last Saturday, and the General Clinton canoe regatta during the Memorial Day Weekend, according to Wessel regatta organizer Ed Curley:

Hartwick College announced that President Margaret Drugovich has accepted an offer from the Board of Trustees to continue as the school’s leader for 8 more. The new contract runs through June 30, 2024, Drugovich was appointed Hartwick’s 10th president in 2008.

The Chenango County Department of Public Works will close County Road 32, between, County Road 32C and South Oxford Bridge Road, in the Towns of Greene and Oxford on Thursday. The closure will be in place until the required culvert replacement work is completed. State Police and local law enforcement statewide will be increasing patrols to combat drunk and impaired driving this Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day is one of the busiest travel holidays of the year and police will be out in force to remove impaired and reckless drivers from our highways. The initiative starts on Friday, May 27 and runs until Monday, May 30. Drivers can expect to see sobriety checkpoints and increased patrols by State Police and local law enforcement agencies during this holiday weekend.

Local Congressman Chris Gibson announced the passage in the House yesterday of the Frank Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act, which modernizes the Toxic Substances Control Act to institute more rigorous oversight of thousands of chemicals that are used commercially. The bill updates the 40-year-old Toxic Substances Control Act by removing barriers to repeat chemical testing, mandating safety reviews of chemicals already in use, making more information available to the public, limiting animal testing whenever reliable alternatives exist, and setting deadlines for EPA decisions and compliance with restrictions, among other initiatives.


Governor Cuomo today announced that the Masters-in-Education Teacher Incentive Scholarship Program will begin accepting applications on Thursday May 26. The program provides a full SUNY or CUNY tuition scholarship to high-achieving college undergraduates or professionals for their master’s studies in education. Up to 500 new awards will be granted annually for two academic years of full-time study.

Schoharie County Judge Richard Mott finished deliberations today, he found Cal Harris NOT GUILTY of killing his estrnaged wife Michelle Harris in September 2001. Harris was convicted twice before in Tioga County Court, the 3rd jury trial ended with a deadlocked jury.

The statewide unemployment rate for April rose 1/10th to 4.9%, the State Labor Department has released the local unemployment rates for April. Chenango County equaled the state rate at 4.9%, Delaware County had a 5.5% rate & Otsego County had 4.6% unemployment.

Oneonta Mayor Gary Herzig announced that the city of Oneonta has filed an application for 10 million dollars as part of Governor Cuomo’s Downtown Revitalization initiative. Governor Cuomo announced that road and bridge construction projects on State highways will be suspended from 6:00 AM Friday, to 6:00 AM Tuesday, May 31st, in order to accommodate travelers during the busy Memorial Day holiday weekend. Some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs. AAA predicts that of the more than 38 million people traveling more than 50 miles from home this weekend, an estimated 34 million of them will be traveling by car. Travelers are reminded to check 511NY by calling 511 or by accessing 511ny.org to check road conditions.


The Otsego County Sheriff’s department is continuing the investigation into Monday’s Bank robbery at the Edmeston NBT bank branch. The suspect is described as a white male, in his mid-to-late twenties, 5 foot 7 to 5 foot ten, with a thin build, he was last seen wearing light-colored pants, a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt, dark-colored shoes, a dark-colored knit hat and dark-rimmed glasses. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office at 547-4273.

The State DOT will hold a public meeting Today, regarding plans to rehabilitate a bridge on State Route 28 in the town of Milford, The meeting will be held at Milford Central School, the Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and a formal presentation will be conducted at 7 p.m. The bridge was built in 1985 and carries State Route 28 over State Route 7 and the Norfolk Southern Railroad Main Line. The purpose of the meeting is to share and exchange information with the public regarding the project and its potential impacts, including proposed work zone traffic control options to manage traffic during construction.

Law Enforcement Agencies in Otsego County have responded to a reported Bank Robbery at the NBT Bank Branch at 1 West Street in Edmeston at about 11:30 this morning. The Edmeston Central School District & Pathfinder Village were locked down and State Police & Otsego County Sheriff’s deputies have been investigating. The Sidney Police Department arrested 43-year-old Jack Blanchard of Guilford for 2 counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance. The arrest is the result of a 2-month investigation into the sale of Cocaine in the Village of Sidney. Blanchard was arrested on an Arrest Warrant Sealed Indictment issued by Delaware County Court. He was sent to the Delaware County Correctional Facility to await arraignment on the charges.

Schoharie County Judge Richard Mott did not reach a verdict in the 4th Cal Harris Murder trial Friday. Judge Mott had deliberated for about 12 hours on Thursday & Friday; he had not reached a decision on whether Call Harris murdered his estranged wife Michelle on September 11th, 2001. Deliberations will continue on Tuesday.

Congressman Chris Gibson announced the passage in the House of an amendment he authored in support of former Navy and Marine Corps personnel and other Veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange during their service aboard vessels off the coast of Vietnam and now have serious illnesses that are directly connected to that exposure. The Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act ensures those Veterans is granted presumptive coverage for Agent Orange exposure. The House bill introduced by Congressman Gibson has 320 cosponsors from both parties, while the Senate version introduced by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has 41 bipartisan cosponsors.

The New York State DOT announced that construction work for the Prospect Mountain construction project will be performed and will require lane closures in the City of Binghamton. Beginning tomorrow, through Thursday, from 9 AM to 3:00 PM, I-81northbound/State Route 17 westbound will be reduced to 1 lane between Exit 3 and 4S for the removal of concrete barrier. The right two lanes will be closed. On Thursday, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, I-81 northbound/State Route 17 westbound Exit 4S will be closed temporarily for the removal of concrete barrier. A signed detour will be in place directing motorists around the ramp closure. All work will be performed weather permitting.

Governor Cuomo today announced $500,000 in federal funding has been awarded to the New York State Academy of Fire Science in the Southern Tier. The funding will support a crude oil training simulation for first responders. This marks the third consecutive year that the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Office of Fire Prevention and Control has been awarded this funding. The Academy trains over 6,000 emergency services providers from across the state in over 130 courses per year.

Governor Cuomo today announced $59 million in available funds to construct, rehabilitate, and improve the homes of income-eligible families across the State. Funding is available through New York State Homes and Community Renewal’s Affordable Home Ownership Development Program, which provides up to $40,000 per dwelling to eligible municipalities, municipal housing authorities, and other not-for-profit and charitable organizations that develop affordable housing or assist homeowners in funding necessary repairs.

Governor Cuomo today announced the $152 million second phase of the 1-81/Route 17 Prospect Mountain reconstruction project in Binghamton has begun. The project will replace bridges and reconfigure ramps to significantly improve traffic patterns in one of the Southern Tier’s busiest sections. The improvements also enable the State DOT to request federal designation of the four-mile stretch of Route 17 to become I-86.   Work involves reconstructing nearly 9 center lane miles of highway. Interchange 4 will be reconstructed at its juncture with Route 7, by replacing the viaduct bridge over the Norfolk-Southern Railroad tracks and Broad Avenue. 2 new bridges will also be constructed over the Chenango River in the city of Binghamton. This phase is expected to be complete by December 2020.

New York State’s private sector job count increased by 13,300, or 0.2%, to 7,905,500, a new record high in April, according to preliminary figures released today by the New York State Department of Labor. The statewide unemployment rate increased from 4.8% to 4.9% in April 2016, the national unemployment rate was an even 5%.

Governor Cuomo, Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie today announced that the temporary Business Regulation Council is accepting comments and recommendations online through May 26. The Governor said that the state is committed to lowering the cost of doing business in New York State and today’s action will build upon the state’s progress. Oneonta Fire fighters responded to a fire at 8 Forest Avenue in the city’s East End Wednesday. Doria Watson was injured and 1 of her dogs was killed in the fire that was reported at about 1:15 PM Wednesday afternoon. Watson was taken to Fox Hospital for injuries to her ribs. West Oneonta & Worcester fire department also responded, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Governor Cuomo announced that he is advancing legislation to modernize New York’s 80-year-old Alcoholic Beverage Control Law to consolidate licensing and ease regulatory requirements for wineries, breweries, distilleries and cideries.

Cuomo announced the changes at a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Rochester wednesday, he said that in the last few years, the industry has grown to over 1000 new bsuinesses, generating over 12 billion dollars in revenue.

Governor Cuomo today announced more than $453,000 in state grants to enable 39 police departments and sheriffs’ offices to purchase new electronic fingerprinting equipment. With this investment, the state has provided nearly $1.2 million to local law enforcement since last fall, enabling a total of 90 agencies across the state to replace existing devices that are old or obsolete.

The State Senate Task Force on heroin & Opioid Addiction have issued a 4-part plan to combat the crisis in New York State. The plans call for increasing prevention efforts by trying to limit prescriptions for the legal medications from Doctors, opioid education to prescribed patients & Establishing a Narcan kit registry. The plan also calls for increased penalties for existing & new laws dealing with the sale of controlled substances. This year’s state budget commitment of $166 million for heroin and opioid crisis, treatment, outpatient, and residential services, was increased by another $25 million follow the report from the Senate task Force.

U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer introduced a bill to expand Brady background checks. Schumer introduced Brady Bill 2 after more than 2,000 advocates flooded his office Monday morning with phone calls. Senator Schumer’s original Brady Bill has prevented more than 2.6 million gun sales to domestic abusers, violent felons, and people with dangerous mental illnesses; the new bill will expand background checks to all gun sales.

The brand name Time Warner Cable will soon disappear, as Charter Communications announced that they will phase out Time Warner Cable’s name as a result of its $55.1 billion acquisition of the company. Charter Officials announced that the Time Warner aquiisition along with that of Bright House Networks, will both be combined under the “Spectrum” brand name.

The State DOT will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, May 24, regarding plans to rehabilitate a bridge on State Route 28 in the town of Milford. The meeting will be held at Milford Central School, at 7:00 PM. The bridge was built in 1985 and carries State Route 28 over State Route 7 and the Norfolk Southern Railroad Freight Main Line. Construction is anticipated to begin in the 2017 construction season. More information is available at 721-8191.

All Area School Districts had their school budget propositions passed by their voters yesterday. Several area districts that exceeded the tax cap requiring a 60% super majority vote also passed. Capital Reserve Propositions Passed IN Bainbridge Guilford, Gilbertsville Mount Upton, Laurens, Unatego & Unadilla Valley; bus propositions passed in Afton, Bainbridge Guilford, Laurens, Oneonta, Oxford Unadilla Valley & Walton, & library Propositions passed in Milford, Norwich, Walton & Sidney.

Governor Cuomo announced $1 million in funding to expand access to addiction treatment services and family supports in the Southern Tier, and other locations to connect patients in Emergency Departments to appropriate treatment and support programs. In the Southern Tier, $250,000 was awarded to Addiction Center of Broome County in Binghamton, for those in need in Broome and neighboring Counties, starting June 1st.
